  1. Re: England > Midweek > Championship > 16,17 August

I really like West Ham to win to nil at Watford @3/1 with Paddy Power. Big Sam's teams are always solid defensively' date=' and their opponents have forged very few good opportunities in their opening 2 matches. Given Watford's rather blunt attack, the Hammers' overall superior quality and the fact that West Ham don't have to worry about the expectation of their home crowd to play attractive football, I think this is a very good bet.[/quote'] While I agree that West Ham are far and away favourites to win this match, I feel I should give you some warning on what you've said, seeing as I have seen us in the flesh and can hopefully advise better than the journalists that make their mind up from the stats. Away to Burnley we had (reportedly) the better of the game and but for a double-deflection would have walked away with a win. Possibly even a win to nil. At home to Derby we had 24 attempts on goal. Frankie Fielding played a mini-blinder. Yes, Derby were poor and at the end of the day here we are on 1 point close to the foot of the table, but to say our attack is blunt is somewhat... foolish IMO.
  2. Re: Barclays Premier League > Ante-Post 2011-12 Season

I've had a quick scan through oddschecker and cant see anyone im afraid. Try phoning them, i'm sure they will give you a price over the phone. (Let me know how you get on as i'm a rather pessimistic gooner at the moment :lol)
Well I've just got off the phone with Will Hill and they said they stopped offering the "bottom after three games" market as it was a limited time offer until a quota was placed on it. I'd guess the others are the same but I'll call Skybet soon and see if they can do something for me, although I still hate using them after they cheated me out of £50 last year :(
  3. Re: England > Weekend > Championship > 13-14 August And to give a view from the other side of that match, south_eastern_ram... We (Watford) are at full strength, missing only Steven McGinn (long term). Our game against Bristol Rovers was postponed and although the lads travelled up there they should be feeling far fresher. Against Burnley we put in a great performance, although the first 30 and last 15 were poor. Our new boys seem to have settled in well and unfortunately for you guys I can't see you threatening too much. I would go for the home win, although be wary as it's "Kids for a Quid" day - a fixture where we often disappoint. I am finding it hard not to follow my heart on 2.15 offered by Will Hill. Watford to beat Derby @ 2.15

  4. Re: England: Championship Aug 5-7 Also I know my above phrase "temporarily depleted" regarding Burnley is a bit ambiguous, so my main concerns for them are that they've lost Tyrone Mears, Graham Alexander and Chris Eagles (and Iwelumo as above) and still haven't really replaced them. Two loan signings in and what, 9 out? Can't help but take the value of more than quadrupling your money on that.

  5. Re: England: Championship Aug 5-7

[font=Comic Sans MS]Hi' date= first time poster but have been a regular reader of the site. Dont usually have many bets in the 1st week or so as results can be very random but first stand out selection for me is READING 1.80 (stan James) Reasoning for this is due to how well Reading finished the season, the only 1st team member to leave is Matt Mills (to Leisecter who I will be following closley this season) but have replaced him with Khumalo from Tottenham on loan. Reading will be wanting a very strong start to the season because due to their poor start last season they missed out on an automatic promotion spot. Reading have only dropped 4 points to Milwall in their last 10 games but more impressivly have won their last 5 home games, scoring 12 and conceding 2. Hope this post is ok :)
Didn't they also lose ingimarsson and kryshinasvili (sp)? Thats their 3 best centre halves. Ian Harte looked like he was struggling for the tail end of last season and he's getting on, I fear he's not the same player as this time 12 months ago. Anyway, I'm not betting too much this season but hopefully I can give some advice. Watford to beat burnley @4.33 Maybe its heart ruling head, maybe its blind faith. Always the underdog, we at watford surprise a fair amount of people. Sure we're away and we are yet to put in anything resembling a good performance in preseason, but that doesn't matter. We had the same sort of summer last year and beat norwich 3-2 on the Friday (a scoreline which quite frankly flattered them). We've had two huge departures in Graham and Cowie and two more in Buckley and Mackay. What people haven't realised is that we've also addressed all of the issues that have haunted us over the last 5 years. We now have a proper left back, a proper left winger, a proven target man and most surprisingly, substitutes older than 18. Oh, and Chris Iwelumo will be dying to score against the clarets at turf moor. Not to mention burnleys temporarily depleted squad and the lingering expectation from not bouncing straight back up last year. Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
  6. Apologies if this is in the wrong section... We run a FF league in the office and of the two years I've played I've ended up scooping 1st and 2nd places. Obviously these are my circumstances, and playing against mostly Arsenal fans (they had Chamakh like all season long) so to win that prize was fairly easy. I'm wondering how the pay-to-enter leagues fare. I assume the ones run by the Sun etc are again full of fairly unknowledgable big four fans, but paying a company to take part always seemed like a bit of a good way to ruin a hobby - office banter. What are peoples opinions/success stories/anecdotes with the FF stuff? I'm going to run a Last Man Standing league this year with the work lot, so I guess if anyone does this then I'd be interested to hear!

  7. Re: Npower Championship > Ante-Post 2011-12 Season

"Their forward line is likely to consist of past-it players with the physiques of pregnant women - Scotland, Ellington and Chopra are going to manage 7 games between them before rupturing knee ligaments in a pasty eating contest. Now that Wickham has been sold they're going to have very little movement and more importantly desire in the final third. “ Literally the funniest thing I've heard in a long time. Chopra is generally fit. He was injured last season, so what. You name me a player who hasn't had injury trouble for 1 season. He scores goals, has good movement and is an absolute bargain for £1.5 mill. If you think otherwise, then thats up to you Scotland I agree with the movement - however, he played in literally every game last season so your 7 game thing is wide of the mark. He scored 10 goals in a horrendous team hoofing the ball under Keane. He loves the ball on the deck. This time he has a pre season ( didn't have 1 at Wigan ) and apparently looks up for it. If he stays he'll do better. Ellington I'm not at all sure on, however he's a freeby. So if he scores 5 or more, for my money that I'd take. Jewell got the best out of him before, also did quite well in Greece. Not hugely for this signing Priskin, who you failed to mention is quick and when on his game ( sadly less often than it should be ) is a good player. Very good link up play, sadly a shocking finisher Also, add to this we had such an uncreative midfield last season. We actually have a manager who likes to pass the ball around now, so I have a lot more faith in strikers getting chances. Messi would have struggled under Keane's HOOOOOF style approach. So yeah, just thought I'd comment on your comments. I think we're looking the best we have since Royle - but what happens, who knows its a bit of a lottery Which side do you support and how will your lot do ?
I'm a Watford fan. I've had the displeasure of watching Ellington bankrupt our club while doing very little in return. As for Priskin, hasn't he spent as much time on loan AWAY from Town? You're right though, I did forget about him! Obviously I can't speak for how well he performed for you guys but for us he was lazy - skilful, yes - and while he does prefer the ball to his feet, can you seriously say he'll ever hit 15 goals a season? I do think that Chopra is a good signing, and by the sounds of things he's having a good preseason, but again it's a guy who has never really got out of second gear on the scoring front (except the good season with arguably the second best team in the division in 09/10). I do like Ipswich as a club, but unfortunately I can't see them getting too far up the table - although I'll be happy to be proved wrong! You mentioned the poor midfield of last year - has it improved? (Genuine question here!)
  8. Re: Npower Championship > Ante-Post 2011-12 Season As promised, I will now give you an insight into my screaming value bet on the top goalscorer odds, and it is at long, long odds. Unfortunately a combination of fat fingers, and crossing a busy junction while placing the bet on my phone meant that I put a little more cash on than I wanted but I still stand by this guy. Marvin Sordell: 66/1 E/W @ Skybet This guy tends to divide opinion amongst Watford fans, some people think he's lazy and would like to see him running himself into the ground, others appreciate that he's just not that type of player but is very good at conserving his energies for the right moment. There is one thing we all agree on and that is that he has bags of talent and pace. He's 20 years old and in his first season (I'm discounting the four or so sub appearances from the year before) he scored 12 goals in 25 starts. Reasons for the lack of appearances below*. The real reason that I like him for top scorer (or at least E/W) is that Danny Graham has moved on to the Premier League and right now we have just two recognised strikers, one of which was played at right wing, so expect him to be the focus of our attacking force and get a lot of games. We've signed two wingers and are still looking to strengthen at the back (I must admit it looks unlikely that we'll do so) so our tactics will definitely be along the lines of "we'll score one more than you", Marvin will be the spearhead. I think the only thing that might hinder Marvin this year will be the departure of Danny Graham: not for his skill or assists, but his work rate which created a lot of space. Still, if you've watched Troy Deeney (our other striker) I think he'll fill that role. It may be a case of heart ruling head, but I genuinely believe Sordell can do this, and I'm not taking him just because the odds are high. * He was given, IMO, unfair treatment from Malky Mackay who dropped him despite his good form for an alleged bust up between the two. The same happened to Will Buckley who has since left for Brighton (MM signed off the deal and then quit Watford) and it is believed Sordell is now very happy that he's gone. Both players were left out for long periods of last season to the dismay of a lot of fans.

  9. Re: Npower Championship > Ante-Post 2011-12 Season Hi all, first post here and I've had the pleasure of following my team up and down the championship for quite some time now, so hopefully I can contribute. I don't want to talk about odds just yet but merely on the sports side of things. It's clear to see why Leicester are the favourites in so many people's eyes, but you just get the feeling that they're a bit of a trainwreck waiting to happen. It'll be the same as Middlesbrough last year, too much hype coupled with no delivery at the start will crush them soon enough. I actually like the look of the Nottingham Forest side, likely to be rejuvenated under Schteve McClaren who has shown in the past he's had success at clubs who just needed that little kick. His influence is underestimated by a lot of people looking at his England (has that ever ended well for ANYONE?) and Wolfsburg (team on the down) records when really they seem like bad career decisions rather than being an inept manager. I'd also steer clear of Ipswich, as has been suggested in previous posts. Their forward line is likely to consist of past-it players with the physiques of pregnant women - Scotland, Ellington and Chopra are going to manage 7 games between them before rupturing knee ligaments in a pasty eating contest. Now that Wickham has been sold they're going to have very little movement and more importantly desire in the final third. I don't know if you can bet on these things yet but you might want to have a look at Brighton finishing bottom six. Flashing the cash is fine and all, but they've hardly brought in anyone with a great record in this division. Same as my opinion on Leicester, if they don't make a good start then they might find themselves playing catch up a little more than they'd like to - they might have forgotten how. Finally my big hunch is on Southampton. A fantastic academy, great infrastructure and a huge dose of realism from the past decade. I hope they don't fail at the final hurdle but they've got a great manager in Adkins and are on the up. Maybe not wise to put them on first place but promotion is definitely a possibility. I have a good idea on top goalscorers, although I can't find anywhere to lay down any money yet - I only use a few select bookies. If anyone can suggest somewhere that'd be grand!
