Rennes vs Auxerre

The postponement of Premier League and Championship matches this weekend due to the death of Her Majesty the Queen has led me to venture out into the European heartlands to cover other leagues. Ligue 1 is my focus here with the game between Rennes and Auxerre taking centre stage. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:05pm BST on Sunday afternoon from the Roazhon Park in Rennes.

Rennes come into this game having experienced a mixed beginning to their league campaign. Bruno Genesio's men sit in 9th position in the top flight of French football having won 2, drawn 2, and lost 2 of their opening 6 league games. Les Rennais have only lost 1 of their last 6 competitive games so they're still showing themselves to be a hard team to beat. Victories in their last two home games with the team scoring 5 goals across those matches has also put the disappointment of the opening weekend league game 1-0 home loss to Lorient firmly in the past. Question marks remain over the defensive displays with the team still yet to keep a clean sheet this season although the fact they have only conceded 1 goal in 6 of their 7 matches played across all competitions this season shows they're not far off having a solid foundation at the back.

Auxerre earned promotion back to Ligue 1 after finishing 3rd in Ligue 2 and coming up through the play-offs. Head coach Jean-Marc Furlan has witnessed his team hold their own at this level so far with the team in 12th place in the league having picked up 2 wins, 1 draw, and 3 defeats. The disconcerting thing for the Burgundy-based club is that they have lost back-to-back league matches now. The optimists will contest that they weren't expected to win either game with Lyon and Marseille both very efficient opposition. The pessimists will claim the honeymoon period is over and the team is now facing the hard reality of life at this level. The hope is that Auxerre have managed to score in all except one of their matches so far this campaign and if you are finding the back of the net then you always have a chance in games.

The last time these two sides met in the league was back in 2012 when the game ended in a 1-1 draw. It's fair to say that both of these two clubs have been on very different journeys since then. Rennes will be looking to keep their domestic form solid whilst also fighting on the Europa League front. Auxerre will simply be looking to survive. Can the away side take advantage of the tired legs of the home team? Or are we still early enough in the season that fixture congestion hasn't hit yet? I'm going to back Rennes to get the win but Auxerre will likely give them a scare.

Monaco vs Lyon

After four winless rounds, Monaco finally managed to book a win in the French top flight. They celebrated a narrow 1-0 victory against Nice on the road before beating Red Star with the same scoreline in the Europa League action. It has been seldom in recent games that Monaco has shown defensive steel. It will be a concern for them that Monaco has been scored against in five of their previous six matches, leaking 13 goals on the way. Ahead of this clash, Monaco has not won at home in their last three league matches. Myron Boadu (Foot Injury) and Kevin Volland (Sprained Ankle) will not be taking part for Monaco manager Philippe Clement.

After a losing effort in their last game against FC Lorient in Ligue 1 action, Lyon will be hoping to turn things around here. The numbers tell their own story, and Lyon has been scored against in five of their last six matches, conceding seven goals overall. Defensively, Lyon has seen their frailties exposed. Ahead of this meeting, Lyon hasn’t won away from home in the past two matches in the league. Due to a mostly available group, there’s just one fitness problem for the Lyon gaffer Peter Bosz to be concerned about. Julian Pollersbeck (Knee Surgery) won’t be in action.

Full-Time Winner Odds & Prediction

It is going to be a tight clash, and it can easily go either way. We won’t be surprised if these two teams split points on Sunday evening.

Goals Market Prediction

Both sides have been pretty efficient lately, and Monaco failed to keep its net intact on the home ground this season. That’s why we think both teams will manage to score in this clash.

Correct score 1:1 @ 7.00
