I'll be getting previews of the two Cardiff games up as Mick McCarthy begins his reign as Bluebirds manager against his hometown club and his first ever club that he managed. In last England FA Cup, they were beaten by Bristol City with 0:3, and they ended their previous winless record (2d-2l) by beating Huddersfield Town with 1:0 in last away game. But their home forms are still poor. Watford Watford are the relegated team from Premier League. After 25 rounds of the new season, they rank 3rd with 46 points. Also, they achieved consecutive 3 wins since they beat Stoke City with 2:1 in last away game. Betting Verdict: Millwall just got 2W-2D-6L in past 10 h2h games. The 1X2 odd is 3.29-3.01-2.32, the away win return is lower so that is tending to Watford. So Watford will be trustworthy in this round. In this season, they got 11W-3D-10L after 24 rounds, ranking 9th with 36 points. And they just got 3 draws since the League. In last England FA Cup, they beat Millwall with 3:0 as away side and advanced into next stage, being in high morale. Huddersfield Town Huddersfield Town are in good home forms for they got 22 points in last 13 home games, while they just won 2 out of last 12 away games. They suffered consecutive 4 losses since they were b eaten by Millwall with 0:1 in last home game, being in low morale. StevieDay1983 Posted January 27, 2021 Author Share Posted January 27, 2021 Barnsley vs Cardiff OK, so the usual dour and pessimistic Steve has now been replaced by the positive and more optimistic Steve! Gone are the horrid days of Neil Harris and his ultra-conservative and blame-shifting football. Mick McCarthy and his no messing about philosophy is here to stay! It's Barnsley versus Cardiff in the Championship for this 7pm GMT kick-off at Oakwell and bloody hell I'm excited! Barnsley deserve all the praise in the world right now. Valerien Ismael has done wonders with the limited resources at his disposal but he's managed to guide the Tykes to 12th in the table with an outside chance of gate crashing the play-offs if they can put a decent run of results together. It's been 3 losses in a row for the Yorkshire club but those three games have been three of the toughest they'll face against the top three teams in the division. Before those games they'd won 5 of their previous 6 league matches. The fans are loving it and if they can recover from this slump then they still have a productive campaign to save. Cardiff finally did the honourable thing and got rid of Harris last week. He was swiftly replaced by the experienced McCarthy who, along with Neil Warnock, is one of the managers I've always wanted to manage the Bluebirds at this level. The rumour is that he's on a 6-month contract to steady the ship and that's fine. I'd even take a few years of "Big Mick" to let us calm things down and rebuild. The demise of Harris has been sad to see. When he had no pressure last season and had us playing more free-flowing football it was all encouraging. Unfortunately, he was given some money in the summer to boost the squad and even though the signings, on paper, were solid he failed to address key areas (right back and central midfield) and also clearly felt the pressure of expectation so had us playing a lot more negatively this season. His refusal to accept responsibility and constantly throwing players under the bus wore thin. He had to go. It's now 6 defeats in a row in all competitions and we're in freefall down in 16th place and just 9 points off the relegation zone. I'm very interested to see how McCarthy sets us up for this game. When we appointed him I had both a Wolves friend and Ipswich friend who told me we'll hardly ever lose a game at home under him. I know this to be true because I've always backed McCarthy teams to win at home in my accumulators. Far more often than not they've repaid my faith. However, this game is away. I am still quietly optimistic we can grind out a draw and that, at the very least, will end this awful run of losses we're on and we can then look forward to taking games to teams at home. Kept a bang average Ipswich side stable in the division for years on a limited budget. No surprise they got relegated and haven't come back after he left. I won't change my opinion of him based on short stint in Cyprus that lasted less than a dozen games. He's exactly what we need as a short term appointment right now. StevieDay1983 Posted January 30, 2021 Author Share Posted January 30, 2021 Cardiff vs Millwall The Championship is back this weekend and I'm looking forward to see how Cardiff do in their first home game under Mick McCarthy against McCarthy's former club Millwall at the Cardiff City Stadium in a 3pm GMT kick-off on Saturday afternoon. Both of these two sides are battling at the wrong end of the table so a win is much-needed here but does either team have what it takes to get all 3 points? Cardiff did well to come back from 2-0 down away to Barnsley in midweek to draw 2-2. It was a point that I predicted we would get and in the end we might have been unfortunate to not take all 3 points. McCarthy has got a team littered with injuries and players lacking confidence so the point and the manner in how it came about could not have been better timed. The Bluebirds are still down in 15th place and it's 6 league games without a win but that draw stopped the rot of 5 straight league defeats. It was also great to see us battle back and show the fight needed to come back from behind. It's a sense of spirit and determination we've not seen at all this season. Millwall come into this game in a similar situation to their hosts. Gary Rowett hasn't quite progressed in the way he would have hoped this season. The Lions are in 16th place but have been restricted by the 12 league games they have drawn this season. If even half of those draws had been converted into victories then Rowett's side would be in the play-off places. Just 1 win from their last 6 league matches has their current form in a poor way but when you extend that and see they've only won 2 of their last 17 league games then you can understand why the fans are becoming concerned. I'm quietly optimistic about this one. The legend goes that McCarthy hardly ever loses home matches as a manager. That's obviously not a flawless record and without the fans at games it doesn't quite have the impact home advantage usually does. One factor stands out here that makes me cautious. The draw factor. Each of the last 6 meetings between these two have ended in a draw with 3 of the last 4 encounters ending 1-1. Add this to Millwall's reputation as draw specialists this season and with both teams out-of-form then all signs point towards another draw.
