So if you bet $100 at 1.90, the ticket value is $190, you get back half, $95, so a loss of $5. Bookies can't give you half the odds, because say someone had $100 on one side and someone $100 on the other side, both at 1.90, if they gave half odds they would pay out $145 to both punters, $290 in total but only held $200. The way it is they pay out $95 to both punters, a total of $190, the same payout in total for the bookie if either team had won. With dead heats, if your odds are less than $2 you will show a loss, which gets bigger the shorter the odds. For odds of greater than $2 you will show a profit.
