Poker Experience?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys thought i'd start this off with the aim of finding out a bit more about the PL poker players. What game you play, how long been playing and where you play etc.. For myself ive been playing only a few months, a few of us get to together on Sunday nights and play for a few quid. We have just held our own Tournament which was a success, 12 players, 2 tables, top 3 from each table through to final table. We all put it just a tenner and all on the final table got £10 and the winner got £70. Doing it again in Oct.(Texas hold-em) As far as On-line poker goes i play the small multi-table tournaments at Bet365 and Hills, the best ive done so far is 28th out of 250. Still trying to win my first bit of prize money! Still learning but i think experience is the key and the more hands you play the more you pick up. Mainly concentrating on my own hands at the minute, trying to suss out what there worth etc. as far as reading other players and other strategy i think will come in time. Reading Skylansky's book at moment to try and understand more about the other facets of the game. He seems to favour the tight but aggressive game. Will be interested to know the best places to play on-line, i have Bet365, Hills, Laddys, VC, UK Betting, PartyPoker, Betfair and PokerStars all available but have only tried the first two. Any thoughts lads.

Re: Poker Experience? I only play the only game to play - no limit hold em :) Been playing games with mates for a few years now. Used to play mainly cash games but progressed on to tournys more recently. Started playing online about the time the thread below started and done alright out of it so far. Online I play 10 man cash games, occasionally 10 man single table tournys and been playing quite a few multis lately. Play at laddies, bet365 and betfair - mostly betfair recently.

Poker Experience? WOW! When did we get this new shiny place? Bugsys the plump decliner in the corner. I started playing poker about a year or so ago. Only ever played online and the game of choice....... No-Limit Hold'em. I taught myself from watching Late Night Poker on cable. I really started to enjoy watching it which suprised me because Poker isnt the kind of game that immediatly strikes you as a spectator sport. Anyway, this got me interested and after picking up the basics I decided to give it a whirl. I usually play whereever my money is but main accounts are with Betfair,W.Hills and Ladbrokes. Ive won a few $10 STT but best Ive come in a MTT is about 8th winning a couple of quid in a freeroll. I do ok on ring games as I can happily sit there and toss hands away until something good comes along. You dont have the pressure of the rising blinds. Usually play $.50-$1 games at W.Hills, joining in with the minimum $20. I find I usually play better when I start with the minimum amount as I know I cant afford to go looking at every hand which keeps my play tighter.

Poker experience I have been playing for about a year now. Got into it online last year whilst at uni, about a week after my housemate had the balls to start playing as we both thought we'd get whooped. begginers luck is key and i think it was my second multi table tourney i won!! there was abour 120 odd in it and it was a $3 buy in which gave me winnings of about £150!! i loved it!! since then played last year but only ever really single table tourneys as the multis are too tough. also like to play 5 man as top 2 places pay out which is 2/5 = 40% as opposed to 3 out of 10 for the 10 man tables 3/10 = 30%. started playing a bit for real as well when we found a couple of mates who loved it on the telly (sky poker masters was on at the time) and we ended up playing about 5 games in a week. needless to say there lack of experience, led me and my housemate to be up about £50 each by the end of the week, when most nights was £10 buy in plus the odd £5 top up if you'd gone out early. last time i played i went to a house where only 1 person had played before, got about 10 playable hands in 5 hours and got bullied out of them as i couldnt read the novices who were willing to pump all their dough in every time!! Love the game, dont play nearly enough, its texas hold em all the way. If you like the game a bit but not sure on playing etc. watch the film "Rounders". its quality!! :notworthy

Re: Poker experience I've been playing No Limit Texas Hold'em online for about 3 years but have never played in a real life tourney (one starts at the local casino at 9.00pm every Sunday night and I can never be arsed by then!). Won shedloads of single table tourneys and a number of MTT tourneys. My best performance was finishing 4th in a Bet365 tourney a few months back winning $1800 but I've won $400 - $600 quite a few times in small stake entry tourneys. Name of the game is patience followed by short sharp bursts of aggression!

Re: Poker experience I started playing the game in about 1998 / 1999 when the film Rounders was released in the USA. I was in Vegas at the time and stuck the film on Pay Per View in my room. Having always been someone who has loved a bet I was immediately transfixed by the fact that it was a skill game that still involved a wager. Whilst I didn't play the game in Vegas I did make a resolution to learn the game when I got home. On arriving back home I read a few books and entered tourneys in Nottingham. I placed in about 30% of my first 20 tourneys (but never won one) and was in profit by a considerable amount. My relationship then broke up in the year 2000 and I moved to Sutton Coldfield in the West Mids. It was a ball ache going up the M42 to Notts so I didn't play for about 6 months. Then a friend told me about a casino called the Rainbow in the centre of Birmingham that hosts the UK Champs. I joined there and started playing the tourneys. It was here that I learnt I was just an average player and that the Notts crowd I had been winning from were (by and large) soft touches. I learnt a lot at the Rainbow and placed in a good percentage of tourneys. I have only ever played one cash game face to face. Over the ast few months I have played at Laddies online. I am a few grand up even though I don't play often. I happen to agree with Wayne that patience is the key followed by short bursts of aggression. However the most important lesson to learn is about position. Where the button is happens to be the most important aspect of winning or losing (if you ask me). When you learn position - you can play! I will start a thread on this aspect of the game soon. :ok

Re: Poker experience Agree with that Gettin. Look forward to it mate. I vowed at the start of this year to read at least one Poker book to develop my game but still haven't got round to it. Any suggestions anyone? I particularly need to improve my understanding of the odds of hitting particular hands in relation to what's in the pot when deciding to bet. Know the basic ones but haven't a clue when it comes to odds of flushes, straights, etc when up against other hands.

Poker Experience? Alright guys just thought i'd pop my head in :) I've been playing for about 4yrs although the last 2yrs have been a bit more regular Play online at laddies and betfair. Have played a few tournaments but got nowhere near the finish. Just won my first single table tournament at betfair but it was only £5 entry. Its a start though. Other than that just play on the tables. Have played alot of games with friends over the past few years, usually once a week about 5 or 6 of us get together and play a few hands. Wouldn't mind reading a book about it to try and understand a bit more about it but haven't got round to it yet.

Poker Experience? Ive been playing for a year or so, all started from watching Late Night on C4 then the film rounders, used to play blackjack on a regular basis and made a little cash but as soon as I started playing poker became hooked. Best thing I did was by a book, the one at www.internettexasholdem.com/, its not NL but it was a good intro to stating hands, outs and pot odds. And obv practise makes perfect! Im on betfair most nights, same name, doing ok, mainly play the £20/£30 single tourneys. Never used any of the others sites, the laddies interface was abit offputting, maybe too used to betfairs.

Poker Experience? Cheers for the welcome Gett1n Abt the cash games dunno really, I started on the tourneys and just stayed with them, ive never actually played the cash tables!. Most nights I play im winning more than im losing so never really thought about changing, I like the fact that there is more action in the tourneys, im playing for enjoyment and the money so dont fancy the slow grind of the 1/2 limit cash games. I think there is definate money to be made whatever type of table you choose, its funny how you see the same names in the later stages of the same tourneys most nights. One of the reasons I dont play the lower limit tourneys is that so many people just call all the way to the river trying to hit the magic card, or just wet their pants and go all in everytime they see an Ace, I think you have to play at a limit that means something to people, losing a fiver means nothing but when its cost you twenty or thirty then people seem to play abit more properly, if there is a 'proper' way to play poker that is. I might give Laddies another try, it was a while ago I used it, plus the betfair/willhill/inter/ukbetting network (crypto-something??) crashes are starting to wind me up. If I do I'll give you a shout

I have to agree with you. It's the same on Laddies. Stick around and contribute to the forum Oskar - we can do with more players who know what they are talking about. You'll find some very strong players are members here :ok

Poker experience I began about two years ago, but its only in the last couple of months that I've played that much. Betting online is really what made me play more. Class game and a good buzz aslong as I keep it in check. No-Limit hold em, usually play on BF in the small tounaments like £10-20 games. I keep an eye out for you guys.

Poker Experience? Hi Guys, first post on here. :) I've not been playing that long, mainly just freerolls and small mtt's. Got hooked after watching it on various Sky channels and now even on 5. Only game i've played and really interested in is NL hold'em and I play at Betfair, Laddies, Hill's but mainly Bet365. Not really had much success but im getting the hang of it now and i'm not long finished a 6 hour long $1,000 freeroll on 365, finished 3/6220 for $87. Not much for 6 hours work but better than a kick in the rear end. Hopefully i'll cross paths with a few of you guys at the tables soon. :)

Re: Poker Experience? I have been playing poker for about 6 months now. I prefer live games and often attend Walsall grosvenor casino. will play in any of the games ranging from £10.00 to £100.00. Have got to the final table 3 times which is good. Must say though it is the usuall players that get to the final table regularly and win. I will win one day though. I play on Laddies and betfair. However I am not a fan of internet poker. I hate the crap draws that take place and do wonder if it's all a fix.

Re: Poker Experience? Hi Guys First post so bear with me. I started playing blackjack at the online casinos about a year ago but got bored and the offers have dried up so a week ago thought I would give online poker a try. I have played every night since and find its so addictive. I have been playing STT on Betfair maximum £5 didn't want to go higher until I feel my play justifies it. Is there a higher standard of play on the higher tables as some of the tournaments that I have played in are full of clowns that raise on any old crap? Now that I have broken my posting virginity you will probably see more posts in the poker forum from me.

Re: Poker Experience? Welcome to the Sports Bar Kirkie, there are some good players around so any questions you have dont hesitate to shout up. I play similar tournaments as you and often wondered the same thing. i think someone said that in general the standard is higher but you still get the clowns only they have more money to waste. I'm sure somone will have a better answer. Cheers

Re: Poker Experience? The buyins in blackpool mate range from a tenner to whatever you want I think, I have no idea what days are what competitions you will have to phone them and find out but there will be something to suit you and your mates. You have to join the casino 24hrs in advance of going (unless you already know a member) but you can do this over the phone I think nowadays as long as you bring ID on your first visit. As for the STT's well as you increase the stakes you do see the % of good players increase but you seem to get eejits on the net no matter how high you are playing :lol - do bear in mind that at a 5 dollar game half the table might be idiots but at a 500 dollar one only 1. Re: Poker Experience? Billy I used to play at the Gala Casino now and again a few years ago. To be honest the standard wasn't that good and I reached the final table more than any one player should. Furthermore I wasn't even that proficient back then. The old British Champ 'Taffy' played there in about 1998 / 1999. I thought he wasn't that shiit hot either. :eyes I fell out with the casino over Roulette when I called a neighbour bet (I had been calling for the last ten spins) - they didn't hear it and I got fcuked out of £350 - I resigned there and then and haven't played in that casino since. Shame really coz if they are all as bad at Poker as I remember there is some cash to be made.
