Panathinaikos vs AEK Athens

The Greek Super League is a European league that we've not covered too much down the years but with the Premier League and Championship matches postponed this weekend I thought it was a good opportunity to take a look at one of the games this round. It's Panathinaikos versus AEK Athens in this 7:30pm BST kick-off on Sunday afternoon from the Apostolos Nikolaides Stadium in Athens.

Panathinaikos have enjoyed an encouraging start to their league season with the club winning their opening 3 league matches keeping a clean sheet in each one. Yes, this is their first real test so we'll get a better idea of where Ivan Jovanovic's team are after this game but, on the domestic front, it could not have started much better with the team sitting proudly on top of the Greek top flight. The Greens' European performances left a disappointing feeling in the air with the team exiting the Europa Conference League at the 3rd Qualifying Round stage after a 3-1 aggregate defeat to Slavia Prague. That premature elimination from Europe means there is a lot of pressure on Jovanovic to now deliver in the league but he does also have the advantage of no midweek fixtures to contend with.

AEK Athens are entering a season where the club want to put the disappointment of last season's failure to qualify for European competition behind them. A disrupted campaign that saw three managers in charge across the campaign ended in under-achievement and with a new manager in Matias Almeyda at the helm there is optimism that the Yellow-Blacks can bounce back this year. An overhaul of playing staff has, understandably, left the club feeling like this is a process that could require some time. 2 wins and 1 loss from the opening 3 league matches is far from a disaster but the 1-0 loss at home to Volos is not necessarily a result a club like AEK should be enduring but Almeyda does have this period of grace to get his players to settle in and gel.

This is a game that is already vitally important for both teams. Panathinaikos will be keen to show their fans that this positive start isn't just flattering to deceive displays against less capable sides. AEK Athens know that a loss here would see them fall further down the table and face an uphill challenge to get into European qualification contention already. I do feel that Panathinaikos are in a slightly better and more settled place right now. AEK have shown glimpses of what they can be this season but the consistency is still lacking.
