Corona Tennis Off-Season News

Seeing that we still have some time, I reckon that it's a good idea to collect the best of the best here, either on daily or somewhat less regular basis. So, for today:

Strangest news - Djokovic apparently says that he doesn't want to get vaccinated right from the start, even if that would mean not playing tennis. Positive news - The top 3 guys want to make a fund to give something back to the lower ranked players, but there are some big questions hanging over that. Source:

Right, in the meantime, Safin comes out of retirement to tell us that Bill Gates was planning this all along as a part of his master plan. That really is a lot of fun, but one hopes that he doesn't have as much reach as he's once had anymore.

The French Open might still be very much on, however, and even the Laver Cup has already made way for it. image.png

I imagine he's skeptical because of the global nature of tennis and all the movement across the world that goes with it. It's one thing for global competitions to resume, it's quite another for 'regional' competitions to restart like football in individual countries. It should be a lot 'safer' for sport to resume within particular geographical confines as movement of people is greatly reduced. Anyway, let's see what happens :hope

Yeah, that's exactly what I meant by different logistics. That said, there's plenty of room for creativity, so I'm sure that we could see some action. Moving people around is difficult, so what about having several back-to-back tournaments in one big place or at least one country? The US has plenty of scope in that direction, as does Spain (hard to imagine), Germany (easy to imagine), China (politically problematic), and Australia (very easy to imagine).

The schedule definitely needs to be looked at if distancing measures are here to stay. Before all this players were darting all over the world depending on their individual schedules - maybe a solution of sorts would be blocks of tourneys in just one country at any time and a roster of players that could take part in those tourneys. Plenty of problems with an idea like that, not least that it wouldn't be inclusive and by definition a lot of players would miss out altogether if only a select number of players could play, or if there was some sort of tiered system of tourneys like ATP and Challenger but with no scope for movement between the two - but at least it could be a start.
