MMA Betting Thread

Ive been enjoying my MMA at the moment but have never actually put my money where my mouth is and never actually bet on it despite saying blah blah blah wins easy lol, I just think too much can go wrong due to how volatile it can be! So figured Id give it a go and try something similar to the boxing thread. My aim is to double the bank by the end of the year and never stake more than 10% of the balance. I am by no means an expert in betting this way - as stated above these are my first bets but wilkl try and justify each selection as best I can. I believe I can at least break even by the end of the year but wont be too dissapointed if I dont - more afraid of looking a numpty on here which is again why I will quite selective. Starting bank will be 100 aiming to get to 200 by 2010, no more than 10% of bank staked at once - gl me:):hope Current bank - 100

Re: MMA Betting Thread Bet 1 - Escudero bt Miller Both contracted to the UFC on the back of their performances on TUF. Escudero is unbeaten in 11 and this is first fight since becoming TUF champ when pretty much dominating the more than capable Philip(e?) Nover in the finale. He has tremendous wrestling skills which stand him in good stead when controlling the Octagon. Miller was rasw as can be when on TUF but proved himself more than capable and impressing despite his QF loss to Lauzon which was no disgrace. Unlike Escudero, Miller has been busy of late scoring impressive victories over Gurgel and Browning. Despite this I think Escudero to be more polished and despite wrestling being his main strength is more than comfortable in other areas. Hes not a big puncher but is good on the subs. I really think his wrestling is going to serve him well and he is going to be able to pretty much control the more raw Miller and win by UD or maybe a sub. So first bet is a max for me (party the resaon I started the thread). Rcommended bet 10pts Escudero bt Miller a tasty 8/11 at Blue Square.

Re: MMA Betting Thread Bet 2 - Franklin bt Belfort Back in the UFC after a near 5 year hiuitus (spelling? lol) Belfort returns to fight Rich Franklin. Two totally different fighters - Franklin is Mr Cosistent, what you see is what you get. He is a solid all round fighter and a great tactician. Belfort is certainly the more explosive of the to and at times 'The Phenom' can indeed look phenomanal - he won the heavyweight title way back at UFC 12 (wow that was 12 years ago) and is now competeing as middleweight. As opposed to Franklin you never going to know which Vitor turns up. One thing I do know is he has been backed for this fight and Dana White wouldnt have him back unless he thought he was capable, both of which are a bit of a worry. Thing with Belfot is his well documented nerves and his tendancy to freeze on the big stage - well it doesnt get much bigger than this for your first fight back in the UFC - main event at UFC 103. Looking at the big picture although Belfort can beat anyone on his day, those days seem to come further and further apart so Im going side with Franklin who with his calm demeanor have never seen fight poorly (maybe except a couple of times against Silva, but who cant look bad gainst that guy at the mo). Recommended bet 50 pts Franklin bt Belfort 5/6 Boylesports.

Re: MMA Betting Thread

I just wanna see Fedor sign to UFC but it looks unlikely at the moment Will have to happen one day though Lesnar V Fedor would be a MASSIVE money spiiner for everyone. Dana knows it too
Damn straight it would and to be fair to Dana I think hes bent over backwards to try and make it happen but circumastances and all:(. Either way still massively looking forward to him fighting Carwen. I got laughed at when I said Lesnar could have a serious im pact on the UFC especially when he was subbed by Mir but I never dreamed his ascnt would be so fast. The Carwen fight will be very interesting though, good to see Lesnar in with someone his own size who has the potential to seriously hurt him with one shot.

Re: MMA Betting Thread I totally agree. When I heard Lesnar was going into UFC I just laughed but he is immense, such an athlete - changed my opinion in a big way and fair play. A character too, after the Mir fight :lol The press conference was funny and Dana was saying how hard he had tried to get Fedor, but I think it makes more sense to built up Brock a bit first then it would be one of the biggest fights of all time Good luck with your picks, personally I think you are brave betting on the richie Franklin Belfort fight!

Re: MMA Betting Thread Mixed start with the nap of the night coming in albeit not the way I was expecting! TheRats reservations proved to be true with the 2nd bet, I underestmated Vitor and was wrong to ignore the money for him and Danas decision to re-sign him. Franklin never got going and was buzzed leaving himself open for inevitable stoppage. 22.72 profit on the night. New bank - 122.72

Re: MMA Betting Thread Came on here fully expecting to post a double on Bader and Machida. But having seen odds of 1/4 for both having serious second thoughts. Rua is 7/2 to beat Machida which seems pretty reasonable cosidering his stature but can you back against someone who at the moment I think looks pretty special and in myeyes pretty unbeatable. But stepping back they are all pretty much beatable at some point in mma. Machida has some very good scalps on his undefeated record and its well documented that hes barely been touched in the UFC never mind the not losing a round. Couple this with the fact of his impressive ko's in his last 2 fights against high calibre opponents, thus losing his 'boring' tag he looks a genuine all round fighter. Rua on the other hand has 3 losses on his record but was considered one of the pound fo pound best on his UFC debut against Griffin, which he ultimately lost pretty decisively. But there seems to be reasons/excuses in all his losses.....His cardio was done within 5 minutes against the wiley Griffin, which was attributed to a knee injury before the fight and was operated on after. Personally I wouldnt call the Coleman fight a loss but a freak accident when he took a tumble and dislocated his elbow, leading a mini riot in the ring - either way down as loss that was later comfortably avenged. And in his first defeat, in only his 5th fight he lost to Sobral - a 30 fight veteran who had fought at highest level. If you discount all that hes undefeated:loon:lol So now Im a bit of a loss and am tempted in a value punt rather than my original thoughts, time for a think I guess:eyes Still liking the beast Bader - powerful and top notch wrestling. really think this guy could end up being a genuine contender.

UFC match Previews Will Shogun's muay thai defeat Machida's karate? - UFC ? Shogun is a powerful, pressing muay thai striker and a BJJ black belt who will punch your head off or kick you on the ground until you quit or the referee saves you. That is Shogun. Before joining the UFC, Shogun's list of victims, and I don't use the word lightly, include Evangelista Santos, Akihiro Gono, Quinton "BA Baracus, I'm done fighting" Jackson, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Alistair Overeem (x2), Ricardo Arona, and Kevin Randleman. Many of these top level men were punished. This is the Shogun the UFC signed, this is the Shogun the UFC fans wanted and expected. What they got was something different.

Re: MMA Betting Thread Going to take advice this time - Ive had a good toy with it but cant back against Machida in the end. Also cant back him or Bader at the price. Had a proper scour to find any potential value and just cant call anything at the prices though I think Rothwell should prove a good test for Vezquez at 5/2. Either way no bet:(

Re: MMA Betting Thread Not the greatest pick I suppose but I can't see past Stevenson (1.50 Skybet).. I can see this being a boring 3 round blanket from Stevenson as Fisher gets overwhelmed by Stevenson's strength and wrestling.. was going to go for the decision method of victory but I could also see him locking in one of those chokes. Also, despite missing weight by 6lbs (!) I think Johnson is going to be simply too big for Yoshida (1.33 Skybet).. Machida, a perfect 15-0 should almost certainly have too much for Rua who hasn't beaten a top contender for years (Liddel was and is shot) whilst Machida has been giving Rashad Evans, Thiago Silva and Tito Ortiz a lesson. Seeing the way Rua gassed in a 3rd-er against a 60yr old Coleman I think he'll eventually get KO'd in this one (1.73 SportingBet).. The treble pays 3.14 @ SportingBet :hope

Re: MMA Betting Thread

Nice picks Pete:clap. I missed the weigh in but looking at it Johnson was a shoe in but 6lbs overweight is plain ridiculouus!! Poor card overall in my opinion....Bader dissappointed as well but Velasquez didnt!
Cheers, mate. To be honest I thought Rua was robbed, he had a flawless gameplan and caused substantial damage to Machida. The rematch has been all but confirmed so that'll be interesting. That deicision added to the Froch 'win' has left a bad taste in the mouth for me. Velasquez was awesome but he does seem to lack that ferocious one punch KO power, dodgy stoppage too although Rothwell was never going to win.

Re: MMA Betting Thread Silva v Sonnen A lot of talk about this one especially with Sonnen running his mouth off as usual stating that he will get Silva sacked and all in all being pretty disrespectful. Silva for his part has been in a couple of stinkers recently. White has warned Silva to pull his finger out with the threat of being on prelims or even released if he fights like he did in his last fight. I simply dont think Sonnen has the tools to beat Silva and has stated he will be putting the pressure on - standard for him. Considering that Sonnen will be in front of Silva and combining the talk he has been giving plus Danas words I believe Silva will be wanting to make a statement and will go for a Silva stoppage. Recommended bet Silva bt Sonnen KO/TKO/DQ 8/11 Paddy Power 5.5pts

Re: MMA Betting Thread Nelson v Dos Santos Theres no doubt that Dos Santos is seriously heavy handed and exciting to watch and though I think he will win (and want him to win as I think him matching against the winner of Lesnar/Velasquez would be compulsory viewing) I am going to side with Nelson puerely on an odds basis. Nelson has made marked improvement and although sparked by Arlovski has a decent chin and his cardio is vastly improved. Nelson himself can punch as well winning ko of the night in his last two fights. That said though surely Dos Santos holds a major advantage in the stand up but these are heavyweights and anything can happen. Hoping that if Nelson can get it to the ground he can use that whale like physique to smother and maybe gain that infamous crucifix with taps to the head of an undefended opponent. Not a bet with great confidence but at the odds worth a tickle imo. Recommended bets 1pt Neslon bt Dos Santos 3/1 Bet365 1pt Neslon bt Dos Santos by stoppage/DQ 11/2 Paddy Power

Re: MMA Betting Thread Hallman v Saunders Going to take a chance on the submission specialist (subbed Hughes twice within a minute) Hallman here. Hallman looked on his way to victory over Howard in his last fight before fading late and ko'd seconds from the end. Hallman has since been diagnosed with a wheat allergy which he claims was the reason for his fatigue. Either way Saunders is a dangerous opponent, especially from the clinch with serious knees. Recommended bet 1pt Hallman bt Saunders 21/10 Boyles
