Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona

I'm usually keen to avoid previewing the big games in European leagues because that's where the attention is always focused and it kind of draws attraction away from the other matches that may hold value. However, this weekend, I feel the value can be found in the clash between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona in a 7:45pm kick-off at the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday evening.

Atletico Madrid are in 3rd place in La Liga. A slow start has seen them playing catch-up but Diego Simeone's side are now unbeaten since 1st September. That run of results has seen them rise up the table to be within 1 point of league leaders Barcelona in what is one of the most tightly contested La Liga seasons yet.

Barcelona might be top of the table but there remain murmurs of discontent at the Nou Camp. Ernesto Valverde's side have picked up a habit of dropping points in games they're expected to win. Barcelona have dropped points to a number of lower-placed teams including Girona, Leganes, and Real Betis. On the flip side, they appear to still be able to win the big games against their title rivals. The 5-1 demolition of Real Madrid a few weeks back being the highlight.

Atletico haven't won against Barcelona in their last 16 league meetings with them. That's not the sort of statistic you want to hear going into a game like this. Maybe they can take solace from the fact they did beat Barcelona in a Champions League game back in April 2016.

Simeone's side might have failed to win their last six matches against teams from the Catalan region but they will take heart from possessing the best home record in La Liga this season with 5 wins and 1 draw from their 6 league games at home so far. Only Espanyol and Alaves can boast undefeated home records as well this season.

If you were ever going to back Lionel Messi to score in a game then this would be it. He has netted an incredible 28 goals against Atletico over the years. He has only scored more goals against Sevilla. An amazing record against such a resolutely defensive team.

I'm very excited by this game this weekend. I genuinely think Atletico have a fantastic chance to beat this hoodoo against Barcelona in the league here. Their home record is exemplary and Barcelona are far from invincible this season. A draw seems the most likely outcome so I'm going to take a big punt and back that with a cheeky Messi anytime scorer bet.

Real Sociedad vs Celta Vigo

Considering how they have played this season and how they have donde it against each other, the faorite are the hosts. Real Sociedad should have the home advantage. Both teams have some absences and the hosts have some doubtful players. Both have ha some problems during the season, but I still go with home team @ 1.952
