Goias vs Atletico Go

This is the Goiania derby, pitting the 16th-placed Goias against the joint table-leader Atletico-Go (Vasco Da Gama is ahead only on goal difference). Despite the 14-point difference on the table, both teams have got 8 points from their respective last five games; both conceding only 3 goals but Atletico scoring 6 goals compared to 5 for Goias. This may indicate that despite their current placement on the table, Goias have begun to recover from their poor start to the championship and are almost on similar form with their opponents. Both teams have used the entire week (without mid-week fixtures) to prepare for this derby.

Both teams face two absences; Goias is missing suspended defender Anderson Salles and injured midfielder David, while Atletico is missing main striker Junior Vicosa and left-back Romario. Goias Coach Leo Conde's training this week focused on eliminating individual errors (he has even replaced the error-prone goal-keeper Renan for this game), neutralizing the strengths of Atletico and exploiting their weaknesses. He has particularly worked on improving the team's attack, bringing back the pacy Rossi (returned from suspension) to partner Carlos Eduardo. Atletico-Go Coach  Marcelo Cabo has also opted for double attack of  Gilsinho and Alison - both of whom starred in the previous 3-0 win over Nautico.

Like in every local derby, bragging rights are at stake; with Goias seeking to re-establish its standing as the traditional powerhouse in Goiania (bagging state championships and playing in the Serie A) and Atletico seeing itself as the rising force. It will be a packed Serra Dourada stadium. Am expecting a fiercely contested derby with goals. Over 2.5 goals.

Parana vs Paysandu

The host team has come under fan pressure to attack more after their last game, a 0-0 draw at home to Avai on Tuesday a week ago. The team is also keen to improve its goal difference of zero (scored 14 and conceded 14), which may be key in the its promotion bid. Coach Marcelo Martelotte, who has turned around the team's form since his appointment one month ago, has had his first full week with the team without a league fixture. Having earlier focused on defensive stability of the team, he has used this week giving more attention to the offensive side, particularly on how to overcome the defensive posture of Paysandu. During training, emphasis was on fast breaks and speed to beat the opponent's defence. Coach Martelotte may finally be able to field the attacking quartet of Valber, Nadson, Robson and Lucio Flavio. Defender Leandro Silva returns from suspension and midfielder Jean has recovered from injury.

The visitors, Paysandu, also come from a 0-0 draw with Londrina and have not conceded a goal in eight league matches! However, they missed a penalty late in that game and fans so blamed striker Betinho that Coach Gilmar Dal Pozzo has decided to leave him out of this match, along with fellow striker Ruan. Nevertheless, the coach's final preparations focused on positioning,  attack and creating chances. Central Midfielder Augusto Recife returns from suspension.

Both teams are under pressure to attack and both could react in this respect. BTTS and Over 2.5 goals.

Oeste vs Brasil Pelotas

Since sealing its partnership with Audax Sao Paulo in May, the home team has been rotating its home games and this one will be played in Arena Barueri in Greater Sao Paulo, about 250km from its traditional home ground in Itapolis. Despite its mid-table position (14th), the team has attracted attention because of the methodology of the Coach Fernando Diniz, who espouses one-touch football that took Audax Sao Paulo to the final of the Sao Paulo state championship. To date, the team has exchanged a total of 8,384 passes with 92.5% accuracy (compared to 3,248 passes of the visiting team). However, Oeste is generally believed  to be performing below expectations in terms of results. For this game, Coach Fernando Diniz has been re-united with attacking midfielder Rodolfo (ex- Audax Sao Paulo bought by Flamengo but returned on loan), and this could improve the attacking third of the home team. However, the team still misses defender Andrea Castro as well as attackers Maurinho and Ricardo Bueno; plus right-back Velicka who is suspended following the latest game against Avai.

The visitors are coming from a 2-2 home draw against Vila Nova, in which the home team uncharacteristically conceded two early first-half goals and had to rally back to snatch a draw. They will be keen to improve their defence in this game; and will be bolstered by the return of defensive kingpin Cirillo.

Therefore, this is a game with home team imposing its control of possession while the visitors will seek to avoid defensive mistakes. Under 2.5 goals.

What odds did you have on those selections? Unlucky to be let down by CRB. Would have been one hell of an acca!

Could not make detailed preview but my selections are as follows:

Nautico vs Criciuma

Hosts have recovered and seem to be gaining momentum; while visitors still have more issues to resolve. Home win.

Avai vs Bahia

Both teams desperate to recover lost points and both keen to attack. BTTS and Over 2.5 goals.

Goias vs Tupi

Both teams face issues in the offensive sector. Under 2.5 goals.

Paysandu vs Ceara

Hosts now have offensive momentum with new attacking acquisitions; while visitors' midfield is weakened but attack still strong and keen to remain in the G4. BTTS and Over 2.5 goals.

Ceara vs CRB

Hosts seek recovery after three games without a win (two earlier draws and the most recent 2-0 away loss to Paysandu). Team will miss left-winger Thallyson due to a virus. The main change is the return of key central midfielder Richardson from suspension, ensuring greater power marking and more dynamism in the sector. Important striker Bill will also be available after he was acquitted of crowd provocation and the two-game suspension set aside.

The visitors are under fan pressure following lethargic displays in recent games; ie team has not won in four games (two home losses and two away draws) and has kept fourth position simply because of the results elsewhere in the championship. A further loss to Ceara means that the team will exit the G4 promotion zone this weekend. Team has particularly suffered at home because the opposing teams come with the singular mission of creating a defensive barrier. But CRB is banking on its good away performances (second in the championship); mainly because home teams open up to attack and CRB exploits though its own fast attacks.  Absent is central midfielder Matheus Galdezani (red-carded in the last game) and fringe striker Rodolfo (left the club by mutual agreement on Thursday). Meanwhile right-back Marcos Martins returns from suspension and central midfielder Gladyson Almeida also returns from long term injury.

Hosts intend to attack and get a win at home to consolidate in G4. This will suit the desperate visitors, to spring their own attacking game. It is likely to be a tense affair, with each team not ready to lose. BTTS

Result:    Ceara 1-1 CRB
