It has been 45 years since Newcastle won a trophy and this is probably the only cup where they have a realistic chance of doing well as the bigger teams tend to play weakened squads. Pardew was quoted saying "“The Premier League is the be all and end all because of the TV money. You can’t hide from that, and we have not hidden from it - we have actually said it, perhaps to our detriment - but of course we want to win a cup, and of course our fans do.” Newcastle were knocked out by Manchester City last season, no shame in that and they have strengthened the squad over the summer. It also looks like Newcastle will field a strong side tonight as he also said “I will probably take the same 20 players that I took to Aston Villa to Gillingham.”

I'd be wary in saying Newcastle will be going all out for a cup win this season. I was at a club/fans meeting last year where I quote one of Mike Ashley's representatives "We are not a cup team" As with our loss to Man City we will be fielding a mostly second string side, good thing this season is our second string is a whole lot better. So should still have more than enough for Gillingham.
