The next round of La Liga matches are coming up this weekend. The odds and ratings are displayed above. Real Madrid begin life after Julen Lopetegui. Will Gareth Bale prove his critics wrong? I also read a fascinating article about how 80% of Athletic Bilbao's first team are graduates from their youth academy. I know the odds are stacked against them here against Espanyol but reading that inspired me to want to back them for some obscure reason! Let's hear your tips for this week's action anyway! :ok

Espanyol vs Athletic Bilbao

La Liga dishes up an intriguing game this Monday night in an 8pm kick-off at the RCDE Stadium when Espanyol play Athletic Bilbao. The home side will want to win to keep in touch with the league leaders and the away side need to start picking up points as soon as possible to avoid slipping into the relegation zone.

Espanyol have looked emphatic under Rubi this season. The Barcelona-based side are just 3 points behind the league leaders and city rivals after a draw last week. Their position in 5th after 10 games is far better than anyone could have anticipated. Their fans will be hoping the draw away to Real Valladolid last week isn't the start of a downturn in results.

Athletic Bilbao were at the centre of a really interesting article in the English media this week about how they rely so much on their youth academy due to their self-imposed rules about favouring Basque nationality players. Unfortunately, this Basque policy is not helping them this season. Eduardo Berizzo's side are in 16th place with just 10 points from 10 league games. That puts them just 2 points above the relegation zone but that could be an even worse predicament come kick-off after all the other games have been played.

I bet against Espanyol last week and I was right to do so. They dropped points on the road but they are back on home turf this week. They possess a 100% record at home and even though Athletic Bilbao have drawn 7 of their 10 league games including all four of their away games I think the home side will win here.
