PSG vs Monaco

The top two sides from Ligue 1 last season come face-to-face in the French Super Cup this weekend when PSG play Monaco in a 1pm kick-off this Saturday at the Shenzhen Universiade Sports Centre. Yes, that's right. This game is being played in China... modern football hey?!

PSG won Ligue 1 by a canter last season finishing 13 points clear of Monaco with just 3 losses all season in league competition. Les Parisiens have done a fair bit of business during the summer transfer window. More players going out than coming in though. Kylian Mbappe's transfer has been made permanent and new manager Thomas Tuchel has also moved to sign veteran keeper Gianluigi Buffon after his departure from Juventus.

The departures are slightly controversial with a number of big name players leaving the club. These include Thiago Motta, Hatem Ben Arfa, Javier Pastore, Yuri Berchiche, Odsonne Edouard, and Jonathan Ikone. Granted, none were really seen as key players but if injuries hit then not replacing these squad members could be a problem.

Monaco will be looking to put more pressure on their rivals this season. Leonardo Jardim was linked with a number of managerial vacancies, including the Arsenal job briefly, over the summer but he remains in charge at Stade Louis II. Jardim will almost certainly have wanted to strengthen more than he has. The signing of Aleksandr Golovin could boost their hopes and the transfer of 16 year-old French starlet Willem Geubbels could prove inspired over years to come. I'm not seeing anything that suggests their transfer business will do much to close the gap between themselves and PSG though.

Therefore I have to go with my feeling that PSG will win this game. It might be a close one because it's not exactly the most competitive fixture of the season. I just feel PSG have too much in attack and Monaco won't be able to match that prowess. A high-scoring thriller could be on the cards.
