  1. Re: Npower Championship > Ante-Post 2011-12 Season

Pompey are in deep trouble: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2002635/Tal-Ben-Haim-sue-Portsmouth-1-4m-unpaid-wages.html If Ben-Haim wins then Portsmouth won't be able to sign players and they have just 8 players left.Kanu wants to end his career as I have read and I don't think that the Israelian wants to stay. Does anyone know something else?
That's not great news for them, but they've become used to these problems and always managed to get round them one way or another. I don't know too much about the new owner or the money he will put in. But even if he's as bad as the last lot they still managed to put together a team that got them to midtable security. As an aside, the article calls this the worst time in their history. surely not! One relegation and a midtable finish, albeit with financial worries, as the cost for probably their best ever period!
  2. Re: U21 European Championship 2011 England do have some good individuals but so do Spain. More important for me Spain have a more settled team and they know how they play the game. England never seem to have a definite line up or pattern of play, especially under Stuart Pearce who is a poor coach in my view. Of course it's the first game of a tournament, not the most important, teams can need time to settle in and if there's going to be surprises this may be the time for them. Remember Switzerland last year? That's why I won't be betting too heavily on Spain in this one. For me the best bet is on Bojan to score. Spain will dominate posession, not just because they're Spain, most teams do against England :\ - so they should create chances. Bojan may not have exploded as some would have hoped a couple of years ago, in fact he looks like leaving Barcelona, he is still a high quality player in my opinion. He had a decent end to the season, always seeming to be among the goals when brought on or when Barca fielded weakened teams in La Liga. Although the centre of defence is strong for England with the future of Manchester United Smalling and Jones, they have been weakened at fullback and Fielding seems to be the latest in a string of fairly average keepers (before and after Hart). Bojan first goalscorer 9/2 Bojan last goalscorer 9/2 Bojan anytime 11/8

  3. Re: Carling Nations Cup Definitely think Ireland should win it, Scotland were not that impressive in beating Wales and on paper Republic have the strongest team. Provisional Republic of Ireland team: Given, McShane, O'Dea, Kelly, Ward, Lawrence, Andrews, Fahey, Hunt, Keane, Cox. Scotland: McGregor, Whittaker, Hanley, Berra, Bardsley, Naismith, Brown, Adam, Robson, Forrest, Miller (capt). This tournament is not greatly meaningful but they're here, they're at home, they may as well try to win it.

  4. Re: Carling Nations Cup Anyone else manage to get on when Bet365 posted the wrong odds somehow? Republic of Ireland were 7/1! Will they pay out? I assume they might have to? (I'd have posted it but they changed it soon after I got on, don't know how long the odds were up for)

  5. Re: EURO 2012 Qualifiers - Saturday 26 March Don't forget England's last qualification competitive game was a correct 0-0 at home against Montenegro. Wales are not a great side but they do have some good players and this is a derby game with a big home crowd. Maybe I'm too depressed as an England supporter but I can't have enough faith in them for the odds available. I think it may be worth betting on a Wales goal. England defence looks slow, Wales ahve pace with Bellamy and Bale, who will be up against Glen Johnson. Both teams to score 11/10 @Bet365

  6. Re: Euro 2012 > 12th October

England v Montenegro Montenegro +1.5 @ 2.01 - Pinnacle To be perfectly honest, I find England are almost always under-priced by the bookies. Call it patriotism, respect for a historically big football nation, whatever - it almost always holds true. As it does in this game, yet again. I'd lay them at the current price given on betfair (1.27), but I believe there's more value in their opposition on the handicap. England are, after all, pretty solid at Wembley, but do they have what it takes to beat this Montenegro team, a team that has yet to concede so far in qualifying, by two goals? Probably not, I say. They've been in good form lately, which is a cause for optimism, but one mustn't underrate this Montenegrin side. England will be without 'true captain' John Terry, Frank Lampard and the man in international form for England - Defoe. Walcott is out as is Lennon, so the midfield is starting to lack creativity compared to what they've had previously. Key players such as Gerrard and Rooney will be frustrated due to their teams' performances in the Premier League lately, and to be perfectly honest I wouldn't be surprised if we get a Deja Vu feeling from what we saw in the World Cup. I think their squad, in their lack of creativity, will have a tough time breaking down a stubborn Montenegrin defense, who will definitely be playing for a draw here. Should be an interesting game.
England have a couple of players out injured but I don't think this weakens them too much in terms of creativity - it's widely reported that Young and Johnson will start in the wide positions, in my view these two are much more creative and able to unlock dfences than the simple speed merchants like Walcott and Lennon. The only problem is that with Crouch coming in for Bent, and where Defoe may have been, they will lack penetration in behind the defence, so they will rely heavilty on the wide men - luckily these two love to run at players and are two of the three form English players of the season so far, the other being Wilshere on the bench if they need a goal (along with Joe Cole). Montenegro +1.5 may be a decent bet, but I'm not so convinced by the lack of goals. I can see both teams scoring here.
  7. Re: International Friendlies > 19th May - 26th May

Might be a bit crazy' date=' but I fancy both teams to score in this one... I can't trust France to keep a clean sheet with their recent performances, but they should win this one tonight. Sorry about Portugal mate, I know quite a few people that got done on that one. I know one guy that put his student loan on it. Not a happy bunny.[/quote'] :eek Luckily I didn't have anything that big riding on it. Anyway good call on both teams to score!
  8. Re: UEFA Europa League 22nd April

I very much like the look of Fulham to get something from Hamburg tomorrow night and 2.30 for Fulham +0.5 in Asia looks really really tempting. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the game were to finish 0-0 considering Hodgson will probably set up 4-5-1 with Zamora upfront on his own and very much like their games against Shakthar and Wolfsburg, Fulham will simply look to frustrate Hamburg and close Hamburg down at every opportunity. Wolfsburg are much higher than Hamburg in the Bundesliga and they never looked like scoring at home against Fulham in the last round. If Hodgson sets up a similar approach here whilst looking to nick one on the counter, you have to say the Cottagers offer terrific value and even Under 2.5 at around 10/11 looks value imo.
Not true, Hamburg are above Wolfsburg though both have had fairly disapointing domestic campaigns. I rate Hamburg higher, that is simply instinct in the main though. Also both Shaktar and Wolfsburg were second legs, I feel this makes a difference, going there with something to play with. Not a huge factor but another small thing against Fulham. I may be more conservative than you and go with Fulham+1.5 Under 2.5 I'd agree with. I'd also look at that in the other game, with the top strikers for both sides in Aguero and Torres missing, though Atletico at least have Forlan. He has some form of scoring against Liverpool of course, but he hasn't scored many in this competition. Never-the-less 4/1 first or last goalscorer may be tempting in what should be an even and low scoring game.
  9. Re: Champions League 9th of March Arsenal vs Porto over 2.5 goals 4/5 on bet365, seems like great odds to me, two open attacking sides, not great defences or keepers, Arsenal have to score but will never sit on a 1-0 should they get that. :hope Fabregas is a miss but they've still got all kinds of threats, and Diaby, a much underrated player in my view, looks like stepping straight in. How many chances did they make against Burnley without Cesc? I know it's Burnley... but are Porto even that much better defensively?? They've been without Fabregas a fair bit this season and not been too troubled.

  10. Re: UEFA Europa League » Dec 16 The key players for Fulham are Schwazer, Hangeland, Murphy, Dempsey, Zamora and Johnson. Apart from that, they have some decent players but they are changeable, it's a small squad but Hodgson can make a few changes and not lose too much quality if he keeps those players in. I think all but Johnson will likely start tonight?

  11. Re: UEFA Europa League » Dec 16 From wikipedia:

    • Hertha BSC will qualify if:
      • they do not lose to Sporting CP OR
      • Heerenveen do not defeat Ventspils

[*]Heerenveen will qualify if they defeat Ventspils AND Sporting CP defeat Hertha BSC

    • Basel will qualify if:
      • they do not lose to Fulham

    • Panathinaikos will qualify if they win or draw or lose by 0:1 score against Dinamo Bucureşti
    • Dinamo Bucureşti will qualify if they defeat Panathinaikos by any score other than 1-0
    • Club Brugge will qualify if they do not lose to Toulouse

    • Copenhagen will qualify if they do not lose to Sparta Prague

So most of the qualification will be decided by 'playoffs', the rest are dead rubbers as far as I'm concerned - I'm sceptical of how much of a motivation it is to finish top even in the CL, this much moreso. So I suppose team news will be the important thing in those games. Also just from scanning the list a lot of the top teams are away, which makes it that little bit more difficult. I am wary of Shaktar, Gala, Roma - even playing the weakest teams in the respective groups.
