  1. Re: Australian A League Round 2 Washup One thing for sure is that the odds here overall on most games are excellent, when compared to the bigger leagues overseas...$2-40 for Home team and $2-80 for away team makes for value for either team...Most games you could back both teams to win to make a profit, as long as there is no draw of course. For example from the weekend. Melb: $2-40 Win - Outlay 1 unit get back 2.4 Units Syd: $2-80 Win - Outlay 1 unit get back 2.8 Units Outlay 2 Units return either 2.4 or 2.8 if either win, the draw loses your 2 units naturally...Profit of .4 or .8 of a unit if either wins...And if you can pick the right games, where there wouldn't be a draw, then you could make consistent profits backing both teams to win on a given game in the A League....I am sure the Queensland/Jets game was $2-30 Jets and $2-70 Roar...So another game where profit on either winning team...Even Adelaide were $2-00 against NZ Knights and not sure what the Knights were...Perth and Mariners were both over $2 for a win too...Another option could be to back the team u like to win, and back other team to return your stake if they should win. Need a way to cancel out the draws tho, but it is certainly food for thought.

  2. This thread is designed to be a discussion point for the A League round completed on the weekend...Where hopefully the combined input can produce some profit in the future Weekend Wrap Results Newcastle Jets 2 lst QUEENSLAND ROAR 3 NEW ZEALAND KNIGHTS 1 bt Adelaide United 0 MELBOURNE VICTORY 3 bt Sydney FC 2 PERTH GLORY 2 bt Central Coast Mariners 0 Game Wraps Queensland recorded the first away victory of the season and stayed top of the table, with Scotsmen Simon Lynch grabbing a late winner. It was rough justice on the Newcastle Jets who dominated large parts of the game and fought back twice. A mix up at the back by the Jets allowed Reinaldo to open the scoring early, but a Roar mix up resulted in Chad Gibson scoring an own goal and it was all tied up. In a bad night for the captain, the Jets captain Paul Okon also put through his own net to give Roar back the lead, but parity was restored with Mark Bridge making it 2-2 at the break. Newcastle dominated the second half searching for a home win, but Lynch was quickest to react after the ball struck Okon on the chest to give Queensland the three points. New Zealand broke a hoodoo in spectacular fashion with Malik Buari’s sensational strike from 20-metres with three minutes of normal time remaining, earning the Knights its first ever win at North Harbour Stadium. The win was richly deserved as they dominated last season’s premiers, who have started the season with two losses on the trot. Last season’s wooden-spooners gave their long-suffering fans finally something to smile about and the hint of good season ahead. Just under 40,000 were on hand at the Telstra Dome to witness one of the most drama-charged nights in Australian domestic football history. The game had it all with most of the key decisions on the night falling the way of home Victory. The first 20 minutes was all action, with two controversial goals going the way of Melbourne, scored by Danny Allsopp and Kevin Muscat from the penalty spot. Not long after Sydney’s captain Mark Rudan was then sent off after first receiving a yellow card and then going on with it. But the drama didn’t stop there as Sydney hit back with Iain Fyfe grabbing his second successive goal minutes later, as 10-men Sydney more than matched the home side. But soon after half time, Melbourne went two goals ahead again, with Muscat’s superb ball not dealt with by Qantas Socceroo Mark Milligan and Allsopp finishing with a coolness by lobbing a stranded Clint Bolton. The drama didn’t stop their with Milligan going down after contact from Fred and then Sydney gave Victory fans a scare when Carney’s shot was deflected into the net, setting up a tense finish. Perth Glory put aside the disappointing end to their Round 1 encounter against Queensland, with an impressive performance in defeating Central Coast Mariners 2-0 at Members Equity Stadium. Kiwi International Leo Bertos and former West Ham and Birmingham City star Stan Lazaridis led the way for Perth, but it was the foresight of Simon Colosimo that led to first goal, his quickly taken free kick catching the Mariners out, while they looked to form a wall. They wrapped up the deserved win when Stuart Young drove a Bertos cross home with ten minutes remaining. Highlights Despite a week of upheaval in the code that had a few of football’s rival sports believing its bubble had burst, just under 40,000 fans at Melbourne’s Telstra Dome turned up and showed that the code is alive and well. We can also not forget New Zealand Knights winning its first ever Hyundai A-League game at North Harbour Stadium thanks to Malik Buari’s late and wonderful strike. Goal of the Week A goal to savour for New Zealand Knights fans. A stunning strike from Malik Buari, who held off Adelaide defender Richard Alagich wide on the left and from just outside the corner of the penalty area, his shot whistled past Adelaide keeper Robert Bajic and nestled into the top corner. The former Fulham midfielder could be the find of the season and in his two games so far has shown he will be a handful for defenders all season long. Player of the Week If there were any doubters, who questioned how effective Qantas Socceroo Stan Lazaridis will be for Perth Glory this season, they were laid to rest at Members Equity Stadium on Sunday. Lazaridis playing in a more advanced role than he was used to in his days with Birmingham City, displayed all his attacking skills and experience in guiding Perth to a deserved win over Central Coast. Based on this display, we can look forward to some vintage Lazaridis in the season ahead and that will be exciting to watch. One to Watch Several this week, including Malik Buari (New Zealand) and Mark Bridge (Newcastle), but Leo Bertos from Perth looks to be an exciting player and one to watch. His two games to date, he has looked lively in attack and very creative and if he retains his consistency, will be a key player for Glory.

  3. Re: Australian A-League Round 2

^^^ I just saw the goals for the first time, how soft were they, especially the second one, very lazy defensive marking, but the main point is that Perth were able to get the result. I will be interested to see next weeks market, not sure how the bookies will see the market, my guess is it will be all very even, maybe slightly more value for the away team given that 6 out of 8 have gone to the home teams so far, with only 1 draw and 1 away win. Interesting to see that Central Coast and Adelaide, two hot contenders for the flag have both failed to score in 180 mins of football. Newcastle have only put one in, with their first being an own goal last week, so maybe the under 2.5 would be a good bet for AU V Newcastle. Most of the interest on here I guess will be around how the bookies place New Zealand and Adelaide, do any of you guys think New Zealand have a chance, last season they ran Melbourne close twice, espcially in the last fixture of the 2005-2006 season, Melbourne have been good but I would hesitiate to say they are in great form and I wonder how much of it is luck. As for Adelaide, two very unimaginative games in a row, it seems that other teams have found them out to an extent and most importantly them are lacking attacking presence. Interested in everyones thoughts, as Beejay said there are some surprises out there and some good odds to be had, see if they can not be found.
I liked your thoughts Miguel and thought about opening a new thread on the washup from Round 2...Maybe every week after each round, we can have a washup and discuss what happened and what might happen in the future.
  4. Re: Australian A-League Round 2 Good stuff Miguel and you always raise some great points. Knights are playing some good football this year, pre season as well, against the better teams...I didn;t follow A League much last year so know little about what transpired then, only the results, and the Knights were ordinary to say the least with 1 win from 21, however the new seasons sees them well placed at the moment. The odds overall on most games are excellent, when compared to the bigger leagues overseas...$2-40 for Home team and $2-80 for away team makes for value for either team...Most games you could back both teams to win to make a profit, as long as there is no draw of course. For example from the weekend. Melb: $2-40 Win - Outlay 1 unit get back 2.4 Units Syd: $2-80 Win - Outlay 1 unit get back 2.8 Units Outlay 2 Units return either 2.4 or 2.8 if either win, the draw loses your 2 units naturally...Profit of .4 or .8 of a unit if either wins...And if you can pick the right games, where there wouldn't be a draw, then you could make consistent profits backing both teams to win on a given game in the A League....I am sure the Queensland/Jets game was $2-30 Jets and $2-70 Roar...So another game where profit on either winning team...Even Adelaide were $2-00 against NZ Knights and not sure what the Knights were...Perth and Mariners were both over $2 for a win too...Another option could be to back the team u like to win, and back other team to return your stake if they should win...Need a way to cancel out the draws tho, it is certainly food for thought There is going to be plenty of good odds coming up in the next few weeks for certain teams and guess the best thing is to take value if you think it is there...Teams with winning form/scoring goals/conceding few goals and at value prices could be good bets

  5. Re: Australian A-League Round 2 The Mariners spoil an otherwise great weekend on the punt...Not sure what happened as I didn't see the game, I seen both goals tho. First goal was a free kick about 25m out and while keeper was asleep in behind his goal line organising his wall Colosimo from the Glory simply kicked the ball into the empty goal, slack defending indeed...The 2nd goal came from a right cross to an unmarked Young who finished nicely to slot home their 2nd goal and put the result beyond doubt. In Ron Smith's first home game in charge of the Glory, Perth supposedly played a fast, precise and attacking brand of football to outclass the Mariners and celebrate its first home game of the season in style. It was Perth's first league win over the Mariners, improving the Glory's head-to-head ledger to one win, one draw and two losses. The Mariners were without midfield linchpin Andre Gumprecht who suffered an adductor strain in the club's 0-1 loss to Sydney last week, while Perth was missing striker Bobby Despotovski (back) and goalkeeper Jason Petkovic (ankle) from its best 11. Perth Glory 2 - 0 Central Coast Mariners Colosimo 52, Young 80 Guess the form around Queensland Roar is holding up pretty well and there may be a few more surprise results throughout the season, the secret is finding them :hope

  6. Re: Australian A-League Round 2

I agree on CCM to win, Perth have only scored 3 goals in their last 7 outings for the new season (pre-season), CCm for me will be one of the best this season. Vukovic is strong in goal for CCM, and I can see perth having real trouble scoring. As I am up a touch this week thanks to Melbourne winning and over 2.5 goals in the same match I am going to have a punt on the ht/ft double here. 8 points to Draw/Central Coast ht/ft double @ $5.75 with Sportingbet
Like ya thinking Miguel and going to have a nibble at the Draw/Central Coast myself and save on the ht/ft. Now we just need CC to get up to make it quite a profitable weekend, Good luck!

Central Coast Mar ...14....6..6...2..19..13...24 I thought Perth Glory were quite good last week against Queensland although they tired badly in the last 20 minutes...Stan Laziridis is going to be a potent force when fully fit and he provides some magnificent service down the left...I am impressed with CC Mariners and they were mighty last week against Sydney and it was only the Sydney keepers top efforts that allowed a 1-0 victory to Sydney. Perth were poor at home last season with 7 losses and the Mariners were a top outfit away and I am quietly confident that the Mariners have the goods to win this game tomorrow...The Roar and Sydney have confirmed the form is good and this could quite easily be a draw, and while I am not that adept at predicting scorelines I will take a stab at a 1-0 or 2-1 win to the Mariners. I prefer to simply back for the win and the Mariners look the winner to me. At Sportingbet.com.au $2-60 for straight out win At Centrebet $2-55 for straight out win Great odds when considering Mariners have 4-1-0 record against Perth and have never lost to them in the League.

  8. Re: Australian A-League Round 2

What a match, and what a crowd 39 730!!! The final last season got 25 573, second round and bigger than the final last season. The match was an interesting one, while Melbourne got the points it has to be noted that Sydney got 2 goals with only 10 men, Melbourne only scored 1 while Sydney had 10 men, so it is a slightly misleading score line. Melbourne played well, but lacked a little structure during the middle part of the match, Muscat and Allesandro were amazing, stand out players. The big news for Melbourne is two fold, Daniel Allsopp, who was as much good as tits on a bull last season finally found the goals, twice, this makes a huge difference to Melbournes chances, with two strikers who are able to score. The second big punting point is Fred, who elbowed a Sydney FC Defender in the head (i think) and is looking at some serious time out of the squad, while Allesandro left early again with a sore hamstring (third match in a row), neither looks likely to play next week against the knights which will slow the Melbourne midfield down a lot. (on a side note, talk back radio was talking up a police investigation into the elbow to the head incident, utter crap but worth keeping an eye on as Melbourne are a team that can get distracted by off-field issues easily) Sydney were very good after the settled and I would say they will bounce back next week very strongly, they seemed to have a lot of run left in them at the end and made a lot of solid attacks for a team with 10 men. God only knows why Carney and Petroski stared on the bench, but I feel that it cost them the game early. Jeremy Brokie looked good up front and should score a lot if he can get good service at Sydney after an average year at the Knights. Melbourne might struggle a bit against a physical New Zealand team next week if Fred and Allesandro miss, even more so given that Claudinho struggled tonight, and seems to be having trouble adjusting to the game out here. I can (and I know this is early) see Sydney beating Perth next week away, they should start with a better structure in the middle and hopefully bring Brockie and Croica into the game a touch more. As for this arvo, it seems that teams are cottoning on to Adelaides power on the quick counter attack, Melbourne ran hard to slow them down and it seems that New Zealand just bullied them for the whole match.
Great write up Miguel and interesting reading your thoughts...I think you havea good eye for what's going on and make some very good points for future reference...cheers
  9. Re: Australian A-League Round 2 Well old Melbourne town is abuzz at the moment after the Victory's great effort tonight...This win and the big crowd at the game has done a lot for the A League and soccer in general here, and can only get better from here. Some of the AFL football games havn't been getting crowds like this, unbelieveable really. I'm going to watch a replay of the game when I get home to see what actually happened, but radio reports suggested Melbourne played really well early to cement the win, but they also said Sydney played a great game in the 2nd half with only 10 men on the field...Considering Melbourne scored 2 goals inside 6 minutes, Sydney's effort is very commendable after the Dwight Yorke transfer this week, and particularly when it looked like how far the Victory early, full credit to Sydney. Talkback Radio advises that the vibe at the ground after the game is sensational and the crowd is on a high at the moment and the Victory will benefit greatly from transferring this game to Telstra Stadium, it multiplied their normal crowd numbers by three.

  10. Re: Australian A-League Round 2

:clap:clap:clap Hopefully this keeps up :) Full Stake and I would hate it to see 2 late equalizer to happen. Btw did Melbourne fully dominate the match now beejay ? I don't have foxtel so I can't see the match :(
Im at work at the moment and luckily it is very quiet so can listen to the radio. I am listening live on http://www.sen.com.au/ just follow link on top right if you want to listen to it live. From what I can gather from broadcast, not looking likely for 2 late goals from Sydney, more likely to be another melbourne goal before that happens. Just reported there was 39,730 people at the game, great crowd considering Victory's home ground only holds about 15,000 or so. Hopefully Melbourne will keep it going cos I have the double at $6-24 into the Mariners tomorrow and will be a sweet collect if they can get up too.
  11. Re: Australian A-League Round 2 HT at Telstra Stadium: Melbourne Victory 2 - 1 Sydney City FC 8' D. Allsopp (MV) GOAL 1-0 11' K. Muscat (pen.) (MV) GOAL 2-0 14' M. Rudan (SC) - RED CARD 18' I. Fyfe (SC) GOAL 2-1 Half time and it appears that Sydney have settled down and calmed the Melbourne 15 minute onslaught. Rudan sent off for Sydney after 14m and it seemed to add some steel to Sydney's game as from all reports they are playing much better now and it is an even contest. The crowd tonight is the highest ever crowd for a domestic soccer game in Australia...Big congrats to the sports mad Melbourne public :cheers

  12. Re: Australian A-League Round 2 Melbourne Victory Vs Sydney FC tonight is now underway and being played in front of a 40,000 plus crowd which is unheard of for a domestic soccer comp in Oz. There was only 7,000 or so at Newcastle last night for the Jets/Roar game, and it shows that Melbourne is indeed the sports loving capitol of Australia. Currently 0-0 after 4min and Melbourne doing all the attacking. I am listening live on http://www.sen.com.au/ Just click on the little radio on the top right to open link into Media Player

  13. Re: Australian A-League Round 2 Thought the odds of $6-24 for the double of Melbourne Victory to win tonight into Central Coast Mariners to win tomorrow was too good to refuse. They are both two of the top 4 sides and both playing well, and the odds, well anything paying over $6 for a couple of the higher rated teams in the league to win is fairly good value to me...Let's see shall we!

  14. Re: Australian A-League Round 2

Full Time New Zealand 1 - 0 Adelaide Just watched the game on tv and what an upset! Cant believe New Zealand won that one, but they thoroughly deserved it. They were sensational, they always had Adelaide on the back foot and i feel the scoreline may of flattered Adelaide a little. Could quite easily have been 2-0 or 3-0. Not sure whats up with Adelaide, they seem very slow when going forward and hardly ever looked dangerous. This was the same case in the match against Melbourne last week. They just seem a completely different team than last season. After only 1 week of A-League action we already may have a goal of the year contender. Buari's goal for New Zealand today was just sublime, he had a shot from outside the yardbox and curved it in over the Adelaide keepers head. So in conclusion, New Zealand may not be as bad as first thought. They have plenty of attacking options, Devine seems to be a very capable forward who could do a bit of damage this season. They are very quick in the midfield, while on the other hand Adelaide seem very slow. They never seem dangerous when they attack and if it wasnt for their strong defence, they could of been burried today
Thanx for the review Ads and explains a bit...maybe need to consider this a new season and not rely too much on last years form so much...The Jets were pretty good last night after there draw with the Knights, so the form has held up...Im gonna have to get real with my times so I don't miss any more live games, that's twice in 2 weeks now...Still can't believe Adelaide lost, but past games have shown the Knights are always competitive against them even though they have only won 2 in 23 games. Must have been an upset cos we all tipped Adelaide :wall
  15. Re: Australian A-League Round 2

ah welll - cest la vie...... Knights get a last minute goal... :\:\:\ Still - great work guys, Keep it up, the discussion is excellent! :ok (*ps - I see Beejayville made the scroller!!! )
Eeeks no Cest la Vie for me cos I had Adelaide going into everything...Struth, maybe they are Adelaide's bogey side cos they have scored 4 points against them now in 4 games...Adelaide havn't scored in 2 games and that's only the Knights 2nd ever win, go figure...Oh well least I got value and lost :) Mmm what's the scroller?
