Mainz vs Schalke

The Bundesliga is fast turning into one of the most exciting leagues in European football with so much to compete for at all ends of the table. It does make it more difficult to predict but this is certainly one of the most enjoyable seasons in recent memory. This week, I'm looking at the finely balanced tie between Mainz and Schalke that's due to kick-off at 5pm GMT on Sunday at the Opel Arena.

Mainz find themselves firmly embroiled in a relegation battle this season. Rouven Schroder's men are in 15th place and 4 points above the drop zone but it's getting stressful down there. The 3-1 win away to Hertha Berlin last week was further proof that the club seems to be able to get the wins when they need them to keep their head above water. Unfortunately, only once this season have they followed up a win without a defeat. The team comes into this game having lost 7 of their 10 home league matches this season and having won more points on their travels than at their own stadium.

Schalke were a team that was a Champions League regular not that long ago. David Wagner is looking to bring the good times back to the Veltins-Arena and with the team now in 6th place and currently occupying a Europa League qualification spot they are a step closer to making that dream a reality. They remain 7 points off the pace of the Champions League qualification places but they are still in the mix. Just 1 defeat in their last 7 league games is encouraging form. Particularly because that solitary loss was away to Bayern Munich. However, they're struggling to turn draws into wins having drawn 4 of their last 6 league games.

I'm usually reluctant to back an away side and that's especially the case when the home team are involved in a relegation fight. I'm not sure why but I think the value of Schalke for the win combined with the awful home form of Mainz makes this very tempting. Sometimes teams can struggle with the pressure of playing in front of their home fans. This can be the case when they're not doing very well too and I think that's the case for Mainz.
