Cardiff vs Barnsley

The midweek Championship games are making it a tough schedule to keep up with at the moment but here I am doing my best to share my thoughts on how I think my team Cardiff will cope at home against an impressive Barnsley side in a 7:45pm GMT kick-off on Tuesday night at the Cardiff City Stadium. To put it bluntly, I'm not feeling overly optimistic!

Cardiff are a prime example of how form can be changed so dramatically after just one result. Before Saturday's dramatic 3-2 loss away to QPR, the Bluebirds had gone 5 league games undefeated. However, the defeat on the weekend now means that Neil Harris's side are without a win in 4 league matches and sitting down in 17th place. Life moves fast in the Championship. The fan forums are packed with rumours of discontent behind the scenes. Harris came out and dug some of the players out in his post-match press conference on the weekend and you can kind of feel a disconnection not only between the fans and Harris (that's always been there, to be fair) but also now Harris and the players. To add to the speculation of rifts behind the scenes there's also the fact we've only won 1 of our last 4 league games at home.

Barnsley fans were undoubtedly concerned when former manager Gerhard Struber departed the club for New York Red Bulls. The Austrian kept the club up last season in dramatic fashion and they were still a side that were tough to beat. The appointment of former LASK gaffer Valerien Ismael was a controversial one but the Frenchman has hit the ground running at Oakwell with the club now unbeaten in 3 league games under his reign with the most recent result the most impressive as a 1-0 win over Watford. The Tykes still have a lot to prove on the road having only taken 2 points from their 4 away league matches so far but they're a team gaining in confidence with every passing game with the team now in 15th position.

I'm concerned about things at Cardiff right now. Harris wasn't the most popular appointment and has never really bought into the atmosphere of the club. He's quite a sterile manager but after last season's play-off push it appeared he'd won over a lot of the fans. Unfortunately, an inability to sign a much-needed central midfielder and failure to address our creativity issues (even when we have had Sheyi Ojo, Lee Tomlin, and Harry Wilson involved) are now showing in the results and performances. I think Barnsley should feel we are there for the taking tonight. It's worth backing the away side to get something here.

Well, that was a pleasant surprise! Wasn't expecting that performance from the lads! Harris actually switched up our tactics to move to a 4-4-2 and put us on the front foot. There were still some issues present but it's clear that our players much prefer being given a bit more freedom to play. It'll be interesting to see if he keeps that approach for Friday's game against Bristol City.
