Sassuolo vs Frosinone

It might still be a few weeks until the Serie A season finishes but things are starting to wind down. In this week's preview, I take a look at this match between a mid-table Sassuolo and relegation strugglers Frosinone in a 2pm kick-off this Sunday at the Mapei Stadium - Citta del Tricolore.

Sassuolo have served us well over the years so I'm hoping for them more good news from them come Sunday evening. Roberto De Zerbi's men are 10th place and any hope of European qualification through the league or relegation to Serie B have firmly been non-existent for a number of games now. It's all about preparation for next season. An undefeated run of 5 league games suggests they're playing with freedom and are still a tough side to beat.

Frosinone are staring relegation to Serie B in the face. Marco Baroni came in mid-season but it doesn't appear he can save them. Three league defeats on the bounce have left them 10 points adrift with 4 league games left to play. Relegation should be confirmed within the next couple of games so how will that affect the players' morale?

I can't see past a home win. Sassuolo are playing with no pressure. Frosinone know that even if they win their chances of survival are very small. I'm actually going to go a step further than backing them to win and going for the handicap win. I'm afraid we could be waving goodbye to Frosinone in Serie A this week.

Empoli vs. Fiorentina

Going for goals here for obvious reasons. Despite Empoli being a very good attacking team (especially at home), they're currently in the relegation zone, 4 points below Udinese due to their very poor defense.

Surprisingly, despite being 18th in the league with only two matches remaining, Empoli's xG at home this season is the 6th best in the league, but their xGA is the 2nd worst, which is why they've been struggling. They've only failed to score three times - against Inter, Roma, and Lazio, and have kept just two clean sheets all season.

Fiorentina, on the other hand, have the 6th best xG as well as the 6th best xGA away from home this season, but that is mostly thanks to their early-season form. They've conceded in their last 7 away trips, and have shipped in 9 goals in their last 4 away matches, but they've scored in all 7 of those away trips as well.

Lazio vs. Atalanta

Two teams going head to head here competing for a Champions League spot. Gasperini's Atalanta have been a surprise package this season and play some of the most entertaining attacking football in the league.

Before their last home match, Lazio had only lost to Juventus, Inter, and Napoli this season, but then they surprisingly and disappointingly lost to a Chievo team that is dead last in the league with only 15 points to their name in 34 matches. Their home form has generally been decent (7th best in the league) but their results against the teams in the league have been very poor:

  • Home and away defeats against Juventus
  • Home and away defeats against Napoli
  • Home draw and away defeat against Milan
  • Home defeat and away win against Inter
  • Home win and away defeat against Roma
  • Away defeat against Atalanta
  • Home draw against Torino

So they've collected just 5 points out of a possible 18 at home against 6 of the 7 teams above them in the table, excluding Atalanta.

Atalanta, on the other hand, drew 0-0 against Inter and defeated Napoli 2-1 in their last two away games. They also drew against both Milan and Roma earlier in the season and have yet to play Juventus in Turin but they did knock them out of the Coppa Italia, so they've shown time and time again this season that they deserve to be in the running for a CL spot.

I think Atalanta are underpriced to get a result here.

Chievo vs SPAL: SPAL to win

Chievo are officially relegated and SPAL have a real chance to finish in top half of the table after a remarkable run since start of 2019, winning vs Roma, Lazio, Juve at home and vs Parma, Frosinone and Empoli away. Meanwhile, Chievo has lost 10 out of 15 matches in 2019 and only 1 win vs 10-men Lazio.

SPAL has drawn 5, won once and lost once at home vs teams below it in the table(current bottom 7). On the other hand, SPAL has won 4 matches and drawn once vs same teams but away. SPAL won their 3 away games vs bottom 3 last year when the team narrowly escaped the drop zone and has already won 2/2 played away matches vs teams from bottom 3.

Napoli vs Cagliari: Napoli/Napoli HT/FT

Only 1 home win in this Serie A round and 2 games remain, where the hosts are the clear favorites. Well, Cagliari is pretty bad away from home and has highest number of Loss/Loss Half Time/Full Time away games this season (10). Napoli has won 8 out of last 10 matches vs Cagliari in Serie A, including HT/FT wins in last two games in Naples.

P.s.: In final 30 minutes before the kick off the odds for Napoli/Napoli 3/4 & Cagliari/Napoli less than 20/1 are shortening according to oddschecker.
