Morocco vs Benin

The last 16 begins with an intriguing match between Group D winners Morocco and the third placed side in Group F Benin in a 5pm BST kick-off at the Al Salam Stadium in Cairo. One of the favourites for the trophy will be keen to get past a side that has caused issues for teams already in this tournament.

Morocco haven't exactly lit up this tournament yet but Herve Renard's men still managed to finish top of their group without dropping a point. The Atlas Lions managed to grind out three 1-0 wins over Namibia, Ivory Coast, and South Africa. It might not be the most thrilling of football but it's been effective thus far.

Benin squeaked through to the knock-out stages after finishing their group with just 3 points. Interestingly, Michel Dussuyer's side are also unbeaten so far because it was three draws they had in their group games. The 2-2 draw with Ghana was followed by two 0-0 draws with Guinea-Bissau and Cameroon. It shows their defence has also shut up shop recently.

As you can see, both of these teams know how to lock a game down. Five clean sheets between them over their six group games played is impressive stuff. It obviously means I'm not expecting this game to be packed with goals. I think Morocco are the clear favourites and I wouldn't be surprised to see them pull of yet another narrow one goal win. I'm not convinced Benin have enough fire power up top to break this resolute Moroccan side down. 1-0 or 2-0 to Renard's side.

Uganda Vs Senegal

I go for goals over 1.5 with 1XBET @odd1.64

Uganda are lined up to play Senegal as the Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals this Friday evening.  The Ugandans advanced to this round of the game after emerging second in Group A, behind hosts Egypt. The East Africans beat DR Congo2-0, drew 1-1 with Zimbabwe and lost 2-0 to Egypt. Patrick Kaddu and Emannuel Okwi have emerged the scorers for Uganda in the tournament, so far. Next opponents Senegal were second in Group C, behind Algeria and in front of Kenya and Tanzania. The Lions of Teranga opened their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Tanzania with Balde Keita and Krepin Diatta scoring the goals. They later lost 1-0 to Algeria before handing Kenya a 3-0 hiding. Sadio Mane scored a brace against Kenya and Ismaila Sarr completed the rout. Senegal have beaten Uganda in two of their last three head to head matches, of which one was a draw. So far at this level, It’s going to be an interesting game with goals over 1.5 for sure . Good luck🤝

Uganda vs Senegal

The second match in the last 16 of this tournament comes from the Cairo International Stadium in Cairo at 8pm BST where Group A second placed finishers Uganda face Group C runners up Senegal. A surprise package take on one of the pre-tournament favourites. Could this game see our first shock of the knock-out stages?

Uganda started this tournament with a bang as they upset DR Congo with a 2-0 win in their opening game. That was followed up by a slightly less emphatic 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe. Sebastien Desabre's men ended the group phase with a 2-0 loss to hosts Egypt but the hard work had been done and they qualified automatically for the last 16. It does feel like their tournament performances are in a state of decline after that high of the first group match.

Senegal have failed to hit the performance levels expected of them so far in this tournament. Aliou Cisse's men have had mixed results with an underwhelming 2-0 win over Tanzania in their opening group game before a disappointing 1-0 loss to Algeria. The 3-0 dismantling of Kenya was a pleasing return to winning ways but hardly unexpected. The Lions of Teranga will be keen to get past this potentially tricky tie to set up a Quarter-Final clash with Morocco or Benin.

On paper, this match is Senegal's to lose. The one thing going for Cisse's team right now is the fact that they have performed when they have been the clear favourites. That is the case today. They have the better results and players in this tournament. It kind of feels like Uganda's bubble has burst a bit. The Cranes have an upset in them but I think they've already delivered their best at this tournament.

Nigeria Vs Cameroon

Total goals over 1.5 with 1XBET @ 1.67

Nigeria's Super Eagles are set to play fellow heavyweights Cameroon as the Africa Cup of Nations continues into the quarterfinals this weekend. The Nigerians emerged the second-best side of Group B, behind Madagascar and in front of Guinea and Burundi. Nigeria won twice and lost once in their group matches to collect six points. The team opened the campaign with a 1-0 victory over Burundi, Odion Ighalo scoring the lone goal. Kenneth Omureo then secured the 1-0 victory over Guinea before they lost 2-0 to Madagascar. In total, Nigeria have won thrice and lost thrice in their last six matches across the board. Next opponents Cameroon progressed as the second best side of Group F. The Indomitable Lions were tied on points with Ghana, who, however, scored more goals. The Cameroonians settled for barren draws against Ghana and Benin, after beating Guinea Bissau 2-0 through goals netted by Yaya Banana and Stephane Bahoken. From their last three head to head matches against Cameroon, Nigeria have won twice and once settled for a draw. Cameroon, like Nigeria, are a tactcial side. However, the Eagles appear more determined to score compared to the Lions. This will be a tough match and it is expected that more goals than one will be scored by full time. Good luck 🤝

Nigeria vs Cameroon

Next up in the last 16 we have two heavyweights of the African continent when three time winners of the Africa Cup of Nations Nigeria play reigning champions Cameroon in a 5pm BST kick-off at the Alexandria Stadium in Alexandria. One of the big guns is going home early but who will it be?

Nigeria were far from their best in their first two group games when they secured 1-0 wins against both Burundi and Guinea. However, a shock 2-0 loss against underdogs Madagascar saw their undefeated record in the group stage crumble and their top spot in the group surrendered. It's led to them facing Cameroon here as opposed to DR Congo who play Madagascar tomorrow.

Cameroon started with business-like 2-0 win over Guinea-Bissau but it's not been easy since that opening game. Two 0-0 draws weren't what the Indomitable Lions would have wanted against Ghana and Benin but it was enough to see them top their group ahead of their rivals.

The key in this game will be Cameroon's defensive solidarity. Clarence Seedorf has structured them well knowing that his team lack an attacking potency. Gernot Rohr will be hoping his team don't suffer a hangover from that Madagascar defeat. It's a tough one to call and even though I'm tempted by the draw over 90 minutes there's just something about this Cameroon side. I wouldn't be surprised if they sneak a win.

Egypt vs South Africa

The second match from the Africa Cup of Nations last 16 today is an 8pm BST kick-off at the Cairo International Stadium in Cairo when host nation Egypt play tournament outsiders South Africa in a battle between North and South of the continent. Who will progress?

Egypt met expectations during the group stage by finishing top of Group A winning all three of their games and not conceding a single goal in any of those matches. A low key 1-0 win over Zimbabwe was followed up by a more convincing 2-0 victory against DR Congo. Their final group game was a solid 2-0 win versus Uganda.

South Africa are thanking their lucky stars after qualifying as a best placed third positioned team. Stuart Baxter's men lost 1-0 to both Ivory Coast and Morocco. Those results sandwiched a 1-0 win against Namibia. The 3 points was just enough for Bafana Bafana to progress as fourth ranked side in the third placed table. It was only on goal difference that saw them qualify ahead of Kenya.

I think even though South Africa have proven hard to beat in this tournament this is where their journey comes to an end. Egypt will be dominant with the home support and not only are the Pharaohs looking solid at the back but they have that attacking threat that is really showing them to be worth candidates to go all the way. A 2-0 win for the hosts I feel.

Madagascar vs DR Congo

The 5pm BST kick-off in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations Last 16 on Sunday afternoon is a fascinating encounter between surprise Group B winners Madagascar and Group A third placed finishers DR Congo in a game that's set to be played at the Alexandria Stadium in Alexandria.

Madagascar shocked the tournament on their debut by storming through to the 2nd Round as winners of their group. Nicolas Dupuis saw his team get off to an encouraging start with a 2-2 draw against Guinea. That first point was then followed by two wins that included a 1-0 win over Burundi and then a famous 2-0 victory versus Nigeria.

DR Congo have endured contrasting fortunes. Florent Ibenge's side suffered a humiliating opening game 2-0 loss to Uganda. A 2-0 defeat to host nation Egypt in their second group game put the Leopards on the verge of elimination. However, a 4-0 annihilation of Zimbabwe rectified their previous results and saw them qualify as a best placed third positioned side.

This game could go either way. It's hard to tell if DR Congo have put the first couple of poor results behind them or if that win over Zimbabwe papered over the cracks. Madagascar have shown they are a team to be reckoned with and won't be beaten easily. Will this be the end of their road? DR Congo remain a very tricky side that reached the Quarter-Finals just two years ago. That experience could prove vital here. An outcome is hard to call over 90 minutes so the best value seems to be in the draw no bet market backing Madagascar.

Algeria vs Guinea

Group C winners Algeria face third place in Group B Guinea in the Sunday evening kick-off at 8pm BST in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations at 30 June Stadium in Cairo. It's a contrast of styles coming together in this absorbing clash but will defence prevail over attack?

Algeria have been nothing short of clinical in this tournament so far. Djamel Belmadi's men navigated their way through their group with maximum points and three clean sheets. A 2-0 win over Kenya was followed by a narrow 1-0 victory over Senegal. The group was capped off with a 3-0 destruction of Tanzania.

Guinea haven't had it quite that straight forward. Paul Put saw his team cling on to their place in the tournament by the skin of their butt cheeks (Is that a saying? If not, we're making it a saying!). The National Elephants were held to a 2-2 draw against Madagascar. That was then followed by a tight 1-0 loss to Nigeria before they managed to seal a 2-0 win over Burundi in their final group game to avoid missing out on a third place qualification spot.

This is probably the easiest game to call so far in this last 16 phase. Algeria have been so impressive up to this point. There is a concern that it's going a bit too well and they might have peaked early but I feel they've got more than enough to get past this very average Guinea side. In a stronger group, Guinea might not even have qualified for this round. I think a solid 1-0 or 2-0 win for the Greens is the best option.

Madagascar 🇲🇬  Vs  DR Congo 🇨🇩

Goals over 1.5 with 1XBET @ 1.51

Surprise Group B winners Madagascar will take on DR Congo in the round of 16 this weekend. The Madagascans emerged supreme in a group that also had Nigeria, Guinea and Burundi. The team drew 2-2 with Guinea on opening day, with Sory Kaba and Francois Kamano netting their goals. Madagascar then went on to beat Burundi 1-0 through a Marco Ilaimaharitra strike before thrashing Nigeria 2-0. Lalaina Nomenjanahary and Charles Andriamatsinoro were the scorers against Nigeria. In total, Madagascar have won twice, drawn twice and lost twice in their last six matches. Next opponents DR Congo were among the third-place finishers to make it to the next round. Playing in Group A, Congo fell to Uganda and Egypt on 2-0 scorelines before rising to beat Zimbabwe 4-0. The goals in the match against Zimbabwe were scored by Jonathan Bolingi, Britt Assombalonga and Cedric Bakambu, who netted a brace. DR Congo have beaten Madagascar in all of their last two head to head matches. Madagascar were impressive in the group round, especially with their victory over Nigeria. However, they are set to meet a stubborn Congolese side that has proven tough for them to beat in the past. I’m positive it’s going to be an exciting match with not less than 2 goals for sure . Good Luck 🤝

Yes, my concern here is that DR Congo have learned from their mistakes earlier in the tournament. I still think the way Madagascar are playing right now they offer better value but it's a tough one to call. Wouldn't be surprised to see it go to penalties.

Madagascar vs DR Congo: Draw

DR Congo are the bookies' favourites but they face the unbeaten side of Madagascar making their debut at the tournament. DR Congo hold an all-time African Cup of Nations record of 20 wins, 23 draws and 29 losses from 72 matches. They had one 4:0 win and two 2:0 losses in the group stage of the cup. Law of averages calls for a draw in this one.

Mali vs Ivory Coast

It's the final day of the last 16 in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. The first match up is the enticing fixture between Group E winners Mali and Group D runners-up Ivory Coast in a 5pm BST kick-off at the Suez Stadium in Suez. In-form Algeria await the winners of this tie.

Mali will be forgiven for thinking they've been dealt a hard here. Winning their group saw the Eagles finish ahead of Tunisia, Angola, and Mauritania but it appears they have received little reward for such a feat by being given a game against one of the pre-tournament favourites in Ivory Coast.

Ivory Coast will be disappointed they didn't top their group but their only defeat came in a narrow 1-0 loss to Morocco so it's not really a huge shock. Ibrahim Kamara's men haven't shown anything in the group stage to make me think they're not performing well and they'll be a test for any team in this knock-out phase.

Both of these sides are strong in their attacking departments. Mali scored 6 goals during the group phase but they're squad is still lacking experience. The oldest outfield player being 28 years old. Ivory Coast have talented players such as Max Gradel, Wilfried Zaha, Wilfried Bony, and Nicolas Pepe to call upon up front. I'm expecting a thriller but think the Elephants could sneak the win.

Ghana vs Tunisia

The final match from the last 16 at this year's Africa Cup of Nations kicks off at 8pm BST at the Ismailia Stadium in Ismailia between Group F winners Ghana and Group E runners-up Tunisia. One of these sides will face Madagascar in the Quarter-Finals and one side will be leaving the competition prematurely.

Ghana haven't looked at their best in this tournament so far but James Kwesi Appiah's men have done enough to progress to this stage at group winners. Two draws against Benin and Cameroon left the Black Stars needing a win against Guinea-Bissau in their last group game to qualify and they did exactly that. The draw between Benin and Cameroon allowed them to finish top of the group too.

Tunisia as the second highest ranked side in the FIFA rankings. Unfortunately, Alain Giresse's side haven't lived up to that billing just yet. The Eagles of Carthage remained unbeaten during their group stage but they also failed to win a single game. Make of that what you will but the fact they drew with Mali, Angola, and Mauritania suggests they're not quite fulfilling expectations.

Picking a winner over 90 minutes here is near enough impossible. Both teams have fallen well below the standards expected of them before the tournament started. They managed just 1 group stage win between them and when they last met in this tournament during the knock-out stage in 2012 they needed extra-time to settle the issue. I can see the same happening here. If anyone is going to sneak the win in the 90 minutes it'll be Ghana but I'm not convinced they will.
