Nantes vs Caen

We're into week 3 of the Ligue 1 season already and we cover a match involving a team that are surprisingly bottom of the table after two games with 20th placed Nantes facing 15th Caen in a 7pm kick-off this Saturday evening at the Stade de la Beaujoire-Louis Fonteneau.

It's not been the best of starts to the season for the Canaries. New head coach Miguel Cardoso has been brought in to replace Claudio Ranieri after it was deemed their 9th place finish last season wasn't good enough. Cardoso might have failed to get a point yet but their performances against Monaco and Dijon in their opening two games have suggested better is to come.

In fact, against Monaco, despite losing 3-1, Nantes dominated the shooting and passing stats. They just couldn't score the goals. Unfortunately, against Dijon, Nantes once again out-passed their opponents but Dijon sucker punched Cardoso's side with two goals on the counter. Nantes failed to get a single shot on target in that game despite bossing the possession.

Caen have managed to get 1 more point than Nantes. That's not too bad considering their first game was against PSG and their second was against Nice. In that second game, they led until the 82nd minute but were denied all three points. In what is Fabien Mercadal's first full season in charge of the club, he'll be looking to try and steer them away from a relegation fight for a change.

This stage of the season is always hard to call. Especially when both sides have had tough fixtures to start and the managers of both sides are new in their roles. I think Nantes have a lot more to show us and should get the win. Caen are showing glimpses of a side that could prove hard to beat as they get used to Mercedal's system that did him so well at Paris FC. I think a home win here in a low-scoring game is the bet combination to punt for.
