Middlesbrough vs Birmingham

Well, it seems that Middlesbrough are doing a thoroughly decent job recently of helping us win our bets in the Championship. The second tier of English football throws up a couple of league games tonight but our focus is on the clash between the Boro and Birmingham in a 7:45pm GMT kick-off at the Riverside with relegation issues still hanging over both clubs like an eerie shadow.

Middlesbrough were enduring an appalling start to their league campaign but results have improved lately. 2 wins in their opening 17 league matches has now turned into just 1 loss in their last 6 league games to leave them 17th place and 10 points clear of relegation. Unfortunately, that was their most recent match which was a 1-0 loss away to promotion-chasing Fulham. Jonathan Woodgate's men can come into this game full of confidence having won 11 of the last 13 meetings at home between these two sides. Boro have also gone unbeaten in their last 7 home league games.

Birmingham failed to hold on to their lead at home against Cardiff on the weekend in a 1-1 draw. It was a disappointing result for Pep Clotet's men. The Blues are in 18th place and just 1 point behind their opponents in tonight's game coming into this match. Just 1 win in their last 8 league games is demoralising form and a real concern is their defensive record having not kept a clean sheet since 22nd October. If Birmingham win this game then it'll be the first time they'd have completed a league double over Middlesbrough since 2012/13. They have also failed to score on each of their last four visits to the Riverside.

I'm going to have to follow my instincts for this one and use that last bit of information to take a riskier punt and back Middlesbrough to win with a clean sheet. I've not really been impressed by Birmingham at all this season and I'm surprised they're as high as they are in the league table. I know Boro lost against Fulham but it did seem an out-of-character performance compared to recent displays. I'm sure they'll bounce back here, particularly with an improved display from their back-line.

Charlton vs Fulham

The midweek Championship action continues tonight with relegation battlers Charlton hosting promotion hopefuls Fulham in a 7:45pm GMT kick-off at The Valley. The form of these two sides could not be further apart with the home side struggling to put positive results together with the away side enjoying a purple patch of results in the league as they look to invade the automatic promotion spots.

Charlton's woeful run has continued in the league with Lee Bowyer's men now having clocked up just 1 win in their last 16 league matches. The Addicks will be keen to start picking up points as soon as possible with the club now in 19th place and just 5 points above the relegation zone heading into this game. One thing that can give the club's fans hope coming into this game is that the team has a solid home record recently having remained unbeaten in their last 3 league games at The Valley. The problem is that even in those games they've conceded an average of 2 goals per game so the pressure is on them to score at least two goals to get anything from these games unless the defence tightens up.

Fulham are starting to show their full potential in recent matches. Scott Parker has witnessed his team win 4 of their last 6 league games as they have moved on up to 3rd in the table and just 4 points behind second placed Leeds. Three clean sheets in their last four league games is proof that the Cottagers have addressed defensive frailties and built form on the back of a resilient back-line. That defensive solidarity will be key if they want to take all three points here.

I think the combination of Charlton's weak defence and Fulham's strong back-line will be the difference maker tonight. Both of these teams have shown in recent games that they can score goals but only one team has shown they can keep the ball out at the other end. Getting momentum at this stage of the season in the Championship is golden and Fulham appear to have found form at the right time. Charlton, on the other hand, are in free fall.

Stoke vs Swansea

The solitary Championship fixture this weekend comes at the Bet365 Stadium where Stoke host Swansea in a 3pm GMT kick-off. Both sides have been eliminated from the FA Cup already so with the FA Cup 4th Round taking place this weekend it makes sense for these two sides to get their league game out of the way. Who will prevail victorious in this battle between sides fighting at different ends of the table?

Stoke remain in a relegation dogfight at this stage of the season despite sacking former manager Nathan Jones and replacing him with Northern Ireland head coach Michael O'Neill. The Potters are in 21st place and 4 points clear of the relegation zone with a game in hand on the team behind them. Just 1 defeat in their last 5 league games suggests that things are moving in the right direction but there's still a long way to go until the last game and they're still not clear of the bottom three. On the positive front, Stoke have won 4 of the last 5 league meetings with Swansea.

Swansea continue to keep their play-off aspirations alive. Every time Steve Cooper's side hit a run of results they then suffer a loss or two that pins them back. The Swans are in 7th place and just 1 point outside the play-off spots with a game in hand on their rivals Preston who currently occupy that last spot. An unbeaten run of 4 league games with just 1 goal conceded during that time makes for encouraging reading. However, their away form is an issue with Swansea having won just 1 of their last 6 away league games and failing to win any of their last 8 league matches against Stoke.

This is a big game for both of these teams. It's an opportunity for Stoke to break clear of the relegation zone and it's a chance for Swansea to move back into the top six. A lot to gain for both sides. I'm expecting a turgid game with Stoke's approach under O'Neill and Swansea's more stringent defence. I can see a single goal providing the winner if they can be separated. I was going to back a draw but I think Stoke could actually sneak the win here.
