William Hill doesn't 'understand' decimal odds

So went to a bookies this morning (thought I'd try a non-online bet), found my odds on their terminal (1.8), filled the slip with the odds, and went to the cashier. Was informed they didn't 'understand' decimal odds so they looked it up and substituted it with fractional - 8/11.

So in reality I got 1.73.

I should not have bet at all, but did. Should have insisted on the 1.8 but didn't.. I left shaking my head. Do bookies not let you use decimal odds on betting slips? How can you work in a bookies and not know decimal odds? Maybe this is normal? Maybe I should stick to online...

Depends what they looked up! If they looked up 1.8 to convert it to fractional then they did it wrong and it should have obviously been 4/5. If they looked up the current price of the selection and it was displayed as 8/11 then either the price had been cut since you looked it up or there was a contradiction and you could have pushed for the odds on the terminal. Not sure if you could have just bet via the terminal and cut out the muddled middle man?

Must admit I've long since binned off betting shops so don't know how the land lies in terms of odds format. I'm sure that, years ago, Hills and/or other firms had started offering coupons with decimal odds as an option.

Maybe they should have looked up the bet on the Will HIll website and got the odds from there.
