Re: Rio's Racing Diary

I reckon you should post up a photo of yourself so we can say hi if ever see you on course. :)
Not sure about putting up a photo however should you be attending a meeting where I'm likely to be & I note from your thread you were at Ripon last week then let me know & we'll arrange some thing. After giving the Monday meeting at Ponty the swerve it's off to Beverley again today. A couple of singles although one is at Southwell, & a trixie plus singles today & a look at some 2yo fillies to start with. 1.55 I've seen a couple of these in Arranmore Girl who was 4th here last week & Passionateprincess who was last of eight at Ripon the day after. Looking back at my notes I've neither a positive or negative comment for both of them & in terms of the speed numbers given while Arranmore Girl made some late headway into that 4th the 20 she clocked is nothing much & an 8 for Passionateprincess would seem to indicate that looking elsewhere is in order. Ayresome Angel clocked a 39 when 3rd of four in testing conditions at Musselburgh on her first run & from a form angle this would probably set the standard, made the running there & drawn to attack in stall 2 here so should she handle the faster ground she could take a bit of pegging back. The one with the best number is Bond Bombshell with a 55 from the 6th at Wolves where having chased the lead she faded in the last furlong, the bare form is weak & the draw here in 11 is off putting. Of the unraced ones Michael Dods is five from 12 here the last five seasons with his 2yo's so Lady McGuffy needs looking at. Kieren Fallon is three from seven when riding for Mark Brisbourne & Pivotal Dream would be another to look at. As usual I'll need to see these before deciding to play or not. 2.30 Go Dan Go has run 2nd in both starts this season so is in form but looks the sort to keep finding at least one to beat him. Mustaqbal looks one of Hamdan's lesser lights & the trainer remains in my bad books. Thowar showed his first bit of decent form in three runs with a fair 4th at Kempton in December having raced with the pace for a long way, a mark off 66 is fair enough & could go well here on handicap debut. I feel though that this could be between Beach Action & Billy Bond who were 2nd & 3rd at Musselburgh LTO. With the 5lb that Jack Garritty knocked off there Billy Bond was getting 7lb & was beaten a length & a half, he's actually 2lb worse off here with Tony Hamilton taking over so unless the extra 100 yards or so & the faster ground make a difference he really shouldn't be turning that form round. The one go Billy Bond has had on this going was here over 5f's when last of 14 on his second run, the fastest ground Beach Action has seen was good on debut when last of seven at Sandown. I'll take Beach Action for the trixie bet in this. 3.00 Johnston has won the last two runnings of this handicap & tries for a hat trick with Enlace who has some fair form without winning at a decent level in handicaps & I'm hoping this one finds at least one too good here. That could be Charlie Appleby's Bow and Arrow who's a battler having worked hard to win at Lingfield a couple of weeks ago, all his form is on the aw though having been well beaten on his sole turf run on fast ground at Yarmouth last year but that was on debut. I like course form here which Pleiades brings to the table having made all to win his maiden on fast ground at this distance last September, Stoute does well here & is starting to move up a gear now, he's the pick. 4.00 Next Stop was a fair 3rd here at 8.5f's last week & steps up to nearly 10f's today, tried that sort of trip at Donny the time before & didn't get home & this is a stiff old climb up the hill here. Atlantic Affair is one that's been running up a string of 4th's on the aw & the hope is that the return to fast turf here where her sole win at 7.5f's occurred in June 13 does the trick. That though was a class 6 maiden & I'm not having her here. I'll have a go with Gleese the Devil who's only a 4yo & might have more to come this season having had a few promising runs last year for a yard going well. 4.30 The days first single is Thankstomonty who ran quite well in the first two of three maidens last season at 7f's & is bred to like this step up to almost 10f's today. The mark of 68 for a first go handicapping seems fair enough & the faster ground should help too. Peterhouse got off the mark for John Gosden at Lingfield in January & is up 5lb, but having switched from Princess Haya to Godolphin he's now got a new owner & left Gosden for Jason Ward who's none from 16 here. Bin Suroor runs Stay Strong who's another that should like the trip, ran with promise late last year on the aw but was pretty dreadful at a mile in an egg & spoon Redcar maiden a couple of weeks ago. Johnston's won three of the last four runnings of this but on the form shown by Donna Graciosa so far he shouldn't be winning this year's renewal with her & if he does so I shall be most unamused. Now I had noted that Danny Tudhope was here to ride Beach Action in the 2.30 but not anything afterwards, a check shows that having had that one ride here he's legging it to Southwell for a sole ride in the first there which is the second single of the day. Ingleby Hollow showed hints of ability in three turf runs last season & makes his handicap debut in a class 6 here giving weight to what looks a pretty ropey lot to me. The only one to show any kind of form is Rock Heroine & if Ingleby Hollow isn't winning then she probably will. I took the 5/2 last evening & I'm pleased to see that he's a bit shorter now. Bets Beach Action 6/1 Pleiades 2/1 Gleese the Devil 5/1 1pt trixie plus 3 x 2pt singles = 10pts staked, Betfair Sportsbook Thankstomonty 30pts @ 11/4 Betfair Sportsbook Ingleby Hollow 30pts @ 5/2 Betvictor, all BOG Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary It's a good job the weather was glorious yesterday because the punting certainly wasn't. Having cast an eye at the fillies for the first I decided to go with Ayresome Angel & a bet was stuck at 100/30. She stuck on for 3rd but 4l's is a long way in a 5f race. For a brief moment I thought that Bond Bombshell who I'd got top rated was going to pop in at just the 16/1 but Arranmore Girl who made all was too strong for her. Beach Action was on the drift & never got involved in the next where the well backed Go Dan Go just held on to please the money followers. Pleiades comes out for the next with two handlers & I can't decide if he's getting a sweat on or been for a tattoo because he has a most odd mark behind the saddle. Whatever it is it's a bit off putting & he too is easy in the market. Heading to the three furlong pole & the climb up the hill & he as a chance & then Bow and Arrow turns on the turbo, it looks like the rest have gone into slow motion as he powers clear to win by just the 13l's. Pleiades is 3rd. Enlace from Johnston's is backed into 2/1f & is stone last of the five, beaten 21l's, time for the stewards to have a word? Well no actually. With Atlantic Affair a non runner Gleese the Devil goes off the 2/1 jolly. Up the hill & he's behind but then the penny drops a bit & he closes up but it's too late, he's 4th beaten a length & two short heads. Now I need Thankstomonty who's all the rage in the market & backed to 6/4f. He's a bit keen but is challenging Spring Dixie up the hill but is he going to get past? Yes he does right in the shadow of the post but Peterhouse has come the other side of them & nutted the pair of them. Bugger, I hadn't fancied that one & even less so when he'd unseated Andrew Elliott going to the start & got loose, in fact I was surprised he'd run never mind won. Ah well exit stage left. I've missed the Southwell race that Tudhope had left for after the disappointing run of Beach Action, both he & myself are disappointed again because having gone off at 5/4 Ingelby Hollow is a well beaten 6th. 60pts down from the singles & 10pts from the trixie. Singles etc W/R 4-20 Stakes 278pts Returns 342.5pts Profit/Loss +64.5pts Multiple bets Stakes 117pts Returns 77pts Profit/Loss -40pts Exacta/Trifecta -£4.80 The not sure what to call it but if it cops I’ll be on a beach somewhere with a cold drink in one hand & a hot blonde in the other bet Stakes 40pts Returns 33.09pts Profit/Loss -6.91pts Expenses £520 Straight back on the horse so to speak with a run to Donny. A single & a lucky 15 split with Donny & Sandown. Birdman hosed up at Thirsk on Saturday & runs in the first with a 6lb pen against 13 rivals giving them all 6lbs & more. He's 8/11 as I write & even I'm not that demented to get involved here. 1.50 Aabir looked like he might need the run at Beverley last week & probably ran into one in the shape of Antiquarium so the length & a quarter 2nd there doing his best work late on should have him spot on now & I'll have him in the lucky 15. Sandown 2.00 I was impressed by Postponed when he landed the Great Voltiguer last August & he should make a good 4yo. Drops back to 10f's here but that doesn't worry me, after the Voltiguer the Leger was mentioned but Luca Cumani said then he'd be sticking to shorter trips. Tullius made hard work of winning the Doncaster Mile & he's the other way in that this stiff 10f's will stretch him. The danger could be Cannock Chase who's not been seen since winning a Group 3 at Royal Ascot but is the type that Stoute does well with. I still think he needs to find a good bit to get to the level of Postponed though. Sandown 2.30 If Shifting Power runs up to his Group 1 form from early last season then on these terms he wins this. Bow Creek, Custom Cut & Here Comes When all have to give him weight & while Shifting Power's last run was a disappointing one in August he had been on the go a while by then. Anywhere near the form of the English/Irish Guineas or the Prix Jean Prat would be good enough, he goes fresh having won FTO the last two seasons & the ground should be spot on. 2.50 I did note Golden Spun from the visit to O'Meara's but I'm against him here. He was bought out of Bryan Smart's for £65k which is a lot for this yard, he won his maiden at Carlisle on fast ground on his third try & ended the season winning a nursery at Ponty off 75 by a nose. He's 3lb higher here which is fair enough but this is a bit better race & while I think they will get more out of him he might find one too good today. That one is Wanting from Charlie Appleby's. He won his first two in good style at Chelmsford & Kempton & was just held in a decent race at Wolves at this class LTO, the 4th there has since won the 3yo aw sprint championship at Lingfield. First go on grass but Chelmsford rides slow & Kempton & Wolves would be more for the fast ground types so he ought to handle turf. Stable is in fine form & he's the days single. 4.00 Signore Piccolo runs without a pen here having won an apprentice handicap at Ripon last week, he's due to go up 4lb for that win but runs here off effectively 1lb less than last week with Josh Doyle able to claim the full 7lb. The ground is a bit quicker but that should be ok, the slight doubt is that it's a better race than Ripon, however he did it well & I'll take him for the lucky 15. Bets Aabir 9/4 Postponed 9/4 Shifting Power 11/4 Signore Piccolo 5/2 1pt lucky 15 Betvictor Wanting 30pts @ 11/4 Skybet, all BOG Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary After a reasonable run another disappointing effort punting wise yesterday. The good thing Birdman duly dotted up in the first having briefly touched 11/10, already due to go up 13lbs from today he will now get a serious dose of lead poisoning. Aabir is up first for me & he looks ok. The race under way & they crawl for the first 6f's, the time was by far the most over standard on the card & then the leader kicks early in the straight & plays catch me if you can? They can't. Aabir is a poor 5th of six, he has no change of gears & it doesn't help that he's short of room more than once, one of the widest tracks in the Country, six runners & you get stuck in behind :eyes Inside to watch Postponed try to make all at Sandown but he can't although he keeps on well enough for 2nd & will strip fitter for next time. Watch the two miler here & then back inside for the Sandown Mile. Shifting Power moves up to challenge nicely but then can't quicken when asked, he's 3rd while Custom Cut wins for Tudhope/O'Meara. This has the feel of it not going my way, I want Wanting, I need Wanting. Wanting looks well to me but one of the regulars who's also backed him thinks he's a bit small. True he's not the biggest but looks good enough to me. Away they go & Wanting is in behind tracking the pace, heading to the final furlong & Wanting is wanting some room, a gap, go through it, he does, quicken, he doesn't. Wanting is found wanting & finishes 4th. Now I'm wanting to go home, there's an hour until Signore Piccolo & the feeling that this is not going to be my day is now pretty much a certainty, exit stage right. When I get home I find I've made the right choice, I've not actually watched the race but a look at the form comments make me think that I may have chucked the teddy out of the cot....

In rear, switched right to outer and headway 2f out, ridden over 1f out, stayed on well final furlong, nearest finish
£rd, right well another no return. Singles etc W/R 4-21 Stakes 308pts Returns 342.5pts Profit/Loss +34.5pts Multiple bets Stakes 132pts Returns 77pts Profit/Loss -55pts Exacta/Trifecta -£4.80 The not sure what to call it but if it cops I’ll be on a beach somewhere with a cold drink in one hand & a hot blonde in the other bet Stakes 40pts Returns 33.09pts Profit/Loss -6.91pts Expenses £530 Ripon appeals more than Donny's evening card so off we head again. A single, a tilt at windmills again spread around the Country & a likely bet in the 2yo race. Ripon 1.45 Signore Botti owes me one after Aabir yesterday & I'm hoping to strike early with his Norab here for the single bet. He's up 8lb for a win at Chemlsford at the start of the Month but it was a class 2 & a decent affair & he won in some style. He won on turf at Sandown in September at 14f's also in decent style & being a 4yo there should be more to come & the extra couple of furlongs here may even suit him more. Lady Kashaan is upped 7lbs for a win at Musselburgh on her return & that puts her on the same mark as when she was runner up in this two years ago, she should go well but I feel she may need a bit of cut in the ground to show her best. Ripon 2.15 My 2yo speed numbers have First Bombardment clocking a 71 when just held in the Brocklesby, the 50 he then put up in the Scottish version would look a touch disappointing but the ground was very testing at Musselburgh that day, he would set the form standard here. Risk Adjusted had Association well behind when 2nd on debut at Redcar last week & these are the only others to have run. That was a slightly lower class than this & the races First Bombardment has contested but the number of 89 for that given that he was a bit outpaced two out but stayed on well is decent. Drawn next to each other here & Risk Adjusted gets 2lb, unless something else jumps out from the unraced ones I suspect I will be with Risk Adjusted here. The rest of the bets are with the perm, a slight change in that the doubles & trebles are win only this time with a slight increase in stake has a result. Ripon 2.50 I backed King Torus in the Spring Mile where he got murdered when making his run or he would have placed I think, this is less competitive & he's on a winning mark for me. I had considered a single but missed the price last evening so he just goes in the multiple bet. Leicester 3.05 Straits of Malacca looks a progressive 4yo, two wins last July & then not seen until a close 2nd at Catterick in this class 17 days ago. Up 3lbs but should be more to come, seems to go on any ground as well. Haydock 3.30 Alejandro won a good race at this level at York last Summer off just 2lb less, seems to go fresh would appear to like the faster ground so unless our old mate Kirkland Talksb&**&%ks has had the taps on too long & it wouldn't surprise me if that's the case then he should go well in this. Sandown 3.50 Le Reve ran a good race for 2nd at the pre Cheltenham meeting at Kempton two Months ago & has a nice pull at the weights with Rocky Creek here. He's also had a tough race in the National while Le Reve has had a nice break, won here at 3m+ in November & looks to need to go right handed, slight doubt about the faster ground but you can't have everything. Ripon 4.00 Pinzolo is only a 4yo so there should be more to come, won a race at Lingfield on the aw at this class LTO & he's 5lbs higher here & he has form on fastish turf. The rest of these look quite exposed & not that well handicapped to me. Haydock 5.15 If I'm still hanging around Ripon waiting for this then I will have had a decent day. Memory Cloth won this last year & is 2lbs higher, ran quite well at Newcastle when I had a small bet two weeks ago & that should have blown off any cobwebs for the repeat bid here, might be a bit quick if Kirkland hasn't over done the agua but again you can't have it all. Bets Norab 25pts @ 10/3 Paddy Power 1. King Torus 2/1 2. Straits of Malacca 9/2 3. Alejandro 6/1 4. Le Reve 9/1 5. Pinzolo 9/4 6. Memory Cloth 4/1 Cover these in six doubles, six trebles, three fourtimers & the sixtimer using the following plan. The doubles/trebles to 0.5pts win & the four & sixtimers to 0.5pts ew = 10pts staked

1 X X X X X X X X

2 X X X X X X X X

3 X X X X X X X X

4 X X X X X X X X

5 X X X X X X X X

6 X X X X X X X X

Re: Rio's Racing Diary By 4pm yesterday I'd had enough, it's one thing when it's not going your way when the sun is out such as Beverley on Thursday & it's another when two days later it feels like January & it's chucking it down. It's looking quite good at first as Norab hits the front up the straight, now go clear. He does the opposite & ends up 4th. The top rated 2yo Risk Adjusted is the stand out in the pre parade. He then really stands out having taken a fancy to the filly Lady Argentium, well I assume it was the filly he fancied. It's not out long though & by the time they go to the main ring he's put it away. I've just decided I'll back him anyway when he wins best turned out :eyes Kiss of death, I still back him but to a reduced stake. He's a bit slowly away but moves up to challenge from two out, then he goes one way & then the other in behind Excessable who's taken it up from the leader First Bombardment. Excessable clears away to win by three & a half & is impressive, I've given him 94 for that which would mean he's quite smart. Risk Adjusted gets 77 which is a bit below the 89 for his debut but I suspect the pre race antics didn't help. First Bombardment clocks a 75 which makes me think it's about right as he had a 71 in the Brocklesby on decent ground. Now come the runs that drive me wild at times. There are two non runners in the next but King Torus is backed as if defeat is impossible, he goes off at 11/8 :eek This is the form line from the Racing Post..

Midfield on inner, pushed along over 2f out, never threatened
To these tied old eyes he got stuck behind a wall of horses on the fence & at one point Tudhope had to snatch up & all chance went. This is the form line from the Sporting Life...
Mid-division, not clear run over 2f out and again over 1f out, kept on inside final furlong, never able to challenge
That's more like how I see it, the stewards didn't see anything but Tudhope decided he ought to say something...
No Stewards Enquiry. Daniel Tudhope, the rider of KING TORUS (IRE), unplaced, reported that the gelding hung right handed and was denied a clear run in the home straight.
Which is slightly more polite than I'm saying at this point. Now it starts to rain, it's already cold, I retreat to the betting shop. A. to keep warm & B. to watch the 3.05 at Leicester. I can't believe what I'm seeing, Straits of Malacca is 10/1 :eek I check my notes, I've backed him at 9/2, that can't be right, 10/1 :eek It is though, I wonder how this one will run?
Slowly into stride, soon prominent, ridden over 2f out, weakened final furlong (op 9/1)
8th of nine, I'm now doing my nut....
No Stewards Enquiry. Keagan Latham, the rider of STRAITS OF MALACCA, unplaced, reported that the gelding moved poorly throughout. The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities.
If that one was trying I'm a Chinaman. Alejandro runs a reasonable race from the front at Haydock & gets 4th. Le Reve also does his best with a 3rd in the big race at Sandown. I can't win anything now & I'm half toying with backing Pinzolo but won't play at less than 2's. A look at the prices & he's 13/8 & 7/4 & I'm not having that, in fact I've had enough & leave before the off. This turns out to be best decision I've made all day...
Chased clear leader, ridden over 3f out, weakened inside final furlong (op 13/8)
5th of seven, again no stewards enquiry but once more someone feels the need to explain...
No Stewards Enquiry. The representative of Charlie Appleby the trainer of PINZOLO, placed fifth, reported that the gelding was unsuited by the track. The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of PINZOLO during routine testing failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Three shockers, not a peep from the stewards & yet excuses are offered, there's a nasty smell around. Not a sausage again Singles etc W/R 4-22 Stakes 333pts Returns 342.5pts Profit/Loss +9.5pts Multiple bets Stakes 132pts Returns 77pts Profit/Loss -55pts Exacta/Trifecta -£4.80 The not sure what to call it but if it cops I’ll be on a beach somewhere with a cold drink in one hand & a hot blonde in the other bet Stakes 50pts Returns 33.09pts Profit/Loss -16.91pts Expenses £540 I was ready to down tools but I'm going to see history made with Mowgli, Wetherby's first ever flat meeting, I won't get a price but what's the betting that it's still the coldest place on the planet & the sun is beaming down here. I'll swerve the first but suspect I will play in one or more of the maidens after a look. there are two divisions of the 7f maiden & Wardat Dubai would appear to set the form standard on his two runs at Newmarket last backend. However the bare form is not that good & I suspect I may look at something that's yet to set foot on the track, the Haggas newcomer looks interesting. Mount Tahan is a similar type in division two & again I'll probably have a poke at something else, bin Suroor has one making his debut here. For the 3.35 I'll have Miss Macnamara who ran quite well on her return at Catterick having been held up & given a lot to do, Jack Garritty's on again so don't overdo the waiting tactics please especially as this would look to be her minimum trip. Another maiden at 4.10 where Awjab looks another to take on having placed once in six tries & was only 5th in a shocking maiden at Southwell on his first start for Brien Ellison 17 days ago. Again a look at them first. In the 4.40 I'm with the progressive looking one Secret Hint. He's only had five starts & has won two so there should be more to come from this 4yo. The last run was a win at Newmarket in a class 2 handicap & a 4lb rise seems fair enough, the stables going quite well too. Managed to nab some 2's but ones come out since & there would be a rule 4. Bets Miss Macnamara 6/1 Secret Hint 2/1 10pts on each & a 5pt double, Paddy Power BOG Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary So the end of an hectic four days & time to reflect a little. Punting wise it was dreadful but I'm not too concerned at this point because the flats not really got going yet & the losses are minimal. I've seen one or two that I'd want to be with & a few more that I'd want to be against in the near future. Things hot up now with the Guineas meeting at the weekend. Quite bright at Wetherby but as usual not so warm especially as the afternoon wore on. In Focus lands the first ever Wetherby flat race by a nose. I'm backing Dark Red in the first maiden & move in to have a few bob at 7/1 when the price changes to 13/2, two boards down & he's 7's but the girl taking the bets says she'll give me the 7/1. Then the bloke on the joint running the computer starts arguing the toss, & changes the price to 6/1, you'd think I was JP McManus stood there with a wad of notes fit to choke an elephant instead of a few quid. The price two boards down has gone, the girl says I can have 13/2, I decline, now I've gone into full on bloody minded mode, I'm not backing this unless I can get 7/1, I can't I don't. Heading to the last furlong & it looks like Dark Red might win but at the line he's still a half length down on Great Fun who makes all. Great Fun, yer right, it used to be great fun ducking & diving in the betting ring trying to get the best price, not any more. They're not bookies now they're exchange players, glorified accountants with no spine, I doubt most of them could run a book without the exchanges in front of them, I'd stick the lot of them against a wall & machine gun them. The Hamdan filly Wardat Dubai goes off at 5/6 & is a one paced 3rd, I wouldn't back this one to beat a three legged stool. Rant over. The best looking one for division two is the jolly Micky Haller but I'm not playing at evens, in fact I don't play at all again. the bin Suroor runner Fly With Emirates looks like he needs the run to me & is on the slide. Mount Tahan makes all, Micky Haller is only 3rd but Fly With Emirates finishes well after getting outpaced early in the straight & will be far better for the run, however he won't be 7/1 NTO I expect. Miss Macnamara is held up but not too far back in the 1m 5f handicap, however early in the straight it's clear is isn't getting involved & can only manage a disappointing 7th. I can't have Awjab for the third maiden or the filly Persiflage who's backed into 10/11. Aussie Berry looks alright & we head for the ring where I strike a bet at 5/1. Re: Rio's Racing Diary The Pontefract card rather cut up yesterday & with the weather not too clever either it was easy to say no. I was half tempted to have a run up to Redcar today, it's the usual pretty dire stuff but there are a few things that interest me. There's a 2yo seller sandwiched between two maidens to kick off but there's two non runners in the opener making the likely winner too skinny & an odds on jolly in the seller. The impressive Beverley winner Bow and Arrow turns out under a penalty in the class 4 handicap but he's around 4/6 to follow up. Add a claimer & you can see why it's low level stuff with four class 6's on the card & the threat of wind & rain also tempers enthusiasm for a day out. The real interest is Thankstomonty in the 3.55. On reflection it wasn't a bad run at Beverley last week only finding one a half length too good & with that run likely to have put an edge on him he's worth another go off the same mark here. Nothing wrong with the ride from Sam James last week but Danny Tudhope takes over which is a plus, he'll go on the ground which is good to firm, good in places & there are showers forecast which should they be of any substance & the going eases then that shouldn't be a problem either. The drop back a furlong doesn't look an obvious move but it's quite a long straight at Redcar & I expect to see him play his cards quite early in an effort to stretch these. Triple Dip made most to get off the mark at Bath & ought to be up there as well under a pen but then I never know how Johnston's are going to run these days & she could just as easily be held up. Glorious Dancer won a bit of a nothing race at Chelmsford & is up 3lb & in trip. The two that look the biggest dangers are Sir Lancelott & Loom of Life. Sir Lancelott had Loom of Life just under 4l's behind when winning a Newcastle class 6 LTO & is stuck up 8lb for that while Loom of Life is off the same mark so should get closer at least. That's not the greatest bit of form although the runner up has won since & this looks a better race, I'm thinking that with the expected improvement for his return Thankstomonty can get off the mark. Bet Thankstomonty 30pts @ 11/4 Skybet BOG Sheriff of Nawton is looking like an intended runner in the appretice handicap that opens Doncasters Saturday evening meeting & I have asked for a badge. This looks like the most probable destination Saturday anyway as it would not be practical to get from Thirsk to Town Moor in time. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary Yet another disappointing effort from a fancied one in Thankstomonty at Redcar on Thursday, well backed but only 4th. That's now eight singles since the last winner, not an unusual sequence but I rather think the circumstances are. I used to feel I could read the market quite well, I still do but perhaps not as well as I used to however a look at those last eight bets shows... 3/1 from 11/2, unplaced 6/4 from 11/4, 3rd 5/4 from 5/2, unplaced 5/2 from 11/4, unplaced 3/1 from 10/3 unplaced 5/1 from 6/1, unplaced 6/5 from 2/1 2nd 6/4 from 11/4 unplaced Every one goes off at an SP shorter than the price I've taken & six of them can't even make the frame never mind win! I feel I'm doing little wrong but need a change of luck, perhaps today although I feel I may have missed one boat already but looking at theose results again perhaps not but I'm getting ahead of myself. Singles etc W/R 4-25 Stakes 383pts Returns 342.5pts Profit/Loss -40.5pts Multiple bets Stakes 137pts Returns 77pts Profit/Loss -60pts Exacta/Trifecta -£4.80 The not sure what to call it but if it cops I’ll be on a beach somewhere with a cold drink in one hand & a hot blonde in the other bet Stakes 50pts Returns 33.09pts Profit/Loss -16.91pts Expenses £540 Doncaster this evening with Mowgli. Sheriff of Nawton runs in the first & I have a badge :rollin The plan is to call for a late lunch somewhere, arrive at Donny for around 3.30 & take in the 2000 Guineas. The pre race thoughts are should he handle the faster ground then he would have a good chance, they think the main danger would be the unexposed Comedy King from Luca Cumani's. However should this one win then I suspect not only myself but Mowgli will be rather less than impressed. The reason for that is we both backed him at Pontefract in June last year where he went off at 13/8f & ran an absolute shocker, never went a yard, stunk the place out. It was so bad that the stench even roused the stewards from their after lunch slumbers to have a word, no Cumani there of course but rather than the stock "No explanation" usually trotted out Luca's rep reported that the horse was "Unsuited by the going" which was good, good to firm in places. After that Comedy King rather surprisingly went to Sandown where he was sixth of seven on ground which was good to firm. Tonight's ground is good to firm with a going stick reading of 9.4, it's been watered, 5 to 7mm's on the round course on Thursday but why should Comedy King act on this going? The main difference to him from last season is he's had the dangly bits lopped off, I may be wrong but does losing your nuts mean that you can now run on ground which your not supposed to like? If the betting is anything to go on yes. I backed the Sheriff last evening when both he & Comedy King were 10/3jtf's, as I write this I can back the Sheriff at 11/2 & Comedy King is a general 13/8 & as short as 6/4 in places & there are no non runners. Having said I like to think I can read the market how wrong have I got this? I have the feeling that come 5.15ish this evening I am not going to be a happy chappie. There are some 2yo's to look at at 6.15. Only two have run, Secret Ambition clocked a fair 64 in finishing a five & three parts 5th on his debut at Redcar & should improve for that, that man Johnston trains :unsure Mr Morse was well held on his run at Musselburgh but it was a class 3 & on soft ground, he got a speed number of 20 for that. As usual I'll need a look at them before perhaps striking a bet. My main hope for the evening is Gothic Empire in the 6.45. I saw this one make his debut over C&D on the Sunday of the Lincoln meeting where he looked quite a nice sort & went off 3/1f in what looked a quite warm maiden. He moved up nicely on the bit heading to the last furlong but just couldn't quicken when asked & was 4th beaten about a length & a half. Since then he's dotted up at Wolves when 4/11 which is not great form but you can only beat what's put in front of you. He may have just needed that first start & I'm hoping he proves a bit better than the 85 he's been given for this handicap debut. Auspicion got off the mark at Ripon a couple of weeks ago but I didn't see the race live having already left, looking at it again he made a little bit of hard work of it in the end but should be another that improves for the run & he was quite highly tried at 2yo's running both times at Ascot. Strong Chemistry is the other to fear. Having won a Kempton maiden on his second start last year he was lobbed into a Group 3 at Newmarket where he wasn't disgraced in 4th beaten just over 3l's. He then returned in the same class as tonight when a half length 2nd to Desert Force at Newbury for which he's been stuck up 9lbs which strikes me as a bit harsh. At the moment I seem to have read the market better here having had the 11/4 last evening with Gothic Empire now 9/4. Now comes the bit where I thought I'd missed the boat only I haven't. At the Lincoln meeting I backed Desert Law who ran quite well & at the time I said he would pop up at a price somewhere. He then ran at Beverley when I was there but was drawn on the wrong side of the track & finished midfield but not beaten too far. I thought he'd have a chance in the 7.15 & last evening he was a general 14/1 with just Ladbrokes going 16's but they are not BOG until 9am so I left it until this morning. Just after 9am I log onto oddschecker to see that the price as gone off a cliff & he's 6/1, & as short as 4/1 with some firms. I've just looked again & he's now a non runner, according to oddschecker he's come out at 9.36am, on the BHA site it's down as 9.12am with a self cert for a pulled muscle. I've highlighted this rule 4 scam before but this is the worse example of thievery that I have yet come across, this horse was a general 14/1 shot which just brings it into the 5p deduction band, it's been slashed by all firms & anybody who's backed the winner of this race last evening or early this morning is going to get stiffed for 10p, 15p or in some cases 20p in the pound from their winnings & nobody wants to do anything about it. During the Winter of 13/14 the bookies were screaming about the non runners in small fields on the all weather distorting the rule 4 in punters favour, it was all over the Racing Post at the time but not a bloody peep about this one, it wants stopping but how to do it? Back to the racing & not the fiddling. Having run the rule over the Guineas I had it down to the O'Brien pair Gleneagles & Ol' Man River with Elm Park a possible too. I decided to dutch all three but now Elm Park has defected because of the ground I presume. The demoted win of Gleneagles in France is the stand out bit of form for me & he looks like a typical Ballydoyle Guineas horse. Ol' Man River is two from two & could be owt, he looks more of a Derby sort actually & it may be that he does an Australia & runs well here before taking the Derby. However he may also be a Camelot who won this & then at Epsom, at the prices I've taken I'm on at around 2/1 the pair coupled. Bets Sheriff of Nawton 10pts @ 10/3 Bet365 Gothic Empire 30pts @ 11/4 Bet365 Gleneagles 22.25pts @ 7/2 Paddy Power Ol' Man River 11.15pts @ 8/1 Ladbrokes, all BOG Right where's the box with the owners head? Re: Rio's Racing Diary We arrive at Doncaster & it's grey & gloomy, there's rain in the air & it's non too warm either. In we go & we head under the main stand where it's warm & there are telly's aplenty so we can watch the 2000 Guineas. The betting shows Gleneagles on the drift, Territories & Ol' Man River being backed. Mowgli's backed something but I can't remember what & he's on the phone & gets a bit of the 9/2 on Gleneagles before he hardens again to the 4/1 SP. Away they go & they split into two groups, Gleneagles is in the middle of the nearside bunch while Ol' Man River is at the back of the lot in the centre of the track. Ol' Man River is never anywhere other than at the back of that group & tails off tamely which prompts the stewards to have a word....

The Stewards considered the running of OL’MAN RIVER (IRE), ridden by Joseph O’Brien and trained by Aidan O’Brien, which finished tailed off. They noted the trainer’s representative could offer no explanation for the colt’s performance. The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the colt during routine testing failed to reveal any abnormalities.
While he's tailing off Gleneagles makes his move heading to the final furlong & quickly puts daylight between himself & the rest, Territories runs on well for 2nd without looking like he might get to Gleneagles while Ivawood is the first of those to race down the centre home in 3rd. Losing run snapped & the BOG gives me an extra half a point on the 4/1 SP. We have about an hour before the first race so Mowgli gets his head in the paper. He doesn't fancy Comedy King or the Sheriff & goes for a couple of longshots. In to the parade ring, there's nobody here from the stable. Out comes Josh Doyle who tells us that David O'Meara is at Newmarket & will be here later with Danny Tudhope who's on Rex Imperator in the sprint handicap. The plan is to ride the same race as when he won here at two furlong's shorter on Lincoln day, hold up & try to challenge from a couple of furlongs out. Away they go & there isn't a lot of pace on, round the bend into the straight at about four out & suddenly several of them are like Bambi on ice with the drizzle making the bend slippy. Two jocks end up on the floor, Josh & the Sheriff avoid the trouble & set off down the straight after the leader Merchant of Dubai. Comedy King gets to the leader at the two pole but then the Sheriff sweeps past him & takes it up, into the last furlong & Josh is looking around so much he might screw his head off. He's dossing a bit at the end but isn't getting caught & scores by a length & a quarter. Into the winners, up for the prizes & off for a glass of bubbly, a few hours earlier & I'm thinking doom & gloom, it's gloomy alright but no doom, two winners already & the BOG on this one gives me 9/2 for the SP as well. Back out to find Mowgli who's backed Wordiness in the next but is having a chunter because the top one is a late withdrawal & he's going to get rule 4'd if he wins. He doesn't, they all give Paul Pickard on Samtu a soft lead & halfway down the straight when it seems they might close he pulls away again to beat Wordiness by 6l's with the same back to the 3rd. More chuntering, this time about the jockey's giving the winner too much rope. Birchwood is 11/8 when we pass the boards on the way to the pre parade to view the 2yo's. He's the pick for me but when we get back he's 11/10 & then goes 10/11 & it's a no play here. Mowgli backs the David Evans pair & they are a well beaten 4th & 5th of the six. Birchwood & the Johnston runner Secret Ambition who's had a run settle down to slug it out heading to the last furlong, they're both a bit green but Birchwood gets on top in the last 100 yards to score by three parts. What's already a good night could be a great one if Gothic Empire can land the feature race up next. Mowgli backs Strong Chemistry & then sticks his head back in the Post & says he likes the York form of Realtra behind Tiggy Wiggy last season & a few quid at a price might be in order. Both Jockeys on Strong Chemistry & Gothic Empire are hard at it from a long way out & it's clear they aren't winning. Misterioso has been well backed & looks like he is going to win when the Middleham Park colours mow him down close home, it's Realtra at 14/1. Mowgli looks a bit miffed, I ask him if he's backed it but I think I know the answer, nope. It's getting seriously nippy now so we go back inside where we decide to have a poke at the sprint handicap & then bale out. Mowgli takes Sunraider & I plump for Whozthecat. Whozthecat breaks well & leads which is what I'd expected but heading to two out it's clear he's getting swamped. Sunraider is poorly away & never looks like getting invovled. Rex Imperator is dreadful & ends up walking home, time to go. I was half expecting a rule 4 from Elm Park from the Guineas but no so 111.25pts there & the 55pts from the Sheriff for 166.25pts from the 73.4pts staked. Beverley race tomorrow with the ridiculously early start of 12.30, I need a good look later but would want a better day weather wise to make the effort. Should I not land there then the Ripon evening meeting on Friday would probably be the next port of call. The bad light makes the pictures a bit grainy. Josh & the Sheriff in the winners. Re: Rio's Racing Diary A text from Mowgli last evening informs me he's backed four at Beverley & is up for going & taking the family so a look at the card to pick some for a lucky 15 & I'm tagging along. The first race is a six runner 3yo fillies maiden where John Gosden's Stubbins would look hard to beat after her good return at Newbury 17 days ago. However she's odds on & not my sort of bet. The 2yo maiden up after that would hold more promise of a punt. Of those that have run the filly Majestic Bond clocked a decent number with an 85 on her debut at Redcar only giving in quite late in the piece, assuming she runs to that or indeed improves for the run then it's going to take a smart effort from one of the others to win this. Baby Ballerina is next on the figures with a 42 on soft at Musselburgh & King's Mimic was given only 36 for the 3rd on debut here when quite well backed so it would look more likely that a newcomer would be the main threat. The obvious pair are Kirkham from Fahey's & Ferryover from Ryan's but a look is needed as usual. The 1.35 I have down to Stanghow & Soie D'Leau Stanghow was a close 2nd on his return just six days ago at Newcastle & must go well off the same mark, while the recent rain has eased the ground a little I feel this one needs more cut though & I'm going with Soie D'Leau here. He also ran well at that Newcastle meeting being just held by a decent looking sort when the ground was a bit faster than Stanghow ran on later at the meeting after plenty of rain. He goes off the same mark here & ought to give me a run for the money. 2.10 Toto Skyllachy is an old favourite of mine & has won here four times but all at 8.5f's & he's getting on a bit now. Where's Tiger keeps finding at least one too good but did win his only race to date here at this trip in fair style last August but he's 10lb higher here in a bit better affair. A short head separated Next Stop & Bling King over C&D 11 days ago & on the revised terms they ought to be bang together again, that day Next Stop got first run & Bling King was hauling him in at the death, a better passage today might see places reversed & I'll take him. 2.45 I know Mowgli's on Rousayan who was denied in a head bobber at Wetherby last Sunday & I was taking him on with Ice Slice but now he's come out due to the ground being too fast. Dark Ocean is non too consistent & the one to give him most to do now could be Jacbequick who won three here last season but all at a furlong shorter & on the three goes at 8f+ so far he's failed to get home. 3.10 Eeny Mac is another that likes it here having won five times at the track, new stable today & usually needs a run or two these days. Echo of Lightning rather let me down at Thirsk on his return so I'm letting him pass here, did win second time out last season though so likely to dot up. Sakalin Star is another who scored on his second run last season & ran into a bit of traffic on his comeback this time. Down to a winning mark here & the trip is fine. Bet Soie D'Leau 5/1 Bling King 7/2 Ice Slice N/R Sakalin Star 10/3 1pt lucky 15 Betvictor BOG Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary Been somewhat under the weather & still feeling naff so to the point. No bet in the first at Beverley Monday but Mowgli had the winner The Tempest who held the jolly by a short head. I didn't think I was playing in the 2yo maiden either where I wanted Majestic Bond if I could get 3's but it didn't look likely until one board went the price with most of the field loaded & I nipped in for a bet. Broke well, led but headed a furlong out & was 3rd. Mrs Mowgli had the winner King's Mimic who improved from the debut 36 to clock a 66 here. In the sprint handicap Soie D'Leau broke well, took it up & was all over the winner until Stanghow nipped by on his inside in the shadow of the post. Mowgli was telling me "He's won this" in the last furlong & he wasn't the only one I suspect as Soie D'Leau was as short as 1.34 in running. If that was a near miss then Bing King was the opposite, drifted in the betting & as the form line says was "Never a factor" A short head behind the 2nd in this Next Stop here LTO & 7l's adrift here on a pound better terms, mind you that one was 6l's behind the winner Libran who had the stewards asking questions....

The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, LIBRAN (IRE), ridden by B A Curtis and trained by Alan Swinbank, compared with its previous run at Redcar on 13 April 2015, where the gelding finished ninth of twelve, beaten by 16 ½ lengths. They noted the explanation of the trainer’s representative that the gelding was suited by being ridden more prominently on this occasion. They ordered LIBRAN (IRE) to be routine tested.
What about asking why Bling King drifted & never went a yard? Not happy. Mowgli was on Rousayan in the next where mine had come out, I couldn't see it getting beat now but resisted the 7/4. He won but boy was it close, two lengths clear at the one pole & held on from Border Bandit by just a head. I nearly fell over when I saw Sakhalin Star at 5/1 on the boards, this called for a bet at that price. The Mowgli's both decided he was the one as well so none of us were right happy when he comes 3rd beaten just over a length having been held up & getting blocked when making his run several times. Now what did I put pre race?
Echo of Lightning rather let me down at Thirsk on his return so I'm letting him pass here, did win second time out last season though so likely to dot up.
While he hardly dotted up he did win at 11/2, this follows on from the 2yo Millennium Falcon who I'd backed at Ripon on debut but was never in it winning at Thirsk on Saturday at 5/2 & then I also note on Wednesday that Pinzolo who'd stunk the place out when also backed at Ripon lands a race worth the best part of £13k to the winner at Chelmsford at 3/1. The non runner returns a point. Singles etc W/R 6-29 Stakes 456.4pts Returns 508.75pts Profit/Loss +52.35pts Multiple bets Stakes 152pts Returns 78pts Profit/Loss -74pts Exacta/Trifecta -£4.80 The not sure what to call it but if it cops I’ll be on a beach somewhere with a cold drink in one hand & a hot blonde in the other bet Stakes 50pts Returns 33.09pts Profit/Loss -16.91pts Expenses £550 I had intended going to Ripon this evening but with the head banging, the nose blocked & heavy rain forecast I shall decline even with the club horse Scrutiny running in the seller there. There's nothing on the website as to his chances as yet but he does have some cut in ground that he's supposed to need & should it lag it down it would suit even more, however there's not a lot of cover at Ripon & I'm not risking it. I had a text last evening from Mowgli informing me that it's reported on Twitter that Jamaica & Oklahoma City are both dead, however I can find no reports anywhere to confirm this, I'm hoping that it's not true, not for the sake of the ante post punt for the Derby on Jamaica but for the two horses. Re: Rio's Racing Diary Am I glad I didn't go to Ripon last evening. Just before the 6.30 I turn to At the Races to see Ann Duffield being interviewed in the parade ring whilst sheltering under an umbrella because it's absolutely lagging it down. The thoughts on the website when finally arriving were that he was fresh & well, might need it but could be worth an each way. Seven runners so only two places, a best price of 5/1 early but that's gone & he goes off at 11/4 in the monsoon, each way! I don't think so. The form says....

Held up in touch, ridden over 4f out, never involved (op 4/1 tchd 5/2)
4th beaten 14+ lengths. Like I say I'm glad I stayed at home. The intention was to go to Haydock today but showers are forecast there & the main reason these days for me going racing is to look at the horses, it's not to take on the spineless parasites that masquerade as bookmakers & it's certainly not to huddle inside with dozens of drunken morons whilst trying to watch the racing on the TV & avoiding getting wet through. I'm still feeling rough & I might as well stay at home in the warm & watch the racing in comfort. A pair of singles & the tilt at windmills then. It's a good card at Haydock actually, this is now I believe the only flat/jumps mixed card in the calendar with Sandown having changed their two day mixed meeting to one day flat & the second jumps. In the 1.45 The Govaness looks a most progressive type & won a Listed handicap hurdle at Cheltenham LTO in decent style at 2m 5.5f's for which she's been stuck up 13lbs. The 3m's here looks like it will suit & she goes on soft & while that's a hefty rise most of these look exposed or searching for some form. Ascot 2.00 Ascot seems to have avoided the wet stuff & the going is on the quick side. This race revolves around Penhill for me. Having got off the mark at Nottingham in a class 5 handicap last April he then ran alright upped in class at York & then won two small field handicaps at Thirsk & Ripon. After looking to be going well in the Melrose at York in August & finding nothing in the last two furlongs he was never dangerous in a pair of class 2 handicaps at Ascot & Newmarket. He's since changed hands for 230,000gns & joined Luca Cumani which for me is the sole reason for him being as short as 5/2 in an 11 runner handicap, he's still 3lbs higher than the Ripon win & wants taking on here for me. I'll have Forgotten Hero who is a course winner at 10f's & a distance winner at Doncaster at a class above this, the run at Epsom on his return should have him spot on for this. Haydock 2.15 I'll have another go at Storm Rock who drops back to a mile here having looked to have not seen out the extended 10f's at Donny on his return in March. Quite impressive when scoring at York last backend at this trip, the doubt is the faster ground but no reason why it shouldn't suit. Amazing Maria makes her debut for O'Meara in the 3.10 at Ascot. She won twice at Goodwood at 2yo's the second of those being a Group 3. She was a sick horse apparently last Spring & didn't return until chucked in the deep end in the Oaks where she was tailed off. No better at Deauville on heavy in August when dropped back to a mile & only fair at 7f's at Doncaster when last seen in September. If the move from Ed Dunlop & a good break has her anywhere near the Goodwood form she can give them all weight in this mile handicap & I'm having a single on her to do so. Haydock 3.25 Handiwork was doing his best work late on in the Scottish Champion hurdle LTO & is better off at the weights with the winner here, the slower ground will suit him as well & he's worth putting in here. Ascot 3.45 Zarwaan was a good 5th in the Britannia here last season & also ran well in the Lincoln on his return, the drop back to 7f's & the faster ground should suit & i'll take him in this. Haydock 4.00 That is the Spirit is expected to improve again this season & should be sharper for the run in Ireland three weeks ago. Down in class here & will handle the under foot conditions. Aeolus may find this 7f's stretching him & the big danger could be stablemate Penitent who likes the ground & ran well FTO but it was probably too quick for him a Leicester LTO. Re: Rio's Racing Diary Well that turned out better than it was looking at one point. Things started reasonably well with The Govaness getting 3rd in the Haydock opener, having said that Paddy Brennan held her up right out the back & gave her quite a bit to do. I'm not saying had he raced nearer the pace she'd have won but she was running on at the death & would certainly have been closer. Not that it mattered because the wheels soon come off that bet. Down at Ascot & Forgotten Hero manages to beat one of the now nine runners home. This is the race with the well backed Penhill making his debut for Cumani & with three non runners he goes off at 13/8, he wins but only just, another stride or two & he's caught. Haydock's 2.15 also has three non runners leaving five so just two places now. Storm Rock manages to find trouble in running in a field of five, gets shuffled back to last at just the wrong time & then finishes well to get beat for 2nd by a short head :eyes Still if I'm unhappy imagine how connections of Wedding Vow in the Oaks trial & Christophermarlowe in the Derby trial down at Lingfield are feeling after they can both manage a pair of well beaten 3rds at 8/11 & 2/5 respectively. More classic bubbles go pop but having said that the Coolmore crew can afford it & still have plenty of ammo to fire. On that point I can still find no info on the demise or not of Jamaica but note that he's no longer quoted for the Derby by any of the major bookmakers so it doesn't look good. Amazing Maria runs a good race in Ascot's 3.10, heading to two out & she seems to be going well & then gets in a battle with Solar Magic which she loses by a neck but Temptress scoots up the nearside & beats the pair of them in some style & she could be a bit useful. Having had a run for the money there the exact opposite now happens with Handiwork in the Swinton. The tape goes up & straight away Nico de Boinville is doing a passable impression of Sir Steve Redgrave, he's right at the back of the field & never travels for Nico at all. To be fair to him he never stops trying but he never looks like getting involved & comes a remote 9th of the 12 to get round. This means Zarwaan is a dead rubber in the Victoria Cup so I'm thinking that he's likely to hose up & heading to two furlongs out he's making a good looking move in an effort to really brass me off. However he then downs tools just as quickly & Speculative Bid bursts through from the back to win. This ones in a class 3 handicap at Doncaster tomorrow with a 6lb pen, if he turns up there what price will he be? That's C4 done so I head to the laptop for a spot of live streaming & Haydock's 4.00. Bravo Zolo is a non runner & That is the Spirit & Aeolus go off 9/4jf's. Graham Gibbons bounces out into a clear lead on That is the Spirit & is still a good three lengths up heading to the three pole. Their all at it behind him but the only one that closes is Dusky Queen who gets to about half a length a furlong out "You can't get beat by that one" I cry & That is the Spirit decides I'm right & pulls away again to score by a length & three parts. He's barely over the line when my phone dings, Mowgli's happy because he's on too & has already had No Planning at Haydock earlier. I know from the text he sent me the night before that he's on New Providence in the 4.05 at Lingfield so it's straight back to the box for At the Races & when she gets a gap & moves through heading to the final furlong it seems he's on a roll but she can't get past Majestic Queen & is 2nd. He's also backed Sakhalin Star in the last race at Thirsk's evening meeting, this is the one that didn't get the gaps at Beverley on Monday for us & his Mrs. I'd looked at the race & decided that 7/2 about a hold up sort in a field of 16 at Thirsk was not very attractive. In the end there were another three that didn't run here & having tracked the leaders at 5/2f he took it up two out but got chased down by the 16/1 shot Mercers Row, 2nd again. My last chance of a place double with Gabbiano in Ascot's closer bit the dust when he can only finish 7th. Re: Rio's Racing Diary This will have to be quick because I'm off to Donny with Mowgli & time is short. He's got all week off so he's keen to get plenty of racing in however he's at a wedding on Thursday so he's going to miss Dante day, fancy arranging a wedding for 1pm on a Thursday when the racing's on at York, how thoughtless of them :p A single & a trixie plus singles for today. 2.30 Grand Liaison returned to John Berry & winning ways at Wolverhampton LTO, goes with cut but needs a career best off 68. Arsenale won a bit of a nothing handicap when well backed LTO having not shown a lot before that, returns to turf off 5lb higher & is unexposed but needs a bit morte yet. Heavenly River is still a maiden but ran on quite well if some way behind Sheriff of Nawton at the Lincoln meeting at this trip & is off the same mark here, still only a 4yo so could find more yet, goes on the ground & sharper for that run, she's the pick here. There are then two divisions of a mile maiden & in the first I'll be looking to take on the jolly Alkawn who ran well FTO on soft at Nottingham but then got turned over at 1/3 on the aw at Wolves. That might have been the surface & back on soft turf he could well win but it wouldn't take much from one of the newcomers to turn him over again. There's another Hamdan hot pot in the second division Mustaaqeem who was a close 2nd in the Wood Ditton, most of these have had a run & it looks between him & Druids Ridge who was also runner up on his sole start at Newbury, I'll need a look at these before deciding to play or not. 4.25 The Victoria Cup winner Speculative Bid defected last evening, at least from the bookies prices & the jolly is Shared Equity who came out of the Ascot race to wait for the ground here I expect. Ought to go well having been a close 3rd off 2lb less here at 6f's on his return, however I feel he may just find this 7f's stretching him although he did win a race at Newcastle at this distance but this is a better race. King Torus was backed like defeat was impossible at Ripon LTO but again found trouble in running having also had traffic problems in the Spring Cup here FTO. No doubts he's well handicapped on his old form & he's a C&D winner who goes on most ground so I'll give him one last go here in the hope he gets a run this time. 5.00 I saw Mulaaseq win here again at the Lincoln meeting despite being greener than the grass, should progress but he's hardly chucked in off 80 for me & I'm taking him on with a similar sort in Master of Irony. He dwelt, ran wide into the straight but still won on his sole start at Lingfield in December & the runner up won after. Nicely bred & should like the ground, he's the pick. 5.30 I've gone with Normandy Knight here, the 3rd at Newmarket on his second start is quite decent & then he was tried in better class than twice after & not disgraced. Step up to 7f''s should suit & he's lost the dangly bits over the Winter so let's hope that does the trick. Since I backed him late last evening the price of Pressure has dropped off a cliff, he's got a similar sort profile to the selection & ran ok FTO on fast ground at Leicester but I can't really see why he should be as short as 6/4 now. Bets King Torus 15pts @ 6/1 Betfair Sportsbook Heavenly River 6/1 Master of Irony 3/1 Normandy Knight 4/1 1pt trixie plus 3 x 2pt singles = 10pts staked Paddy Power All BOG Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary Beverley today & time is slipping by. Having run into Graham yesterday he tells us that Heavenly River is expected to run well, we've both backed her so that's a good sign. Somebody failed to tell the horse she was supposed to run well because she was dreadful, always in rear, 10th of 11 beaten 24l's, stewards? :zzz It gets better when we both take on Alkawn with the Noseda newcomer Keystroke in the first division of the maiden & he wins by a neck despite running green at 5/1. The second division looks between Mustaaqeem & Druids Ridge, the latter looks the part & at one time I would have backed him but not at 6/4. Good job because he's only 4th. Mustaaqeem wins quite cheekily for me, Fanshawe's Arthenus finishes well for 3rd & will win a race. Mowgli's backed King Torus & Twin Appeal & has a top up on track, both have drifted a fair chunk. King Torus gets squeezed for room & runs on for 4th beaten just over 2l's but he's never winning. Twin Appeal hits the front at the two pole & keeps on well to win. We both like Master of Irony & he looks well so we both have a top up. He's a bit slow away again but soon gets up to the middle of the pack. Two out & he looks like he's getting involved & runs on ok for 2nd but has no chance with Critical Risk who wins well & could be a big improver. Mowgli's not backed anything in the next, sticks his nose in the Post & comes up with Normandy Knight. He's bang there at two out but plods on for 4th & we won't be backing him again. The gambled on Pressure is soon under pressure & is another place back, the stewards have woken up now...

The Stewards considered the running of PRESSURE, ridden by Adam Kirby and trained by Clive Cox, which started favourite and finished sixth. They noted the trainer's representative could offer no explanation for the gelding’s performance. The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of PRESSURE doing routine testing failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Back to sleep chaps. Mowgli's backed Three Graces in the last & is considering a top up but not at 6/4 & 13/8, I've no fancy here so we depart & are on the A1 when he gets the race on his phone & Three Graces dots up at 5/4. Nothing from the posted bets but the win on Keystroke has me just ahead. Singles etc W/R 7-32 Stakes 516.4pts Returns 608.13pts Profit/Loss +91.73pts Multiple bets Stakes 162pts Returns 78pts Profit/Loss -84pts Exacta/Trifecta -£4.80 The not sure what to call it but if it cops I’ll be on a beach somewhere with a cold drink in one hand & a hot blonde in the other bet Stakes 58pts Returns 33.09pts Profit/Loss -24.91pts Expenses £560 A couple of singles & another trixie plus today. Last week I'd backed Ice Slice here but he'd defected because of the fast ground, he's got soft, heavy in places today & is the main hope in the 3.55. He'd won a similar event to this at Newbury on soft last backend & was a good second on his return at Nottingham to the in form Yourartisonfire a month ago. Up a pound but looks the type to progress where as the rest of them look a bit exposed, Solo Hunter was out last evening & Hills were going 4/1 which was out of line to everybody else & I logged on half expecting the price to have gone but struck a bet at the price, he's now a best of 9/4, don't let me down!! The other single is Dark Red in the maiden at 4.55. I've seen him run twice & he was green as the grass at Donny on debut but stayed on quite well late. Then again he was green at Ripon but I'd gone home when again he stayed on late for another 4th. Last time at Wetherby he was just held by a Brian Meehan newcomer & if he's ever winning a race it's here. Samsonite was 3.l's behind there & I can't see why he turn that round. Thorkhill Star has had plenty of chances & hasn't do much in two handicaps this Spring. Haggas' always need a look but Director' not shown a lot in two runs. Father Bertie was a fair 3rd on his return at Thirsk & might be a danger. The one that worries me a little is Dark Red's Stablemate Ejbaar who's one run in a nothing maiden at Wolves had a bit of promise & I don't want one of Hamdan's nutting me. For the Trixie I've taken Heroique in the 2.55. I noted her as a 2yo two seasons back but she's won once from 21 goes, that was on heavy at similar Pontefract & she's placed another nine times including FTO at Redcar in April & i thought that 7/1 was a reasonable price last evening, she's now available at 12's :eyes Windforpower was a good 2nd on soft a week ago & should give me a run for the money from trap 2 in the 3.25. Multellie was a decent 3rd in a soft ground nursery at Ponty last backend & should like the step up to nearly 10f's in the 4.25 & he completes the trixie bet. There's a 2yo race at 2.25 where Graham told us yesterday that Flying Pursuit might go well but it seems that he's one of these that flies up the gallops one day & won't go a yard the next, which mood will he turn up in? Bathos tops my numbers from 7th on debut at Windsor but I dislike the trainer intensely. I'll have a look before playing or not. Bets Ice Slice 20pts @ 4/1 Hills Dark Red 25pts @ 3/1 Betfair Sportsbook Heroique 7/1 Windforpower 4/1 Multellie 7/2 1pt trixie plus 3 x 2pt singles = 10pts staked, Skybet, all BOG Time to go Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary A decent lunch in the pub in the village just before Beverley & we arrive at a sunny but windy racecourse. On the way I've told Mowgli that when I'd looked at the card the previous evening I'd decided that the opening seller was quite possibly the worse race I'd ever seen, this was until I'd got to the last race which was definitely the worse I'd ever seen. He's got his head in the Racing Post & decides it ought to be between Amber Crystal & Special Code, I agree but Amber Crystal is too short & I'm not sure that Special Code with go on the ground. We decline to bet & Special Code beats Amber Crystal easily. Having said I dislike his trainer intensely I decide that Bathos looks the one for the 2yo race, I back him & so does Mowgli who's already backed two before we arrive, then we watch him drift. He's slowly away, at the back, makes late headway for 4th & gets the annoying "Nearest finish" in the form line. He needs further, & I like his trainer even less. The other two Mowgli's backed don't win either. Mowgli's not backed anything in the next & takes Three Grand who runs well enough for 3rd. Heroique holds every chance & is not beaten far in 6th. The winner is Thatcherite who ran no race for me two runs back & scores here at 7/1. Windforpower runs alright but is a slightly disappointing 3rd in the next. Mowgli thinks he's found one at a price in Pavers Star at 14/1 but this manages 7th & then he decides he ought to have backed the winner Point North. While we were looking at these beforehand it's given out that Ice Slice isn't running in the next, the ground is drying & is now good. Mowgli backs Altharoos & Border Bandit & gets 1st & 3rd & then tells me he ought to have had more on the winner :eyes Multellie is a disappointing 3rd but not as bad as Mowgli's Multi Grain who's a poor 6th of the seven. I could do with Dark Red winning & I'm thinking I'll back him again if I can get the 3/1. I go for a look & he's foaming at the mouth a bit which I don't like & the 3's never appears. We are down by the winning post where I get a snap as he fails by a head, the form sums it up...

Tracked leaders, effort on inner when not clear run just over 1f out, ridden and squeezed through inside final furlong, finished strongly, just failed
:wall When it's not your day.... We hit the road & I've now got my nose in the Post. That rotten last race is a class 6 handicap, the top weight has had three runs, 8th of 11, 11th of 13 & 10th of 12, beaten 10, 24 & 11 lengths & that's the top rated!!! The third in the weights is rated 2lb inferior & also has had three runs, last of 6, last of 13 & last of 7, beaten 36, 19 & 15 & a half lengths & it's last again here. Mowgli sees what I mean when I say it's the worse race I've ever seen. No return but at least the Ice Slice stake is returned, he could have run, got beat & then the ground gets blamed. Singles etc W/R 7-33 Stakes 541.4pts Returns 608.13pts Profit/Loss +66.73pts Multiple bets Stakes 172pts Returns 78pts Profit/Loss -94pts Exacta/Trifecta -£4.80 The not sure what to call it but if it cops I’ll be on a beach somewhere with a cold drink in one hand & a hot blonde in the other bet Stakes 58pts Returns 33.09pts Profit/Loss -24.91pts Expenses £560 The return of racing to the Knavesmire, the usual mix of big field handicaps & some quality, although the fields for the Musidora & the 2yo race are disappointingly small. An ew lucky 15 on the handicaps & a single on one I have hopes will turn out to be top class this season, plus a little ew on one from last year. The main hope is Muthmir who impressed when winning at York last July & then I backed him in the Stewards Cup, not just to win but I had near enough 7/4 in the Betfair place only market for the first four. Nine months later I'm I'm still trying to work out how Dane O'Neil managed to finish 5th that day? Especially when he absolutely bolted up in the Portland after that having stumbled out of the stalls & found trouble in running having had to pass just about everything to win. At that point I had him down as one for this season, I'm hoping he's a July Cup winner, if he is he has to win this on the way. Six furlongs is his trip & the drying ground will suit, I know Mowgli is keen on Naadirr who beat Astaire in the Cammidge & he won after but the one I'm wary of is Lightning Moon who's a perfect three from three, but he's up in class & might need softer ground. For the multiple I'm with First Flight in the opener, he looked progressive last backend, is only a 4yo so there should be more to come this season. In the 2.40 I'll have Bogart. Runs well here usually & the ground should be perfect, winning handicap mark, nice racing weight & should be spot on after the return run at Beverley. William Haggas' always need a look at here & I'll have Foreign Diplomat in the 4.20. Ran a good race here on debut & then again at Newbury after that, turned over at odds on on the aw at Lingfield but won nicely at Thirsk FTO. Mark of 81 seems reasonable & the stables in form. Can't let Little Lady Katie go unbacked either & have had a small ew, expecting to see Frank here today. The last race can go to Libran who carries a 6lb pen but won pulling a bus at Beverley last week. Bets First Flight 9/1 Bogart 10/1 Foreign diplomat 11/2 Libran 10/1 0.5pt ew lucky 15, Hills Muthmir 20pts @ 5/1 Paddy Power Little Lady Katie 2.5pts ew @ 25/1 Bet365, all BOG I had a text from Mowgli last evening informing me that Scrutiny was running in the 3.55 at Newcastle today. There had been nothing on the website Monday but a log in last evening & not only is he he in today there is a announcement that the club is no longer taking new members or renewals. Balducci has been sold, Sheriff of Nawton tweaked his back when slipping & still winning at Doncaster & is on the easy list, the other three horses are either longer term prospects or no good (Scrutiny) & there is no room for fresh stock. Therefore it seems my days as an owner are numbered again, can't complain, plenty of badges & seven winners in just under two years for a small outlay, I'll have to look elsewhere it seems. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary Another excellent lunch in the pub that's on the road that runs parallel to the far side of the Knavesmire & then cross the track at about the 10f start & again just past the winning post, no soft in the going for me & a nice covering of grass. A wander round to check out the new champagne area & the new weighing room all finished & ready to be opened by the Duke of York a bit later. Never mind that is there a bloody toilet? Yes, well done chaps! Down to the betting ring, we'd only commented the other day how the bookies seemed to be playing fairer with the place terms these days, well cancel that thought because the first race is an 18 runner handicap & all bar two that I can see are going a 5th the odds :eyes Mowgli's backed Mahsoob in the first, he's got 100/30 & he's generally 11/4 on course, this doesn't seem his usual sort of bet. We take a spot on the rail's & away they go, he's near the back, he's still near the back turning into the straight & Hanagan's shoving away with not a lot of response it seems & we've both written him off. Meanwhile up front Master of Finance is making the best of his way home, I don't want this to win, this is the beast that chucked in a shocker at Ripon & should he prevail then I'm likely to throw the teddy so far it'll never be seen again. One's closing him down though & it's mine First Flight, then all of a sudden a bloke just down from us is shouting "Go on Paul, easy" Mahsoob motors past the lot in the last furlong & wins by a half. I don't know about easy but it was impressive, Mowgli's happy, First Flight didn't get past Master of Finance but is 3rd & I'd have taken that before so I'm happy too. Half an hour or so later & I'm not so happy, Bogart's in front at the furlong pole but there's a crowd scene in behind "Just get in the first four" he's 6th in a bunch where the distances are a head, shorthead, head, shorthead, head, bugger! Mowgli's is 4th. We are both even less chuffed after the Duke of York. We're both with Muthmir & Mowgli's also backed Naadirr. Now we don't want Muthmir to fluff the start & he doesn't, in fact he breaks so well that he finds himself in front & he's tanking along. In all his races he's either been held up or tracked the leaders, I don't want to see him blazing away up front but he is & surely he can't keep that up? He tries his best but is 5th beaten just around a length in total & I'm not happy at what's happened & neither is Mowgli but on reflection if he'd tried to take a pull & drop in & then got beat we wouldn't have been chuffed either. I wouldn't give up on him just yet & expect him to miss the break NTO. At least we got a run from that, Naadirr is always in the rear & walks home stone last of the 15.....

The Stewards considered the running of NAADIRR (IRE), ridden by Martin Harley and trained by Marco Botti, which finished unplaced. They noted the trainer’s representative could offer no explanation for the colt’s performance. The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of NAADIRR (IRE) during routine testing failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Needless to say Mowgli is not a happy chappy & the mood isn't improved by the temperature seeming to drop 10 degrees & it looks like it could lash down any second. We have a look at the Musidora fillies & then wander up to the Knavesmire stand & watch the race through the glass from inside to get warm. He thinks Star of Seville will win but has backed Pandora, I've just left this alone. Star of Seville makes all & holds on by a head from O'Brien's Together Forever, Pandora is a never threatening 3rd, Oaks winning form? Not for ne. It's improved temperature wise so a wander back to the parade ring to look for Frank because Little Lady Katie is up next. He's no where to be seen among the connections in the paddock & I assume he's not come. Little Lady Katie comes out last, is been scrubbed at the whole way & runs on late for 7th. Foreign Diplomat never looks like getting involved either & is just 9th. Mowgli's backed Intiwin who's even further back in 11th & the Wetherby winner Mount Tahan & is less than pleased when that one throws in a run that threatens to challenge Naadirr for the worst of the day, the stewards are also wanting to know what happened to this one....
The representative of Kevin Ryan, the trainer of MOUNT TAHAN (IRE), unplaced, reported that the gelding had a breathing problem. The Stewards ordered MOUNT TAHAN (IRE) to be routine tested.
Well at least it's better than the "No explanation " tripe. The 2yo race has just four runners. Johnston's has a double pen so is giving 5lb to Black Magic who won on debut at Ponty but I have the time as not up to much. The other two are getting 10lb & the jolly Dheban also failed to clock anything much when runner up at Newmarket on his debut. What's this Newcomer of Kevin Ryan's look like? Areen is rather taking & we head off to see what the price is. We both nab a bit of 4/1 as the price shortens & take up that spot on the rail where we were for the first. Ravenhoe leads under his double pen with the others tracking, Black Magic & Dheban don't pick up when asked for an effort but when Spencer asks Areen to go he does. He sweeps past Ravenhoe & runs on gun barrel straight to score rather impressively for me & to cheer the pair of us up no end. He gets an 86 for that & is clearly useful. Mowgli fancies some sweets, I fancy a bet on this Libran in the last. He's 6/1 & I'm on at 10's in the last chance saloon of the lucky 15, we wander through the betting ring, 13/2, can I get 7's? Yes I can & a bet is struck, we head to the sweet shop & I try to work out why he's backed three at around 20/1 against the field. Sweets scoffed it's down to our new lucky spot on the rail. Two of Mowgli's run quite well for a long way the other is stone last. I can't see Libran, the colours on my card are a washed out purple with darker stars "That's him with the noseband" says Mowgli as they turn in, the washed out purple is a mauve that's so light it looks nearly white, never mind that though he's swinging on the bit as they straighten up for home. He hits the front after the two & runs on well to score, I'll have that, off to collect & off home. That last win & the place for First Flight returns 19.56pts from the ew lucky 15, nothing from the 25pts on the singles but at least I have a few quid more in the wallet. Singles etc W/R 7-35 Stakes 566.4pts Returns 608.13pts Profit/Loss +41.73pts Multiple bets Stakes 187pts Returns 97.56pts Profit/Loss -89.44pts Exacta/Trifecta -£4.80 The not sure what to call it but if it cops I’ll be on a beach somewhere with a cold drink in one hand & a hot blonde in the other bet Stakes 58pts Returns 33.09pts Profit/Loss -24.91pts Expenses £570 On my own today. A single & a trixie perm rather than an ew today. 2.10 Out Do was taken out of the 6f handicap yesterday with the ground blamed (too soft?) He's in here at 5f's & needs a career best but they still won that race yesterday will Algar Lad who was in here but he's now out, I don't know if I'm seeing a plot here or what but he's one poke at this race. The other is Desert Law. This is the one that I was thinking of backing at Donny's evening meeting 12 days ago that came out & caused all the rule 4 fuss, supposed to have pulled a muscle, he's got over that quick then, Carlos Kickaball would be out six weeks minimum in the premier league. 2.40 Ribbons & Secret Gesture have smart form but have been off a while & I'll take Bragging as a banker in the perm. Stayed on well to win a Newmarket Group 3 on her return & she should get this easy 10f's with plenty of stamina on the dam's side, just the sort that Stoute gets more out of. Dante This might just be the best Dante field I've seen on paper. Elm Park has to run here, even if it's drying out, smart form last backend & the Racing Post Trophy win was impressive & fast ground didn't stop him beating Nafaqa in the Royal Lodge before that. Gosden's pair Golden Horn & Jack Hobbs are similar in that they have both impressed wining minor events & need to step up here, I prefer Jack Hobbs. John F Kennedy flopped in the mud on his return & must be better than that, he needs to be to win this I think. Ol' Man River also blobbed in the Guineas, it wouldn't surprise me if this one bounced back here & I'm half tempted to have a little bit on him but want to have a look at them first. Nafaqa was 2nd in the Craven & needs the step up in trip to bring a big improvement in him & the other two don't look up to this. I've gone with Jack Hobbs but I'm hoping this is a special race. Balducci runs for his new owners in the 3,45 but I've gone with O'Meara's other runner Fort Bastion here. 2nd in this off a pound less last year & got no run in the Thirsk Hunt Cup on return. The other stab lands on Homage who won quite tidily over C&D last October & the 5lb rise seems fair enough. Take Tendu out of the 4.20 & it's 7/1 the field in a 10 runner event, should she be odds on & can I find one to beat her? Probably not & no, pass. Only two of the 2yo's have run. Tawakkol hasn't busted the clock in two goes & is a swerve, the 60 for Seastrom at Nottingham is reasonable but there are 10 making their debuts & I'm really looking forward to a look at these. There's one of those Sir Mark Prescott "Won five out of six since bunged up in trip" sorts in the last & he's off the same mark as when winning an apprentice race at Ascot last week, can I find one to beat it? Not yet & two have defected making it three places so even if I could find a parasite that's going a quarter the each way angle is less appealing. Bets Out Do 9/1 Bragging 7/4 Fort Bastion 7/1 1pt trixie Desert Law 8/1 Bragging 7/4 Homage 10/1 1pt trixie 2pt singles on each at the prices, 4pts on Bragging at 2/1, various firms, all BOG Jack Hobbs 25pts @ 3/1 Skybet BOG Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary 14th of May on the Knavesmire & it feels like the 14th of January, absolutely perishing. Things start well when Out Do wins the 5f handicap, causing a bit of a fuss, it seems that having been taken out the day before because of the ground he's run here on the same ground only he hasn't because when he was declared for Wednesday the ground was good to soft. Is it a plot? Who cares I'm off & running, Desert Law runs well for 3rd too. It doesn't last long, Bragging seems to travel well in 3rd & Secret Gesture looks to be doing too much in front but she keeps going to score while when asked for an effort early in the straight Bragging does a fair impression of a geriatric running for a bus....

No Stewards Enquiry. Ryan Moore, the rider of BRAGGING (USA), placed sixth, reported that the filly lost its action in the closing stages. The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of BRAGGING (USA) during routine testing failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Closing stages! Since when as over three furlongs out been the closing stages? Having viewed the runners for the Dante I decide I better have a small bet on Ol' Man River at 11/1, he looks the the better of the two O'Brien runners to me. He does best of the two O'Brien runners in the race in managing to finish 6th of the seven while JFK is eased right down & walks home after losing his place in a few strides about a furlong out....
No Stewards Enquiry. The Stewards considered the running of JOHN F KENNEDY (IRE), ridden by Ryan Moore and trained by Aidan O’Brien, which finished unplaced. They noted the trainer could offer no explanation for the colt’s performance. The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of JOHN F KENNEDY (IRE) during routine testing failed to reveal any abnormalities.
I thought Gosden might win this & he does, unfortunately I'm on the wrong one. Jack Hobbs is looking at the crowd, lugs in behind Elm Park when Dettori asks him to go past the leader, his heads to one side & he gets a bump as well. In the end he does well to get past Elm Park but Golden Horn sails by to win pretty easily really. If Jack Hobbs is looking at us lot in this what's he going to do at Epsom? Blinkers on perhaps? If Fort Bastion can win the next I'll still have a nice double up with two singles, if Homage wins just the two singles. They both drop in from fairly wide draws & up the straight Fort Bastion tries his best but doesn't get the best of runs & is 5th, he wouldn't have won anyway for me. Homage never looks like getting in the race & is a poor 14th. This doesn't seem to bother Mr Haggas who I've seen a few times over the two days walking around with a smile on his face like he hasn't a care in the world, he's had five well fancied runners so far this week & not one has hit the frame never mind won, what's he gong to do if one wins? I've had a look to see if I can find one to beat Tendu in the next & can't. One does, the 14/1 shot Profitable & I wouldn't have had him. While this is on I'm down at the nearly deserted pre parade looking at the 2yo's. Blue Humor looks rather nice for Kevin Ryan & Seastrom who's had a run & is my top rated from the pair that have run & also looks the part. I watch the Tendu/Profitable race from down by the parade ring & then wander up to the betting ring, which one? In the end I split the stake & back both at 5/1 & 13/2. I watch this from the rail, Blue Humor runs quite well but is green & fades to 6th late on. Seastrom is trying to make all, Tawakkol is the other with a run & not much in the way of a number & he's handled by my least favourite trainer & he's looking like catching Seastrom heading to the line. "You can't get beat by that" I implore. Seastrom obliges by sticking his neck out & holding on. I'll have that, first in the queue & paid out & then I'm heading off to grab a picture when I see the SP, 3/1f, I've had 5's :eek Blimey I think there's more than me that'll be happy. I'm not backing this one of Prescott's in the last & not fielding against it either, it's looking a bit grim overhead & it wouldn't be the first time I've got wet heading back to the car. I'm still coughing & spluttering & I'm frozen stiff so the prospect of getting soaked is not appealing, I head for the hills. The Prescott runner is 2nd at 15/8f while I have the heater full on in the car. A 10p rule 4 for the Out Do race means I get 18.2pts back from the 20pts staked, nothing from the single. Singles etc W/R 7-36 Stakes 591.4pts Returns 608.13pts Profit/Loss +16.73pts Multiple bets Stakes 207pts Returns 115.76pts Profit/Loss -91.24pts Exacta/Trifecta -£4.80 The not sure what to call it but if it cops I’ll be on a beach somewhere with a cold drink in one hand & a hot blonde in the other bet Stakes 58pts Returns 33.09pts Profit/Loss -24.91pts Expenses £580 Mowgli's back today, let's hope he brings some warmth with him. Two singles, one at Hamilton this evening & an ew lucky 15 in the handicaps. 2.10 I've not had a bet in this as yet, a Listed contest for 2yo fillies where all bar White Bullet have had at least one run so some speed numbers & form to go on. Lil's Joy clocked a 68 on debut at Chelmsford & then 96 when a half length runner up to a Fahey favourite at Nottingham on good to soft a week ago, this has her top rated here. Deliza is next best with an 88 from her sole run at Wolves but she'd have to scream back me when I look at them from this yard. Sadie Babies clocked an 83 at Musselburgh on fast ground & Fahey's are always worth a look. Silk Bow stepped up a ton on a nothing debut at Donny to post a 79 at Chelmsford when winning. French is that great big filly that was playing up, ran green, met trouble & still won well at Ripon when I was there for which she gets 75. The rest have clocked nothing special but it doesn't mean they can't of course, a good look is required here before any bet. Emerahldz looked fairly progressive last season & ran well here for 2nd in October, might just have had enough by the time she ran at Doncaster later that month & I'll have her to return to form at a fair price in a wide open handicap at 2.40. The Yorkshire Cup looks to be between Brown Panther, Romsdal, & Snow Sky. Brown Panther has to give the other two 5lb's but he looks better than ever on his Irish Leger win from last season & the win at Meydan seven weeks ago. Romsdal was a fine 2nd in the St Leger & ought to hold Snow Sky who was two lengths back in 3rd on that form. Romsdal did well to win a Listed race at Kempton at just 10f's in March & the the slow pace he set didn't help him when outpaced in the John Porter at Newbury. The step back up in trip will help Romsdal & I'm looking for a bit more pace on here, the yard is having a great week & I'm hoping it continues in this. 3.45 A good looking Listed race for fillies where Realtra probably sets the form standard but it wouldn't surprise if one of the lightly raced ones had too much for her, I need a look at these first. 4.20 5f handicap for 3yo's & I'll take a chance on Excellent George in this. Made a lot of the running at 6f's in a valuable sales race LTO where the winner Bossy Guest has since run a screamer for 4th in the 2000 Guineas. I'm expecting Excellent George to be blazing away in front at this sharp track & hoping he can last out for the places at least. 4.50 Jacquotte Delahaye rather lost her way after running quite well up to mid June last year but bounced back to nearly nut the useful Godolphin owned Bow and Arrow when she reappeared at Redcar. Bow and Arrow had impressed at Beverley the run before & while she might have been flattered at Redcar a run to that level would have her in with a fair chance in this, she's the pick. 5.20 Another 3yo handicap this time at 12f's. I'll take peterhouse who did well to win at 10f's at Beverley LTO having got loose before that race & then having traffic problems during it. Up 6lb's but the step up in trip should suit & ground looks fine. The other single is Sakhalin Star in Hamilton's 6.55. This is the one that got no run when well fancied at Beverley two runs back & then probably hit the front too soon at Thirsk LTO. I get the feeling that this is one of those that needs it to drop just right for him but this race looks more than winnable in the form he's in. He's got no ground issues & should stay the extra furlong & he looks to have West Brit & Another for Joe to beat, these two were 1st & 2nd here over the trip 12 days ago, West Brit has a 6lb pen so the neck win should be turned around but they are both 7yo's & Sakhalin Star is only a 4yo so more to come :hope Bets Emerahldz 12/1 Excellent George 12/1 Jacquotte Delahaye 12/1 Peterhouse 10/1 0.5pt ew lucky 15, Betvictor Romsdal 35pts @ 9/4 Bet365 Sakhalin Star 25pts @ 3/1 Paddy Power, all BOG Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary First the good news. Mowgli does indeed bring the sun with him. The fish & chips from the Blue Fin are on top form. Which is more than can be said for my posted picks. Having viewed the 2yo's for the first I decide to invest on French at 11/2 with a saver on the top rated Lil's Joy who's got a bit warm. Both run alright but the winner is the Johnston trained, de Sousa ridden Delizia in good style on what is going to be a red letter day for them. The one to take from the race is the only unraced filly White Bullet who cops the curse of the best turned out (did look quite nice) doesn't get away that well on & runs on nicely for 3rd. We watch this up by the betting ring, Emerahldz has defected & I'm not replacing her, Mowgli wants to get pictures of Brown Panther so I suggest we head to the pre parade while most will be watching this next race. He gets his snaps, I can see the screen but the commentary is not audible down here, Notarised wins for Johnston/de Sousa. We watch the Yorkshire Cup from by the parade ring, the Brown Panther team including Michael Owen are a bit further up. Romsdal leads but is clearly done for before two out. It's between Brown Panther & Snow Sky, connections & Mowgli are shouting for their boy but Snow Sky beats him a half & all of us are unhappy. The 3yo fillies appear for the mile Listed race, I'm taken by Sperry for Gosden & Godolphin, we head off back to the betting ring where she's 7/2 second in the market to the Hamdan owned Yasmeen. Can I get 4's? There, one board showing 4/1, I still show I can move when needed, state my bet & as he's tapping the keyboard the odds change to 7/2. "I'll have that 4/1 it was when I asked for it" I say. The bookie looks at the slip, screws it up & prints another with 4's. "Did you get 4/1"? Asks Mowgli because he'd seen him change it. "Yep" All she needs to do is win now. Win she does, moving up heading to the final furlong & then past the front running Yasmeen who batlles back a bit but Sperry is a half length ahead at the line. The consistent Realtra is another lentgth back & the form looks solid, the front pair will win more races I think. I collect & we are stood by the boards with Mowgli's head stuck in the Post, he strikes a bet on Indescribable & the slip says 28/1. We'd seen this one win here last July but he hadn't seemed to have gone on & the two runs this year were pretty poor in truth. At this point we pop round the back for a drink, I'm on Excellent George & Mowgli's head is in the post again & he mentions Handsome Dude "That's the other I looked at" I say. We head back round where Mowgli backs Handsome Dude & then spots that Indescribable is only 12/1 on the board he's just had the other bet with, it's 12's all round in fact. I decide I'd better have a bit on Handsome Dude & a little bet on him & Excellent George is struck. Both show up for a long way then fade while Indescribable wins despite getting whacked over the head by a rival's whip in a driving finish. Mowgli collects from his 28/1 & we are both thinking that backing them before we go racing is not the way forward any more. We both don't fancy Dusky Queen on this ground for the next, she hoses up really, mines stone last. We cross to the middle of the track to get away after the last Mowgli backs Peterhouse which is mine & Shalabina neither of which trouble the judge. Johnston/de Sousa again with the aptly named Yorkidding for a fourtimer which when added to another winner at Newmarket gives my least favourite trainer a fivefold at just over 7,000/1, I can't help but think that had I backed any of them they'd still be out there looking for them. Later on at Hamilton Sakhalin Star goes off the well backed 9/4f.....

Tracked leaders, switched left and headway to lead over 1f out, soon ridden, kept on final furlong, headed near finish (op 11/4 tchd 3/1)
:eyes:eyes:eyes "After you Claude" A point back from the non runner in the lucky 15 is the sole posted return. The first race would run the two at Beverley the other day close for the worst I've ever seen, pass. I've gone with Monaleen in the 6.15. Needs to transfer the decent form from a class 3 at Wolves last time to grass but looks open to progress & the slight step up in trip should help. I'll have a look at the 2yo's at 6.45 before any bet, the four that have run haven't set the world alight with Tikthebox beaten 4.5l's at Leicester when 3rd topping my numbers with 55. I'd like a peek at the runners for the 3/4yo maiden up after as well, most of the fancied ones in the market have had a good few goes already. I'll take Bin Suroors Always Smile to be another to translate the aw form to turf at 7.45. I may have a poke at the now 18 runner 6f handicap, probably with a pin, then again I may just chuck muck at myself, it's certainly cheaper & probably slightly more fun. The last can go to New Strategy, again for Bin Suroor. He was beaten under a length in 4th at Epsom on his return & with that run & the drop back to 7f's from 8.5f's he should go well. The one I had as a big danger Go Dan Go has come out so while I'd get rule 4'd it looks a bit easier to win now. Not going mad this evening so... Monaleen 4/1 Always Smile 2/1 New Strategy 5/1 1pt trixie plus 3 x 2pt singles = 10pts staked, Betvictor BOG Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary We arrive at Doncaster & I'm glad I've put my big coat on, it's far from warm & going to get colder. In we go & into the big hall under the stand where Mowgli gets his head into the Racing Post in an attempt to find the winner for the opening Apprentice handicap which I've already told him is running the two at Beverley the other day close in the worst race ever competition. He agrees & we decide to not even go outside to watch as there's loads of telly's in here & it's warm. Just as they're about to set off he declares that "If he was backing owt in this it'd be Tapis Libre" Heading down the straight & Tapis Libre appears to be making some headway & Mowgli's getting a bit worried but then Sellingallthetime clears away from around a furlong out & Tapis Libre comes 2nd. Outside now for race two where there are two not running. He's got his head in the paper again & decides it's between the one I'm with Monaleen & Godolphin's Sound Refection who has some smart form at a high level but hasn't been seen since a poor run exactly a year ago. We both can't understand why the Paul Cole trained Lisamour is the jolly & he goes with Sound Refection who's backed into 100/30 2ndf at the off. Halfway down the straight & Kevin Stott is looking round for dangers on Sound Refection who's traveling easily, however Stevie Donohoe on Moleen is also swinging on the bit & when he says go Monaleen picks up & sweeps into the lead while Sound Refection can only run on at the same pace. Maven does her for 2nd close home & Mowgli's a bit disappointed but it was a good run after a year off really. I'm not disappointed, Monaleen wins by two & three parts & while there'll be a rule 4 I'm off & running. The stewards ask to see Paul Cole or his rep, who clearly isn't in a rush to go see them because they have to ask again....

The Stewards considered the running of LISAMOUR (IRE), ridden by Sean Levey and trained by Paul Cole, which finished unplaced. They noted the trainer’s representative could offer no explanation for the filly’s performance other than the filly ran flat having run seven days ago. The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of LISAMOUR (IRE) during routine testing failed to reveal any abnormalities.
:eyes:eyes:eyes We look at the 2yo's & decide that Top of the Bank from Kevin Ryan's is the pick but he's opened at 5/4, when he goes 6/4 we both have a small bet. He doesn't break well but settles at the back in touch while the also debut making Strand of Silk is leading. Two out & Spencer moves Top of the Bank up but when he asks for an effort heading to the last furlong he's greener than an off colour Martian. The penny drops but too late & while he runs on well he can't get to Strands of Silk & is a length & a quarter back. He'll know more next time, I've given the winner a 65 which is alright but nothing special & I wouldn't be rushing to back those that had already had a run anytime soon. Mowgli backs Ertidaad in the 3yo+ maiden & this one runs on late for a never in it really 3rd. I decide it's between Crystal Malt & Dark Profit & go with the latter at 2's, he then shortens up, then drifts again back to 2's while Crystal Malt is backed to 15/8f. Dark Profit holds every chance at the furlong pole but is hampered & was beaten anyway, Crystal Malt sails by them all to win, bugger picked the wrong one. Head in the paper time again & Mowgli decides it's between Always Smile, Sahaafy & Puissant, he goes for the latter which is the one I'm afraid of most actually. Puissant leads but at two folds up like a cheap deckchair & Always Smile hits the front. He's wandering about & comes close to the chasing Sahaafy but Dane O'Neill never stops riding & my pick gets home by three parts of a length. No bing bong & to be honest I can't remember the last time I heard that actually but...
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference inside the final furlong. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that the winner, ALWAYS SMILE (IRE), ridden by James Doyle, had interfered with SAHAAFY (USA), placed second, ridden by Dane O’Neill in that although, initially SAHAAFY (USA) had shied away from ALWAYS SMILE (IRE) and had drifted independently, ALWAYS SMILE (IRE) had then continued to hang right carrying SAHAAFY (USA) further right. The Stewards found Doyle in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he had failed to take sufficient steps to prevent the interference. They suspended him for 1 day as follows: Saturday 30 May 2015.
He goes to the loo & it's me that has the head in the paper now trying to find the winner of the 18 runner 6f handicap up next. I'm looking at O'Meara's Thornaby Nash who's not been seen for 613 days having landed a nursery at Redcar, however that run & the other decent bit of form were with juice in the ground & the white board near the weighing room where they write the results on in pen is stating that the going is good to firm, good to firm in places :unsure Erm right. I decide to use Mowgli's theory of backing Paul Mulrennan in sprints & have a small punt on Twin Point at 20/1. He takes over with the paper & decides he's having the discarded Thornaby Nash along with the 9yo Secret Witness who last won when Queen Victoria was a lad. These two are also around the 20/1 mark & we decide to lob the three in the recently discarded exacta punt to small money. Secret Witness does best in 7th while the other two keep each other company in 11th & 12th. I need New Strategy to take the last for a full house in the trixie plus bet. Mowgli quite likes him but he's now 9/4 on track, however he manages some 11/4 on his phone & then also backs Chevallier & Golden Spun on course. Chevallier is tracking the lead but curls up over a furlong out & is 7th. Golden Spun is "Always in rear" & is stone last. One place in front of him is New Strategy who looks to have a chance heading to two out but quickly downs tools. The stewards are busy again...
The Stewards considered the running of NEW STRATEGY (IRE), ridden by James Doyle and trained by Saeed bin Suroor, which finished unplaced. They noted the trainer’s representative could offer no explanation for the gelding’s performance. The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of NEW STRATEGY (IRE) failed to reveal any abnormalities. Paul Mulrennan, the rider of GOLDEN SPUN (USA), unplaced, reported that the gelding ran too free.
That clears that up then :eyes We go inside for a warm while the Human League get ready to warble. When they start up we head outside where it's now bloody freezing under a cloudless, starlit sky. For every decent one they do there's a clinker, Love Action is worth a clap if only to warm the hands a bit & after about 40 minutes we decide to bale out without hearing the big hit which doubtless they'll finish off with. Back in the car & I fire her up, on comes the radio which I have tuned to radio 2....

Don't. Don't you want me? You know I can't believe it when I hear that you won't see me

Crikey how spooky is that? Sara Cox with 80's night, some reasonable stuff on the way home actually. A turn round from the week in that the cash bets blob & the two winners from the small posted bet return 28.5pts after a small rule 4, such a pity that New Strategy was a big let down :\ I will nail one soon!! Singles etc W/R 7-38 Stakes 651.4pts Returns 608.13pts Profit/Loss -43.27pts Multiple bets Stakes 232pts Returns 145.26pts Profit/Loss -86.74pts Exacta/Trifecta -£4.80 The not sure what to call it but if it cops I’ll be on a beach somewhere with a cold drink in one hand & a hot blonde in the other bet Stakes 58pts Returns 33.09pts Profit/Loss -24.91pts Expenses £590 Right seven days on the bounce with Ripon on the agenda today. A pair of 2yo races to start, the second of which is a seller. 2.10 Twisting Hay heads my numbers with a 76 on softish ground from his Leicester debut, he'd still head the numbers with the 53 posted at Donny on good to firm after that but that apparent failure to go on from the first start along with Johnston training & the useless compared to de Sousa Adrian Nicholls on top means I ain't having this one, probably win by half the track now! The jolly is Sahreej at around 5/4 who would be the form pick on the length & a quarter 4th on debut in a better race than this at Newmarket's Guineas meeting. However I've only given him a 26 for that & while that doesn't mean he can't run faster when you add to that that Charlie Hills can't seem to buy a winner at the moment he hardly looks a good thing. It's 12/1 bar that pair, the other one with a number of any note is Dodgy Bob on a 47 from Ponty but while he was 3rd he was beaten over 10l's. I'll have a look in the hope that one of the newcomers might look the part for a bit ew. 2.45 The top rated here is Allsingingndancing with 51 from a 7.5l's 5th of nine at Wolves on Monday which hardly sets the pulse racing but that probably just about sets the bar for the form here which says it all really. Imshi's Little Bro clocked a 26 when beaten 13l's over 5f's here three weeks ago but that was a class 4 so this is a fair old drop in level here. Mustn't Grumble improved on the 4 awarded for the Brighton debut with 25 at class 3 at Chester 10 days ago but was beaten 8l's & this is an even bigger drop in class. The other four to run all have recorded a minus number with Final Warning doing so twice at -12 & then -35 :eek This would seem to be the new front runner for worst race ever. Pass. 3.15 Secret Hint let me down at Wetherby when beaten a length & a half by Ridge Ranger but she gets another chance here on 7lb better terms. She should have come on for the run & if she's going for big fish later she has to win this. The main danger for me is Love Island who won this off 2lb higher last season & she defected from a race at Thirsk yesterday where the ground was really fast & it won't be as quick here, she also is sure to handle the track having won here twice. 3.50 I must not back King Torus :spank:spank:spank:spank:spank In fact I must not back anything in this :spank:spank:spank:spank:spank 4.20 On the face of it the form of Star System's sole run is nothing to get excited about but you can only beat what's in front of you & while he only beat three rivals in a nothing maiden at Southwell he did so pulling a bus, he also sports a first time hood which is strange so why then have I gone for him? Basically it's because I suspect I could give the rest of these a race riding a rusty bike! The only other one that's won a race is Assault on Rome & that was a soft ground maiden at Doncaster ten runs ago. Star System should like the step up to nearly 10f's with stamina on the dam's side & I don't see why he won't go on the ground. Not going overboard though. 4.50 An exposed lot apart from perhaps Rozene who's won twice from seven starts including on her debut at Beverley last year. A win & a 2nd when last seen in August & she should have some more improvement in her, Rob Hornby claims 5lb & seems to know what he's doing. Scoreline is probably the danger but has had 29 starts which is a lot for a 4yo & needs a career best for me but Josh Doyle knocks off 5lb. The best of the exposed ones is probably Noodles Blue Boy who's run well both starts this season but he's a 9yo now. Bets Secret Hint 30pts @ 5/2 Betfair Sportsbook Star system 5pts @ 9/4 Skybet Rozene 5pts @ 7/2 Betvictor The above three a 1pt trixie @ 9/4, 9/4 & 7/2 Skybet, all BOG Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary The end of seven days on the bounce & yesterday rather sums up the highs & lows of this crazy, compelling, infuriating, magical game that is horse racing. We arrive in the car park under leaden skies, the big coats on again thankfully, it's cold again & the threat of rain hangs in the air. We cast an eye over the 2yo's for the first, I didn't fancy the Johnston runner before & even less now, the filly underdressed following him round is bigger than him & looks quite nice actually. The choice though is East Street Revue for me & I have a bit ew at 16/1. Mowgli doesn't fancy Johnston's or Hamdan's Sahreej either & employs the scattergun technique of backing four against the field at double figure prices. He scores a bullseye when Dodgy Bob gets on top of the 5/4f Sahreej in the final furlong to score by a length & a half. There's another 4.5l's to Underdressed in 3rd but East Street Revue never gets involved & doesn't seem to handle the undulations of this quirky track. Mowgli's said he's not playing in the 2yo seller up next but invests some of the Dodgy Bob winnings on Lady McGuffy & Pink Ice. I go with the top rated Allsingingndancing. There's no singing or dancing from me when this one also seems to dislike the track & beats one home which is Pink Ice with Lady McGuffy in 4th. The feature race up next with the first five in the Wetherby race three weeks ago clashing again. I'm with the 2nd from there Secret Hint who looks well enough beforehand. Mowgli takes the Wetherby winner & 3rd Ridge Ranger & Jamesbro's Girl. The Wetherby 4th Gran Canaria Girl wins by a neck from the fast finishing Ridge Ranger with Jamesbro's Girl 3rd. As Mowgli comments "That things only won crap class 5's & this is a class 3" I'm shaking my head at the run of Secret Hint who goes off at 7/4f & beats one home having never looked like getting involved & has stunk the place out. Even the stewards wake up.....

The Stewards considered the running of SECRET HINT, ridden by David Probert and trained by Andrew Balding, which finished unplaced. They noted the trainer’s representative could offer no explanation for the filly’s performance, other than that the filly may have been unsuited by the track. The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the filly during routine testing failed to reveal any abnormalities.
It is an quirky track as I've said but even so she's just awful. Mowgli decides he's with King Torus & Sound Advice for the next. I'm not supposed to be playing in this & certainly not with King Torus, however I end up backing Two for Two with Tudhope aboard. This is the low point of the day, Two for Two walks out off the stalls & loses several lengths, over to the form summery...
Slowly into stride, held up in rear, ridden over 2f out, kept on final furlong, never threatened leaders
I like Danny as a jockey I really do but I'm seriously brassed off with that effort, or should I say lack of, I'd have thought that was worth a word but no... King Torus who's usually held up & finds more bother than Joey Barton normally duels for the lead here & folds up tamely, Sound Advice who he was taking on up front ends up 3rd & Mowgli's not happy either & is chuntering that he ought to have backed the winner Dubai Dynamo! We've watched this from the stand & I leave him muttering away with his head in the paper while I go to see how many legs this Star System has got. Upon my return he tells me he can't have that one because it's only won a four runner nothing race at Southwell & it's 6/4. I wouldn't back it at that price either but I wouldn't back anything else against it, he takes Landwade Lad & Kelly's Finest against mine. Kelly's Finest never gets in the race, Landwade Lad tracks the lead & plods on for 3rd. This is one of the roughest races I've ever seen with bother at three & a half out which nearly sees Felix de Vega on the floor & then just as my lad is coming to challenge after the two pole Adrian Nicholls on Johnston's Regal Ways looks like he's going to put him over the rail. Probert snatches up, gathers him again & goes through the reopened gap to win. Hallelujah I've backed a winner, the stewards are wide awake now.....
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference one and a half furlongs out. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that REGAL WAYS (IRE), placed second, ridden by Adrian Nicholls, had drifted right under a left hand whip interfering with the winner STAR SYSTEM (USA), ridden by David Probert who had to check when challenging on the rail. The Stewards found Nicholls in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he had failed to take sufficient steps to prevent his mount from drifting right. They suspended him for 2 days as follows: Sunday 31 May and Monday 1 June 2015. The Stewards held a further enquiry into possible interference three and a half furlongs out. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that REGAL WAYS (IRE), placed second, ridden by Adrian Nicholls, had edged right shifting the winner STAR SYSTEM (USA), ridden by David Probert, on to FELIX DE VEGA (IRE), placed fifth, ridden by Graham Gibbons. As a consequence FELIX DE VEGA (IRE) clipped the heels of the rapidly weakening ASSAULT ON ROME (IRE), whose saddle had slipped. They found the interference was accidental.
Mowgli's got his head back in the Post & is in full on chunter mode, I decide to see if counting my selections legs will work again. Heading for the parade ring I see Rozene is 9/2, when I see her I decide that if she's still that price I'll have a play. I get back & she's 4/1 & 7/2 in places, Mowgli's decided it's between her & Noodles Blue Boy, I say I'm with Rozene & I'm wishing I'd taken the 9/2. Then he spots a board going the price, he's off & I'm after him, he gets on & I expect them to cut the price but I get on too. Back to the stand. She's bagged the stands rail & we want her to start well & make the most of it. She pings the gate & is bowling along in front, at a furlong they're queuing up behind her but Rob Hornby's saved a bit & when he asks her to go again she does & lands the spoils by a length. Talk about swings & roundabouts, Mowgli's off to collect & I give him my ticket to get mine too & shoot off to get some snaps. He meets me by the winners & then it's away before the last. Secret Hint lets the trixie down but I get 14.63pts back for 4pts. The singles return 38.75pts from a total stake of 40pts. Singles etc W/R 9-41 Stakes 691.4pts Returns 646.88pts Profit/Loss -44.52pts Multiple bets Stakes 236pts Returns 159.89pts Profit/Loss -76.11pts Exacta/Trifecta -£4.80 The not sure what to call it but if it cops I’ll be on a beach somewhere with a cold drink in one hand & a hot blonde in the other bet Stakes 58pts Returns 33.09pts Profit/Loss -24.91pts Expenses £590 I was nearly tempted to make it eight on the spin by going to Redcar today, Desert Law runs in the 3.50 where he would appear to hold a very good chance however if he was going to win one for me I would be hoping it would be at something a bit fancier than the 2/1 on offer here, I'll pass. Wetherby revert to the twig hoppers on Thursday but it would need to be something decent to get me out of full on flat mode & I'm more likely to fetch up at the Ponty evening meeting on Friday &/or Beverley next Saturday. Re: Rio's Racing Diary Not a bad card at Ponty this evening so a run out seems in order. I'm wary in the first, the top one Roayh ran yesterday at Ayr & beat one home, carries a 6lb pen if he turns up here & looks like one that would need it a bit softer. If he does turn out quickly again I'd be looking to take him on but if I have a bet now I can see him defecting & getting hit with a rule 4. What to take him on with is another thing nothing really jumps out & it's likely I'll have a stab with Harwoods Volante who let me down a month ago when I'd stayed at Thirsk right until the last race for him. He must be a bit better than that & he's having a go at a longer trip here, if he's a double figure price I may have a nibble ew at the track. I'm against the jolly Modernism in race two as well. He's won once on turf in 17 goes & that was heading for three years ago & while you might say he's quite well handicapped on some of his aw form he's not won on an artificial surface since January last year & Richard Fahey is the latest in a lengthy line of trainers to have a go with him. Most of these look exposed, one that doesn't is Jefferson City who was with John Gosden & ran a good race at the backend of 2013 at Nottingham & then never appeared last year. He's now with Micheal Appleby & ran a fair 3rd at Thirsk for him three weeks ago, staying on late to be a length down on the line, should come on for that & he's in a trixie plus singles. A class 2 for 2yo's at 7.30 where all the five runners have won at least once. Ravenhoe won the Brocklesby where Sir Dudley was 5th some 8.5l's adrift, Sir Dudley's since won at Nottingham where the 3rd & 4th have scored afterwards. Ravenhoe then was slowly away & never got involved at Newmarket but won at Newcastle after that beating Gin in the Inn by a length giving him 5lbs, got beat by Areen at York last week but was conceding 10lbs there. Gin in the Inn had won at Leicester on debut & was a tad disappointing in that Newcastle race. Taking Libertys finished well to score FTO at Beverley & should come on for that. Carrington ran green but wasn't beaten far at Newmarket on debut & then like many of Charlie Appleby's won on his second start when still green at Chelmsford. The speed numbers I've given them have Ravenhoe on 88 from Newcastle where Gin in the Inn was on 83 having clocked an 88 at Leicester before that to be joint top rated. Carrington has an 80 from his last run & Sir Dudley 73 from the Nottingham win. Taking Libertys gets a 43 from Beverley. Ravenhoe ought to beat Gin in the Inn on these terms & Sir Dudley too but I'm wanting to take him on, Carrington would seem the obvious choice but Taking Libertys caught the eye when winning having taken a while for the penny to drop. A look is needed but I'm looking forward to this race. 8.00 Yeeoow is favourite from the 3rd to Out Do here off the same mark a month ago & that one won at York last week, he has a poor strike rate though & hasn't won for two years. Jamesbo's Girl has a better strike rate & has won over C&D, good 3rd at Ripon off this mark on Sunday. I'll have another go with Signore Picolo who's found things happening a bit quick at 5f's on fast ground the last twice & the extra furlong on good ground here should suit. 8.30 Next Stop has been running well but was no match for Libran who's won again since at Beverley. I'll have Elle Dorado here, decent 2nd off a pound less at Redcar two runs back but then didn't act on the ground/track at Chester when upped to 12f's. Back to 10f's here on better ground & down in class as well. 9.00 Marasim probably sets the form bar here but Bin Suroor's four from eight with 3yo newcomers this year & has a decent record here too so My Call should go well. I need a look at these before playing though. Bets Jefferson City 6/1 Signore Picolo 7/1 Elle Dorado 7/1 1pt trixie plus 2 x 2pt singles = 10pts stakedb betvictor BOG Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary Not a lot of time so a two day round up probably tomorrow. The fixture list gets more bonkers by the year. Two weeks ago Lingfield's big Derby/Oaks trial day clashed with Ascot's Victoria cup card, today Beverley, Catterick & Haydock all race while the midlands have nothing. Next Saturday Chester & Haydock both have cards & so does York, the sole meeting in the South that day is at Chepstow, well South Wales, utter madness. We were torn between Beverley & Haydock, both are decent cards but Haydock will be on Beverley's big screen, well I hope it is :hope So Beverley it is. A trixie plus singles at Haydock & the same at Beverley with a single here too. 2.00 Haydock William of Orange defects. Noble Silk won this off 3lb less last year but had had a run then unlike now. Nearly caught was 2nd last year & is off the same mark here, he's had a pipe opener with a good run at Chelmsford, likes a bit of juice in the ground & should go well again. Another change in race planning sees the Hilary Needler moved from a Wednesday evening slot to the same card as Beverley's other good 2yo race the Continental Trophy which is first up at 2.40 I have Furiant & First Selection joint top rated on 93, the former from a fast ground class 4 at Musselburgh, the latter from a class 5 at Southwell. Lathom is next best with 87 from a C&D win at class 5 on good, with stablemate Gallipoli clocking a 68 on fast at Donny. All these have had just the one run & all should improve. King's Mimic has run twice over C&D clocking 36 when 3rd & then 66 when winning, both on good but the latter was at class 6 where El Principe was over 7l's back. Kingsthistle makes his debut & is from a stable that don't usually have FTO 2yo winners. According to the Racing Post site the weights are 8st 12lb with 2lb pens for class 5 winners & 4lb pens for class 4, with kingsthistle getting 3lb knocked off for not running. Furiant's carrying 4lb more for the class 4 but so are Gallipoli & Lathom for class 5's, don't get it :unsure First Selection carries 2lb for is class 5 win, still don't get it :unsure Need a look as usual. Haydock 3.10 3yo's have a good record in this so I'm having a poke at Explosive Lady. She won on debut at Nottingham & then ran well in a Group 3 at Ascot & a Listed race at Ripon, finished off just held in a sales race in Ireland & gets weight from all these & the price is motre than fair. Hilary Needler. Easton Angel has a 99 from class 5 at Musselburgh but that was on soft. Next up is Kept Under Wraps on 98 from good to soft at Notts also at class 5. Opal Tiara has an 88 from wolves at the same class, while Holy Grail scored a 70 at Ripon on soft again at class 5 & looks the Fahey second string on jockey bookings. All these have one run, one win profiles. New Road Side heads the numbers on a 103 from the 3l's 5th in a York Listed last week having clocked 67 on debut at Southwell, don't like the jockey one bit. Arranmore Girl ran 4th here then scored 50 when winning a class 6. Majestic Bond posted a good 85 on debut at Redcar but let me down here at class 6 when only getting 49. Socialites Red looks held by Opal Tiara, Vocalise would need to be a bit useful on debut. Again I need a look but I'm leaning towards Kept Under Wraps. 3.45 Haydock I like G Force but he has a lot to do FTO with a Group 1 pen. Hot Streak should strip fitter for the run in France & on ground with a little juice can land this race again. The main single today is Maven in the 3.50 at Beverley. She's only a couple of pounds higher than her last win & ran really well at Donny last week where she ran into an unexposed one in Monaleen, ground & trip are no problem & she's won at ponty & Ripon so she should handle this track. Starlit Cantata is on a hat trick but all her forms on the aw & she's none from six on turf. Miss Lucy Jane won twice here last year but at a lower level & she was poor on her last start last season & again FTO but that was on soft. 4,25 Saint Thomas has won four at this C&D & should strip fitter for the run here a month ago. Leadrene was dreadful here on her return a month ago & on her last run last season, why is she favourite & should she win will the stewards have her trainer in for a chat? 5.00 Conor Zur is another with C&D form, good win at Ayr two runs back & soft ground didn't suit LTO, 5.25 Mrs Biggs ran well at Thirsk last week on fast ground & can take the last. Bets. Nearly Caught 5/1 Explosive lady 12/1 Hot Streak 9/2 1pt trixie plus 3 x 2pt singles, Betvictor Saint Thomas 7/1 Conor Zur 15/2 Mrs Biggs 7/2 1pt trixie plus 3 x 2pt singles, Bet365 Maven 30pts @ 11/4 Skybet, all BOG Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary Friday evening at about 6pm & I'm sat on a bench near the end of the parade ring waiting for the runners for the first & watching some right sights coming in for pontefract's 80's night. I see Jason who runs the website for the now defunct O'Meara racing club leading Harwoods Volante towards the end saddling box so I wander over & lean on the rail while they get him ready. When they've done he sees me & comes over & I ask him if they think he'll get a mile? He thinks so but is worried by the draw which almost has him on the M62. Graham Lee is riding now & not Danny Tudhope, later on Josh Doyle is on Signore Piccolo & not Danny & he'll be claiming 7lb which is even more interesting. I spot one of the two chaps I know that have bits & pieces in several horses in the parade ring & Graham's here for Blue Maisey in this & Yeeoow later. I wander round the front where as usual there's a big Friday evening crowd, Harwoods Volante is 10/1 & Blue Maisey 22's, I have small win on Harwoods & an even smaller ew on Maisey. She never gets involved but Graham Lee somehow gets Harwoods across from his M62 draw onto the rail & is making the running. He's still up there rounding the turn into the short straight, keep him going Graham. Keep him going he does but the well backed Beautiful Stranger catches him in the last few yards, bugger. I'm round by the winners when Mowgli pops up having come straight from work & getting in just before the off. We go for a look at the next lot parading & Modernism is walking around so wet it looks like they lobbed a bucket of water over him, I'm on Jefferson City here & Mowgli decides to back Satanic Beat who runs well for 3rd. Jefferson City makes a bit of headway coming to the bend in & plods on for 6th leading to the stewards deciding to have word which is a bit odd because it's not that bad a run & 99 times out of a 100 they're dozing when much worse happens....

Michael Appleby, the trainer of JEFFERSON CITY (IRE), placed sixth, reported that the gelding was unsuited by the going which was good to firm, good in places.
Now having bothered to get the trainer in & getting a bit more than the usual "No explanation" tripe & the way I see it he's saying the ground was too lively for him, I'd have been straight back in with "It's good to firm, good in places here, 8.5 on he going stick & three weeks ago he runs an excellent 3rd at Thirsk on ground that's officially good to firm & 9.3, how come he handled that"? Maybe they did, maybe they decided to just nod off after all, to be honest I just thought he wasn't up to it but if you make an effort then go the distance. The 2yo's next. We're not having Ravenhoe & are torn between Carrington who's a bit full of himself but not over the top & Taking Libertys. I decide to go with Carrington given the decent time when winning his last start & so does Mowgli. Ravenhoe drifts a bit but still goes off 9/4f, he makes the running until early in the straight & then drops away tamely & I know I dislike his trainer but this is the sort of run that needs looking at. Gin in the Inn is making the best of his way home & looks like he's not for catching but then Carrington gets going & is hauling him in in, right on the line he nuts Gin in the Inn, however... Taking Libertys is being scrubbed at before the bend in & we'd thought that one wasn't winning when he comes down the outside & mows the pair of them down. Bugger wrong one! I decide that with Josh Doyle knocking the extra 7lb off Signore Piccolo is worth an extra bet in the next. Mowgli decides to join me & also backs Vallarta who'd run well at Donny the other day. That one runs alright for 4th but Signore Piccolo just loses his place a bit coming to the bend, then his run gets blocked & he has to switch but he's in the clear & flying on the rail in the last furlong, then again so is Yeeoow who gets up close home & wins a neck. Another close but no cigar, Graham's all smiles in the winner's. Mowgli backs Next Stop & also backs Elle Dorado. All evening we've been taking on the market leaders & this one is Godolphin's Bittern who's the one with just some iffy aw form. Backed into 11/8 she takes it up over a furlong out & wins easily, Mowgli bags another 2nd with Next Stop but Elle Doardo pulls up & the horse ambulance sets off for the far side of the track & it doesn't look good. However on the BHA site later....
Richard Kingscote, the rider of ELLE DORADO, which was pulled up, reported that the filly moved poorly. The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the filly found her to be stiff.
I would assume from that that she's alright, hope so. Going back through the betting ring towards the parade ring & My Call is 9/4 & an odd 5/2, this is the one I'm thinking I may back against the jolly Marasim only that one isn't the favourite now Arc Cara is & I fancy that one even less. Having checked that My Call has the required number of legs we head back towards the front. Mowgli is after nipping in the loo but they're queuing out of the door so he goes through into old Silver ring & says he'll see me by the rail. My Call is now 2/1 on every board, Arc Cara is on the slide & I see these flip flopping so I take the 2's & head to the rail. My Call Hardens to 13/8f, I keep looking for Mowgli but by the time they jump off he's nowhere to be seen. Coming to the bend & My Call is about 4l's back & I've just muttered "You'll need to sprout wings from there Buick" when he does exactly that & in a matter of strides he's upsides the leader & then gone. Four lengths down at two out & he wins by a long looking seven lengths from the 75 rated Marasim, methinks this one is more than useful & I'm looking forward to seeing how far this one's star rises. Off to collect & then round to snap a shot in the winners, I'm just about to text Mowgli when he sends me one & he's headed to the car park & I head off after him but he's gone. Later I find out when he'd got back My Call was 7/4 so he'd backed Marasim instead, 2nd again. Nothing from the 10pt trixie but My Call bales me out on the cash front. Beverley. The sun beams down, this is more like it. We're both not playing in the first, I have Nearly Caught running in the race that's off five minutes before here at Haydock. Mowgli's got his head in the Post & declares that Seamour's running in this which he'd backed at York last week & sets of to see if any off the boards are taking away bets. He returns just after the off & no they weren't & by the time he'd gone in the Betfred shop they were off. Nearly Caught runs a good race for 3rd, Seamour wins at an SP off 15/2 & Mowgli is thinking of going to look for a bus to chuck himself in front of. The opener here goes to the 6/5f Taffetta who not only has Barry McUseless aboard but also is lumbered with the curse of the best turned out, impressive. We head to the pre parade for the 2yo colts & geldings. Furiant looks good & actually wins the best turned out but I like First Selection, Mowgli backs Lathom. I manage to grab some 9/2 & we watch from the rail just past the winning post. Furiant leads until about a furlong & a half out & then back peddles, Lathom takes it up & is making the best of his way home when First Selection mows him down to win going away & this is another useful tool. I'm collecting & Mowgli's run of placeyitus continues. We look at the 2yo fillies in the pre parade, I'm having Kept Under Wraps while Mowgli's taking Easton Angel who also looks the part. Having secured a bet we head back to the rail for a frantic few minutes. Explosive Lady runs a good race for 3rd again at Haydock & no sooner is that done than we are off here. Kept Under Wraps is most disappointing & beats one of the 10 home...
The Stewards considered the running of KEPT UNDER WRAPS (IRE), ridden by Tony Hamilton and trained by Richard Fahey, which finished unplaced. The Stewards noted the explanation of the trainer's representative that the filly boiled over in the preliminaries.
I'd not seen them in the main ring having headed off to have a bet & get a spot for Haydock but she'd looked fine in the pre parade, hey oh. Mowgli's run of places is snapped in some style when Easton Angel bursts through a gap in the last furlong & wins most impressively. I've done the times & given First Selection a cracking 118 from the colts race, however this pales compared to the 131 clocked by Easton Angel & on my numbers I make her the fastest 2yo, male or female to have run in Britain or Ireland so far. Wherever she runs next I shall be on. We dive in the shop to watch Gleneagles win the Irish Guineas & then back to the pre parade. Mowgli's not having Maven, doesn't like Rachel Richardson for one. He backs Miss Lucy Jane & Puzzle time, we head back to the rail to see if the Qatar racing boys can win the Temple stakes with Hot Streak. Indeed they do, unfortunately it's not Hot Streak who's 6th but Pearl Secret. Again no sooner is that done than we are away here. Rachel Richardson makes every yard & has enough left at the line to hold Puzzle Time by a neck, I think Rachel Richardson is great. Miss Lucy Jane is tailed off & last & seems to have lost the plot. Mowgli backs Fazza & Leaderene in the next, the latter is Johnston's & stunk the place out LTO. I'm on Saint Thomas, we are on the rail again & I point to King of the Celts & say jokingly "Rubbish Rachel for a quick double" She does it again holding on by a neck from Saint Thomas who's gone off at 10/1, I don't like Rachel anymore, only kidding!! A quick scan to see if she's in the next, no. Mowgli backs Mfiftythreedotcom who never shows. Cono Zur leads for me but is done for by the last furlong. The well fancied So it's War who was cruising LTO at 2f's more then found nil looks beat here than rallies to win by a nose.....
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the apparent improvement in form of the winner, SO IT'S WAR (FR), ridden by Phillip Makin and trained by Keith Dalgleish, which had never previously been placed. They interviewed the trainer's representative who stated that the gelding was suited by the drop back in trip to a mile and the faster ground on this occasion. They noted his explanation and ordered SO IT'S WAR (FR) to be routine tested.
At this point we bale out, there's a fair size crowd & getting out of the car park here is a work of art at times. Halfway home & Mowgli informs me Mrs Biggs has come 2nd, a look later shows she led & was nutted close home. Again not a thing from the trixies but at least most ran a race. Re: Rio's Racing Diary After an odd week where I could have gone racing Monday to Friday but didn't because really it was a load of rubbish on offer it's back out again & off to York. No Mowgli, he & Mrs Mowgli are off to check out Chester on the PL raceday, not my cup of tea Chester, been once, too many people in too small a space for me & it's a bit much when the people peering over the city wall have got a better view of events than those inside the track. A single, a tilt at the windmill & a 2yo race to look at. York 1.45 Alfred Hutchinson won here at the Dante meeting over a mile, in fact he's won here twice & run well too & the drop back to 7f's shouldn't be a problem or the ground or the draw in 2 & a 4lb rise seems fair. There are 16 runners what I don't want is the bog standard non runner please :hope Haydock 2.00 Kleo did me a couple of favours last season & ran really well in a Group 2 at Newmarket on her return, the doubt would be the step up to just about a mile & a half but she stayed 10.5f's at York & Donny well enough last year, ground seems no problem. York 2.20 Red Galileo isn't one to bet your life on having won just a nothing Kempton maiden in 15 goes but he does have some smart placed form at a high level & the step up to 1m 6f could be what he needs. Clever Cookie deadheated for this last year but has to give them all weight & most of the others are stepping up in class so I'll risk Red Galileo. Newmarket 3.20 I thought Penhill was too short at Ascot LTO & he only just held on there. He's been stuck up 7lb for that & needs a career best here & a best of 2/1 appeals not one jot. I'll have a go with Elhaame who looked an improving sort for Cumani last year & cost Godolphin 120,000gns, should be more to come even if I'd rather he'd gone to Charlie Appleby. York 3.30 I have history with Comedy King, horrible history in truth, however I'll take him to find the underfoot conditions to his exact liking today & he ought to come on for the decent 2nd at Donny on his return, seemed to handle the step up to this trip there. Up 2lb for that but he's not really because Kevin Stott can claim 3lb here & coudn't in the Donny race. York 4.05 Those that have run from these 2yo's haven't set the world alight so far, Tawakkol heads the numbers from York LTO on 63 but he's had three goes already. Another Touch was 3l's behind Tawakkol in that race & it wouldn't surprise me if he's a good bit closer today with that experience behind him. Age of Empire is the only other one to have run & he ought to improve for the three & a bit lengths 7th at Newmarket but the time was nothing much. As usual a look will be required here. Newmarket 4.30 Kickboxer ran alright at York on his return & should be better for that & he makes up the perm bet. The single is Dreamlike in the 4.40 at York. Improved with each run last year ending up with a battling win at Lingfield in December, step up in trip should suit & the 2nd to Star of Seville at Donny is quite smart even if she was 6l's back. Music and Dance has a similar profile & should go well. I watched the race that Tazffin won at Windsor LTO & while she has talent she looks a bit quirky. Bets Dreamlike 20pts @ 9/2 1. Alfred Hutchinson 8/1 2. Kleo 9/2 3. Red Galileo 8/1 4. Elhaame 9/1 5. Comedy King 7/2 6. Kickboxer 11/2 Cover these in six doubles, six trebles, three fourtimers & the sixtimer using the following plan. 16 bets@ 0.25pts each way = 8pts staked, all Betvictor BOG. Re: Rio's Racing Diary I used to love York but I'm getting more & more brassed off with the place & by the time I'd done on Saturday I was actually thinking that I might have to reconsider going there especially on a Saturday. Things started off well enough with the fish & chips from the Blue Fin on top form again. Across the track, ground on the fastish side for me & in. They parade for the first. Now I have a choice normally I can stay by the parade ring & watch the race on the big screen or go up the track. Today I don't have the choice because the big screen is turned more towards the stands, there's one on the end of the stand but the picture quality is poor so it's off up the track. The reason the main screen is turned is that the second screen normally positioned at the back of the centre of the track enclosure at between the furlong & half furlong markers isn't here today. It's crowded up here, trying to get a view of the screen at all is a work of art but as they head down the straight I can just about see that Alfred Hutchinson is going well. He hits the front heading to one out but can't stay there, still he manages 2nd & the place part of the perm is landed. Last year at this meeting I'd had a gripe about the away racing on the big screen, I'd backed one at Haydock which had been involved in a photo finish, as soon as the race was over they'd gone back to showing them in the parade ring at York, no result & I'd had to trek to the bookies to find out what had happened. That won't happen this year because they're not showing the away meetings at all! I head inside to watch the 2.00 at Haydock at the Betfred, again it's crowded & I'm stood there thinking I might as well be at home in comfort, I could put the kettle on & see the action without having to peer round the moron in front of me who can't keep still. The mood doesn't improve when Kleo gets squeezed for room & then fails to stay. There's no point in wandering right back to the parade ring, by the time I get there they'll have gone down for the 2.20 so I hang about up that end. I need Red Galileo in the first three here, he travels well, takes it up at three out & no sooner hits the front than he's treading water, get 3rd..... He's 4th. Clever Cookie wins despite carrying the pen that usually scuppers runners in this & is turning into a serious horse. I decide to wander back to the parade ring. I haven't backed anything in the sprint but intend to have a poke at something each way. Having had a look at them & a scan of the card I plump for Green Door. Back through the drunken masses to the betting ring where I'm trying to find a bookie going a quarter the odds for this 20 runner handicap & failing. I will not back at a fifth, I will pack the game in first. I get a spot to watch, it looks like Green Door is rubbing salt in the wounds by running a big race, only it's not Green Door it's Willbeme in similar colours which fools not only me but the racecourse commentator at one point. She's 3rd, Green door is....

Held up, ridden halfway, never threatened
At least I dodged that one. No point in trapsing back to the parade ring because I want to watch Newmarket's 3.20. I might as well have not bothered as this one also finishes one out of the places but is beaten 6l's by the 3rd. This however was a sight better than Penhill who I couldn't have had at the morning 2/1 never mind the 6/4 that he goes off here & trails in 7th, on not a red letter day for Luca the stewards have a word.....
Luca Cumani, the trainer of PENHILL, placed seventh, reported that the gelding was unsuited by the track.
Things don't improve for him or me when Comedy King throws in a shocker some ten minutes later, I'd have thought this was worth a natter as well & I've looked at the BHA site expecting to see something like "The grass was too short/long, the wind was blowing the wrong way, he got out of the wrong side of the bed" Nothing, not a peep, Comedy King eh, I don't see what's funny. Now I do go back to the parade ring to look at the 2yo's. I can't have Tawakkol who's had three goes, Down the card I've written... Age of Empire, nowt special. Aleef, ditto. Another Touch, ok. Back to Bond, nowt special. Champagne City, ok but then he gets his tackle out! Chip or Pellet, skittish, rearing up & what sort of a name is that anyway? Galileo Gold, NO, right scabby object, get it in a breadcake I'll eat it later! I decide to back Another Touch & trail back to the betting ring to do so. I need not have bothered, he breaks ok then seems to not want to go forward which is not good for a racehorse, he gets a bump & completely downs tools & beats one home....
The Stewards noted that approximately two furlongs out GALILEO GOLD, placed second, had shifted slightly left and TAWAKKOL, placed third, had shifted slightly right, leaving ANOTHER TOUCH, unplaced, momentarily short of room, but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved either GALILEO GOLD or TAWAKKOL ’s placing. The Stewards considered the running of ANOTHER TOUCH, ridden by Tony Hamilton and trained by Richard Fahey, which finished unplaced. They noted the trainer could offer no explanation for the colt’s performance. The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of ANOTHER TOUCH during routine testing failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Age of Empire is quite impressive actually. Galileo Gold escapes the breadcake & runs a fair 2nd. Back inside to see if Kickboxer can rescue anything from the perm down at Newmarket. He goes off at 7/1, he's not winning but is going to place, or is he? He tries his best to come 4th but manages to hang on by a nose for 3rd. I'm back down by the parade ring watching the 4.40 on the poxy screen on the end of the stand, I'm away as soon as this is over, this is the main hope for the day & I'm not confident, Cumani's are running like their legs are tied together & a little voice is saying just go home. I ought to have listened, he drifts to 11/2, Kevin Stott's already scrubbing away turning in, he's well beaten, having said that he still beats the Stoute runner who's gone off the jolly & the stewards must be having a chat.... Er no actually. I've had enough, back across the track & home. Not a disaster betting wise, 2.06pts back from the perm & nothing from the single. Me though I'm not right, I go racing to look at the horses & I've barely been to the parade ring today. We've got good away meetings at Haydock, Newmarket & Chester if the latters your thing & the Sunday we manage Nottingham & Fakenham, I think I'd be better off at home. I need a new hobby, stamp collecting, knitting... Actually I'm still not well from the best part of four weeks ago, what I really need is the sun to come out, it's supposed to be Summer for Christ's sake. Re: Rio's Racing Diary

Keep up the er good work? It could be worse you might live in Ireland where we had our summer last Tuesday night.
Ours arrived yesterday & wonder of wonders it's still here today. My mood will improve once I shift this annoying bug off my chest, anyway... Two years ago on this day I was stood by the rail cheering home Target & Richard Hughes in the Oaks. That would be the rail at Catterick & not Epsom. I did think I might try to do the same today but alas the Catterick card doesn't appeal, at first look though Doncaster tomorrow should be worth the effort. Anyway the Oaks, Derby & sometimes the Coronation Cup are races I have a go at using my version of the VDW method. The three shortlisted fillies today are Legatissimo, Star of Seville & Together Forever & really the one ought to be Legatissimo but there's this thought in the back of my mind that she isn't going to win this. The 1000 Guineas win is the best form on paper & she ought to be better over further than that mile but I'm just wondering if the Newmarket race was a bit of a one off, a fluke. Her form before that was alright but just that & she was beaten fair & square by Jack Naylor at the Curragh in August at a mile & getting 5lbs as well. Jack Naylor seems just as likely to improve for the step up to 12f's & ran a blinder on her return in the Irish 1000. I did say after the Musidora that Star of Seville didn't look an Oaks winner to me, she just held on & I don't think the extra distance here will suit. Neither it seems does Dettori who's on Jazzi Top here who did interest me a bit but the bare form of the Pretty Polly win is nothing much. Again the Crystal Zvezda form from Newbury is visually impressive but lacks substance but you can only beat what's in front of you. Lady of Dubai is another with a similar profile having won a Listed race at Goodwood on her return. In the end I've taken Together Forever. She seemed to get better for racing last year & having finished 3rd in that Curragh race behind Jack Naylor & Legatissimo she then notched a hat trick culminating in the Fillies Mile at Newmarket. The return head 2nd to Star of Seville ought to have her just right, she should get the trip & handles most ground. She's a fair price in what looks a wide open race. Bet Together Forever 10pts @ 9/1 Bet365 BOG Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary Now what did I say about Legatissimo?

there's this thought in the back of my mind that she isn't going to win this.
As she hits the front & goes to win her second classic I'm thinking "Got that wrong" but then hang on what's this finishing? Qualify :eek Gets up on the line, couldn't have had that & I don't believe the owners Husband for one second when he says he's not completely surprised either. Together Forever ran well for a long way but was back peddling when she & several others got involved in a bumping match. I suspect that Ryan Moore was less than his usual cheerful self too when the stewards had him in after...
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference approaching the 2 furlong marker. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that LEGATISSIMO (IRE), placed second, ridden by Ryan Moore, had interfered with LADY OF DUBAI, placed third, ridden by Adam Kirby. The Stewards found Moore in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that in he shifted right creating a gap, shifting LADY OF DUBAI slightly off its intended line. They suspended Moore for 1 day as follows: Sunday 21 June 2015.
Such is life smiler :D Singles etc W/R 10-44 Stakes 751.4pts Returns 759.38pts Profit/Loss +7.98pts Multiple bets Stakes 266pts Returns 159.89pts Profit/Loss -106.11pts Exacta/Trifecta -£4.80 The not sure what to call it but if it cops I’ll be on a beach somewhere with a cold drink in one hand & a hot blonde in the other bet Stakes 66pts Returns 35.15pts Profit/Loss -30.85pts Expenses £620 I've yet to back anything in the Derby & I'm thinking that I might not bother. It wouldn't be a shock if Gosden takes Jack Hobbs out because of the ground & even while I'm writing this at about 10am those nice bookie chappies are shortening him in to 4/1 to fleece early players with an extra 5p on the rule 4 should he defect. Golden Horn ought to win but again that nagging voice is saying something could nut this one too but what that might be I have no idea. I have had a bet at Epsom in the Woodcote at 2.35. I can't have this Buratino, for me he's not progressing, on my numbers his best run was on his debut with a 93, then he dipped to 86 when beaten at Ascot & up a touch to 91 when winning at Newmarket. The last run at Sandown was only 77, he was 2nd but stuffed by the winner by 5l's. Art Collection clocked 108 when winning at Brighton on good to soft & should go here if handling the track there. The interesting one is Miss Moneypenny who posted a corking 125 when winning on fast ground at 5f's at Windsor LTO. The 3rd there has won since & the extra furlong here should suit Miss Moneypenny & 8/1 is a fair price. In terms of Doncaster I have a bet in every race, every one of them with the same jockey. When I was looking last evening I noted that Hanagan was here & not Epsom, Hamdan has two in the first at Epsom & one up at Musselburgh, he's also got two in the first at Donny & one in the last. The two in the opener both make their debuts & the Stoute trained one in the last goes handicapping having failed to set the pulse racing in three maidens. In between the twice champ has five outside rides & having looked & failed to see anything that takes my fancy I've decided that backing all seven in doubles, sixtimers & the seventimer is this weeks tilt at the windmill. I may back something in the opener at the track anyway. We have 15 2yo fillies & only four of them have run, Hillside Dream sets the standard having clocked a 99 when beaten fav at Newmarket on her second start but it wouldn't take a world beater from the newcomers to win this. Mermaid scored 88 for her debut 3rd at Leicester & should go well but the other two that have run need to improve about three stones. Hanagan's on Raaqy who's bred for it being by Dubawi out of the Cheveley Park/1000 Guineas winner Natagora. 2.30 Always Resolute won at 50/1 at Haydock last year & ran quite well back there LTO, tries this St Leger trip for the first time & could still improve being only a 4yo in a race where most look exposed. 3.05 Wildes looked fairly progressive until his last start but probably got stuck in the mud on that first turf run, fast ground today so no excuses there. 3.40 Abbey Angel was another improving type last backend, gets 3lb off the boys in this & should run well if ready to roll FTO. 4.15 There seems to be a few "After you Claude's" in this maiden which includes Compton River who's had nine goes but keeps finding at least one or more too good. Will probably do so again here but if your backing all Hanagan's he goes in. 5.10 Hard to see Augusta Ada winning this but the above comment applies here. 5.40 No idea if we'll still be here but Raddeh ought to be better than she's shown so far but isn't bottom weight for nothing. I'm half tempted to back Spryt but he's another that keeps running well without winning. Bets Miss Moneypenny 12pts @ 8/1 Bet365 Raaqy 5/1 Always Resolute 14/1 Wildes 11/2 Abbey Angel 10/3 Compton River 9/2 Augusta Ada 14/1 Raddeh 7/1 21 doubles. 7 sixfolds & all seven to 0.5pts = 14.5pts staked, Paddy Power, all BOG Rio.
