Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Cup 2007

It's not a "massive boost" but it's a good enough replacement.
Come on Kev, he was one of the stars of the world cup and is a terrific replacement for Hall. I'd be chuffed if I was on Kent like you are :cheers.

Come on Kev' date=' he was one of the stars of the world cup and is a terrific replacement for Hall. I'm not saying I'm not pleased but all that's happened is a decent bowler has replaced a very good all rounder.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Cup 2007 decent?? If he's a decent bowler I'd like to see a good one :loon Seriously though, I take your point about the balance of the side but I think Malinga will be extremely hard to score off on finals day without losing wickets.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Cup 2007 Well there was a danger of Hall going and there being no replacement so in any case it's a big boost for your (adopted) team I think!! We'll see on Saturday though and I'm really lookign forward to it!

That's right. That's why I'm pleased he's there. I just hope he's at it from ball 1. I'm also looking forward to it. The quest for the hat trick is just over 48 hours away and there will be a nice PL gathering at Edgbaston to see it :dude

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Cup 2007 Ok Finals day is less than 36hrs away. I'm off to Brum via Bangor races tomorrow so I'm going to do my bets now. There's a few markets I'm waiting to be priced up though so hopefully I'll get internet access at some point tomorrow and will post some more up but if not I'll get someone else to post them up for me.

As with last year I'll do 3 posts. This one will contain outright thoughts and some finals day outright bets and the 2 which follow this will have a semi final each on it. Right. Outright thoughts. Well I'm not having another bet on the actual winner. I've already backed Kent and I'm reasonably confident they will win this still. Lots have been spoken about Lancashire and Sussex and that's fine but I think Kent are a very underrated side and if Lasith Malinga slings the stumps down straight away I don't think they'll get beat. At 7/2 still I can't put anyone off there. Ok onto the finals day bets. Couple of small ones to begin with. 1pt H.Marshall Top Finals Day Batsman 20/1 Stan James Hamish Marshall is having a terrific Twenty20 so far for the Gloucestershire Gladiators and is a big price for someone who has a one day international century to his name and indeed a century in this years Twenty20. Hamish Marshall has 191 runs in this year's competition from his 5 innings at an average of 47.75 which is very good. In order for him to top score on finals day we'll probably need Gloucestershire to beat Lancashire but should that happen the 20/1 on the Kiwi will become incredible value and it's something I'm willing to take a punt on. 1pt S.Cook Top Finals Day Wicket Taker 20/1 Stan James Simon Cook has 16 wickets in this years competition which is only better by Surrey's Chris Schofield who won't be appearing at finals day. Therefore it's a bit silly of Stan James to price the Kent medium pacer at 20/1 to take the most wickets at Edgbaston. His 16 wickets have come at an average of 14.56 so he's bowling nicely. Of course for this bet to have a chance Kent will need to win the semi final but I don't think that's impossible and if Cook gets 2 matches to bowl in there won't be many taking more wickets than he does. 4pts G.Cross to beat M.Prior/G.Jones/S.Adshead 15/8 Totesport Gareth Cross has really made a name for himself in Twenty20 this year and I believe he'll be the top scorer among the wicket keepers on finals day. 1st of all let's get rid of Jones and Adshead, both could only have 1 match and equally both bat so low down for their side that they might not actually get to the crease whether their side plays 1 match or 2. So that leaves us with a hit and miss Matt Prior, potentially tired after his England exertions but not really firing with the bat anyway. Gareth Cross will probably bat at 5 for Lancashire and he can biff a big ball. Cross played brilliantly when Lancashire were here in the quarter finals and I think he'll outscore the other keepers on finals day. 2pts Final Result - Kent to beat Gloucestershire 6/1 Blue Square Both these sides are very much outsiders for their semi finals but I don't think it's impossible for both to win those semi finals. This is a huge stage for many of the domestic cricketers who don't play international cricket and Sussex and Lancashire both have a lot of young guys in their side who will be under pressure to win here. We only have to look into the recent past to see Lancashire struggling on the big occasion. They completely ballsed up chasing 134 in the semi final of this here 3 years ago and then got battered by Somerset in the Twenty20 final a year later. Then in last years C&G Trophy final, again chasing a low score, they didn't really ever threaten it so this Lancashire side don't have good recent big match form. Sussex are slightly better but the likes of Luke Wright, Chris Nash and Carl Hopkinson will all be feeling it in front of a 20,000 sellout at Edgbaston. They have a tough game against Kent who have nothing to lose and it could just be both Lancashire and Sussex blow up and allow Kent and Gloucester into the final where I believe the Spitfires will be too strong.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Cup 2007 Right then. Semi final 1. Lancashire vs Gloucestershire.

Lancashire 1.51.51.571.571.51.531.531.571.571.531.531.531.571.6
Gloucestershire 2.52.52.252.252.52.372.372.252.252.372.372.52.252.56
I'm initially going with 3 for this one. 10pts Gloucestershire to beat Lancashire 6/4 BetDirect Lancashire and Gloucestershire meet for the 1st ever time in Twenty20 here and it promises to be an intriguing contest. Neither side have really ever fulfilled their potential in Twenty20 and the losers of this game will be a very disappointed set of individuals. Lancashire come here at full strength. Importantly for them they have a fit to bowl and bat Andrew Flintoff along with Jimmy Anderson who has been passed clear to play by the ECB. Sajid Mahmood is also fit so I'll include that as a government health warning for anyone in the Birmingham area on Finals day. Mutiah Muralitharan is also around for Lancashire who will be hoping their top order of Loye, Law, Hodge and Flintoff can score big runs. With the ball though of course Murali is a threat but in recent times the threat from everybody else isn't what it once was. Perhaps Anderson and Flintoff will change that. Gloucestershire also come here at full strength. Jon Lewis leads the side for only the 2nd time this season in this competition and he's one of the major players for the Gladiators. Carl Greenidge has been excellent with the ball regularly bowling economical spells and getting the opposition worrying immediately. With the bat, Hamish Marshall is going along nicely in all forms of cricket and Lancashire could well end up ruing Warwickshire and Derbyshire playing Spearman and Gidman into form. This match will depend on 2 sections of it. Gloucestershire bowling with the new ball and Murali's 4 overs. Whoever wins those periods will win this match. If Gloucestershire make inroads into this batting lineup they are right in the game. And if they can play Murali out with as little damage as is possible that will be a big plus. Lancashire haven't done it on the big occasion for a while which is something this Gloucestershire side have and I really do feel Gloucestershire are too heavily underestimated here. 10pts Lancashire Most 6s 10/11 Bet365 Of the 4 lineup's on show on finals day, Lancashire have quite clearly the most destructive batting side. Loye, Law, Hodge, Flintoff, Cross - they can all clear the ropes on a regular basis. Gloucestershire have a few who can clear the ropes too but nowhere near to the extent that the Lancashire side can. Gloucestershire's gameplan maybe hit 4s and run hard as Lancashire do have a good bowling attack here while I'd imagine the Lightning players to try and stamp their authority and go aerial - it's the only way they know how and at the end of this 1st semi final, I'm sure Lancashire will have cleared the ropes more than Gloucestershire. Totesport aren't daft. They go 8/15 Lancashire but we'll happily take Bet365's 10/11. 5pts ew A.Gidman Top Gloucestershire Batsman 5/1 Boylesports (1/4 1,2,3) Alex Gidman is a solid batsman who I believe is Gloucester's best batsman. He comes into this in really good form too having hit 111 in Gloucester's Championship match with Derbyshire which came hot on the heels of a terrific 88 off 74 balls against Warwickshire in the Pro40 last week. At his best he can take any attack apart and by batting at number 4, maybe even number 3 here, he'll have plenty of time to build an innings and top score. He plays spin and seam equally as well and with his tail up I'm sure he'll be right in there when it comes to settled the Gladiators top scorer in this semi final.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Cup 2007 Ok the 2nd semi final. Sussex vs Kent

Sussex1.611.661.661.611.661.661.661.661.611.721.721.721.661.76
Kent2.22.12.12.22.12.12.12.12.2222.12.12.24
4 for me initially here. 10pts Kent to beat Sussex 6/5 Betfred Kent and Sussex meet in the 2nd semi final having both come further than they've ever been before in this competition. The 2 sides have already met in the group phase and Sussex won by 7 wickets. Kent will be out for revenge now when it counts most of all. Kent arrive at Edgbaston having had the week off, the only one of the 4 sides to have had that luxury. In that time they've signed Lasith Malinga to replace the injured Andrew Hall in a move which could turn out to be inspirational. With the bat young Joe Denly and his skipper Rob Key are having excellent seasons in all form of the game and they are well supported by Darren Stevens, Matt Walker and Martin van Jaarsveld. Accompanying Malinga with the ball is Simon Cook, Ryan McLaren and Yasir Arafat with James Tredwell and Darren Stevens handy options for Key. Sussex come here full of expectation. They have Matt Prior in their squad after he was allowed to play by England. He'll be an important cog with the bat along with the likes of Chris Adams and Murray Goodwin. However it's ex Leicester player Luke Wright who has stolen the show with the bat and he's the competition's top run scorer this year. With the ball, the spin duo of Saqlain Mushtaq and Mushtaq Ahmed will be hard to face on a wearing pitch and Kirtley and Rana Naved are experienced Twenty20 bowlers. Kent are playing good one day cricket right now and their break could have done them the world of good while Sussex were battling hard in Liverpool. This Sussex side is a good one but Surrey showed in the groups that if Luke Wright doesn't perform and the top order struggle there's a soft centre in this Sharks side. Kent have the personnel to expose that and I'll take the Spitfires to fly into the final. 10pts Sussex Most 6s 19/20 Bet365 Sussex have some big hitting batsmen in their side. Chris Nash, Murray Goodwin, Matt Prior, Chris Adams, Luke Wright and even Rana Naved can hit the ball a long way and I'd expect to see a few 6's from them here. Kent tend to go about their work differently. They look to accumulate their runs then have a little aerial dart towards the end. Totesport are as low as 8/11 on Sussex to hit the most 6s which will be a winner more often than not so we'll accept Bet365's 19/20. 10pts R.Key to beat M.van Jaarsveld Evs Bet365 Rob Key has had a great Twenty20 having hit 196 runs at an average of 65.33. He's really stepped up to the mark as a 1 day batsman and comes into this off the back of a terrific 100 in the Pro40 against Derbyshire. Martin van Jaarsveld has 137 runs in this competition at an average of 27.40. Key has hit 3 half centuries in the competition while van Jaarsveld's top score is only 42. Key will open the innings so he'll have a head start on the South African when he comes to the crease and I think in a matchup here Evs is terrific value on the England international. 5pts C.Adams Top Sussex Bat 4/1 Boylesports (1/4 1,2,3) Chris Adams is a passionate guy who leads from the front in this Sussex side. He has over 200 runs to his name in the competition this year at an average of over 40 so is in good touch. He arrives here after 2 ok innings against Lancashire and Worcestershire recently and on his day can destroy an attack. He'll keep Rob Key on his toes by playing the sweep and reverse sweep a lot and at 37 years of age he knows when to play the big shot and when to find the gaps. He's never far away from top scoring for Sussex and although I can't stand the guy, I think he'll go very close to top scoring for the Sharks again here.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Cup 2007 For me the best day of the domestic season. Lancashire come in as favourites and have a team of star names but so often that has been the case before only for them to blow it and I could easily see them doing that again against 3 teams coming into the day with form and 3 well disciplined and professional line ups. In their first game they take on Gloucesterershire and even though Gloucestershire are possibly a touch big, I do see Lancashire as the most likely winners of that game as I feel their batting especially and the power of it could take apart a potential weak bowling attack. Where I think they will struggle is in the likely final against Kent or Sussex. That semi looks very tight to call. Sussex come into the game on the back of some strong form and Luke Wright has been a relevation and is in the England 30. Adams, Prior and Goodwin add to the batting whilst the bowling looks all conquering with Rana Naved, Kirtley (superb at the death which could be crucial) and the two classy spinners although Saqlain I am not sure has taken to 20 20 yet. Kent have picked up big style in one day cricket this year. Led by Key, with the likes of Van Jaarsveld, Stevens, Jones and some big hitters down the order and the bowling does not look to bad either with Malinga added. However if I had a slight preference it would be for Sussex as i especially think the loss of Hall and Morkel is very important. For me the winners of that which I think will be Sussex will take the final. Carrying on the Sussex theme I like the look of Wright to be top runscorer on the day @ 14. He has been the player of the tournament scoring runs a plenty and at some strike rate and he is in England's 30 and could well be in South Africa. For top bowler I fancy Kirtley. I was very impressed with his death bowling in particular in the quarters and the experienced campiagner @ 8 can take the wickets towards Sussex's charge to the trophy. I hope all those going enjoy it.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Cup 2007 I'm going to go with my original feeling for a Lancashire v Sussex final, the double with Stan James pays out at 2.65. Sussex should have the more trouble of the two especially with Malinga, but I feel their spinners and the death bowling of Kirtley might be enough to see them through. Lancashire I think will win outright.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Cup 2007 Good write up! Maybe these two are undercooked on the spreads: BUY GO Jones of Kent perf @ 38 at 2pts BUY Lancs 6's @ 9 at 7pts These are 'all-day', so could be buggered by Gloucs v Sussex final! ps. at Twickenham: England 34 : Wales 11. Back England on the fixed odds handicap of around 14. ;)

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Cup 2007 Well we now know the final, Gloucestershire v Kent. Lancs mucked it up even before the final admittedly against a professional outfit who performed well in the field and Key played a blinder to steer Kent home in the other semi. Kev's predictions look in a good state.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Cup 2007 i would stick to the bowling side now. coz dont see a very big score happening. Teams need to know that 160+ is a very good score. and not to try for 180-200. maybe with wickets in hand you might reach any score in the last 4-5 overs. i dont se a clear fav in this finals. will stick to who ever bowls first and then hedge it all on the team who gets gets the ball in their hand later.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Cup 2007 Kent win. They made it tighter than it ought to be just like the quarters and the semis but did enough in the end. I do wonder what would have happened if Lewis had maneouvered the bowling changes to make sure it was him and not Greenidge bowling the last over. Top calls Kev. Marshall nearly came off as well.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Cup 2007 Spitfires la la la, Spitfires la la la :D :nana:nana:nana:cow:cow:cow:nana:nana:nana. Cheers all. Absolutely delighted with that. Think Kent thoroughly deserved to win but I wish they wouldn't make it so difficult. We nearly had a connery twice!! Ok, semi final 1 we cashed in on Gloucestershire winning but Lancashire didn't win the 6s, they didn't really do anything really! Gidman didn't bat so we was +5 for the 1st semi. Semi final 2 wasn't as good. Kent won and Key thrashed van Jaarsveld. Adams and Sussex 6s lost. +2 for that semi. For the outrights, well Gidman wasn't Gloucestershire's top batsman overall so that was a loser so was -5 there and a further -2 for the finals day top bat and bowler although I thought Marshall was going to sneak that at one stage. However Cross top scored among the wicket keepers for +7.5 there and then +12 for the final result. Kent winning meant another 50pts so for the outstanding outrights we collected +62.5pts today so all in all for the day I was +69.5pts which meant I ended up with a tournament profit of 68.05pts. Kent winning means I've nailed the Twenty20 outright 3 years in a row :loon. Just a quick word about the day. Want to thank Matt, Jeffers, KoTP and my mate Paul who without them being there it wouldn't have been the superb day it was. Cheers guys, hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did. Hopefully next year at the Rose Bowl, Hampshire, Lancashire and Leicestershire can all make finals day :ok

I was going to suggest an Elton John Greatest Hits CD but thought that might be pushing it. :lol;) Glad you all had a good day out' date=' hope you didn't drink the place dry. :ok[/quote'] I didn't because I drunk too much the night before :$, so stuck to a couple of pints in between matches and the odd one during the games. We was in the family stand though where alcohol wasn't allowed but that wasn't going to stop Matt, Jeffers and KoTP :lol:lol.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Cup 2007 Fair play Kev. Wouldn't have called Kent at the start of the tournament so hats off to you. Managed to sneak an outright bet on them before finals day as they looked far and away the strongest side going into it. Plus I think the break did us a world of good. In a way I wish I wasn't at the finals so I could've followed your Kent v Gloucs final tip but I wouldn't change that for the world! Will definitely follow you in next year's competition!
