Rio's Racing Diary

Re: Rio's Racing diary 2010 Not a good day yesterday. The ground has gone & can only get worse with more rain expected today. At this point I am looking at sitting the last two days out, unless something takes my eye as I'm watching. Bannock was well backed but didn't get involved. Manighar ran ok in the Gold Cup. Couldn't believe the price Chain Lightning went off, 6/1!!! Tazahum didn't stay & Purification was tailed off. At Beverley in the evening Sunrise Safari ran a cracker to come second. Now here's a good one, I had another bet & went to get my return only to be told I'd have to wait as they didn't have enough cash to pay me out :cigar Now that's always been one of those moments I've dreamed about "Ok, no problem, you get the money & I'll go find a wheelbarrow to take my winnings to the car" The bet was £10 to place on the Tote, it paid £7.30 & the chap on the Tote in the Owners & Trainers didn't have £73 to pay me out :eek I do hope Fred had a look at the books before he bought them out. Escape Artist never got in it & Ay Tay Tate was in front & going well 2f out but Lunar Promise was going better & won easy really. With the top up bets the stake was 165pts & nothing back, I've not included the Tote bet. Racing Club bets W/R 45/192 Stakes 5143 Returns 5723.60 P/L +580.60pts Sunrise in the parade ring. dscf1323z.jpg Uploaded with ImageShack.us A close up in the second spot after. dscf1325.jpg Uploaded with ImageShack.us The good news was that I got back to the car after the Ay Tay Tate race & was still in the car park when the heavens opened. A few seconds later & I would have been soaked & that would have been a nice soggy drive home. Finally the 2yo that couldn't be called Holiday Read has a name at last. He is now called Holiday Reading :eyes Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing diary 2010 Almost a month since my last post, I've been working, although perhaps not for much longer as things are looking decidedly dodgy & I've also been under the weather. Back in action today though with another trip to Beverley where Saharia runs in the 4.00. He ran there 10 days ago & was looking like he'd place when he got blocked on the rail & had to be snatched up. He needs it to fall into his lap but he will win at some point & is running at his lowest level ever here. Had a small bet already & will be having the same on track. Shadowtime in the 3.00 is a course specialist & won here LTO & this race last year off 5lb lower. Those with turf form don't look much to me. I Confess is running well but on the aw & the danger could be Old English from Johnston who's got only aw form & is coming back from been gelded. Again I've had a bet & will be topping up, price allowing of course. Bets. Shadowtime 30pts @ 9/4 Bet365 BOG. Saharia 15pts @ 8/1 Hills BOG. More possible action later in the week with Sunrise Safari in at Hamilton & Leicester on Thursday & Newmarket Friday. Arabian Spirit is in at Newmarket on Saturday. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing diary 2010 Not a great day yesterday. Shadowtime never looked like getting involved. Ollie won the race with Toto Skyllachy & had the runner up in the last from three runners, the other being Saharia. Everything looked to be going to plan has he was held up & came there nicely 2f out & then.... nothing. Lee Topliss said he thought he was going to win, so did Ollie who thought it looked like he didn't stay. The winner was the one who blocked us off last week so I was disappointed we didn't beat him. The Timeform view is they didn't go fast enough & were not coming back to him. On refection he probably just had an off day. Shadowtime was never longer than 15/8 so no top up, I did get on Saharia again at 11's so 60pts down. Racing Club bets W/R 45/194 Stakes 5203 Returns 5723.60 P/L +520.60pts Sunrise Safari goes to Hamilton tomorrow, it's a long haul & I've been there so I'm giving that a miss but I'll have a look at the race tonight. Arabian Spirit is in at Newmarket Saturday :hope he runs & I get a badge. Holiday Reading may go to Sndown next week & I would be looking to make that trip. The other 2yo by Red Clubs out of Stop Out is called Ruby Night & should be out in a few weeks. Saharia in the pre parade & parade rings. Re: Rio's Racing diary 2010 Bit of a head scratcher the Hamilton race tomorrow, I'm not sure that there'll be the strong pace on that Sunrise needs. At the moment with just three bookies & the exchanges pricing he's 5/1 with the place terms at a fifth I'm inclined to leave along at the moment especially as with a dead eight runners if one drops out then it would be the first two for a place. I'll look again in the morning. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing diary 2010 I've backed Sunrise Safari, i know he's not the easiest to predict but with Lee Topliss taking off 5lbs he looks very well handicapped. Pace was my main worry as i remember you mentioning it in the past but im hoping Red Cape and Solar Spirit bowl along in front. I think Red Cape is becoming frustrating to back, he's not getting much help from the handicapper and doesnt seem to really get the 6f, i'd drop him back to 5f and see how he gets on. Hinton Admiral travels well over 6f but doesnt seem to find much, i thought he'd win when dropped back to 5f and a strongly run 5f will be his best trip imo. Mandalay King has got another 6lbs to contend with, career best needed and although the cheekpieces have done the trick, i think he's worth opposing. Jarrow is another that doesnt find it easy to win and may need to drop a couple of pounds before winning. Just my view on things, interesting to hear what you think :ok

I must apologise I got called out to work this morning, as I mentioned above things going on at the moment. I've watched the race & he ran very well at a price which was much longer than I would have expected, I hope you were on ew. He has a squiggle from Timeform which I think is most unfair, yes he needs his conditions but generally he runs his race & I think he can win again, I just hope I can be there! Arabian is declared at Newmarket for Saturday, no news yet about a badge but I may go anyway. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing diary 2010 I was on the win at 5/1, the risk you take backing the night before. Was quite a remarkable drift before the off, went from about 5/1 to 10/1 in a matter of minutes. Would have backed each way at 10/1 but that's the way it goes, ran a decent race and will almost certainly be winning soon.

Re: Rio's Racing diary 2010 Quickly because I need to get off to Newmarket. Heavy showers forecast, any ease in the ground would help Arabian Spirit who keeps running well & going up in the weights without winning. He's up another 1lb from his last run but seems to be holding his form & likes a stiff track. 16 runners here & I've had an ew bet so :hope crossed we get no non runners. Tricky card but I've also backed Guided Missile in the 3.40. She looks an improver & won well at Chepstow LTO, she won't mind if the ground eases either. The other bet is Lay Time in the 4.15. Danehill Dante is looking exposed, Raymbek Batyr ran ok FTO at Donny but the Salisbury maiden that Lay Time was fifth on her only run last year looks decent form with winners aplenty from the race since. Again she won't mind any rain being by Gallileo. Bets. Arabian Spirit 10pts ew @ 14/1. Guided Missile 30pts @ 10/3. Lay Time 30pts @ 10/3/ All Bet365 & BOG. I'll be looking to do the same bets again on the track prices allowing. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing diary 2010 Ah the joys of the great British Summer, global warming!!! do me a favour. I set off in rain in West Yorkshire & arrived at Newmarket in rain & boy did it come down, the A1 was quite dodgy in places. Still the wet stuff suits Arabian, well its supposed to. He ran alright, flattened out about a furlong out & stayed on for fourth. Two non runners meant three places not four :eyes but then if they'd started he'd probably have got fifth. David Nolan the jockey said after he needs blinkers & will win with them on. After the run on the Rowley course Paul Hanagan said we could try blinkers, however it seems Richard doesn't want to run him in them, we'll see what happens next. Guided Missile was a let down, never looked like getting in the race which was a bit galling having just watched the stable win the super sprint at Newbury. Still I'll let them off as Lay Time won the maiden in good style. Even then the Noseda horse was a non runner & I get hit by a 40p rule 4 so I got 90pts back instead of 130 which equates to 2/1. On the track Danehill Dante & Lay Time were joints at 2's & then 9/4 & I managed to get the top up bet on at a better price than the morning bet before she got backed in to 7/4. The other two bets were placed as well although I had the the extra 20pts on Arabian place only on the tote :eyes 160pts staked, 187.5pts returned, +27.5pts. Racing Club bets W/R 46/197 Stakes 5363 Returns 5911.10 P/L +548.10pts To say the Rowley course is just the other side of the devil's dyke there's a world of difference between the two. The old stands are very quaint & I like the thatched roof on the Weighing room. You can tell though that moneys been spent & there's plenty of bars & food outlets but as with everywhere they know how to charge. I like the pre parade ring in the trees right next to the owners & trainers bar, see pic below. The others are, a rather soggy parade ring, Arabian comes fourth, coming back in & Lay Time just about pays for the petrol. Re: Rio's Racing diary 2010 Well I'm about to get out & about again, the Brian Meehan trained 2yo Holiday Reading makes his debut tomorrow evening in the 7f maiden at Sandown. We have one of those situations though, it seems that Sandown won't let the club have any extra owners badges due to the fact that the Scissor Sisters are in concert after the last. Having looked at the Sandown web site it seems the usual price for the Premier enclosure is £25 on the day but tomorrow it's £38 & they're fretting they won't make enough money. Whats daft is Betfair is sponsoring the first race & have some complimentary tickets which is what I've got. That means I'll get in for nowt same as if I had an owners badge but can't go in the parade ring or the owners & trainers bar. I won't pretend I know much about the Scissor Sisters, I've heard the odd track but really I'm not bothered & will be bailing out before they even start. Tom Jones is on next week & that might be different, he's not a bad turn but I'm interested in the racing only really. I know they need to get the crowds in & new racegoers but they do seem to think that they can stick anything on a racecard & it's hardly top fare tomorrow. It's like Sundays, bouncey castle for the kids etc & any old rubbish on the track, for me they are falling between two stools. I'm staying over till Friday & had thought I might take in Epsom on Thurday evening but having looked at the card I don't know. The thing is they have got The Wanted (who?) playing after racing & it's the same scenario, I'll see, might take in the Sandown afternoon card instead. The other 2yo Ruby Night is entered at Newmarket on Friday evening & I did think I might apply for that & stop over on the way back. However they've not asked for applications for badges yet & guess what the bloody Scissor Sisters are playing there after. He's also entered at York on Saturday & so is Sunrise Safari so I'll get my name name down for that when they ask. I've just looked at that & Blondie & Scouting for Girls are playing live after, there is however a decent card, IT CAN BE DONE. I'm struggling a bit for something I really fancy for tomorrow. The first race I'll pass, the second is a nursery & I think I'll back the top one Mitie Mouse which won FTO & then got overfaced & a bad draw at Royal Ascot, no proper odds yet though. Holiday Reading looks to have found a tough race to start in & Meehan's saying his usually need the first run but we'll see. I think I may back Bajan Bear in the 7.40. No idea for the next. Shernando maybe in the last but it's a bit short at the moment. I'll have another look in the morning, If I don't get chance to post then I'll try to get something up at the hotel, I've stayed there before & I can usually get on line. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing diary 2010 Well here I am about five miles from Sandown trying to sort out what I'm backing (or not) tonight. I backed Mitie Mouse this morning just before I set off but I see now it's a non runner. Having logged into the club site it seems that they've debated taking Holiday Reading out due to the soft ground, however it's been decided to run because there's quite a few members going it seems which makes me think he's not expected to run well at all. He's a general 20's but I've had a bit matched at 34.0 on Betfair & put an order in for a place at 6.5 which is not matched as yet. I've gone off Bajan Bear as he seems to need fast ground. I'm left with Shernando in the last. No idea if he'll handle the ground but he goes on fibresand & the sire Hernando gets winners on soft. The best price at the Moment is 15/8 & I'll wait & see if I can do better at the track. Bets. Holiday Reading 5pts @ 34.0 & 5pts @ 6.5 place Betfair, part matched. Shernando 30pts @ 2/1 minimum at the track. Ruby Night is declared at Newmarket Friday evening, I've asked for a badge but won't know till tomorrow. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing diary 2010 The sun is out, the sky is blue, etc, etc, unlike yesterday when it chucked it down all day. I looked at Epsom again but it was never on for me, I thought about going to the Sandown afternoon meeting but couldn't find anything I even remotely fancied. Anyway Wednesday, Holiday Reading ran quite well I thought, just ran out of gas close home & was seventh beaten about 5l. Had a word with a chap from Betfair who I've met before & he said the jockey said he'd gone well & when the places were out of reach he'd just let him coast home, no point in knocking him about. He'll come on for that & on better ground he should go well next time. The Betfair bet was matched & I got the other on Shernando at 85/40 when most boards were 15/8 & 2's, which was great till two minutes later when it went 9/4 & then 5/2 before finishing next to last. Racing Club bets W/R 46/199 Stakes 5403 Returns 5911.10 P/L +508.10pts Pics are the Queen Mother's Special Cargo & Holiday Reading in the Pre parade ring. dscf1346.jpg Uploaded with ImageShack.us dscf1351o.jpg Uploaded with ImageShack.us I've managed to get a badge for Newmarket tonight where the other 2yo Ruby Night has his first run. The trainer sounds quite bullish about his chances but half the field hasn't run yet so who knows what lurks? Add to that Spencer's on top, what am I going to do when he comes in the parade ring? The vibe this morning seems to be for Roger Varian's Signor Sassi who holds a Gimcrack entry but that could mean owt or nowt. I've had a small ew & hope for a good run. In looking for something else to back I've gone for Focail Eile in the 7.10. This ones come back to form since returning to John Ryan with a win on the aw & a decent second at Ayr on Monday. In here off the same mark & goes on the ground. Bold Marc who escapes a pen for an apprentice race win looks the one to beat. I was going to head for home then but have decided to stay for the maiden at 7.40. There's an odds on fav from Gosden but the one that takes the eye is Cops and Robbers from Stoute's. This has not run yet & is a gelding so they'd need to win something with it to make it worth while training it. Anyway I've had a small bet. Bets. Ruby Night 10pts ew @ 7/1 Bet365 BOG. Focail Eile 10pts ew @ 13/2 Coral. Cops and Robbers 10pts ew @ 12/1 Bet 365 BOG. Not sure if I'll have a top up, I'll see how I feel. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing diary 2010 Back home again & getting ready to go back to work tomorrow :( Although it is just the one night as I've booked some hols while I can. I did think I might try to get to Goodwood but I think I'll wait & go to one of the other meetings. Ruby Night ran really well on Friday, he hit the front in the last furlong but just got tired close home & was third in a fourway photo beaten two heads. He looked magnificent before the race & he has a great attitude, he took it all in his stride & you wouldn't have known it was his first time, very professional. Mr Bell's a nice chap, interested in where we were all from, he seemed a bit suprised that nobody from Timeform or Betfair was there though. Even Spencer came across well both before & after the race. All being well he'll be out in a maiden in about three weeks, everything crossed that if I'm still working I'm not working because he must come on for that & unless we run into a good one he must go close. Two of the bets got the place up. Ruby Night went off at 8's which was slightly better than the price I took. Cops and Robbers was second but the odds on shot won easy. There was a 10p rule 4 in that race & the 60pts returned 57.6pts. I did have top up bets but win only so another 60pt loss to add on. Racing Club bets W/R 48/202 Stakes 5523 Returns 5968.70 P/L +445.70pts Pics are, going in the parade ring, ready to go out & coming back in, the last one didn't turn out that well & is a bit fuzzy. Re: Rio's Racing diary 2010 Ollie Pears runs My Arch in the first at Goodwood. I remember him saying at the stable vist they were looking at the long distance handicaps at Royal Ascot & here but he didn't run at the Royal meeting. He has run quite well this season though & he won over 2m 2f at Ponty at the start of June & then was an 11 length ninth in the Northumberland Plate with a 5lb pen which was a bit of an ask upped in class & down to 2m. This is an easier race today, back up in trip to 2m 5f & he'll like the ground which seems to have a bit of juice in it. He should be running on when most will have had enough & is a fair price for an ew bet. Bet. My Arch 10pts ew @12/1 Bet365. BOG. Possible runners at Thirsk on Saturday (Arabian Spirit) & Chester Sunday (Sunrise Safari) more later. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing diary 2010 Not a good run from My Arch yesterday, he dropped away quickly in the straight. I can't get on one of Ollie's when they win, oh well. Racing Club bets W/R 48/203 Stakes 5543 Returns 5968.70 P/L +425.70pts Arabian Spirit is declared for Thirsk on Saturday so I have asked for a badge, it looks like he will have blinkers on for the first time. I don't know yet about Sunrise Safari at Chester on Sunday. Ruby Night has been given entries in the Group 2 Mill Reef at Newbury & the Group 1 Middle Park at Newmarket on October 8th. These are early closing races & he'd need to win a maiden in some style first. Goodwood 3.15 I've backed Opinion Poll for this. The Ascot Gold Cup form is the best bit of form on offer & if he's not kept too far back like he has been in his last few runs he can win this. On that score it's good to see Dettori on top who's won on him before instead of Barzalona & Ajtebi who've both given him too much to do. Bet. Opinion Poll 40pts @ 11/2 Bet365 BOG. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing diary 2010 Update from Thursday first. Opinion Poll returned 260pts for 40pts staked. The free bet went down when Field of Miracles tailed off badly. Racing Club bets W/R 49/205 Stakes 5583 Returns 6228.70 P/L +645.70pts Right got to be quick I'm off for the train to Thirsk soon. Arabian Spirit runs in the 4.10. he keeps going up a bit for placing but seems in good form still. Blinkers first time today which has been mooted a few times before :hope The stables jockeys are all over the country so we have the sevices of P B Beggy, never heard of him, he's Irish & comes recommended but don't know by who. 17 runners so who knows, anyway I've had a bet. Mitie Mouse who I was going to back at Sandown the other day runs in the Nursery & I've backed Ventura Sands in the 3.40. At Goodwood Five Star Junior came back to something like LTO & was not beaten far last year in the opener & is lower in the weights today. Harlestone Times found the 2m & soft ground too much in the Plate at Newcastle last time & can bounce back here. Macs Power fits the Trends for the Stewards, the draw? The one I really fancy is Safari Storm in the 4.55, won well LTO after a decent break & given a fair mark in this Nursery. Bets. 10pts on all @ 20/1, 8/1, 9/1, 15/2, 8/1, 7/1 & 7/1 Except Safari Storm which is 30pts 15/2, all Hills BOG. Also done some very small stakes trebles, 5, 6 & 7 timers. Got to go, Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing diary 2010 Well the good thing it was a glorious day weather wise. It was a bit cloudy here in West Yorkshire so I didn't take my hat. Big mistake, I now have a very red head, so much so that if I go out I suspect the traffic will screech to a halt thinking the lights have changed. Not much joy on the punting front, mostly they ran alright. The two that didn't were the Fahey pair Ventura Sands who never got in the race & our lad Arabian who ran a similar sort of race. Can't blame the jockey, was it the blinkers or the ground too fast? I think he needs a break, he's had several good runs in hard races & needs a break to freshen him up by which time we might get a bit of juice in the ground for him. I did think I was going to collect with Mitie Mouse who went to the front a furlong out & then got done on the line. Over at Goodwood Five Star Junior was eighth, Harlestone Times got involved in the incident that saw Spencer & Moore on the floor. Macs Power was a good third in the Stewards Cup, Hoof It must be some animal to win that well under 10st. Finally Safari Storm was about 3l third so no return on the day. Racing Club bets W/R 49/212 Stakes 5673 Returns 6228.70 P/L +555.70pts So what of Sunrise Safari at Chester today? Theres no doubt that his last two runs were a similar level of form to when he won at Leicester & Windsor last year & the good fourth at Donny at the Leger meeting. They were all at 6f though & this is nearly a mile but he did run at almost this trip two runs back at Beverley & was staying on for second. I'm not keen on this track as regular readers will know but he has a fair draw in 4. Hanagan as gone for Viva Ronaldo whos got two wins, two seconds & a fourth from five goes round here. However he's a bit like Sunrise in that the fourth was at this trip & the other runs were at shorter. Captain Ramius won the ladies race at Ascot last week but is up 9lb & drawn wide. My Kingdom seems to be running into form but again is drawn quite wide. Don't know is the answer, a small bet with an ew saver I think. Bet. Sunrise Safari 10pts win 5pts place @ 17/2 Bet365 BOG. Ruby Night looks to going for a maiden at Newcastle on Wednesday. Arabian in the parade ring. Rio. dscf1366a.jpg Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Re: Rio's Racing diary 2010 All in all that wasn't a bad run from Sunrise at Chester, he was never going to be suited by the track & actually stayed on quite well without looking like landing a place. Back to somewhere more straightforward next time I should think. Racing Club bets W/R 49/213 Stakes 5688 Returns 6228.70 P/L +540.70pts Ruby Night goes at Newcastle tomorrow in an 11 runner class 6 maiden. Those that have run don't look up to much although True Bond ran quite well on her Debut. Colbyor makes his debut from the Fahey stable but they're not going too well at the moment. Ollie Pears has Passionada making her debut, again the stables not flying & this one may need a bit of time. Valiant Arthur might be the best of the newcomers but the stables runners usually need a run. I would be very disappointed if we don't win this, no bet though as he's under 1.4 on Betfair although the overound is 120%. Just a watch later for me as I'm working :sad Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing diary 2010 Well he won, only by a head though from the filly of Ollie Pears Passionada. I got to watch the race as I copped for a migraine on Tuesday evening & ended up having the day off work. At first look he seemed to make hard work of it but the pair pulled 8l clear & apparently Ollie & the owners of the filly were a bit down as they thought they would win. She's in the big sales race at Redcar in October & should win a maiden before then. The Fahey horse was a non runner & Ruby went off at 1/4 so no bet there to ease the throbbing head. No idea where next, Spencer it seems thinks he might need four or five weeks till his next run having had two starts in 12 days & he's a big baby. Saharia is declared for a seven runner seller at Leicester on Sunday, again I'm working so I can't go. It seems he now doesn't want to put anything in & won't even go on the gallops without been forced. I'll have a look at the race later. Holiday Reading was in at Leicester as well & Lingfield on Saturday but they have decided to wait a bit longer. Newbury & Newmarket next week have been mentioned but again I'm working so I'm hoping they wait till after when I'm off. News from Paul Nicholls. Plenty Pocket has had a breathing op & should be back in work around the middle of August with a view to running in a novice hurdle in October. Indian Daudie will be going novice chasing but might take in a handicap hurdle first, the Fixed Brush race at Haydock's Betfair chase meeting might be an option. Both have done really well over the Summer & have strengthened up loads so :hope that the breathing op works. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing diary 2010 Having just finished a twelve hour night shift I am ready for bed. Had a quick look at the Leicester seller that Saharia runs in today last evening & again this morning. It looks like a match between him & the Filly Night Trade who is a bit of a Catterick specialist who landed her third win there in a 6f handicap five days ago. She does have form at other tracks & at 7f too & she looks the one to beat. if (big if) Saharia ran up to the form of his Kempton runs in August & September last year he'd dot up here. Tom Queally rides, somebody needs to tell him, miss the break, bury him & 3f out start to weave your way through & stick his head in front on the line. As the Meerkat says "Simples" No odds as I write, small bet at SP, I would think about 11/4ish. Bet. 20pts Saharia @ SP Bet365. :zzz:zzz:zzz Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing diary 2010 Nearly went to plan. Queally dropped him out the back & came though to challenge in the final furlong but was just held & beaten a head by Night Trade. Watching it a couple of times I got the feeling he could have got there had he put a bit more in but that's the horse! Anyway he won't be doing it to us anymore, he was claimed by Michael Attwater after the race. He seems to have plenty of runners on the aw & during the Winter so it looks like that's where Saharia will be running from now on. Those running the club are impressed with Ollie Pears & I wouldn't disagree, they are saying he should get another horse in the future, next year maybe? Racing Club bets W/R 49/214 Stakes 5708 Returns 6228.70 P/L +520.70pts Holiday Reading is in at Newmarket on Friday & also at Newbury the same day along with Sunrise Safari. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing diary 2010 Sunrise doesn't go to Newbury, he's been put in a claimer at Carlisle next Wednesday which makes me think they're trying to get a win out of him in what would possibly be his last season with the club. I would love to be there if he were to win as there's no doubt he is the club's character & I have followed him about a bit & he was the runner for my first owners badge. However I'm off next week & am spoilt for choice. There's the Ebor meeting starting Wednesday, although the way the rain is falling in Yorkshire the only thing going down the straight on the Knavesmire might be the Swans off the Ouse. There's also some meetings down South that would fall nicely for a few days away & could get me ticking off a few more tracks on the quest to do the lot. I don't have to make my mind up till Sunday, maybe early Monday at the latest so I'll watch the weather & the riots!! Holiday Reading is declared for the 6.35 at Newmarket tomorrow. All he has to do is beat the Noseda trained Harvard n Yale who the Timeform boys think we need to find at least 20lb to do so & thats if he doesn't improve for his one run at Newbury where two of the only three to run behind him that have raced since have won! Greek War who was two places in front of us on debut is also in the race. Add to that Mubaraza from John Dunlop's who showed promise on the track on his first start & then there's several unraced including, one from Ed Dunlop's who cost 320,000 Euros, a Hannon newcomer who's a brother to Cai Shen, one from Gosden's by Dylan thomas, another from Greek War's trainer al Zarooni & not to mention the bred in the purple Gospel Choir from Stoutey who's a Galileo colt out of the top class Chorist!!! £$%^ me he's a shoo in, no wonder they've put him in the Racing Post Trophy!!!! At the moment he's 9.6 on Betfair :lol with the overround at 175% :rollin It has been noted that Meehan's come on for their first run, just by how much I wonder. Can't see me getting on & I'd want at least 20's. I'll see how we get on when I get home. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing diary 2010 Watched Holiday Reading's maiden race the other night without knowing the result & got rather excited when he was bang there 2f out & going well. However he then ran out of steam & came home in eighth beaten about 9l. I've had an e-mail from one of the regulars which tells me that he got to the start where he got edgy & then boiled over so he had nothing left at the end of the race. This is confirmed on the club site where it says they're going to try to get him to relax by schooling him with a pony which will then probably accompany him the the track in future, hrm!! Anyway I'm off to Carlisle tomorrow where Sunrise Safari runs in the second race, a claimer just short of 6f. Dandy Nicholls has Esprit de Midas in this, he was with Kevin Ryan & has some fair form at this trip & on soft grouind but seemed to lose his way. First run for Dandy was at Epsom on Derby day & the track didn't suit. He's had a break since then & this is a big drop in class & he'd be the one to beat for me. At the moment we're about 15/8 on Betfair & I'll have another look in the morning at having a punt on Sunrise or anything else. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing diary 2010 Last night on Betfair Sunrise was favourite at around 2's. This morning Esprit de Midas is about 13/8 & we're 5/2 which are the prices that Bet365 have up as I write. He would be the one that we have to beat, he's down in class but so are we & we're in better form. He's giving us 3lb plus 3lb that Lee Topliss is claiming, stiff track to suit & should go on the ground. Not much from the Timeform boys except that we're second in the ratings to Tombi who's now with Ollie Pears. Cross everything :hope Lee rides Above the Stars for Fahey in the 3.15. She won her only start at 2yo at Beverley & then was off a year. Three runs this season & looks to be coming back to some form with a 3.5l eighth at Haydock LTO. Only 3yo in here with a bunch of exposed looking sorts. Should go on the ground being by Piccolo & worth a small bet. Syncopated Lady looks the improver in a weak race at 4.25. Third last twice at this trip, staying on at Thirsk & Musselburgh & should go on the ground being by Acclamation. The rest look a poor bunch & this would be my main hope for the petrol money & I will be having a top up at the track on this one. I don't usually bet at below 2/1 but I like Seville in the Voltigeur at York. Sea Moon should improve but needs to find 20lb at least to get to Seville's level. Namibian is tough & should go well but if Seville runs up to the form of his last two starts he'll win this. Bets. Sunrise Safari 40pts @ 5/2 Above the Stars 10pts @ 10/1 Syncopated Lady 40pts @ 3/1 all Bet365 BOG. Seville 100pts @ 6/4 Hills BOG. Time to get ready. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing diary 2010 One of those days yesterday. Sunrise ended up going off the 13/8f with the winner Esprit de Midas drifting out to 3/1 third in the betting as some money came for Tombi. Sunrise was a poor fifth after been scrubbed along early to hold a position. We waited for him to come back in after but he didn't appear & a few of us went to the end of the track to see if we could see him. Next thing he's coming back up the straight!!! The old sod wouldn't pull up after the race & went all the way round the track. Lee got off & said he was never going & in fact he said he probably went faster going round on his own. The 3yo was stone last in the next. Syncopated Lady looked like she might pull it round but was headed close home & finished second. Seville was a major disappointment. The winner looked good but the time was nothing special & we were a bit puzzled by the run from the others, as the chap from Timeform said "They can't all have run that far below form" but Namibian was beaten early & clearly stays so who knows. Watched the race in the Owners & Trainers with Tom Dascombe who has Brown Panther in the Leger & that was a good second at Newbury the other day after a hard race in Germany. He looked a bit down after the race but I wouldn't be put off by what looked a visually impressive run but which might not be quite as good as it seems, we'll see. The top up bet meant 230pts staked & no return, ouch!! Racing Club bets W/R 49/218 Stakes 5938 Returns 6228.70 P/L +290.70pts I've backed Crystal Capella in the Yorkshire Oaks today. The 3yo's all looked closely matched on Irish Oaks form & need to find a bit more to get to the level the selection showed when winning the Princess of Wales's stakes at Newmarket two runs back. Last time the pace in the Nassau didn't help & the step back up to 12f here with conditions to suit can see her win, she's also two from two at the track. Bet. Crystal Capella 50pts @ 7/2 Hills BOG. Re: Rio's Racing diary 2010 Another shocker yesterday with Crystal Capella refusing to settle early & then never looking like getting near in the straight. In the end they were strung out like 3m chasers which leads me to believe it's the ground. Much has been made of the new drainage improving things & yes there's no longer the standing water on the track but doing the drains doesn't change the make up of the soil which seems to be clay based & retains moisture which when you get the sun on it goes tacky. Plenty of fancied horses have run below form in the two days so far, Seville, Namibian, Await the Dawn, West Leake Hare & Eagles Peak on day one. Crown Dependancy, Angels Will Fall, Gamilati, Shumoos, Crystal Capella & Wild Coco yesterday. I did think I might go today but I'm not going to bother & not just because of the going. At £27 to get in plus train fare, thats £40 before I've had a bet. When it was three days we used to get seven races on the card, now it's six races the first three days & seven only on the Saturday. "Come racing" screams Big Mac, less races, Queue up at the stinking toilets, take a mortgage out on something to eat or if you can get near the bar a drink. I used to love York, not any more, rip off. Racing Club bets W/R 49/219 Stakes 5988 Returns 6228.70 P/L +240.70pts Just to cheer me up even more there's now a stable vist to Manton next Month on the only bloody Friday that I'm working in September :wall Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing diary 2010 Bit quiet at the moment, so much so I painted the fence today :loon I'd got half an eye on Brighton & Goodwood on Friday & Saturday but looking at hotels it was going to be a bit pricey. Then I noticed the evening meeting at Cartmel tomorrow which is one of the two northern tracks I've not been to (Perth is the other) but the card is worse than the weather forecast, heavy rain & strong winds. They race there again Saturday which could be an option, I'll hang fire though because Ruby Night is entered in the nursery at Newmarket on Saturday. They're not asking for applications for badges yet which makes me think he might not run. Anyway I've had eyes peeled for Saharia running for his new connections of Michael Attwater & Brooklands racing, the latter I can find little about, if I google it I get all sorts about the old Brooklands motor racing track. What I do know is since the start of 2005 they've had 460 runners & 34 winners with Attwater having nearly half of those at 21 wins from 212 runs, other than that, Saharia runs in the 5.00 at Lingfield tomorrow over 6f. Raceform have him 9lb clear of the second rated on his best form, that of course is from a year ago. Bet365 have odds & he's 10/1 So do VCbet & he's 18's. One last go, win lose or draw & thats it. Bet. Saharia 10pts win & 5 pts place @ 18/1 VCbet BOG. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing diary 2010 And that's it for Saharia, last of six, not beaten a long way though & I've never thought he was a 6f type really, still I could end up poor waiting for him to win, enough!! Racing Club bets W/R 49/220 Stakes 6003 Returns 6228.70 P/L +225.70pts Ruby Night is declared for the first at Newmarket tomorrow, a 7f nursery & he's off 79 which looks reasonable. Amazing Storm from Hannon is an improver & is likely to be fav with us second in the betting. At the moment he's 3's with us a best price of 7/2. I have a badge & will be going unless he's pulled out of the race early which I understand might happen. Then I have to decide what to do because I am assured that I can still get in. Falls of Lora looks a non runner already & so does Prime Defender in the 3.30 & I suspect there will be a few more. After our race is one of those 2yo sales races Samitar won the Albany at Royal Ascot but is a skinny price & who knows what lurks in the unraced ones. Likewise the 2yo maiden that follows. Monsieur Chevalier would dot up on the form of his Golden Jubilee second on soft but was then next to last in the July Cup over C&D but was said to be unsuited by the fast ground. The last 3yo to win this was in 2001 but Swiss Dream should go well back to 6f but not sure about the ground. Macs Power would look the other with a chance. Three fiendish handicaps to follow, although I can't see me staying for the last anyway. At the moment I would back Ruby Night & unless I have a vision of biblical proportions it'll be get the pin out time. We'll see in the morning. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing diary 2010 A late update, I wanted to see what was said on the club site after Ruby Night's run last Saturday but nothing appeared till Tuesday by which time I was working nights. Anyway he was a bit disappointing in finishing fifth, beaten less than 2l though. It was reported that they weren't sure if it was the ground, the trip or a combination of both. Spencer said he was still a big baby & would be a nice 3yo. What was actually said by Jamie was "If he was mine I'd put him away till next year" Mr Bell also thinks he'll do better next season & I would be suprised if he's seen again before next May. Holiday Reading was in at Brighton last Friday & at Leicester next Tuesday but will not run. Sunrise Safari runs today at York in the 4.30 a 7f handicap with 19 runners. I attempted to look at the race last night but gave up, it looks impossible. I've had an ew on him just in case. I did ask for a badge but for only the second tme I've missed out, I thought I might go anyway but the card looks like the usual Sunday rubbish. Bet. Sunrise Safari 10pts ew @ 16/1 Bet365 BOG. Pics of Ruby before the race last week. Rio. dscf1385y.jpg Uploaded with ImageShack.us dscf1387x.jpg Uploaded with ImageShack.us dscf1389v.jpg Uploaded with ImageShack.us
