Pyunik vs Wolves

The 3rd Qualifying Round of the Europa League continues tonight and I'm taking a look at the game between Armenian side Pyunik and Premier League club Wolves that is set to kick off at 5pm at the Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium in Yerevan. It's only a matter of days before the new Premier League season starts so is there value to be had on the home side here?

Pyunik are already being written off by a number of tipsters across the board but is that a naive stance to take? The Armenian Premier League side missed out on their domestic league title by 1 point last season to Ararat-Armenia. It might not be the strongest league but they're a side that know how to fight until the bitter end. It's the attacking prowess of Aleksandr Tarkhanov's that could be a concern for Wolves in this game. Pyunik have scored in 9 of their last 10 home games in the Europa League. They have also scored 5 times in their last 2 home games in this competition this season.

This game comes at possibly the most awkward time for Wolves. The new league campaign is only a few days away and they have an away European game on a Thursday afternoon that's a 7 hour plane trip away. It begs the question, what sort of line-up is Nuno Santo going to pick for this game? Will he use it as a chance to test the match fitness of new players such as Patrick Cutrone and Jesus Vallejo? This Wolves squad currently only boasts 21 outfield first team players and that's when they're all fully fit. I think this is a dangerous game for Wolves.

The set of circumstances heading into this game offers a perfect storm for Wolves. First league game coming up this weekend, players having already endured a rigorous pre-season with a tournament in Asia and European games already, plus the long round trip for this game. Not to mention their thin squad. I'm a little bit worried for Wolves here. I think we could actually see an upset. Pyunik are worth backing to get something from this game today. It's a hell of a punt but these situations don't come along very often and at the value on offer it's worth the risk in my opinion.

FC Midtjylland vs Rangers

Our second preview of this round of Europa League matches is the clash between Danish Superliga side FC Midtjylland and Scottish Premier League club Rangers in a 7pm BST kick-off at the MCH Arena in Herning tonight. These clubs will set up a tie against Polish team Legia Warsaw or Greek outfit Atromitos in the next round for a place in the group stages if they win this two-legged affair.

FC Midtjylland have earned their fair share of giant-killings of British sides over the years but this time they come into a game against a club from the British Isles as the favourites. Kenneth Andersen saw his team fall some way short of the title last season but that's not surprising seeing as it was won by the giants of FC Copenhagen. The Danish side are four league games into their new campaign so they'll likely be slightly sharper than their opponents. The Wolves are joint top of the league with four wins from four so that should be a warning to Rangers.

Rangers are yet to taste defeat this season, including pre-season, but they're not exactly being overly convincing in their matches so far. Steve Gerrard's side have not conceded a single goal during their European campaign so far in ties against Gibraltar's St Joseph's and Luxembourg's Progres Niederkorn. The 0-0 draw out in Luxembourg last week was hardly the most inspiring of performances but it did the job. This is a huge step up for Gerrard's men but do they have enough to take something from this game?

One thing Gerrard knows how to do as Rangers manager is lock that defence down tight. His side have kept 9 clean sheets in their 12 qualification matches in the Europa League since Gerrard took over. I wouldn't put it past them to do the business again here but it's a tall order against a very competent FC Midtjylland attack. I think Rangers will do well to take anything from this game and I can see either a 0-0 draw or a narrow 1-0 defeat. I'll give the Gers the benefit of the doubt and back them to grind out a draw.
