StevieDay1983
Cercle Brugge vs Gent The Belgian First Division is narrowing down to the business end of things with just a few games left until the play-offs begin. My preview this week covers two sides that will be competing in different play-off competitions in Cercle Brugge and Gent. The action kicks off at 7pm GMT from the Jan Breydel Stadium in Bruges with both teams still having plenty to play for. Cercle Brugge were looking dead and buried just three league games ago. On just 11 points after 24 games played it seemed impossible to understand how Bernd Storck's side could recover and avoid relegation to the second tier. However, fast forward three league matches and the team that looked dead and gone have won all three matches to take their season tally to 20 points and move off the bottom of the table. It's an astonishing turnaround in fortunes. Gent come into this game as the favourites but considering they're in 2nd place and 35 points ahead of their opponents before kick-off you'd be forgiven for being confused as to why they are priced so long to win. The recent upturn in form of their hosts has thrown a spanner into proceedings. That shouldn't take anything away from the recent form of Jess Thorup's side though. The club are unbeaten in their last 8 league games having won 6 of those matches. They have scored 20 goals and conceded just 7 in that period. They also exited the Europa League with a spirited 2-1 aggregate loss to Roma so they now have 100% focus on the league. I totally understand why Cercle Brugge are being backed slightly more than they have been by the bookies but let's not take our eye off the ball here. They welcome a Gent side that are in devastating form right now. The Cercle victories came against sides either struggling for form or low down in the table. This is a whole different level of opposition and I think the price on an away win is worth backing.
