StevieDay1983
Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid The big game in La Liga this weekend comes in a 3:15pm kick-off at the Wanda Metropolitano where it's the Madrid derby between city rivals Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid. Whoever loses this one will put their title challenge under serious threat so there's a lot at stake here. Atletico Madrid had been on an outstanding unbeaten run of 18 league games before last weekend's disappointing 1-0 defeat away to Real Betis. Had it not been for 7 of those 18 matches being draws then Diego Simeone's side could well have been leading the La Liga table. Instead, the dropped points in those matches leaves them in 2nd place and 6 points behind league leaders Barcelona. Things are even worse for Real Madrid. It's been a far from impressive season by Los Blancos. The departure of Zinedine Zidane has seen an awkward transition period that included the ill-fated appointment of former Spain national team head coach Julen Lopetegui before his sacking and the hiring of former Real Madrid player Santiago Solari. The club has improved under Solari. Under Lopetegui they had a record of 4 wins, 2 draws, and 4 defeats in La Liga. Solari has led them to 9 wins, 1 draw, and 2 losses in 12 league matches. This has seen them move to 3rd in the table and 8 points behind Barcelona. One thing that has hardly faltered this season is Atletico Madrid's home form. Los Colchoneros (that's mattress-makers in English!) are undefeated on home turf with 9 wins and 2 draws in the league. It's not a good omen for Real who have struggled on their travels this season having won just 5 of their 11 away matches. However, the away side have won four league games on the bounce. Five of the last six Madrid derby matches have ended in a draw. Atletico have been defensively sound as expected this season but have also struggled to score goals. The signing of Alvaro Morata has hardly inspired confidence that this will change any time soon. Everything appears to point towards a draw here. The key factor here is that neither side wants to lose. On the flip side, can either side afford to drop 2 points? Realistically, it's a tall order to catch Barcelona so is solidifying their position in the top three now a priority? I can see this ending in a 0-0 or 1-1 draw.
