Groningen vs Utrecht

A mixed bag of results in Eredivisie last week saw us see some winners and losers with our bets. This week, we turn our attention to a clash between two sides that are hoping to make a push for the European competition play-offs this season. It's Groningen versus Utrecht in a 1:30pm kick-off this Sunday afternoon with the game taking place at the Hitachi Capital Mobility Stadium.

Groningen currently sit in 10th place and are just 3 points off the pace of the play-off positions. Head coach Danny Buijs had seen his team rise up the table after a slow start with an unbeaten run of six league games that included keeping three clean sheets. Unfortunately, that string of results came to an end last week when they suffered a narrow 1-0 loss away to Fortuna Sittard. Just 2 defeats at home in the league this season gives them reason to be confident that they can bounce back here but how will they deal with that defeat last week?

Utrecht are undergoing a small knock to their positive campaign. John van den Brom's men are 8th in the table and just 1 point outside the play-off positions. Interestingly, they're only 5 points off the pace of the automatic European qualification places. The only problem is that the club are on a downward spiral. It's now three league defeats on the trot and the club has failed to score in each one of those matches. Just 2 wins from their 7 away league games is also something that their fans are wary of and puts them against the ropes in this game.

It'll be interesting to see how these two sides approach this game. Groningen will need to pick themselves up after tasting defeat for the first time in a while. Utrecht need to ensure a rot doesn't set in. A couple more defeats and they could find themselves sliding down the table and away from the play-off chasers. Their lack of goals is a massive worry and I've not seen anything from their matches that suggests that will be fixed here. I can see Groningen bouncing back to winning ways and Utrecht's strife continuing.
