It's an all-Premier League clash between Aston Villa and Manchester City at Wembley Stadium on Sunday. StevieDay1983 Posted February 28, 2020 Author Share Posted February 28, 2020 Aston Villa vs Manchester City OK, so this EFL Cup Final between Aston Villa and Manchester City that kicks off this Sunday afternoon at 4:30pm GMT from Wembley might not capture the imagination but we have to go through it anyway and try to find some value somewhere. I mean, let's face it, everyone knows who the favourites are and what the most likely outcome is but are we all writing the underdogs off too easily? Aston Villa fans will be delighted that their club has reached the EFL Cup Final against all the odds. It gives their club a chance to win their first piece of major silverware since they last won this competition back in 1995/96. Dean Smith's men might be staring the threat of relegation from the Premier League in the face just one place and 1 point outside the bottom three but they've navigated their way past Crewe, Brighton, Wolves, Liverpool, and Leicester to reach this stage. So who cares about the three losses in the league on the trot and the FA Cup 3rd Round elimination to Championship side Fulham. It's all about this game now. Manchester City haven't exactly had a season to remember so far. The league title appears lost to Liverpool. The FA Cup and Champions League are still on. This could be yet another piece of silver added to Pep and City's expanding cabinet. However, the dark cloud of that European ban hangs over the club ominously. Guardiola was also given the hard news that influential centre back Aymeric Laporte is set for another month on the sidelines. Is that the bit of luck Villa fans are hoping would happen? City have so far progressed past Preston, Southampton, Oxford, and Manchester United to reach this game. The recent head-to-head record does not read well for Villa fans at all. It's now 8 matches in all competitions without a win over City. That last victory came in a 3-2 win in the league back on 28th September, 2013. Recent results have been awful too with an aggregate score over the last four matches of 17-1 in City's favour including a 6-1 win for City at Villa back in January. These final matches are rarely completely one-sided affairs and I think Laporte's injury is a blow for City. I still think City will win but I'm thinking it'll be a much more narrower win than people are expecting.
