PAOK Saloniki vs Ajax

The first preview for this upcoming batch of first legs in the Champions League 3rd Qualifying Round is the clash between Greek Super League club PAOK Saloniki and Dutch Eredivisie side Ajax in a 6pm BST kick-off at the Toumba Stadium in Thessaloniki tonight. Both teams won their respective domestic leagues so this is a proper battle of champions.

PAOK Saloniki managed to achieve an invincible season last year with the club going the entire domestic league season unbeaten. It shows how effective this team are when they've finished above the likes of AEK Athens, Olympiakos, and Panathinaikos. Abel Ferreira has built an accomplished squad but can they take their domestic form into the European competition?

Ajax were the darlings of last season's Champions League. Erik ten Hag's free-flowing football had fans reminiscing back to the days of Johan Cruyff's total football. In the end, the club fell just short in the semi-final against Tottenham but they won over a lot of admirers. Unfortunately, once again, their success has cost them some of their biggest names with Frenkie de Jong, Matthijs de Ligt, and Maximilian Wober all leaving the club for pastures new. A number of new faces such as Razvan Marin, Quincy Promes, and Edson Alvarez have been brought in but are they good enough to fill the void left by those massive departures? Tonight will tell us.

These two sides last met in the 2016/17 Champions League. Back then it was Ajax that won 3-2 on aggregate. This is the first bit of action in this competition for both of these clubs this season so it's a baptism of fire for them. So much resting on their early competitive matches. I can see goals being scored here. Ajax's defence has needed patching up over the summer and sometimes these changes can take time. PAOK can be dangerous on the attack on home territory so that could cause problems for the Dutch side. I'm slightly favouring an Ajax win but it could be a tough night.

Also thinking about BTS in Paok Ajax match. From what i saw against Vitesse that shouldnt be problem. Ajax looked pretty bad in defense and showed some weeknesses. Van Den Beek will be in first eleven despite almost surely going to Madrid.

Paok always have hot pitch at home. Bought some interesting players and i think they can cause problems to Ajax here.

FK Crvena Zvezda(Red star Belgrade) vs FC København(FC Copenhagen)

Although their last tie ended in a disappointing loss, it has to be mentioned that the home team have been a force to reckon with, on home soil.

The squad are on a four-match winning streak at this venue, three of which have seen the hosts win with a clean sheet intact. The visitors have not been consistent in their last five outings and have failed to pick up the win twice in those games. Additionally, two of the wins that they did secure came against fairly mediocre sides. That in mind, the maiden clash between the two teams is more than likely to be a tight clash, with Red Star certain to come out on top by not more than a slender margin.

Both the sides have kept a clean sheet in their last two match-ups, and have featured less than 2.5 goals on the scorecards. Given their recent defensive records, we can rule out any chances of a goal-scoring spree unfolding on either end this week.

Red Star Belgrade to win

Under 2.5 goals

CFR Cluj vs Celtic

In the second day of matches for this first leg phase of the 3rd Qualifying Round we have Romanian side CFR Cluj hosting Scottish champions Celtic in a 7pm BST kick-off from the CFR Cluj Stadium on Wednesday night. The winning side from this two-legged affair will reach the play-off round and play Czechia club Slavia Prague for a place in the group stage.

CFR Cluj have former Chelsea and Romanian international defender Dan Petrescu at the helm. He is already building quite the CV for his managerial career having won league titles with Cluj twice, Unirea Urziceni, and Krasnodar. This is his second stint with the club having taken a role with Chinese Super League side Guizhou Hengfeng inbetween his two tenures with Cluj. He is now hoping to guide them to the Champions League group stages. His side have squeezed through the previous two rounds with 3-2 aggregate wins against both Kazakhstan side Astana in the 1st Qualifying Round and then Israeli outfit Maccabi Tel Aviv in the 2nd Qualifying Round.

Celtic have cruised through the previous two rounds of this competition. A 5-2 aggregate win in the 1st Qualifying Round against Bosnian side Sarajevo and then a 7-1 win over two legs versus Estonian club Nomme Kalju in the 2nd Qualifying Round have gotten them to this stage. The Hoops began their league campaign with a 7-0 annihilation of St Johnstone.

This is a close game to call. Celtic are arguably in the better form but CFR Cluj are a side that know how to scrape through these games. Cluj were last in the group phase of this competition back in 2012. They've not managed to make it there since. Neil Lennon will be keen to see his side take something from this game. They've played well on the road so far this season so I'm going to have to back them to get a result here.
