RB Leipzig vs PSG

The first match of the 2019/20 Champions League Semi-Finals is scheduled for Tuesday night at 8pm BST when Bundesliga side RB Leipzig play Ligue 1 team PSG at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon. Both teams are hoping to make history by reaching their first ever Champions League Final where they will play the winners from the Lyon versus Bayern Munich match.

RB Leipzig have shown that life goes on without star striker Timo Werner. Anybody that doubted the team could continue to score goals without their German talisman were silenced sufficiently with the 2-1 win over a defensively astute Atletico Madrid in the previous round. Head coach Julian Nagelsmann has seen his team score in 13 of their 15 Champions League matches this season but their defence remains questionable having only kept three clean sheets. It's now just 1 defeat in their last 17 matches across all competitions so they're hitting form at just the right time.

PSG will feel this is their time. The Parisians have had their eye on this crown jewel ever since the money from Qatar Sports Investments came in back in 2011 with the owners spending in excess of £1 billion on transfers over the past decade. The team has now scored in 33 successive Champions League matches and with the fire power of the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, and Mauro Icardi, it's no surprise they are scoring goals at will. Neymar is the man to watch right now having scored 16 goals in 20 appearances in Ligue 1 and the Champions League with 3 goals coming in his last 4 appearances in this competition. However, like RB Leipzig, defence is an issue with PSG conceding in 17 of their last 20 Champions League knockout ties. Head coach Thomas Tuchel can be confident his team have what it takes to progress knowing his side have won all three of their previous knockout ties in this competition against German opposition.

Well, the statistics and facts say it all. These are two teams that certainly know where the goal is yet continue to experience their frailties at the back. You compare the two sets of squads and there isn't really a match. RB Leipzig can be proud of their season so far but they're up against the brute force of a European super power here that boasts arguably the most potent strike force in world football. This game is PSG's to lose.

Lyon vs Bayern Munich

The second Semi-Final of the 2019/20 Champions League is set for an 8pm BST kick-off tonight when Ligue 1 underdogs Lyon will look to cause one of the biggest upsets in recent competition history as they play Bundesliga champions and tournament favourites Bayern Munich at the Estadio Jose Alvalade. PSG await the winners after their dominant 3-0 win over RB Leipzig last night.

Lyon might have finished 7th in Ligue 1 as last season was cancelled but head coach Rudi Garcia has seen his team take some big scalps in this competition already. Les Gones have already put the likes of RB Leipzig, Benfica, Juventus, and Manchester City to the sword. We've falsely written them off too many times already to count them out here. They have scored in 8 of their last 9 matches in this competition and talented midfielder Houssem Aouar has proven the creative engine with 8 assists in his 14 matches in the Champions League.

Bayern Munich are understandably the big time favourites coming into this game having destroyed everyone standing in their path since Hans-Dieter Flick took over the reigns. The German league winners have now won 19 matches in a row in all competitions and have a 100% record in this year's competition so far. The club have become just the 2nd team in history to win their first 9 matches in the Champions League after Barcelona managed a similar feat in 2002/03. Bayern have also managed to score 3 goals in 44% of their matches in this competition showing how strong their attacking prowess is this season in Europe. This will be their 12th appearance in the competition's Semi-Final stage with only Real Madrid reaching this stage more times (13). However, the German side have failed to progress from their last four appearances at this stage.

On paper, this is only heading one way. Bayern Munich appear destined to reach the showpiece of European football and the little engine that could in the form of Lyon are the only thing stopping them from getting there. The French side have pulled off some fantastic results this season but as much as I'd love to see an upset here I can't see them stopping Bayern. It might be a thriller with twists and turns but I think the Germans will progress.
