Little Nuggets in August

Cartmel:

Quirky track, if you haven't been stick it on your list of must go to courses.

Although the likes Donald McCain and Jimmy Moffatt have lots of winners at Cartmel they also have boat loads of runners. Surprisingly the best strike rate over the last 5 years belongs to Tim Easterby with 3 winners from just 9 runners. Kenneth Slack also does well with few runners.

On Sunday

T.Easterby has one runner - 5.00 What A Game

K.Slack has two runners- 2.20 Oh So Gigilo and 5.00 Omid.

Another stat about Cartmel, the favourites have a terrible record in handicaps at the track compared to non-handicaps.

Only 23% of favourites in handicaps have won in the last 5 years, (42% non-handicaps)

trainer a m balding doesnt have many runners over the border,

but has 2 today at hamilton where he has a 50% win rate, albeit 1 winner from 2 runners, with the other being placed.

todays 2 are

1530 highland colori  best price 16/1 will hill, 14/1 and 12/1 elsewhere

1500 torcello best price 5/6  most firms

liam keniry on both and has a 14% win strike rate with this trainer and its only 2 rides of the day, and i cant find any evidence that the jockey has been at this track before

Thirsk

Charlie Appleby has had 6 winners at Thirsk from 22 runners in the last 5 years, nothing to write home about for sure. Much more interesting is that jockey Martin Lane has ridden 5 of those 6 winners.

Today they team up with one horse;

Thirsk 5.00; Tribal Conquest 13/8 Ladbrokes

Ripon

I've always thought Ripon was a specialist's track, its very up and down in the home straight and only horses with good balance can stride out there. With that in mind trainers will often only bring a certain type of horse here and its interesting to see that Willie Haggas has a much better record around here than any other trainer.

Over the last 5 years he has had 19 winners from 51 runners (37%), the next best is Bin Suroor with 26% from just 19 runners.

Haggas has one runner today making the 360 mile round trip.

  • 2 weeks later...

Interesting that Noel Fehily and Richard Johnson have decided to go to Cartmel on Saturday despite a couple of big summer races taking place at Market Rasen.

Fehily in particular is a strange one as he has only had 2 rides at the track since 2009 and one of those was a winner. He rides 2 for Neil Mulholland who himself is a rare visitor to the track, he has had 2 winners from 13 runners in the last 5 years.

415: Prettylittlething
525: Owners Day

Richard Johnson has ridden here many times and had 16 winners in the same period but he doesn't have many for his boss Philip Hobbs, he has only had 5 runners here since 2012 and had one winner. They team up with one runner although Johnson does have other rides.

frank dettori,

seems to be choosing his rides since his injury, he was down for 2 this afternoon at ascot, but one is a non runner, and he had 3 for newmarket tonite and now has only one, and with his booking for enable tomorrow at his minimum weight, he seems to be confident getting to this weight, after his time off,

1520 ascot nasthra 5/2 freely available

2010 newmarket pouvoir magique freely available 11/8

Luca Cumani

Cumani surprisingly has only had half a dozen runners at Chester in the last five seasons, two of those have won so obviously is not a big fan of the twists and turns and trains a more galloping type of horse.

He sends one up today which has had 3 starts and not really made much impression as of yet, last time didn't seem to act on the AW at Kempton and has been given a modest mark of 73. You would have thought he might have gone handicapping now sends his filly here for a maiden.

Top Chester jockey Richard Kingscote has been booked.

345 Chester: Paris Rooftops 15/2 Bet365

Market Rasen 4.40 Pennies and Pounds

Here's one worth taken a chance with at small stakes on the basis of the trainers record in handicaps at the track.  Julian Smith's record reads R9 W6 P8 £8.86 £10.00 and when Mark Grant is in the saddle it's R6 W3 P3 £37.00 £43.00.  You can get 3 places with bet365, bet victor and stan james (40/1 at 1/5 odd for a place) or 4 and 5 places with betfair (16/1 and 10/1 respectively)

  • BillyHills changed the title to Little Nuggets in August

1530 pontefract

icefall best form seems to over todays distance of 12 furlongs

all 3 wins have been at this distance

is already a course and distance winner

hes back from a short break (30 days) but his last race was after a near 300 day break at 10 furlongs

should be better today, helped by short forecast fav is a non runner

only downside is mark johnston likes this race , 3 wins out of 7, and saddles the sometimes frustrating senockian star
