Southend vs Walsall

It isn't often that heading into a week of betting previews the thought occurs that picking out a game involving Southend and Walsall will be the best option! No offence to these two clubs but they are arguably two of the least fashionable sides in the entire Football League.

Southend are currently positioned in 13th place in League One but are unbeaten in the league since Chris Powell replaced Phil Brown as manager. His reign so far has seen 4 wins and 1 draw in 5 league games. That has included his side scoring 3 goals in every home game they have played. Impressive stuff by the new gaffer. Things are a little less progressive for Walsall. Jon Whitney's team are positioned in 17th place and haven't won in 3 league matches. They are now just 5 points above the relegation zone.

This is a game where my selection picks itself. I am backing Powell to guide his team to yet another home win. I also think there will be at least 2.5 goals in this match. The Shrimpers could well be that one side that gate crash the play-offs and if they do reach that stage then you'd have to fancy them to upset others and even potentially get promoted. A long way to go yet but Powell is working his magic at Roots Hall. Get on them!

Or are you waiting to see how the weather develops?

Edit: Delight to see that Southend are aware that I've now written a preview for their game and will do everything within their power to make sure it goes ahead this Saturday!

Cambridge vs Luton

On a day when the heavy snow up and down the UK has caused a number of games in League 1, League 2, and Scottish football to be postponed, we are dipping into a selection of games that we normally might not consider. This clash in League 2 involves one of the most exciting yet unpredictable (in terms of betting) sides in the shape of Luton.

Cambridge come into this game in 14th place. It already looks like a dead rubber season for the club. Caretaker manager Joe Dunne is hoping to carry them over the line after the sacking of Shaun Derry. New owner Paul Barry is set to pick a replacement for Derry and with the club 9 points off the play-offs but also 18 points clear of relegation, appointing a new manager to build for next season seems a logical step. A step the club is yet to take.

Luton are flying high at the top of the League 2 table on 68 points. Nathan Jones' side are 3 points clear of second placed Accrington Stanley and 7 points ahead of fourth place. Promotion really is theirs to lose. The Hatters have already scored 74 goals in 34 games. This has included scoring 8 goals in one game, 7 goals in two games, 5 goals in one game, and 4 goals in two games. However, only one of those scoring routs came away from home.

The away side are the favourites coming into this game and rightly so. Even so, the form of the U's has vastly improved since Derry's departure with the club winning 3, drawing 1, and losing 1 of their 5 games so far. Crucially, they remain unbeaten at home under Dunne.

I'm half tempted to tip Cambridge to take something from this game. They seem a lot tougher to beat under Dunne's management and Luton have been a bit rocky on the road recently with just 1 win in their last 4 away league games. This is far from a given for Luton and they'll do well to get a win here.
