South Africa vs England Test series

4pts SA to win the first test at 11/8 with Skybet

South Africa suffered their first away series defeat in nearly ten years, against India this Autumn. And they left the subcontinent with real concerns over how some of their players can play spin, albeit on a few questionable surfaces.

Luckily for them, England’s most dangerous spinner is making waves in the Big Bash, and instead they’ll have to cope with the part time spin of Moeen Ali, or the even more part time spin of Samit Patel.

Conditions in South Africa do tend to favour seam slightly more than tweak, but the problem for England comes when you look at the home side’s seam attack. Steyn, Morkel and Rabada. Three 90mph speed demons, each bringing something new to the table. Steyn is the number one bowler in the world, England have always struggled with Morkels bounce, and Rabada is the new kid on the block.

It remains to be seen who England pick, but if Gary Ballance starts, he may take guard behind the stumps

Where cracks appeared last time for South Africa, they now have Rilee Rossouw in the squad. He may replace the faltering Stiaan Van Zyl or Dean Elgar. Hashim Amla has something to prove - he looked tired and out of form in India, where the surfaces should have played to his strengths. He’ll return to his home tracks hoping to show once again that he has the ability to be one of the top players in the world.

England have suffered a blow for the first test, where they may be without Jimmy Anderson who has a sore calf. He would be a huge miss as leader of the attack and team talisman. If he doesn’t play it’s hard to see England getting the 20 wickets they need. Granted they have Steve Finn in top form and Stuart Broad, but in these hot conditions, they’ll need much more.

4pts South Africa to win the second test at 13/8 with Ladbrokes

The visitors are well advised to be wary of the Proteas’ threat. Not just because they have a real nemesis in Morne Morkel, but because their own batting performance left a little to be desired. Granted the hosts were much worse.

There are still real problems at the top of the order, with Alex Hales making a shaky start, and Alastair Cook looking uncertain in attack against the extra bounce. One of the biggest factors in England mustering a competitive total in the first game was the fact that they pick ten capable batsmen every game. Moeen Ali at eight is just obscene. That said, the bowling attack does look balanced.

For the home side, the changes have been rung. Stiaan van Zyl has finally been given the boot after a dismal run. He is replaced by Quinton de Kock who we really like as a player. He showed awesome stroke play in India and has proved a valuable part of the ODI squad. As a full time keeper, it is likely that he’ll take the glove from AB de Villiers and give the great man chance to concentrate on his batting. His introduction to this team comes on the back of a rapid ton in his last first-class match. He will strengthen them.

Filling the enormous bowling boots of Dale Steyn will probably be Kagiso Rabada, who is one of the most promising young fast bowlers in the world. The 20 year-old got something of a baptism of fire in India, where he never really got into the game in any of the three tests. However, back on home soil, he will offer a different proposition. Able to bowl in excess of 90mph and with a liking for a bouncer, the notoriously shaky technique against the short ball of England’s top order may be exposed.

The Proteas’ bowling strength has never been in doubt; they performed well in Durban. It’s their batting they need to fix. The introduction of De Kock will go some way to doing that. They have a raft of high-class players who are not used to the chastening defeats of late. The likes of Amla, Du Plessis and Duminy will have a point to prove, and I think they will, at a ground where their record is very good.

4pts South Africa to win the third test with Boylesports

Ben Stokes lit up Newlands last time, playing a knock that will live long in the memory, while Jonny Bairstow was far from ordinary with his maiden test ton and the emotional celebrations that followed.

For the home side, it was out-going captain Hashim Amla who returned to his immovable best with a massive score, supported by the history making Bavuma. It was what happened in the third innings that is most interesting.

On a placid pitch, a South Africa minus Dale Steyn reduced England to 130-odd for six. That will give Rabada, Morkel and Morris and co some real heart.

For England, there are still real problems at the top of the order, with Alex Hales making a shaky start, and Alastair Cook looking uncertain in attack against the extra bounce. One of the biggest factors in England mustering a competitive total in the first game was the fact that they pick ten capable batsmen every game. Moeen Ali at eight is just obscene. That said, the bowling attack does look balanced.

Adding Quinton de Kock seemed to give a little more balance to a batting line-up that needed some hunger adding, where JP Duminy, Faf Du Plessis and Stiaan van Zyl could all have drawn straws to be left out.

It’s funny how series like this can turn on a session of play, and this may be the case here. The impetus in-coming captain ABDV will bring will be huge.

4ts England to win at 7/5 with Boylesports

The big question is, where do South Africa go from here. There are question marks over whether AB de Villiers will continue to lead the test team beyond this match, and some of their more experienced players are very much fighting for their place. That includes Faf du Plessis and JP Duminy.

They have tried to address their top order woes by dropping Stiaan van Zyl and replacing him with 33-year old debutant, Stephen Cook. He has been in top form for his domestic side, but Van Zyl found out just how difficult it is to make the step up.

Quinton de Kock returns to the side in place of Dane Vilas, who showed some great glove work in the last game.

The main issue is not the players they have. In fact until the third innings, they were right in the game in Jo’berg. The problem they have is their capacity for a collapse. And England have been disciplined enough to put them under pressure and wait for errors.

The England side is a pretty settled one, although they will again be without Steven Finn, who has been ruled out of the remainder of the our with injury. His replacement is likely to be either Mark Footitt or Chris Woakes. I would be especially keen to have a look at the former Derbyshire left-armer, Footitt, with his express pace and cutting edge. He’s the variety that may be missing from the England unit at the moment.

So far only Alex Hales, James Taylor, and to a lesser extent, Alastair Cook have struggled for runs. And even they have managed the odd start to stay in a bit of touch.

It’s hard to see South Africa turning this around, with morale low and a lot of players under the additional pressure of playing for their careers.
