Re: Champions League (18-19 Sep) The best bet there for me has to be Shakhtar to beat Celtic. Now I'm a Rangers fan, so I'll try and follow this prediction up with some constructive points ! Shakhtar Donetsk's and Celtic's only previous encounters came in the first group phase of the 2004-05 Champions League. The Ukrainian side won their home match (3-0) through goals by the Brazilians Matuzalem (two) and Brandao. Two weeks later, Celtic beat Shakhtar Donetsk (1-0) through a goal by Alan Thompson. Anatoli Tymoschuk and Cosmin Barcauan (both Shakhtar) were red-carded in that match. Shakhtar Donetsk are unbeaten in their last five Champions League home matches. Their last home defeat was on 14 September 2004 against AC Milan (0-1). Celtic are yet to win their first CL away match. In 13 matches away from home, Celtic managed one draw and 12 defeats. They have scored 9 goals and conceded 31. Celtic lost 3 goals in each of their 3 away games in the group stages last season, losing to Man U 3-2, Benfica 3-0 and Copenhagen 3-1. So my bet is Shakhtar to win. I think it is also worth noting that in Celtic's 13 Champions League away games, they have lost by 2 or more goals in 6 of those matches. So Shakhtar to win by two or more goals, which I have seen priced at 10/3, also looks great value to me.

Re: Champions League (18-19 Sep)

Cheers for that Mr Ayebrox, Whats your opinion on Chelsea supposing Drogba's in?
The Celtic and Rangers games are the only two that I feel I could comment on in detail to be honest. I'm certainly no expert on the wider european game, and I'll be interested to read what others have to say on the other matches. Nevertheless, I still can't see past Chelsea for this one, which is hardly sticking my neck out ! The BBC is reporting that they will be without both Lampard and Drogba, and they have dropped 5 points in their last 2 Premiership matches. But still, Rosenberg have apparently not been firing on all cylinders in the early part of their domestic season, and at Stamford Bridge I can't see past a Chelsea win. Even without Lampard and Drogba, they still possess tremendous quality, and their record at home is excellent. Still, at that price for a Chelsea win, it's not a game that interests me greatly so they won't be featuring in my selections this week.

Re: Champions League (18-19 Sep) Thanx again Ayebrox and Cheers for the modesty, My picks are Liverpool and Real Madrid -1, -1.5 Its true the Merengues have been surprised by German sides in the Bernabeo and for Bremen success in the CL this year is crucial for their finances but with such a depleted squad they stand little chance when facing Real at their current form. Liverpool for me are such a power house with the new signings such as Torres and with Benitez at the helm, imo they can even manage an away win at Porto. Where Chelsea failed, Pool will succeed. Also Porto have nothing special against Liverpool as they did with Chelsea's Morinho their former boss.

Re: Champions League (18-19 Sep) Porto have never lost at home with English clubs so far. They were playing with 'big four' – Chelsea FC, Arsenal FC, Manchester United FC, Liverpool and all these matches has ended 0-0. It is obvious british teams have seroius problems with winning in Portugal for a long time. Now it is high time to change that. Both teams will be looking for a victory. Porto have drawn three of their first games in the last four editions CL and Liverpool last season's began with a 0-0 draw at PSV Eindhoven. IMO the game will be very close and tough. That's why probalby many punters are betting on under 2.5. But I think that in upcomming match we will see more than 2 goals. Porto and The Reds have skills and predispositions to play very offensive football and scores a lot of goals. Hard to predict which side will grab 3 points, the draw is very possible also. But after so many under there should be over. I know I'm not very convincing. over 2.5 5/10

Re: Champions League (18-19 Sep) 4 quick ones from me tonight Chelsea -2 AH @ 2.05 Pinnacle 4/10 Lets be honest there is a lot between the two sides. Unless Chelsea are seriously off the boil then they will claim a comfortable win here. My guess is 3-0 or 4-0, maybe more. Either way I’m pretty sure the -2 will be covered, refund at very worst. Real Madrid -1.25 AH @ 2.02 5/10 Real have been on fire this season and are sure to be one of the strongest sides in the CL this season. Bremen I don’t think are as much of a force that they used to be and could struggle in this campaign. They haven’t exactly started the domestic season that brilliantly and id be surprised to see them get anything here. Real should claim a comfortable victory IMO Shakhtar -0.5 AH @ 2.02 4/10 The Ukrainian side have been on fire domestically and will be fully confident coming into this match. Remember a trip to their stadium is never easy for any team, especially one like Celtic who are normally useless away from home in Europe. I’d be surprised to see the Scots get anything here in what will be a tough match. Definitely some nice odds on Shakhtar here and I’ll stake 4/10. Milan -1.25 AH @ 1.85 4/10 Its always a gamble betting on Milan on any big handicap but I think the defending champions will have a fairly easy night at home to Benfica. The visitors miss a few players to injury and it could make all the difference. The Italians are a very strong force at the San Siro and I think the minimum they will win by is a 1 goal margin.

Re: Champions League (18-19 Sep) Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum. Here's my analysis and bets for tomorrow's games: Porto-Liverpool A very tactical game is expected but Porto will be without International Brazilian keeper Helton, their best central defender Pedro Emanuel and the two only strikers they have (Adriano and Hélder Postiga), the only value in the team will be on wonder kid Quaresma and Argentinians Lucho Gonzales and Lizandro Lopez. In professional sports "you never know" but I don't see how they will keep Liverpool from scoring and how they will be able to score. The under could also be an option for this game but the odd is far too low to have value. My pick: Liverpool Pk Marseille-Besiktas No clear edge in my opinion, I pass. Chelsea-Rosenborg I like Chelsea but they are not "a scoring machine" (it's just not their style) and without Drogba and Lampard and do not see how they will score many goals against a physical and defensive Rosenborg side. My pick: Rosenborg +2 AH (Asian Handicap) Schalke-Valencia Schalke is the home team, usually very secure at the back and in midfield and has 4 draws in their last 5 games. Valencia is a better overall team but still seems to be searching for their best form yet. I see a draw as a very probable result here, so that's what I'll risk. My pick: draw Olympiakos-Lazio Greek teams are usually hard to beat at home in European competitions but Olympiakos has only one official game so far this season (0-0 away draw against Panathinaikos) and lost the services of Brazilian star Rivaldo to rivals AEK Athens. I expect them to still be looking for their best form. Lazio has 3 games in the Italian league so far and they're all draws. Again, I see good value in the draw here and that's what I'm taking. My pick: draw Real Madrid-W. Bremen I was in Madrid, on a business trip, last week and had the chance to speak to a few Real Madrid fans and they are still not 100% convinced about their coach Schuster (they are not sure if he's up to the job)... ...if they're not convinced why should the others, like me, be? Well, since the official season started they've been scoring a lot of goals and have the talent to do it. Bremen, on the other hand, seems like a different club this season with some heavy defeats so far. But "you never know"...we have to keep in mind that they gave Real a very hard time last year and have the talent to turn things around sooner or later. I'm playing it safe here (so I think). My pick: >2,5 goals AC Milan-Benfica Huummm...the hardest game for me to handicap ;). Milan are the clear favourites here, no doubt about that. They also seem to be "putting their chips" in the Champions League trying to be the 1st club to win it twice in a row (Ancelotti said it today and the fact that he didn't play Kaka over the weekend also proves it). Milan also seems to always start the season in the wrong foot and end it in a good note. On the other hand, Benfica ("my team" by the way) has been playing great football lately and ever since new coach and former Real Madrid (in the 80's) star José António Camacho took over (1 draw in the 1st game plus 3 consecutive victories, including a 0-1 away victory against FC Copenhagen, scoring 7 goals and not allowing a single one). 35 year old "wonder kid" :lol Rui Costa is playing at his best but Benfica will have to do without Brazilian International Luisão (has been out for a month now...) and recently injured Portuguese International midfielder Petit (got a ligament injury last Saturday and his absence is a big blow for tomorrow without a doubt). Hard game for Benfica but if they can survive the 1st 30m they can surelly pull a good result as they have the talent to do it in Rui Costa, Cardozo and Di Maria. My picks: away +1AH and +1.5 AH Shaktar Donetsk-Celtic Shaktar is a slight favourite at home and Celtic is aiming at improving their away record in the European competitions (they gave AC Milan a hard time at the end of last season and also just tied in Russia). Shaktar lost Brazilians Elano (to Manchester City) and Matusalem from last year's team but they spent a lot of money and hired Brazilian wonder kid William an Italian striker Lucarelli. It will be interesting to see how the more technical football of Shaktar will handle Celtic's more physical type of play and I think I'll risk a 3rd bet on a draw here (with one correct bet I'll get a small profit, with two draw bets correct I'll make good money, if I hit the three I'll make big bucks). My pick: draw Good luck!

McBet, If you want to play the "over" in the Liverpool-Porto game maybe a good&safer choice is to bet >2 in that case. One of the bookies I use (I'm new to this forum so I'm not sure if we're allowed to mention them) has it at 1.917 (European format). I'm still staying away from it, just mentioning another available choice. Good luck!

The "Liverpool Pk" bet seems to be no longer available at the bookies I use so I decided to take "Liverpool Pk and -0.5 AH". Good luck!

Re: Champions League (18-19 Sep) Rangers v Stuttgart: No bet Rangers have a mixed record at home in the Champions League, so it's hard to predict this match. First of all I'll admit I'm a Rangers fan, so I'll be assessing this match mainly from a Rangers perspective. In Rangers last season in the Champions League, 2 years ago, they reached the last 16 of the Champions League, losing out to Villareal on goal difference after two score draws. In the group stage, they were undefeated at home: - 3-2 win over Porto. End to end match, could have gone either way on the night - 0-0 draw with Artmedia Bratislava. A limited side that Rangers struggled to break down and should have beaten on the night. To be fair though, Artmedia did beat Porto in Portugal in that campaign (3-2, Porto's last defeat at home in the competition), and ultimately beat Porto to 3rd place and a UEFA Cup spot. - 1-1 with Inter Milan. Fair result on the night, although Inter had already qualified for the next stage. Rangers played Zeta of Montenegro in their 2nd round qualifier, and started off with an unconvincing 2-0 victory at home, before defeating them 1-0 away. In the 3rd round qualifier against Red Star Belgrade, Rangers were again unconvincing and won 1-0 with a late strike from Nacho Novo. In the away leg, Rangers played a defensive game but were comfortable enough and achieved a 0-0 result to qualify. Domestically, Rangers have had an impressive start to the season......up until last weekend. They have just been defeated 4-2 by Hearts at Tynecastle. Hearts are not the side they were 2 years ago, and to lose 4 goals to any non-Old Firm SPL side is very concerning. Up until the Hearts game, Rangers had a 100% winning record in the SPL, and had prided themselves on their solid defence, at home and abroad, so far this season. It's yet to be seen whether or not this defeat is just a blip or reason to be concerned. Rangers have used a 4-5-1 system in europe this season, and I expect they will use this sytem once again against Stuttgart. Rangers lack creativity, flair and pace but are a well organised, hard working side that, besides the Hearts game, has had a solid looking defence so far this season. They will probably play with two holding midfield players (Brahim Hemdani and Kevin Thomson) with Barry Ferguson in an advanced midfield role, and Steven Whittaker and Lee McCulloch out wide (although DeMarcus Beasley may start, as he has more pace and experience than Whittaker, and a good goalscoring record from his days at PSV in the Champions League) The fact that Ferguson has usually been a deep lying midfielder for the most part of his career, and the fact that Whittaker is a full back turned midfielder since signing for Rangers, illustrates how Rangers are a safety first outfit with no passengers, and solid hard working players all over the field........but the downside as I've said is a lack of flair, pace and creativity. The lone striker role will probably go to Jean Claude Darcheville. He's small, but built like a tank, and is very fast, hardworking and aggressive. A bit like Kenny Miller on steroids but with a good first touch ! ;) He's not a natural goalscorer, but he's a real pesk of a player and will no doubt ask questions of the Stuttgart defence. Rangers have played Stuttgart before in the Champions League, in the 2003/2004 season. Rangers won the home leg 2-1, and lost 1-0 in Germany, but I don't think too much can be read into those results. Two very different squads now. Although I would rate this Rangers side as better than the 2003 side, but then I'm sure Stuttgart have improved also. As a Rangers fan, I'm encourage by the fact that Stuttgart have lost their opening two domestic away games, scoring 1 and conceding 4. However, I'm clutching at straws here, and I'm not one to read too much into domestic results when assessing european matches. I think this is a game to stay clear of, but if pushed I would predict a draw. If there is to be a winner, I would lean towards it being Stuttgart, but Ibrox is an intimidating venue, and with the crowd behind them I think Rangers are capable of scraping a win here. But ultimately, no bet for me ! edit: additional information, taken from the BBC website: Rangers have not lost in 12 consecutive home matches in European competitions. Their last home defeat was on 15 December against Auxerre (0-2). They have kept clean-sheets in the last four European matches, and have drawn their last six Champions League games. The Champions League record for consecutive draws is seven and was set by AEK Athens between 17 September 2002 and 17 September 2003. Stuttgart have not won nor scored in their last three CL matches, but have won their last three European away games.

Last 7 if you include qualifying rounds :ok

Re: Champions League (18-19 Sep) REAL MADRID-WERDER BREMEN After a bit of a rocky start for Real in the Spanish Super Cup, they seem to have found their form now. They score plenty of goal and have a very strong and talented squad. For me Werder seem to have dropped a bit in quality this season, and could struggle. Real will want to play well in front of their home crowd, and I can only see one outcome here. Overs could be a good bet aswell. Score prediction: 3-1 Pick 1: Real Madrid -1.25 AH - 1,90 @ Expekt (3/10) MARSEILLE-BESIKTAS My "shocker" for the night. Marseille have been performing very strange in their league so far this season. They have only managed one win so far this season, and I'm not sure if they are ready for the CL. Besiktas may not be a top team in Europe but by all means, they're not a crap team either. With the high odds I feel it could be worth a shot betting on the away team to snatch a win here. Score prediction: 0-1 Pick 1: Besiktas - 4,35 @ Expekt (1/10) SHAKHTAR DONETSK-CELTIC Donetsk is one of those team that have quality when playing at home, but will likely not be a winner away from home. Many teams have it difficult playing at teams such as Shakhtar. The crowd and atmosphere will be different to what Celtic are normally used to. Last visit Celtic had there, they lost and they have been struggling on the road for some time in the CL. HW is a good bet with pretty good odds. Score prediction: 2-0 Pick 1: Shakhtar Donetsk - 1,90 @ Betsafe (3/10)

Re: Champions League (18-19 Sep) I fancy Liverpool to buck the trend of past English clubs and beat Porto tonite. I think Torres will start alongside either Kuyt and Crouch. Mascherano should come into the midfield also. Just hoping he gives Babel a start. Liverpool are around 2.30 on Betfair at the moment, but I think you'll get maybe 2.34 or 2.36 matched on it later. Chelsea should have way too much at home to Rosenborg. With Valencia and Schalke in the group also, I think 6points against Rosenborg is essential to ensure no slip ups. Drogba, Pizarro and Lampard are out however, the very impressive Wright-Phillips and Joe Cole should provide the ammunition for striker Shevchenko to score tonite. Also like Real Madrid as I believe the new coaach has them solid as opposed to previous years. Wesley Snedjer is class act.

Re: Champions League (18-19 Sep) Liverpool Liverpool have had agreat start to the season and should be primed for this. They have had some very good runs in the CL over the last few years and as always have started really well in the group games. The addition of Torres up front has rally benefited their forward line and he should be fresh for this after he and Gerrard were rested for most of the game on the weekend. Defensively they are very good and and provide little opportunities for the other side to score. Liverpool to win this and kick another good run in the CL Real Madrid -1.5 Domestically, Real Madrid have begun in impressive fashion and played some entertaining football. They will be confident of a comfortable victory judging by how poorly Bremen played to scrape through against Dinamo Zagreb. Their problems are compounded by the absence of injuries to several key players and Madrid should win this easily Milan over 2.5 Milan won this last year and will look to start the new CL season with a victory here. They rested several players like Kaka over the weekend and they should be good things to win this, however one glaring weakness that they have is a lack of pace in the backline. While Milan should score at least a couple of goals, Benfica have some speedy flankers who could cause some problems for the Milanese

Re: Champions League (18-19 Sep) Olympiakos(0)-Lazio(0) @ Bet365 1.75 Olympiakos will face Lazio in the opening game of Champions League for Group C. The game will take place without the supporters of the Greek team due to a punishment by UEFA for the last year’s game of Champions League against Roma. Maybe this will be for benefit of the Greek team, maybe no. The supporters of Olympiakos are very fanatic and this would push the team but last years the Greek team has bad results for Champions League at home. The expectations of Olympiakos are high as usual but the final results were very bad. One other important fact is that the Greek team has played only one official game for this season against Panathinaikos. This can be explained either positive or negative.

Lazio has a bad start in Serie A with three draws in three games and this is the big opportunity for Olympiakos. The opening game is very crucial for both team but more for the home team since the next two games are away against Real and Werder. If in this game Olympiakos will fail to get a positive result then it is more likely that it will collect probably zero points!!!

The coach of Olympiakos has as a primary concern to keep zero goals at the defense that’s why the system will be 4-5-1.

I think that Olympiakos has a better team than the previous years and this is the big opportunity that must not miss. I think that the odds are tasty and there is value especially when it is the opening game.

Re: Champions League (18-19 Sep) From a Scottish perspective I can't add any more than Ayebrox already had done. I'm taking Shakhtar too and leaving the Rangers one alone. My biggest concern in taking Shakhtar to win, and I can't change it now as the money is placed, is that Celtic are a different team now. They still only have that single point away from home in the group stages but in their last two outings in Europe on the road they have drawn against Milan and Spartak Moscow in games they were heavily tipped to lose. Maybe now they are not such a stick on to lose. I'm finding tonight's football hard. I've seen Milan twice this season and they've not looked at their best- against Fiorentina and Siena. In the latter they were really disappointing and like Juve look to be short on pace. They usually though perform when needed but since this is the opening match and Benfica are going well at the moment I think I might take a draw in this one or Benfica with a handicap. Real Madrid look the best bet tonight as they seem to be motoring along nicely at the minute. I watched Bremen get ripped apart on Friday by Dortmund so think there could be goals in this one- I'm tempted to take over 3.5 at small stakes. Real Madrid have goals in that just now which should compliment what looked to me like a very dodgy Bremen defence the other night. Apart from Chelsea the others look too tight to call. Marseille just cannot be trusted from he start they have had to the season. Liverpool are one of the best sides for me when it comes to this competition but I can't see them winning here so might take a draw on that one given how strong Porto are at home. The other games involving Schalke and Olympiakos are no bets for me.
