Re: UEFA Cup 1st Round 1st Leg 20/09 Larissa -v- Blackburn Rovers It maybe worth noting that this game is to be played at Volos NOT there usual ground at the Alkazar stadium as it does not come up to Uefa standards Chris Samba will not be on the plane for the UEFA Cup clash with Larissa FC. While the rest of the senior squad are due to depart for Greece tomorrow ahead of the first round first leg clash on Thursday night, the big defender will remain at base to rest up following the head injury he sustained against Chelsea at the weekend. Manager Mark Hughes explained: "We have a job to do in Greece, but we will have to manage without Chris which is a blow. "He put his hand up and was prepared to make the trip, but what with a long plane journey and the game likely to be played in high temperatures, I thought it was more sensible to leave him out of the travelling party. "The plan is that further rest will help him recover properly for Sunday's Premier League date with Portsmouth." Gamst Pedersen believe Rovers have a squad capable of winning silverware this season. Asked ahead of the UEFA Cup first round first leg clash with Larissa FC in Greece on Thursday whether he thought Rovers could win the UEFA Cup, the Norwegian star gave a very positive reply. "Of course we can, we are a good side, we've just drawn against Chelsea and Arsenal" "We will take one game at a time and hopefully we can go a long way. It is s tough competition this year, but we can do well in it I am sure of that."We are looking forward to the game on Thursday and to new challenges. Greece is far away, but we want to do well in the UEFA Cup and we've got a good chance." "There's a case of the unknown with Larissa," Hughes revealed. "We don't know a great deal about them and they haven't played a great deal of football either "So it's been difficult to get the information we normally have on our opponents, but we won't drop our guard. As a consequence of that we will make sure we get the job done. It's important we try to get ourselves into a position like we have done in the previous rounds. We just have to make sure we are in a decent position for the return leg. A draw is a good result. It doesn't matter what opposition you are up against. But ideally we would like to be in a winning position going into the return leg." 2007 Greek Cup winners Larissa AEL lifted the cup for their second time in their history after beating favourites Panathinaikos by a one goal margin. Two goals gave underdog AEL the Cup by stunning their opposition who were in the midst of a disappointing season both nationally and in Europe. So Sparky would be happy with a DRAW and at 3.60 with Bet365 so would I and finish them off down here. The last 6 games Blackburn have played has finished UNDER 2.5 goals which is 1.70 with Bet 365

Re: UEFA Cup 1st Round 1st Leg 20/09 Aberdeen v Dnipro Selection: Dnipro to win The odds are just far too tempting for me to ignore this match, so I've done a little bit of homework which has only convinced me further that it's worth backing Dnipro for this one. I'm Scottish, so have decent knowledge of Aberdeen, but if anyone has any opinions on Dnipro, I'd appreciate your thoughts ! Firstly, and I realise this is far from a solid reason for backing a side, but when the draw was made the general feeling from football pundits in Scotland seemed to be that Aberdeen had been given a very tough draw. Willie Miller, Aberdeens Director of Football, certainly seemed disappointed when interview shortly after the draw was made. Aberdeen have proven themselves to be a consistent side under Jimmy Calderwood. However, they have had a poor start to the season, only winning 1 game from 6. And their home record is 0 wins, one draw, 2 defeats, with 3 goals scored and 6 goals against them. Scottish sides, outside of the Old Firm, have been woeful in europe in recent times. It is certainly no surprise if they fall at the very early stages of european competitons, in fact it is pretty much expected. Aberdeen's record in europe in recent years is not impressive. In 2000/01, they were knocked out in the 2nd Preliminary round of the UEFA cup. In 2002/03 season, they were knocked out in the 1st round of the UEFA Cup. Aberdeen's top goalscorer this season has been Craig Brewster, the only player in the squad on 3 goals........but he has now moved to Inverness Caledonian Thistle to return to his post as manager. Striker Darren Mackie, Aberdeen's top goalscorer last season with 13 goals, is rated as doubtful for this match with a hamstring injury. Mackie has fantastic pace, and I would think he will be a big loss in europe, where pace can be so important. As for Dnipro, I don't know anything about them ! :unsure But I have done a brief bit of homework on them. They finished 4th in the Ukranian league last season. They are coming into this game after winning 3-0 in their last domestic game, and sit 2nd in the Ukranian league (I assume behind the impressive Shakhtar Donetsk). Dnipro's recent record in europe is as follows. 2003/04, they were knocked out in the 3rd round of the UEFA Cup. 2004/05, they were knocked out in the last 32 of the UEFA Cup. In the 2005/06 season, they were knocked out at the group stages of the UEFA Cup. In the previous round of this years UEFA Cup, they negotiated a tie with GKS Belchatow. GKS are a polish Premier league side, and led the Polish Premier League for most of last season, before eventually having to settle for 2nd place. So they must have been quite a useful side I would think. A worry for me when betting on teams from the likes of Russian and Ukraine is how these sides travel, but Dnipro's result in the last round encourages me. The first leg was in the Ukraine, and finished 1-1, but in the second leg, Dnipro travelled to Poland and won the match 4-2, to go through, 5-3 on aggreggate. EDIT: I would also add that I believe a big reason for Aberdeen's poor form this season has been the loss of Russell Anderson to Sunderland. He was their captain and had been at the club all of his career. Very popular and well respected, and will be a big loss on and off the field. He's a centre back, and was not only their best defender, but was the organiser and 'talker' at the back. Losing him is, I guess, a bit like Chelsea losing Terry or Liverpool losing Carragher. He was crucial to Aberdeen. And as I've already mentioned, you can see it already this season with the goals they are now leaking, 6 goals against them in 3 home games. Further edit: have just discovered that Scottish side Hibs faced Dnipro 2 years ago at this stage of the competition. I would rate that Hibs side ahead of the current Aberdeen side, especially in terms of being suited for european football. Hibs were beaten 5-1 on aggregate (0-0 at home, 5-1 in Ukraine). And another edit ! : The Daily Record is today (Thursday) reporting that Aberdeen captain Scott Severin is rated as 50/50 for this game. He's a big player for them, a cool head in this kind of game. Plays central midfield for Aberdeen, although he can also play at centre back. Even if he plays, if he's not 100% fit, it must be a serious concern for Aberdeen.

Re: UEFA Cup 1st Round 1st Leg 20/09 I like Dnipro too :hope. Aberdeen are not really convincing. What do you think of Zagreb vs Ajax ? Ajax form is not good away from home. I'm tempted to take Zagreb win. Any likely draw picks here? Zvezda win looks a good one too.

ReasoningTottenham will welcome this game as it will take there minds of the premiership. There are some players who need to start scoring and can see this being 4 v 0. Anorthosis I believe have come through the qualifiers but this should be the end of the road for them.

Re: UEFA Cup 1st Round 1st Leg 20/09 Here's my analysis and picks for Thursday UEFA Cup games. There's a lot of games on the board tomorrow so finding value is almost like "finding a needle in a hay stack" :)... ...anyway, I've lowered the value of my bets for tomorrow and here they are: B. Leverkusen-Leiria Leverkusen are the clear favourites and Leiria lack International experience but they're a decent side in the Portuguese league, have an excellent keeper, a usually solid defense and midfield and are fast on the counter attack. If they survive the 1st 30m (always crucial in these type of games) they can pull a good result in Germany. My pick: Leiria +1.5 AH (asian Handicap) Bayern Munich-Belenenses Similar analysis to the previous game with one only difference: Bayern is much better than Bayer. Still, Belenenses is also better and more experienced than Leiria and has a much more experienced coach in Jorge Jesus. They're usually solid in the back and in the middle and dangerous on the counter attack. Belenenses lost 1-0 to Real Madrid last August in the Teresa Herrera tournament with the only goal coming in injury time and in a mistake from the keeper. Recently they lost 1-0 at Sporting but gave them hell (missed a few chances with the result at 0-0 including one ball that hit the post). Again, if they can survive the 1st 30m they might keep it close. My pick: Belenenses +2 AH (asian Handicap) Getafe-Twente To be honest I couldn't believe the odds when I saw them and maybe I'm missing something here. Getafe is at the bottom of the Spanish league and Twente is having a good season so far in the Dutch league with a 2-2-0 record so I'm betting on them. My pick: Twente +0.5AH and +1 AH Paços Ferreira-Alkmaar Alkamaar is the favourite but it shouldn't be an easy game. P. Ferreira is a very tough team to break at home (they just spent nearly two years without a home defeat in the Portuguese league) but they lack International experience (its their 1st appearance). Anyhow, I'm betting they'll give Alkmaar a hard time. My pick: home Pk and +0.5AH I've picked 4 "dogs" for tomorrow, let's see how it goes. Good luck!

If Tottenham win the match by two goals staffy do u get your money back? Or is the bet a straight handicap as opposed to an asian handicap? If the above bet is an Asian handicap is the best value I've seen in a long time! I can honestly see Tottenham running amoke tomorrow nite. They beat Derby 4-0 earlier last month but I can honestly see 5 or 6-0 if they can get a goal inside the first 15mins tomorrow nite. I'm looking forward to watching it live on tele!

Re: UEFA Cup 1st Round 1st Leg 20/09 I will be taking the dogs of +1.5 goals at even money or better, but I will wait until close to game time to see where the teams stand. So far I have been successful in every game day except one...teams favored by 2 goals occasionally put together the massive 5-0, 6-0 win...but more often they play just well enough to win...and sometimes they even lose points. As of right now my plays would be: Hacken +2, +110 [@ Spartak Moscow] Belenenses +2, +115 [@ Bayern Munich] Erciyesspor +2, +116 [@ Atletico Madrid] Anort Famagusta +2, +114 [@ Tottenham] Metalist +1.5, +124 [@ Everton] BATE Borisov +2, +112 [@ Villareal] Close, but not quite there: Uniao Leiria +1.5, -106 [@ Leverkusen] For those of you unfamiliar with American pricing, +112 means a $100 bet would win $112...-106 means that you must risk $106 to win $100. Now, I don't know whether this is a strategy that works better in the early rounds when there are fewer big names. But let me just run these results by you, from the First Round, first leg, 2006, all games in which, probably, the home teams were favored big (I don't have last year's lines, but bear with me): Hertha Berlin 2, OB 2 Fenerbahce 2, Randers 1 Schalke 1, Nancy 0 AZ 3, Kayserispor 2 Eintracht 4, Brondby 0 Besiktas 2, Sofia 0 Marseille 1, Mlada Boleslav 0 Braga 2, Chievo 0 Here were all the wins by 3+ goals by home teams in the first round, first leg last year: Eintracht 4, Brondby 0 Basel 6, Rabotnicki 2 All the home wins by exactly 2 goals: Besiktas 2, CSKA Sofia 0 Braga 2, Chievo 0 Liberec 2, Crvena Zvezda 0 Partizan 4, Groningen 2 Livorno 2, Pasching 0 Now again, I don't have last year's lines, but I'd be willing to bet these home teams weren't favored by 1.5 or 2 goals. If I have time I'll go back another year, but without lines I don't really know who the big home favorites were. I would not be betting the big teams to win in aggregate by 3+ goals.

Re: UEFA Cup 1st Round 1st Leg 20/09 agree with Dnepro pick - aberdeen are woefull right now, beaten again on saturday at home to motherwell and toiling lowlyin the league - dnepro 2nd in ukrainian league ( which guessing means they will be above dynamo kiev ) Jimmy Calderwood likely going to play this cagey though - 0-1 dnepro my pick although going to have a large single bet @ 7/4 later today.

Re: UEFA Cup 1st Round 1st Leg 20/09

I like Dnipro too :hope. Aberdeen are not really convincing. What do you think of Zagreb vs Ajax ? Ajax form is not good away from home. I'm tempted to take Zagreb win. Any likely draw picks here? Zvezda win looks a good one too.
Being a dinamo supporter all my life, I can't see a dinamo loss here. I expect the plavi to win - worst outcome a draw. But luka modric said if we dont win our season is a complete failure. It will be a good test for dinamo to see how they compete with the elite teams because Cro league is pretty shit apart from hajduk. They showed against werder they belong in europe elite but are missing some ingredients, only if silva and corluka never left. But we have enough class to fill there spots. I expect a full stadium 33,000 to cheer us on. Im taking Dinamo win, CS 2:1 over 2.5 goals gl

Re: UEFA Cup 1st Round 1st Leg 20/09 Well, some good games in this round of UEFA cup, but generally very bad odds like always in these stages of UEFA cup. IM considering these bets: Tottenham- Anorthosis - Well I think there is not much doubt about this game. I saw tottenham this season in most of their games and they really dont play bad. Some world class strikers in Keane, Berbatov and Bent missed a lot of chances against Arsenal in their latest game. I really dont know anything about Anthorsis but let face the facts, team from cyprus just can not resist this attacking orientated tottenham, so my bet will be : Tottenham to win by 2 or more goals at 1.30 odds Bayern Munich - Belenenses - same reasoning as tottenham game, difference is only that i think that belenenses are considerably stronger team then anthorsis and are coming from good league. But all in all bayern should attack from the first minute to secure UEFA cup group stages early. So Im pretty confident Bayern will have a relatively easy job Bayern to win by 2 or more goals at 1.30 odds Sarajevo - Basel : Well I live in Sarajevo and I will try to provide some useful informations for you. Sarajevo came this far (for us,this is far) beating Marsaxloxx and Genk. Dont let results fool you becouse Sarajevo had loads of luck in their first game against genk (they won in Belgium 1:2) and their first goal came through a terrible mistake by Genks defence, second goal was pretty organized and good. In Sarajevo, we lost 0:1 to genk but could have lost by a lot more. Sarajevo lost clearly to Dinamo Kyev in 3rd round of CL qual. Now Sarajevo is doing bad in our domestic league. In first 5 games we have a 1-3-1 record wich is very bad and we could easily lose all of these games. Sarajevo just do not have creative players and will heavily rely on our wings and lone striker Admir Rascic. Stadium Kosevo (Asim Ferhatovic Hase stadium) will probably be almost full (i expect about 15- 20.000 supporters including myself). One more information, Sarajevo will field a defensive 4-5-1 formation and all long balls wil go to striker rascic who is a solid player and very strong (190cm ,85kg) but he is not european class. I wont write about Basel becouse I think you all know a lot about them. I recon 2.20 odds on Basel as pure GIFT and great value, but as I am Sarajevo fan for all my life i will take: Sarajevo -Basel x2 with odds about 1.30 just to be sure, but believe me Basel is too strong for us and 2.20 odds for away win is just astronomic high !

Re: UEFA Cup 1st Round 1st Leg 20/09 any opinion about game Villareal - BATE Borisov ? BATE Borisov has the lowest team ranking 1.540 while Villareal the highest 78.374 Villareal asian -2 looks tempting. The only question is how BATE will play in Spain defending with 10 men or trying to play more offensive. Any info about that game from Belarus friends?

Re: UEFA Cup 1st Round 1st Leg 20/09 Basel look very much the goods. Hammarby have had a mixed bag this season in Sweden but I put some money on them at home because I do believe they are good enough to come away with the win. Zenit at 1.74 at home is superb. They are in contention for the Russian Premier League. Only concern is that they are playing in the PL on Sunday in what could be a title defining match. So we'll see what happens, I still took a wager on them Bolton will draw I feel. It's no secret that their Premier League form is bad. They will happy for an away draw here and try to get the win at home where they have had their only win this season.

Re: UEFA Cup 1st Round 1st Leg 20/09

I will be taking the dogs of +1.5 goals at even money or better, but I will wait until close to game time to see where the teams stand.
Interesting perspective allthethings. Maybe, higher rated teams underestimate the "dogs". Also, if and when they score a goal they might tend to relax a bit... ...but, it's and interesting issue that also happens in other sports (people just love to blindly place their money on the favourites - human nature at work - and the bookies love them doing it). One thing I can garantee you, Braga's odd vs. Chievo (Italy) last year was either 0AH or, at the maximum, -0.5AH because they were not the clear favourites in that game (which I still remember). Good luck for tonight's games. Cheers.

Re: UEFA Cup 1st Round 1st Leg 20/09

Larissa -v- Blackburn Rovers It maybe worth noting that this game is to be played at Volos NOT there usual ground at the Alkazar stadium as it does not come up to Uefa standards Chris Samba will not be on the plane for the UEFA Cup clash with Larissa FC.
I agree. 1. Like Sparky said we will be satisfied with a draw. We can finish em at home later. 2. We are a small club struggling with our width to handle premier + europe at same time. And yes we play againsta portsmouth next sunday. 3. Our 6 last games has been under 2,5 Therefore I assume we will take the defensive/passive and less consuming tactic tonight. Like we did against Mypa at previous round also. And Mypa is way much shittier club than Larissa. Expekt gives 1,7 for under 2,5 and that's the best pick for this match IMHO.

Dyskobolia v Red Star (16:30 BST)2.993.252.66
Guests have some problems with scoring lately - theh've got two 0:0 draws in last twoleague matches... Hosts will be pretty defensively minded - "It would be great to win but the most important thing for us is to not to concede" - this are the words of couch Jacek Zieliński. I expect 0-1, maybe 0-0... I'll go for under 2,5 here (1.65 betgun) with much confidence... :cow

Re: UEFA Cup 1st Round 1st Leg 20/09 I think I understand what your asking, Your saying is it worth taking the win but cover it with a draw? possibly. reaqding between the line Hughes would be happy with a clean sheet and a draw. So maybe you can cover the 0-0, 1-0, 2-0 at a push. We should have buried MyPa but we struggled for goals and the last so many games have finished under 2.5 goals. We dont need to go all out attack which would leave us open at the back( more so now with Samba out) so Id expect a boring game midfield battle with Benni/Cruz pouncing late for a 1-0. When they come here then we can go all out and bury them 3-0 or so as we have a good record at home and with all our fans behind the team at home just getting the job done tonight ie 0-0, 1-0 is the most important thing to do. :hope Just watch us beat them tonight 6-0 :lol

Re: UEFA Cup 1st Round 1st Leg 20/09 3 games for me FC Sion - Galatasaray sion started with 3 wins in the swiss championship but didn´t win a round in since the good start. 8 rounds are played, 5th place (only 10 teams). 9:11 goals. It´s the worst home team so far with a 1-1-1 balance in swiss 1st division. The turkeys are one class above for me. 1st in the championship 4-1-0 balance, 14:2 goalbalance. Away with a 1-1-0 balance unbeaten. ---Istanbul to win Groningen - Florenz Groningen 12th place in Ehrendivision with only one win in the opening match versus Breda. two defeats (Graafschap,Utrecht) and a draw (Amsterdam) are the other rounds. Florenz sit in the 5th position in serie A with a win over Empoli and a draw versus AC Milan and Atalanta Bergamo. 1-2-0 with 6:4 goals. Florenz should be good enough to beat the dutchs. Ehrendivision isn´t the same quality than italia serie A. ---Florenz to win Dinamo Zagreb - Ajax Amsterdam Zagreb and Amsterdam lost in qualification. The dutch club versus Sparta Prague and Zagreb versus Werder bremen. I watched the both legs versus Bremen. A solid team with an excellent playmaker. But if Amsterdam hold Modric under controll Zagreb is only half as good as they will be with a "free" modric. It´s the key player for the eastern europeans. Ajax behind Rotterdam in championship on the second place.3-1-0 balance. Only a draw versus Groningen (2-2). Wins over Graafschap (1-8),Heerenveen (4-1) and Heracles but without the keyplayers. 3 of 4 finished with more than 2.5 goals.Zagreb is unbeaten in croatias first division with 29:5 goals and 8 victories. 4 of 8 with more than 2.5 goals. Zagreb have to make the game at home. ---over 2.5 goals

Re: UEFA Cup 1st Round 1st Leg 20/09

agree with Dnepro pick - aberdeen are woefull right now' date= beaten again on saturday at home to motherwell and toiling lowlyin the league - dnepro 2nd in ukrainian league ( which guessing means they will be above dynamo kiev ) Jimmy Calderwood likely going to play this cagey though - 0-1 dnepro my pick although going to have a large single bet @ 7/4 later today.
As to Dniepro I saw their game against GKS Belchatów. In the second leg in Belchatow they won comfortably 4:2. They main strength was upfront players, which created many opportunities to score. However Dniepro draw first game (1:1) and in second game they were loosing with Gks 2:1 after 30 minutes. Gks Belchatów is rather mediocre team (theirs second place in last season was their biggest success in history and it's main reason was not some great football but really awful form of other polish clubs. This season Gks in on 8th place 13 point behind leader), so I wouldn’t overrated this victory.

So my opinion (taking into account what was written about Aberdeen) is that Dniepro bet is valuable because it is strong team (in league they are on second place only behind Shahtar), which know how to score, however they surprisingly home draw with Gks and fact that Gks scored them three goals showed that Dniepro can be also unpredictable (like most of football matches :)

The second bet which is worth to try could be Groclin against Red Star. Groclin is solid polish team, but Red Star as a European quality team, should be to much for them. However couple of years ago small Groclin eliminated from UEFAManCity and Herta Berlin, but it was other squad stronger than present one.

Some information about current Red Star form would be very useful. Good luck

Re: UEFA Cup 1st Round 1st Leg 20/09 Thank you very much Carl !! I take the tie at @3.70 on Betfair and cover with 0-1 CS... I believe that if Larisa marks a goal, the English set will do the impossible thing to tie, and considering that Blackburn usually is this season an under team I believe that I do well. In any case I do not know if to also put to the 0-2. Thx !

Re: UEFA Cup 1st Round 1st Leg 20/09 Took Galatassaray for the reasons highlighted above and also think that Bordeaux away at Tampere have odds that are too high for their chances in this tie. I feel that Bordeaux will beat Tampere and at odds of around 1.8 surely that is good to take. The double for Gala and Bordeaux comes in at 3.56 roughly at Betfair Multiples, so I thought worth taking.

Re: UEFA Cup 1st Round 1st Leg 20/09 Is it truth that UEFA cup for AIK is not very important? I read that AIK will play one of the most important games of the season on Monday against Djurgården and it is the hottest derby in Sweden as well. Is this game much more important than uefa game with hapoel. Maybe they will give the rest for some important players?
