Standard Liege vs KV Mechelen

The Belgian First Division A is a cruel mistress this weekend with a number of tough calls. I was going to choose a risky one after deciding against being boring and backing Anderlecht again but I've settled on this clash between Standard Liege and KV Mechelen that is scheduled to kick-off at 7pm GMT this Sunday from the Stade Maurice Dufrasne in Liege.

Standard Liege will be satisfied with their start to this season. Michel Preud'homme's men are 2nd in the table only behind league leaders Club Brugge. The gap is 6 points and they have played a game more than the top side but it's a space they will feel they can tighten. The home form of the team is almost exemplary with 6 wins and 1 draw from their 7 games at home. A 2-1 win against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League in midweek was also the perfect way to bounce back after last weekend's disappointing 3-1 loss away to Gent.

KV Mechelen come into this game looking to improve on their 4th place position in the league table. The fans will undoubtedly be delighted with the work that manager Wouter Vrancken's players have done so far. One of the key factors in this season's positive start is the away form with the club boasting the 2nd best away form in the league after suffering just 2 defeats in their 7 away matches in the league.

Make no mistake about this game, it's going to be a tough one for Standard Liege. I feel they've been close to immaculate at home this season so we'll see the real divide between a team like Standard Liege that are genuine title contenders and KV Mechelen that might well drop off the European qualification pace as the season progresses. I'm willing to back Standard Liege to win this one comfortably.
