Strasbourg vs Montpellier

The Ligue 1 matches throw up a compelling fixture for us punters this weekend when a stubborn side to beat on their own turf face one of the top away performers in the league. It's Strasbourg playing Montpellier in a 7pm kick-off on Saturday evening at the Stade de la Meinau.

Strasbourg have experienced a rather average season this year. Thierry Laurey's men are sat in 9th place with relegation out of the question but hopes of European competition next season looking rather unlikely. Their players wouldn't be blamed for being on the beach already but they are unbeaten in 5 league games. The only problem is that 4 of those have been draws.

Montpellier remain very much in the hunt for European competition this season. Michel Der Zakarian's side are in 6th place and still in contention for a Europa League spot via the league. Consistency has abandoned them in recent weeks with 3 wins, 1 draw, and 4 defeats coming in their last 8 league matches.

The home side in this match have only suffered defeat in front of their own fans on three occasions this season. Those losses came against Angers, Nimes, and Nantes. Hardly the sides you'd expect them to struggle against. They seem to raise their game against the big guns. Montpellier possess the 4th best away record in the league with just 5 defeats from their 16 away games.

I think Strasbourg could be worth backing to sneak a win. The Alsatians have lost just 1 of their last 10 home matches and they have been in fine form recently. Montpellier are struggling to find their feet with the pressure on in the race for Europe. It's also just 1 win in their last 9 league games for La Paillade. Home win here.

The French football fixtures this week are slightly extended because Ligue 2 has some catch-up games coming at us this midweek. I know interest in the Ligue 1 and 2 matches is dying down now but there is still so much to play for in the French second tier. Metz and Brest are still firmly in the midst of a title battle.
