  1. Greece-Kazakhstan harist_2004_7_4_23_32_4_b.jpg Greece(-2.5)-Kazakhstan(+2.5): 2 @ 1.92 @ Expekt (6/10) You might wonder why the hell I even bother to write about such a match... Well, first of all I was bored without some action in the weekend, since the national league was postponed due to the World Cup Qualifiers. Strange isn’t it? While most of the European leagues go ahead as planned, the Greek championship takes a rest ahead of the “big match” against Kazakhstan. That is another subject of course, which is not at the moment to discuss. The second reason is that I have found a bet, which I believe is worth to take, as the odds are pretty tempting. I do not know much about Kazakhstan, so I will mainly approach the match under the Greek perspective. ellas_2.jpg After the triumph in the EURO 2004, Greece has followed 3 matches without a win at the World Cup Qualifiers. They suffered an embarrassing defeat in Albania (1-2) and they were held to a 0-0 draw against Turkey at home. The clash against Ukraine was a live-or-die match and hopefully they managed to perform well (1-1) and keep the hopes alive. It is needless to say that no one can even dare to think of dropping points tonight, since Greece will be doomed in that case. “If we lose to Kazakhstan in front of 33.000 fans in Athens, we have no business going to Germany for the World Cup”, said coach Otto Rehhagel. Striker Papadopoulos (Panathinaikos) is sidelined due to an injury, while defender Dellas (Roma) and midfielder Giannakopoulos (Bolton) are doubtful but expected to play. Rehhagel will field a 4-4-2 formation with Charisteas and Vryzas in the front line, a team that we have been used to see in Portugal as well. 83672A.jpg Tonight’s match will be a milestone for Captain Zagorakis, who will play his 100th match with the national team of Greece. Now concerning the bet that I have chosen… First of all "Greece" and "High-Scoring matches" do not go together. As I have said in the past, the Under 2.5 goals is always the best bet to take in their matches. Of course, now the situation is different, coz this is the easiest home match of Greece against an inferior opponent, like Kazakhstan. By taking a look at Kazakhstan’s previous matches, we can see that: *They lost to Ukraine 1-2 at home. With the visitors taking a lucky win in the last minutes of the match! *They suffered a heavy defeat 0-4 in Turkey. Yet, 2 of the 4 goals were conceded in injury time! *They lost to Albania 0-1 at home. What I am trying to point out is that I cannot see Greece thrashing their opponents and getting an impressive result, like 4-0 or smth... Expekt has been more than generous to offer Kazakhstan (+2.5) at odds over 1.90 and I believe that they should think twice before offering similar advantages to opponents of Greece in the future.

  2. Ukraine-Greece e-go_o_xarrrr7777.jpg Greece has suffered a blow due to the injury of striker Charisteas, who is most likely going to be sidelined for this crucial match. Charisteas is the most important player in the front line and now Vryzas is alone. Given the fact that Papadopoulos (striker of Panathinaikos) was injured in the last round, Rehaggel has no alternatives for this problem. Instead he will probably use a midfielder (Giannakopoulos?) behind Vryzas. With only one point after 2 matches, Greece is desperate to get a positive result in Kyiv, in order to stay alive. The defeat at Albania and the draw against Turkey at home have pushed them back in the table. There is however a good point in the whole story. There is less pressure by the media and the public in general, a situation similar to the one in the EURO 2004 Qualifiers. Probable line-up Greece: Nikopolidis (Olympiakos) - Kapsis (Bordeaux), Katsouranis (AEK), Dellas (Roma), Seitaridis (Porto) - Zagorakis (Bologna), Fyssas (Benfica), Basinas (Panathinaikos), Karagounis (Inter), Giannakopoulos (Bolton) - Vryzas (Celta). On the other hand, Schevchenko is in great spirits, appearing to be in a great form with his club, AC Milan. His performance may be a crucial factor on Saturday. Speaking to the Greek television on Friday night, Oleg Protasov, a respectful and very popular person in Greece, who has played in the national league, mentioned: «I believe that the draw is the most probable outcome. Both teams will play carefully in the defense and if the strikers of either side are in a good day, that may decide the match.» The coach of Ukraine, Oleg Blokhin, is also familiar with the Greek football, having worked as a coach here a few years ago. He is not going to underestimate Greece, knowing the psychology of his opponents, suggesting that the aftermath of the Euro triumph has disoriented them. H2H Stats 2004: Greece-Ukraine: 1-0 2002: Ukraine-Greece: 2-0 With a win, Ukraine will gain a huge advantage. But the draw will not disappoint anyone. I expect a tight match, decided at one goal (if any). So, I will once again back the Under 2.5 option, as I have done in most of Greece’s matches. 8)

  3. APOLLON-ARIS This is the semi-final of the Greek Cup. The match is played in Lamia (neutral ground). A few hours ago, Apollon suffered a huge blow, when one of his best players, American D.Jones (2.03m Forward), was found positive in a drug test. He had been using cannabis, therefore he is suspended for the match. I consider Aris to be a better team and I think that this is a big mistake by Ladbrokes. They offer the Away Win with a -6pts Handicap @ 1.90, where Expekt has set the Handicap at 11.5 pts and Betandwin does not offer it at all. :eek

  4. Greece-Bulgaria 3dflagsdotcom_greec_2fawm.gif3dflagsdotcom_bulga_2fawm.gif Greece remains undefeated in the last 13 matches, after the win over Armenia on October 16th 2002! King Otto, as coach Rehagel is called, has managed to build a team that is not afraid of any opponent. Despite the fact that everybody considered Spain and Ukraine to qualify from their Group to EURO 2004 in Portugal, Greece created the major upset and took the 1st place. What was the secret of Rehagel? Strong defense and patience in seeking the winning goal. Take a look at the results and you will see many scores like 1-0, 0-0, 2-0. For today’s match, Greece will miss some regular players: Nikopolidis (gk), Karagounis (mid) and Giannakopoulos (mid). Striker Papadopoulos (Panathinaikos) is the new person in the starting line-up and he appears to be in great form. Bulgaria has also qualified for EURO 2004. They will also miss a couple of regular players and coach Markov will be able to test many different plans. The match will be played in Leoforos (home ground of Panathinaikos). However it is doubtful whether it will be full of spectators tonight. I would say that 1(X) is the most probable result, yet taking into consideration the previous results and the fact that this is a friendly match, I will take the UNDER 2.5 goals.

  5. I smell a French conspiracy here... ;) Tunisia has secured qualification and they need just one point to secure the 1st position of their Group as well. French coach, Lemer, will probably make some changes in the starting line-up, testing some players that have not played much. Guinea needs one point in order to qualify, if Rwanda wins the other match. Guess what? They also have a French coach, who by the way praised Lemer for his squad. Overall, the draw suits them both... ...make that three, coz I picked the draw! :ok

  6. Re: Euro 2004 final qualifying round 11/10 GREECE-N.IRELAND The final countdown for Greece, who is 90 minutes away from Portugal! Against all odds, Greece is standing proudly on top of their Group, leaving behind the grand favorite Spain. All we need is to win our last match against Northern Ireland at home, in order to get qualification. «You have defeated them in Belfast, now you have to defeat them again in Athens. You have the chance to write history», said coach Otto Rehagel to his players. The only missing player is defender Kirgiakos (injured). The most probable line-up is: Nikopolidis – Dellas, Kapsis, Antzas, Fyssas, Seitaridis – Basinas, Giannakopoulos, Tsiartas – Charisteas, Vryzas. On Saturday, 15.000 flags and 10.000 scarves will be offered as a gift to the spectators and for the first time the new anthem for the Greek National Football Team by Mikis Theodorakis will be heard. Needless to say that there is not a ticket left and everything is ready for the big fiesta. 1.500.000 Euros await the Greek players. This is the bonus for the Qualification to the EURO 2004 in Portugal. N.Ireland has forgotten when it was the last time that they scored a goal. Check out their latest matches: 17/04/2002 N.Ireland-Spain: 0-5 (Friendly) 21/08/2002 N.Ireland-Cyprus: 0-0 (Friendly) 12/10/2002 Spain-N.Ireland: 3-0 (Euro Qualifiers) 16/10/2002 N.Ireland-Ukraine: 0-0 (Euro Qualifiers) 12/02/2003 N.Ireland-Finland: 0-1 (Friendly) 29/03/2003 Armania-N.Ireland: 1-0 (Euro Qualifiers) 02/04/2003 N.Ireland-Greece: 0-2 (Euro Qualifiers) 03/06/2003 Italy-N.Ireland: 0-2 (Friendly) 11/06/2003 N.Ireland-Spain: 0-0 (Euro Qualifiers) 06/09/2003 Ukraine-N.Ireland: 0-0 (Euro Qualifiers) 10/09/2003 N.Ireland-Armenia: 0-1 (Euro Qualifiers) Coach McIlroy has many players missing: midfielders Daugherty (injured), Mulryne (injured) Johnson (suspended) and striker McVeigh (injured). However the Captain of the team, Keith Gillesby, is fit and he will play. GO HELLAS! 3dflagsdotcom_greec_2fawm.gif

  7. Armenia-Greece This is the latest interview of Greece´s coach, Otto Rehagel, a few hours before the match: «My career as a coach goes back a long time and I have lived great moments. But if I manage to lead Greece to EURO2004 in Portugal, it would be one of my greatest achievements and I would be extremely happy!» As every German, Otto Rehagel does not try to find excuses. Yerevan has an altitude of 1.800 metres and the humidity makes it hard even to breathe. «These are the conditions, so we have to get used to them. The altitude should not concern anyone. This is the greatest chance that Greek Football has in years and we have to grab this opportunity. Every player knows that this is the Key-Match and we have to take the win, no matter what.» Rehagel acknowledges the fact that Greece is the favorite, but he is not concerned at all. «I don´t care if everyone says that we are the favorite, or if the Bookies offer very low odds on the Away Win! Everything is going to be decided on the field. I do not care what others say, only for what my players will do once they get on the stadium.» And who those players would be? As always, Rehagel (a very superstitious man) did not announce the starting line-up. He just said that Nikopolidis (Goalkeeper) and Dellas (defender) will start for sure! Otto Rehagel has a headache over the condition of Stelios Giannakopoulos (midfielder). He seemed ok in the latest training and he will decide whether to use him, a few hours before the match. In case that he will not play, Rehagel will use Georgiadis (Olympiakos) in his place. Armenia is a different team at home. The last time that they lost was back in 2001 (1-4 from Norway). However since then, they have only played two matches in Yerevan: 07-09-2002: Armenia-Ukraine: 2-2 29-03-2003: Armenia-N.Ireland: 1-0 The coach of Armenia is Romanian Mihai Stoikita, who took over last January, succeeding Argentinian Oscar Lopez (He was sucked after asking for a raise). In the past 13 months, Armenia has changed 4 coaches! Probable line-ups: Armenia: Berezofski, Dohogian, Morozov, Bilimbio, Sarkisian, Hatsatrian, Vardanian, Petrosian, Movsesian, Arm. Karamian, Art. Karamian. Greece: Nikopolidis, Seitaridis, Dellas, Dambizas, Kapsis, Fyssas, Karagounis, Zagorakis, Georgiadis (or Giannakopoulos), Haristeas, Nikolaidis.

  8. Re: Iceland Actually, Greece has screwed up in some big occasions. However they managed to win the crucial game against Ukraine at home. They know that if they beat Armenia, then the Qualification ticket would be inside their pocket, since the last match is at home against a weak opponent. The disadvantage they have is the high-altitude of Yerevan (1.800 m.) and the humidity (70%). Conditions are difficult there. If they get used to it, they will get the win!

  9. Armenia-Greece 3dflagsdotcom_armen_2fawm.gif3dflagsdotcom_greec_2fawm.gif ARMENIA-GREECE It is «Now or Never» situation for Greece. For the first time after 23 years, Greece has a golden a chance to earn a ticket to the EURO Finals and every player has to rise up to the occasion. After the surprise win in Spain and the last one against Ukraine at home, Greece is proudly on top of the table and is the favorite to qualify from this Group, leaving Spain in the second place. Despite the loss of Tsartas (midfielder) and the probable one of Antzas (defender), coach Otto Rehagel and his players are determined to give 100% to take all the points in Yerevan, ahead of the last match against weak Northern Ireland at home. Midfielder Giannakopoulos suffers from an injury, but he will probably play. «Only the unknown scares Greece», mention the Armenian newspapers, which point out that Greece has not conceded a goal in the last 4 matches. For the first time, the coach of Armenia called 30 year-old defender Marozov, who plays for Rostov in Russia. The goalkeeper will be Roman Berezofski (Dinamo Moscow). Argentinian-born, Hose Bilimbio will be the leader in the defensive line. Karamian brothers, used to play in Panachaiki in Greece, a weak team that now plays in the lower divisions. Former coach of Panathinaikos, Sergio Markarian, who is of Armenian origin, warned the Greek players to be extremely careful and not underestimate Armenia. «You are going to have a hard task, but if you are focused on the match», he said, «you are going to prevail». The advantage that Armenian team has is the high-altitude of Yerevan (1.800 m.) and the humidity (which reaches 70%). That makes it difficult for any team to survive all 90 minutes of the game. After 6 matches, Greece is in the 1st place of the Group, with 12 points, Spain follows with 11 points, Ukraine has 9 points, Armenia has 4 points and Northern Ireland has 2 points. I am confident that Greek players will give their best, in order to take the crucial win and I hope that they will get it. I expect a tough game, with few goals. Notice that after 6 matches, Greece has scored 6 goals and has conceded only 4!

  10. Re: New Zealand France-Colombia: UNDER 2.5 goals French Captain, Dessaily, claims that his team has come over the early disqualification in the last World Cup and that they are ready to win the Confederations Cup at home. France is the Cup holder, after winning the title in Japan 2 years ago. However due to injuries or commitments of some players with their clubs, France will miss Zidane, Vieira, Makelele and Trezeguet! Coach Santini pointed out that he will concentrate more on the result rather than playing attractive football! I will bet on UNDER in France´s first match in the tournament.
