Blackpool vs Peterborough

League One comes at us with a few tasty matches this week. I'm turning my attention to the ELO ratings this weekend to pick out my tips for the games. It's Blackpool versus Peterborough in a 3pm GMT kick-off this Saturday afternoon at Bloomfield Road. The home side are statistically the favourites but is this a wise decision given recent results of both teams?

Blackpool come into this match in 15th place but they do have a number of games in hand on the teams around them. Head coach Neil Critchley has seen his team lose just 1 of their last 4 league games but that defeat did come in their most recent league outing in a 2-0 loss away to mid-table Ipswich. The Tangerines have only played once at home in the league since 15th December but are now unbeaten on home turf in their last 6 league matches. It's also 5 clean sheets from those last 6 home league games so Critchley will certainly be pleased with his side's defensive displays on that sandy pitch.

Peterborough are a team gunning for the automatic promotion spots with the team currently placed in 3rd position and only outside the top two due to an inferior goal difference. Darren Ferguson is the man in charge for the Posh and his side head into this match off the back of back-to-back wins at home to Crewe and Ipswich. Unfortunately, away form isn't as good for the promotion chasers. Just 1 win from their last 7 away league games shows how it's becoming a bit of a monkey on their shoulder. The most recent away trip in the league saw the team lose 2-0 away to lowly-placed Shrewsbury.

At face value, it almost seems mad backing a mid-table side such as Blackpool to beat high-flying Peterborough but when you dig into the respective home and away form of the two sides you can see why the ELO ratings favour a home victory. I'm not sure I am feeling comfortable enough to back a home win outright but I certainly feel a draw no bet option is worth backing.

Cambridge United vs Southend

If you're looking for as close to a sure thing as you can find in the Football League matches this weekend then you need look no further than the clash between 1st placed and 23rd place in the League Two schedule when league leaders Cambridge United host relegation battlers Southend in a 3pm GMT kick-off this Saturday afternoon at the Abbey Stadium.

Cambridge United are starting to find their stride in the fourth tier of English football. Mark Bonner's men are top of the pile and after the double boost of Bonner winning the League Two Manager of the Month award and Wes Hoolahan winning the League Two Player of the Month award the feel good factor around the club keeps getting stronger. The team did lose 4-1 away to Salford in their last league game but home form remains in tact with the club having gone unbeaten in their last 5 home league matches. The club also boasts the second best away form in the division with only Carlisle earning more points on home turf so far this season.

Southend pulled off a shock 1-0 win away to Newport County in midweek but before that game it was 4 league defeats in a row for Mark Molesley's men. The Shrimpers are second from bottom but now only denied being positioned outside the relegation spots due to their inferior goal difference. The fact that Barrow have two league games in hand means the team will need to try and bag another win as soon as possible to avoid being cut a drift again. Unfortunately, Southend have only won 2 of their 13 away league matches played so far this season.

I have to say that I feel Cambridge United could be like a wounded animal in this game. Their defeat against Salford was unexpected and will no doubt have angered them. Bonner will be looking for an immediate reaction and this is the exact type of fixture they'd have loved to have. Southend might have grabbed only their 2nd away league win of the season but Newport County are at sixes and sevens right now. A more organised and relentless Cambridge United could be a completely different proposition.
