AFCON 2022 Last 16 Predictions > Jan 23rd - 26th

The 2022 Africa Cup of Nations has now reached the last 16 stage and we've already witnessed some big shocks. The two biggest are undoubtedly the group stage eliminations of both Algeria and Ghana. Who saw that coming?! This is why I love this tournament because we will see the likes of either Burkina Faso or Gabon, Guinea or Gambia, and Mali or Equatorial Guinea reach the Quarter-Finals. The fact we also have the likes of Comoros, Cape Verde, and Malawi in the tournament still is brilliant.

Anyway, it's looking like Cameroon, Senegal, and Nigeria are the teams to back at the moment but that could all change. Hit us with your predictions for these upcoming knockout matches. I can't wait! :drums

Usual tactic for international tournement knockout rounds - play the draw.

27/88 KO matches since 2003 have ended all square; 3 of the 8 L16 matches last time out too.

The draw in the Burkina Faso, Nigeria and Guinea matches in a trixie to kick things off for me.

Will probably do the Tuesday/ Wednesday ,matches in a yankee.

Swerving Cameroon v Comoros due to the Comoros camp having covid.

Had been thinking about this but expecting the average and/or typical draw odds to perhaps be shorter in this comp.

Went for a small stakes trixie on those 3 games going to pens (excuse the degree of "mid-timing" involved as the first game ends level after minutes)!

Guinea will face Gambia at Stade Omnisports de Bafoussam.

Guinea
Guinea have already qualified, but a loss to Zimbabwe in the last round has taken a toll on their morale. They had two clean sheets in the group stage, including a 0-0 draw with Senegal, and the team defended well.

Gambia
Gambia did very well in the group stage, drawing against Mali and beating Tunisia, both of which surprised many. And they have scored in all three games, conceding only one goal, attacking and defending well.

Verdict:
Our feeling is that Gambia have it in them to find the back of the net against this Guinea lineup, however it is unlikely to be enough to avoid defeat. We are anticipating a 2-1 advantage for Guinea by the conclusion of the game. Definitely a tough call.

Pick: 1

Must admit i was expecting sub 2/1 quotes, managed to get 2/1, 11/5 and 2/1 - not that it mattered in the end

Senegal vs Cape Verde

Jan 25 2022, 11:59

Senegal
Senegal, currently ranked 20th in the world, has not performed well in his last three matches, with 1 win and 2 draws. Most of the players at the Africa Cup of Nations play in the top five leagues, led by Liverpool star Mane.

Cape Verde
With one win, one draw and one loss in their previous three matches, Cape Verde were lucky to qualify as third place. Their players are all from European clubs, but not from the top five. The team has conceded goals in the last 2 games and is not defending very well.

Verdict:
The difference in power between the two sides was big, and Cape Verde lacked of stars. The 1X2 first odds is 1.57-3.60-6.50, which means support the home team. Senegal should win this game.

Senegal VS Cape Verde
Pick: 1

Ivory Coast vs Egypt

Building on the previous result, the Ivory Coast will hope for the same after a 3:1 victory over Algeria in the African Cup of Nations. Despite a hiccup against minnows Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast showed its best performance against Algeria. That one secured them the top spot in the group, ahead of Equatorial  Guinea. Patrice Bommel’s Ivory Coast has hit the back of the net a total of 11 times during its last six outings. The comparative sum of goals scored against them in those matches is 5. Nicolas Pepe is a guy who shows his football skills, played a phenomenal game against Algeria, scored a beautiful goal, and then recorded one assist. Patrice Beaumelle has all the players available for this match.

Egypt enters this match after a 1:0 victory in the African Cup of Nations with the eclipse of Sudan in the last game. Although they opened the tournament with a narrow 1:0 defeat against Nigeria, they managed to celebrate in the following two rounds. A series of effective displays by Egyptian defenders showed that the number of goals they have conceded is four in the previous six clashes. In the same period, their strikers managed to score nine. Mohamed Salah is the biggest star of the African Cup, and the opposing defenders have no solution to stop the football wizard. On the other hand, Liverpool needs to cope with his and Mane’s absences while in the tournament. Another interesting player who should be mentioned is midfielder Mohamed Elneny, who plays great at Arsenal. Carlos Queiroz also has all the players available for this match.

Full-Time Winner Odds & Prediction

Ivory Coast was efficient in the group stage; they scored as many as six goals, which is a phenomenal statistic, unlike other national teams. On the other hand, Egypt plays a more disciplined football and mostly relies on Mohamed Salah. Overall, Ivory Coast is a slight favorite in this encounter, and we expect them to win it.

Goals Market Prediction

Egypt has been very tight in the back, and their previous five games stayed under a 1.5 margin. Although Ivory Coast has great attacking potential, they should also be cautious in this match. Therefore, we don’t expect to see more than two goals in total.

Ivory Coast to Win @ 2.30

Under 2.5 FT @ 1.45

Correct score 1:0 @ 5.50
