I think Real Madrid are obvious favourites and even though I would like to see Bale score the winner in his home city I still have to back Juventus to win. It just feels like they are destined to win it this season. I also think it would be poetic for Buffon to finally win that elusive Champions League medal.

My bets are likely to be Cristiano Ronaldo to score any time because I'm fairly he will but Juventus to win by any method. This could well go down to pens. What a story it would be if Buffon saved the penalty that wins Juventus the trophy. Sorry, @Notorious:D

I do think Real Madrid will win if I'm honest, but that's only if they bring their A Game, as anything else will play into Juve's hands. Really surprised to see the betting so close as I'd have put Real closer to 2.20 ish. It's a game to watch rather than bet on for me, hopefully Juve come to play and not defend. ;)

Unfortunately, I think the Old Lady are going to defend the living daylights out of this game and rely on the counter!

I don't wanna say that Real are just lucky but they never have any bad luck. It's always the right bounce, the right deflection, the right red card for the opponent or the right wrong call for them. Juventus were obviously the better team in the first half. Then Real come out pushing more in the second half and they just need a little more than 5 minutes and a shot from Casemiro that wouldn't have gotten in, gets deflected and falls perfectly into the net. Then Juve defense is shocked for a little while and they score again. It's amazing. They just never miss by a few inches in those kind of situations, and that is luck too.

Do you think?

I say the best teams make their own luck. Fine margins come into play in a game like this, and it's the team that takes it to the edge of every play and every chance and makes sure they are on the right side of that fine line that go on to win.

I think they were insanely effective and also had a nice portion of luck. Just think about the two games vs Bayern. Vidal misses a penalty to make it 2-0 before the half time break. Then a few minutes into the second half Ronaldo scores and later a Bayern player sees a red card. Or their performance in Napoli. Napoli has a great chance to make it 2-0 but hits the post. Then they get one corner and Ramos scores to kill off the game. The same in Calderon where they are 2-0 behind, get one good chance and score. When they needed to score a goal, they scored it right away. They never missed.

Fine margins mate. Great teams never miss - they make their own luck and appear to be fortunate but really they just have the split second reactions necessary to curl a ball just right or time a fall so an opposition player gets carded.

It's a subconscious thing that all the best players have, they will the Universe to do what they want and believe it will, and viola! It does lol

As I wrote in my analysis on site: "There is one other thing, which needed to be mentioned at Real Madrid and even if it's not from tactical point of view, and that is self-confidence, winning mentality. We could even say that there is not just a will or a desire to win, they simply know that they will win and that's why they are so successful recently."

And that's what happened. Juve scored amazing goal, they started playing much better, it even looked for a few minutes, that they are taking the game in their hands, but then happened. Casemiro shot from "nowhere", Khedira touched the ball and Gigi was without chances. Who knows what would happen with 1st goal of Ronaldo, if Bonucci wouldn't touched the ball...

Second thing: "Weaknesses will be decisive for sure in this match. Even though it's a good question what is the meaning of weakness as both clubs are on top level, but the team who will concede the goal due to their own bigger error, will find themselves in tough position."

While third goal.. simply error in position where it shouldn't have happened. Especially not to Juventus. Moreover, I cannot even remember one match, where Juventus did such a mistake. Real was simply there, and "finished" the match.

About my American "friend". Obviously he knows a lot and it's a shame, that he is banned, but his way of communication is ... . Instead of talking normally (I cannot even use a word politely when it comes to him) all the time accusing everyone for everything possible who wasn't thinking exactly the same (as English isn't my first foreign language, I have learned a lot new words to swear from him :) ). In my analysis, I was actually talking really respectful about Real Madrid, but for him, I am a cule and I am saying bullshit.

All in all, congrats to Real Madrid for breaking the history. In my opinion it was a season where top clubs weren't on the highest level. With that I mean especially Barcelona and Bayern, who had lots of problems during the season. Next season will be more interesting, as we'll see Chelsea (specialist for knockout matches) back in CL, as well as some other EPL teams, but I think that 2 of them will fail to qualify out of group stage. :D

@vasilli07 some good analysis of the game here from a poster on Quora.com:

"There were five main reasons Juventus  lost

  1. Higuain fails to impress in a big game, yet again - It has almost become sort of a thing since he joined Juve. He has consistently failed to impress during the big games. When it comes to his price tag, I don’t think he has justified it with his goal scoring form. Yet for some reason people expect Pogba, a midfielder to rack up 20 goals a season from midfield yet Higuain is given the cold shoulder. A lack of an attack resulted in a poor showing in front of goal. Yes, Mandzukic was able to score, but does that really justify a good show in front? Definitely not.
  2. Defending deep against the best attack in the competition - Juventus came out of the tunnel with a different mentality: defend deep, invite pressure, and if possible, hit them on the counter attack or leave the game as is and hold out until the end in the hope of extra time or even penalties. This was a poor decision as Barzagli was an isolated target in Madrid’s tactics, and his poor marking for Ronaldo’s goal (don’t quite remember which one) only worsened Juve’s condition.
  3. No fluidity or control in the second half from Juve - Juve entered the field in the second half with defending deep in mind, and this mentality harmed them because they overfocused on defence, leading to misplaced passes directly to any of Madrid’s lethal midfielders, who could distribute the ball quickly over the backline and hope Ronaldo would finish it. This was clearly visible when Mandzukic waited too long for the ball to come to him, and Madrid took advantage of this with Modric crossing it in for Ronaldo to score his second.
  4. All over the place tactics by Madrid - Not quite in a bad sense, but in a good sense. Madrid pulled the ball and Juve to one wing when in possession, and tended to play through the wings rather than Juve’s central approach. Once accomplished, a long pass to switch wings and boom, you have ample space to run into (see image below). All of Real Madrid’s goals came from intense wing play. First was from a Carvajal pass, second involved wing play before the shot from centre, third was a cross from the right edge of the box, and the fourth from the left. Juve struggled and as a result, had to bring on Cuadrado for a struggling Barzagli, resulting in Dani Alves switching to a CB-like role. This proved key as Juve didn’t have any defensive protection on the wings as they had two attackers, Cuadrado and Mandzukic, playing the wings which further weakened their defence. With Cuadrado gone for the fourth goal, it only made it easier for Marcelo to pass it to Asensio. Another key tactic Real used was to use man-to-man presurring and overcrowding the area where the ball was to obtain possession. Once they got the ball, Real’s fast pace helped in the counterattack against an aging Juve defence. It was as if Juve’s defence was a train trying to keep up with Real’s aeroplane.

5. Ronaldo - He's been on fire since the Knockout Stages began, scoring two hattricks in the QF and SF against Bayern and Atletico respectively. Given the tactical outclassing by Real, it only made his job easier as both his goals came from very poor marking. It's a shame he didn't get the hattrick.

In the end, Juventus came out as a completely different team, and a lack of a clear plan led to letting in 3. Dybala was missing for the second half, Higuain was good as not even playing, and Cuadrado didn’t deserve that sending off. Perhaps Juve might have had an opportunity to do something with 11 on the field. All these factors, combined with Real’s rejuvenated tactics, only hindered their chances for Champions Legaue glory.

That supposed “foul” on Ramos by Cuadrado needs to be looked at by a panel of elite referees, and Ramos definitely needs to be punished for a clear cut demonstration of over-exaggeration. It would at least kick some sense into him."

Nicely written. And yes, especially after half-time changes Juventus was outplayed tactically and even if people are saying that Zidane is far from tactical specialist he proved them wrong. Well him or his coaching staff (probably all together, but normally managers are taking all the credits for positive and negative scenarios). But on the other hand Real Madrid has an goalscorer (Ronaldo), while Juventus.. everything but that. Moreover, Higuain played for all 90 minutes. I would probably substitute him in 60-65th minute, or at least try to change something up there, because it was too obvious that their plan isn't working.

We are used to see people praising Juve's defence.. Real Madrid recovered the ball 12 times more, they had more tackles and same number of clearances. One more time, Casemiro played amazing! And not because of the goal, but because of defensive work.

p.s. As it's written:

Quote

Juventus came out of the tunnel with a different mentality: defend deep, invite pressure, and if possible, hit them on the counter attack or leave the game as is and hold out until the end in the hope of extra time or even penalties.

Exactly. Generally I totally agree with Guardiola's quote (obviously :D): "My job is to bring you up until the last third of the field". I had feeling, that Juventus was without offensive plan for the match.
