From today until the end of the English season I'll be setting out Excel Solver selections for correct scores from the English leagues and putting a notional £10 bet on each one (that will run into one hellofa stake total by the end).
Experience this season has shown that the National league is not a happy hunting ground for correct score picks so this exercise will concentrate on Premier, Championship, League One & League Two.
I'll publish the National League picks anyway (I have it all set up so no hassle) but they'll be just for curiosity value and not part of the betting returns.

Shrewd betting or just lucky? Who knows, the next bunch of fixtures may well reverse the early trend.

National League, ignored as far as this betting regime goes had only four fixtures this weekend and bucking the evidence I'd seen since January 1st, a single winning score showed a profit. £40 stake returned £65.

A good yield there, without bemoaning the fact that our 2~2 prediction for the Villa v Spurs game was a winner up until the 4th minute of added time at the end of the game.
But as every wise punter knows in betting there is no room for "nearly" or "almost", bets have only two outcomes, one is win, EVERYTHING else is LOSE.

This is an exercise to see if a profit can be made from correct scores and in order to maintain a level playing field I'm using a single, easily accessible bookmaker. Occasionally you'll see research where using "best odds" shows a profit, whereas "average odds" do not.

Although I take your point that better prices would be available on Betfair, etc., it is difficult if not impossible to use variable and somewhat intangible prices. Final Bet365 odds ensure that if a profit can be turned using such an arbitrary measure, anyone could repeat it and even improve on it by shopping around.

However, nobody can get best odds all of the time, so using them as a measure is disingenuous.

Ignoring the National League games for this exercise because of negative returns is okay, but I can't help wondering just why, and is there anything I can do to flag up no-go areas earlier?

This season the Premier League games thus far have produced 29 different score variants, is there any wonder that correct score betting is so difficult?

The Championship has had 32 different scorelines, League One 33, League Two 28 and National League 31. Little there then to indicate much to trigger further investigation.

The vast majority of these different scores though will be one-offs, Southampton 0-9 Leicester can maybe be regarded as a freak event for example. So what if I examine the most frequent scores in each division? Checking out the proportion taken by the 5 most common scores in each of the English leagues there are small differences;

Prem  49%
Cham  53%
Lg One 51%
Lg Two 52%
National  47%

So, the five most frequent scores in this season's National League shows the lowest proportion of all the leagues, is this significant? However, the best figure is with the Championship which is certainly not the best performing using my prediction methods.

Time to search out another "competitive" league to see how their figures stack up. The German Budesliga . . .
It shows 30 different scores from 198 games this season, rather a high number considering their number of games played is less than half those played in English L1 & L2.
The most frequent 5 games in Germany account for only 40% of games played. I check out this league by adopting my same correct score method from Jan 1st to date. Very low strike rate of winners and a substantial loss so far!

Mmmm, What top 5 proportions are displayed by the top division in say, France, Italy & Spain?
France 51%
Italy  48%
Spain  53%

If these figures do indicate which leagues are better suited to this variety of correct score betting then LaLiga would be a good place to start looking.
Think again, since Jan 1st using my procedure on the Spanish league produced a substantial loss. So, work in progress

I'm aware of that, and 8 games have ended 0-0, but one of them was a correct prediction. And an additional £70 returned would add another 5% to the total.
