Weights

There are a range of different factors that handicappers use to determine the weights for the Melbourne Cup. The age, sex and previous career performance all factor into the equation.

A mare (female) nominated will automatically receive a 2kg allowance from it’s male competitors.

The Melbourne Cup field also has a required minimum topweight. The topweight must carry 58kg and once the final field is released if the topweight is less than 58kg, the weights for all horses will be raised.

The minimum weight one can carry in the Melbourne Cup is 49kg.

1. Best Solution (6)
(IRE)
J: PAT COSGRAVE

T: SAEED BIN SUROOR

W: 57.5KG
Best Odds: $13
Rating:
COMMENT: Caulfield Cup winner who produced a career best to win the race. The Caulfield Cup is the traditional lead up, but in recent years it hasn't been the right form reference. 57.5kg is the ask, but he relaxes, he can sustain a run and is in form so there is enough boxes ticked to respect him. Out of the main hopes he has drawn well which puts him in good stead.
THE-CLIFFSOFMOHER.jpg
2. The Cliffsofmoher (9)
(IRE)
J: RYAN MOORE

T: AIDAN O'BRIEN

W: 56.5KG
Best Odds: $17
Rating:
COMMENT: I thought Bowman gave him every chance in the Caulfield Cup but wanted to lay in badly when put under pressure. I can't see him turning the tables on Best Solution and is a clear query at 3200m. Drawn well should get every chance.
MAGIC-CIRCLE.jpg
3. Magic Circle (17)
(IRE)
J: COREY BROWN

T: IAN WILLIAMS

W: 56KG
Best Odds: $9.00
Rating:
COMMENT: This horse has clearly turned the corner since joining Ian Williams, winning 2/2 by six lengths each time where he has produced a slashing turn of foot which is needed to win the Melbourne Cup. Has looked sharp in work at Werribee. Stays and has a turn of foot. That's a winning formula for the Melbourne Cup. Looks the horse to beat despite an awkward draw.
CHESTNUT-COAT.jpg
4. Chestnut Coat (4)
(JPN)
J: YUGA KAWADA

T: YOSHITO YAHAGI

W: 55.5KG
Best Odds: $41
Rating:
COMMENT: Clear forgive run in the Caulfield Cup. Wide no cover for the trip and was a beaten horse on the turn. Didn't handle the wet track either. The step up in trip and on a bigger track, he can bounce back for sure as long as the rain stays away. Should get a good run from the barrier.
MUNTAHAA.jpg
5. Muntahaa (13)
(IRE)
J: JIM CROWLEY

T: JOHN GOSDEN

W: 55.5KG
Best Odds: $11
Rating:
COMMENT: He's the horse on everyone's lips. Visually, the Ebor win was outstanding. But what did he beat? There has been 21 subsequent runs from the race for just one win since. That's the negative, plus the form prior was just fair, and that he's a highly strung animal, but if he puts everything together and gets things to suit, he can certainly win with a little luck from the draw.
Sound-Check.jpg
6. Sound Check (16)
(GER)
J: JORDAN CHILDS

T: MICHAEL MORONEY

W: 55.5KG
Best Odds: $34
Rating:
COMMENT: He was another forgive in the Caulfield Cup. He was out the back and pulling his head off. Looked drunk around the turn but balanced up and his last 100m was encouraging. Big track, 3200m and a more genuine tempo could see him cause problems if he can get some luck from the wide barrier.
WHO-SHOT-THEBARMAN-.jpg
7. Who Shot Thebarman (18)
(NZ)
J: BEN MELHAM

T: CHRIS WALLER

W: 55.5KG
Best Odds: $41
Rating:
COMMENT: A grand old campaigner who will likely sit on speed and make his own luck. Would be a shock to see him win, but his Moonee Valley Cup run was encouraging and I think he's a top 10 contender at big odds.
ACE-HIGH.jpg
8. Ace High (22)
J: TYE ANGLAND

T: DAVID PAYNE

W: 55KG
Best Odds: $71
Rating:
COMMENT: Put a line through his run in the Caulfield Cup. Leading isn't his go, he wasn't happy on the surface and regular rider Tye Angland wasn't on. He will be much better at Flemington where he won the Derby last year. Two miles will be no issue if ridden with cover and will appreciate any rain that hits the track in lead up to the race. Can bounce back with some luck from the wide barrier.
Marmelo.jpeg
9. Marmelo (10)
(GB)
J: HUGH BOWMAN

T: HUGHIE MORRISON

W: 55KG
Best Odds: $16
Rating:
COMMENT: Horses who fail in a previous attempt at a Cup, generally struggle to improve at subsequent attempts. But this horse has got the ability to win so i am happy to give him another shot. If the race was a few hundred metres shorter he would be the horse to beat so if its a slow tempo he will be very hard to hold out. One of the main contenders after drawing well.
AVILIUS-1.jpg
10. Avilius (11)
(GB)
J: GLYN SCHOFIELD

T: JAMES CUMMINGS

W: 54.5KG
Best Odds: $13
Rating:
COMMENT: Earned his spot in the field via a narrow win in the Bart Cummings. Well held in the Cox Plate and IMO looks a clear risk at 3200m. He has been a up a fair while as well so it would take a great training effort from James Cummings. If he runs the distance he is right in the race but a risk at the price seeings he is likely to be stuck a bit wide.
YUCATAN-1.jpg
11. Yucatan (23)
(IRE)
J: JAMES MCDONALD

T: AIDAN O’BRIEN

W: 54.5KG
Best Odds: $6.00
Rating:
COMMENT: If he runs up to the Herbert Power effort, he will go very close. But the price is very short and you're being asked to take $4.50 to see if he can run 3200m. There is enough evidence to suggest he may not and at the price, you couldn't back him. But anything similar to that win and he'll look the winner. Just needs to run the trip and get some luck from the horror barrier.
AUVRAY.jpg
12. Auvray (1)
(FR)
J: TOMMY BERRY

T: RICHARD FREEDMAN

W: 54KG
Best Odds: $81
Rating:
COMMENT: Hasn't raced in just under a month and was plain in what looked a weak race. Happy to let him go through to the keeper despite drawing the inside gate.
FINCHE.jpg
13. Finche (15)

J: ZAC PURTON

T: CHRIS WALLER

W: 54KG
Best Odds: $27
Rating:
COMMENT: I think he is 6-12 months away from showing his best. Geelong Cup run was good but I don't think that's the right form for the Melbourne Cup. Not this year anyway and will likely do it tough from the draw.
RED-CARDINAL.jpg
14. Red Cardinal (5)
(IRE)
J: DAMIEN OLIVER

T: DARREN WEIR

W: 54KG
Best Odds: $41
Rating:
COMMENT: Visually, the Moonee Valley Cup run was just plain, but it was a rock hard track and he hates that. Wants a track with give in it and the forecast is for a shower or two. If the rain comes his chances get a massive boost and the barrier definitely helps.
VENGEUR-MASQUE-1.jpg
15. Vengeur Masque (2)
(IRE)
J: PATRICK MOLONEY

T: MICHAEL MORONEY

W: 54KG
Best Odds: $67
Rating:
COMMENT: Handy stayer for Michael Moroney but I thought he was just fair in the Caulfield Cup. Would need to produce a career best run do go close and I don't think he has that in him despite a good draw.
VENTURA-STORM.jpg
16. Ventura Storm (7)
J: MARK ZAHRA

T: D & B HAYES AND T DABERNIG

W: 54KG
Best Odds: $26
Rating:
COMMENT: Got his way into form with a Moonee Valley Cup win, but I'm putting that down largely to an absolute peach of a steer from Mark Zahra. He does normally save his best for Flemington though. Can he win? I doubt it, but he should be included in multiples with a likely good run from the gate.
A-PRINCE-OF-ARRAN.jpg
17. A Prince Of Arran (20)
(GB)
J: MICHAEL WALKER

T: CHARLIE FELLOWES

W: 53KG
Best Odds: $17
Rating:
COMMENT: It is always tough to win the Lexus Stakes on a Saturday then back-up to win the Melbourne Cup on the Tuesday but the horses who try always run well. Of the Lexus winners in recent years A Prince Of Arran looks like one who can win the Cup with plenty of improvement in him as well as being a rock hard stayer but the barrier will make it tough.
Nakeeta-1.jpg
18. NAKEETA (3)

T: M BAKER & A FORSMAN

J: STEPHEN BASTER

T: G WATERHOUSE AND A BOTT

W: 52KG
Best Odds: $35
Rating:
COMMENT: Aided by bias to win the Geelong Cup, but he led all the way and will be out of trouble on speed. Leading all the way in a Melbourne Cup is saved for champions.

COMMENT: Thought she was the best run in the Caulfield Cup. Loved the way she attacked the line off a moderate. Start prior ran similar splits to Winx in the Turnbull. Very confident she'll run the two miles and is clearly in the mix.
CROSS-COUNTER-1.jpg
23. Cross Counter (19)
(GB)
J: KERRIN MCEVOY

T: CHARLIE APPLEBY

W: 51KG
Best Odds: $9.50
Rating:
COMMENT: Very progressive gelding for Charlie Appleby. Thought he was very good during the York Carnival when beaten a lip. Has had a setback or two at Werribee but appears over them. Have to respect the stable and their record down under.
ROSTROPOVICH.jpg
24. Rostropovich (21)

COMMENT: He was just okay in the Cox Plate. Sat on speed and fought on well. But his form at 2400m is suspect, so has to be a query at 3200m despite being trained by Aidan O'Brien.

Might-And-Power-melbourne-cup-e150344683
It takes a very good horse to win a Melbourne Cup and each winner goes into the history books although there are some horses who have won the race on multiple occasions which with increase in weights and conditions takes an exceptional horse to do so.

Makybe Diva has won the Melbourne Cup on three occasions with other notable Melbourne Cup winners being Archer who won the first two editions of the race and arguably Australia’s most well known horse Phar Lap who won the race in 1930.

2018 Melbourne Cup form guide: horses, odds, field, who will win, Simon Marshall’s tips

FORMER champion jockey and 15-times Group 1 winner Simon Marshall gives us his insights into all the runners in the 2018 Melbourne Cup.

1. BEST SOLUTION (Barrier 6) Approx win/place odds: $15 / $4. Gutsy Caulfield Cup winner who’s drawn perfectly in gate six. It was a terrific win at Caulfield, and came after back-to-back of Group 1 wins in Germany. Those three wins were over 2400m, but he’s never raced beyond that trip. He’ll settle in the front half and look the winner at some stage, but has to carry topweight of 57.5kg in his first test over this distance. Will need to prove himself every bit as tough as that Caulfield win suggests. Maybe more.

2. THE CLIFFSOFMOHER (9) $15 / $4. Turned in a fantastic run in the Caulfield Cup when third, when he kept coming despite looking under pressure a long way out, after a good fourth in the Caulfield Stakes over 2000m. He’s got a nice alley, one of the world’s best jockeys in Ryan Moore, a master trainer in Aidan O’Brien, and brings good form from some of the biggest races in England. However, it’s his first go beyond 2400m, he hasn’t actually won a lot of races, with three from 17, and he’s got a big weight in 56.5kg. Still, I wouldn’t talk anyone out of backing him.

1 FROM 1: MASTER TRAINER WINS $2M VICTORIA DERBY AT FIRST ATTEMPT

3. MAGIC CIRCLE (17) $9.50 / $3. He’s got great English form, winning his last two by six lengths. Last start was in a 3264m Group 3 at Sandown, beating Red Verdon, who was rated a good chance for this race before being ruled out by injury. The start before he blitzed ‘em in the Chester Cup, when he really attacked the line well at the end of 3749m. The barrier’s a worry, but he’ll contend with that better than most, and the trip’s no problem. Good chance.

4. CHESTNUT COAT (4), $51 / $12. Japanese stayer who went well over 3200m in the Group 1 Tenno Sho in Kyoto three runs back when a close-up fifth, beaten 1.8 lengths. Has a great barrier in four, which hatched last year’s winner Rekindling. He’ll get the trip but he’s a bit hard to recommend on his last-start 13th in the Caulfield Cup.

5. MUNTAHAA (13), $11 / $3. Prepared by one of England’s great trainers in John Gosden, and has a very good jockey in Jim Crowley, who got his eye in with a winning double on Bendigo Cup day last week. He ran only fourth behind Best Solution two starts back over 2414m in a Group 2 at Newmarket, but was left flat-footed when they quickened. But last start he was very impressive winning by 3.25 lengths over the 2816m of the Ebor Handicap at York, usually a good guide to this race. First go at this trip but he’s a big bloke who should get a good spot from barrier 13, and he’s been working well at the Werribee training centre. Strong chance.

6. SOUND CHECK (16), $41 / $10. German import now with a top trainer in Mike Moroney, who won the Cup with Brew in 2000. Chased home Best Solution two starts back in a 2400m Group 1 in Germany, but dudded in the Caulfield Cup next start when 12 th . Did win a 3200m G2 in Germany four starts back, beating the very handy Nearly Caught. He can run the trip but will need luck from his barrier.

7. WHO SHOT THEBARMAN (18), $51 / $12. Having his fourth go at this race, and he always gives an honest account of himself. He finished on well when fourth last start in the Moonee Valley Cup. He’s 10 years of age, so it was an amazing effort from him and his master trainer Chris Waller when they won the 3200m Sydney Cup last autumn. But he’s 10 years of age. They just don’t win this race.

8. ACE HIGH (22), $81 / $20. Aiming to emulate Efficient by winning this race after taking the Victoria Derby a year before, but he disappointed in the Caulfield Cup when 15 th after leading. Mind you, that was on soft ground, which he doesn’t like, and it should be good going in this race. He looks like he’ll stay the trip, though he hasn’t been past 2500m, but still you’d like to have seen him do more at Caulfield. Also has an awful barrier here.

9. MARMELO (10), $18 / $4. Now here’s an interesting France-based runner. Last year he flew home for sixth in the Caulfield Cup, but then disappointed in this race as equal-favourite when ninth. The stable said he didn’t back up well from Caulfield last year, so he’s coming in with no Australian lead-up run this time. He’s been in good form with wins over 2800m and two seconds over 3000m at his past four starts. Should get nice cover from barrier 10, and has the two Hughs behind him — jockey Bowman, who’s a genius, and trainer Morrison, who’s a great trainer of stayers. With not too bad a weight, at 55kg, this one’s a chance.

10. AVILIUS (11), $13 / $4. Ticks lots of boxes. Adapted to Australia very well after joining the James Cummings stable from Europe, with wins in his first four Australian starts. The latest of those was over 2500m at Flemington in The Bart Cummings, where he beat Jaameh, who ran a good third on Saturday. Avilius’ last start fourth in the Cox Plate was a very good effort when he finished on. In France, he ran second to the great Cracksman over 2400m last year, with another Cup runner, Finche, third. However, Avilius hasn’t raced beyond the 2500m of The Bart Cummings, and wobbled in under pressure at the end of that race, which doesn’t bode well for the 3200m. But he’s a classy type with great acceleration, which you need at the end of this race. Chance.

11. YUCATAN (23), $4.80 / $2. Here he is, our clear Cup favourite. He brained ‘em in his lead-up run, in the 2400m Herbert Power Stakes, when he could’ve won by eight lengths if not eased up. That was a much better run than Protectionist turned in when fourth in that race before winning the 2014 Melbourne Cup. However, Yucatan didn’t beat great horses in that last start of his. And he hasn’t been beyond 2400m, and will have to overcome a horror barrier draw here and step up to the 3200m. He deserves to be favourite on his last run, but … that barrier!

12. AUVRAY (1), $126 / $30. Honest eight-year-old and good on him for getting a run. Has won at 3000m, but that was in France four years ago. Not keen.

13. FINCHE (15), $31 / $8. This bloke might’ve got under the radar a bit. Joined the Chris Waller stable from France recently and turned in a terrific first-up Australian run when finishing on strong for third in the 2400m Geelong Cup, which is usually a good guide for this. Has impressive European form, including winning over 2500m at Deauville last start, beating Tiberian, who was seventh in last year’s Melbourne Cup. Six starts back he finished third behind Cracksman, and the start before that he beat Avilius into third over 2000m. Tricky barrier but has a gun jockey to help in Zac Purton. I quite like him.

14. RED CARDINAL (5), $101 / $25. Won twice over 3200m in group races in America and Germany last year, but that seems a long time ago now. Last start ran poorly when 11 th in the Moonee Valley Cup. Has a good barrier, and Damien Oliver picks up the ride late on, but that’s about all you can say for him.

15. VENGEUR MASQUE (2), $67 / $15. He’s an honest type who always seems to finish on, like when he made ground late to come ninth, beaten less than five lengths, in the Caulfield Cup. Still, he’s unplaced in his past six runs, and barrier two might be the best thing about him.

16. VENTURA STORM (7), $31 / $8. Comes in after winning the 2600m Moonee Valley Cup, finally cracking it for a win after 17 Australian starts since coming from Europe. Prince Of Penzance finished second in that race before winning the Cup in 2015. However, this bloke has failed at two 3200m runs in Australia, in last year’s Melbourne Cup and then the Sydney Cup, so the distance is a query. Still, trainer David Hayes is very bullish about his chances.

17. A PRINCE OF ARRAN (20), $16 / $4. Tough English stayer who surged into contention, and into this field in fact, with a terrific lead-up run in winning the Lexus Stakes over 2500m on Saturday, after a third in Yucatan’s Herbert Power. He’s won over 3200m on the turf in Dubai, and placed over the trip in America and England before coming here. The question mark with the Lexus winner is always the quick back-up, though Shocking did it to win the Cup in 2009. In his favour, he’s only had two runs this preparation. Shocking barrier though.

18. NAKEETA (3), $126 / $30. Scotland’s hope who ran well for fifth in this race last year. Doesn’t seem to be in that kind of form now though, after his poor 13th in the Moonee Valley Cup. Looking elsewhere.

19. SIR CHARLES ROAD (14), $101 /$25. Fought on when third in last week’s Bendigo Cup, but that’s probably not a great recommendation for the Melbourne Cup. Might give this one a miss.

20. ZACADA (24), $201 / $50. Came second over this trip in the Sydney Cup last autumn, but his form this preparation has been awful. Last start 12 th in the Geelong Cup. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he’s drawn the outside barrier.

21. RUNAWAY (12), $41 /$10. Great to see Gai Waterhouse with another runner, who came into contention by leading all the way in the Geelong Cup. That was a peach of a ride from Stephen Baster, who’s on again here. First go at this trip but did lead throughout to win the 2800m VRC St Leger here last autumn, so should get the distance. Will probably lead and should give you a run for your money for a long way if you’re on him.

22. YOUNGSTAR (8), $19 / $4. Very classy stayer from the Chris Waller yard who gave the great Winx a run for her money when second in the Turnbull Stakes two starts back. She then ran on well in the Caulfield Cup when seventh, running the fastest last 200m of the race, despite having lost a shoe. It’s hard for a four-year-old mare to win this race though, but she’ll give an honest account, and from a good barrier, with a tiny weight.

23. CROSS COUNTER (19), $11 / $3. Now here’s a horse I like, one of these English stayers getting in with only 51kg on his back. Great trainer in Charlie Appleby, and great jockey in Kerrin McEvoy, who’s won this race twice, and is a man you want in the saddle if you’ve drawn barrier 19. Strong last start second in a 2400m Group 2 at York, and third-placegetter Kew Gardens has since won the 2800m St Leger. Start before, won a 2400m Group 3 at Goodwood in track record time. I’ve watched his English races and he’s got the tactical speed to overcome his wide alley, and has been training the house down at Werribee. The one I’d want to be riding.

24. ROSTROPOVICH (21), $26 / $5. Another lightweight chance from the O’Brien stable, who rate him highly. Showed good speed to lead in the Cox Plate before finishing fifth. That catches your attention: a European horse, having a lead-up run for this, in the Cox Plate. It’s unusual, and suggests he must have needed it, and will take benefit from it. Moonee Valley might not have suited him that day either, because he’s a big boy. He’s lightly raced, with just 13 starts, and it’s his first go past 2400m, but you think he’ll be better suited by the open spaces of Flemington. Barrier 21 is a worry though.

A punter will be letting a massive racing multi-bet ride into Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup to collect over $1 million dollars from just a $60 outlay.

The punter placed a $60 three leg racing multi at Ladbrokes in August with two of the legs already saluting over the weekend and they are now only sweating on Magic Circle to win the Melbourne Cup to collect whopping $1,030,200.

Multi:

Leg 1: Sunlight to win the Coolmore Stud Stakes at $10
Leg 2: Extra Brut to win the Victoria Derby at $101
Leg 3: Magic Circle to win the Melbourne Cup at $17

Magic Circle has been the best backed runner in lead up to the race and could even vie for favouritism if the money continues, he is currently an $8 chance in Melbourne Cup odds with favourite Yucatan drifting since the barrier draw from $4.50 out to $6.00.
