Feyenoord vs Sparta Rotterdam

The Dutch Eredivisie has been slightly neglected from our preview eyes down the years but with the postponement of games in the Premier League and Championship I felt it was a good opportunity to take a look at a game from the top flight of Netherlands football this weekend. What better fixture to take in than the Rotterdam derby between Feyenoord and Sparta Rotterdam in a 6pm BST kick-off on Sunday evening from De Kuip?

Feyenoord come into this game as clear favourites having started their season unbeaten in their opening 5 league matches with 4 wins and 1 draw. Manager Arne Slot will be looking to build on last season's epic campaign that saw the team finish 3rd in the league and reach the final of the Europa Conference League where they lost 1-0 to Italian Serie A club Roma. This season's stint in the same European competition hasn't started too well after a 4-2 loss away to Lazio in the opening group stage game. Still, league form is what matters here. The club on the Meuse have scored at least 4 goals in three of their league matches and have also managed to keep a clean sheet in three league games. The team are also yet to concede a goal in their two home league matches so far this season. It's also just 1 defeat from their last 9 home league games stretching back into last season.

Sparta Rotterdam face a daunting task in order to try and earn the bragging rights against their local rivals. The Castle Lords are in 8th position in the league after 2 wins, 1 draw, and 2 losses from their 5 league matches. Head coach Maurice Steijn will be satisfied with that as he continues to look to take the club forward after replacing Henk Fraser at the club in April and a 14th placed league finish last season. The club come into this game off the back of two clean sheets victories in the league giving the club three clean sheets from their 5 league encounters so far. Steijn has worked hard to bring in fresh blood to bolster the squad this season and there are signs that the additions are looking very shrewd. Norwegian front man Tobias Lauritsen, who arrived from Odds BK for just €450,000 in the summer, has scored 3 goals in his last 2 league outings.

This will be a true test of attack versus defence here. Feyenoord have scored at least two goals in 8 of their last 9 home matches played against Sparta Rotterdam and have bagged 14 goals in 5 league games this season already. Sparta Rotterdam have shown defensive resilience this season but also have a sting in their tail having scored in 3 of their last 4 away league games. I think Feyenoord should sneak this but it could be a ding dong battle.
