Re: Daily Racing Chat Thread "Photographs at Aqueduct Racetrack: Where Horses Race, but No One Wins" - http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/04/nyregion/photographs-at-aqueduct-racetrack-where-horses-race-but-no-one-wins.html Interesting little piece, particularly the shots taken by photographer Theo Zierock, who spent last winter shooting Aqueduct Racetrack. The photos translate pretty well a feeling of 'sadness' and since I've been visiting Aqueduct myself last winter, I can relate very well too it. It is a dreary place. The worst day I've had at the races ever, despite not having lost a penny that day. But I lost the joy for the sport on that track, on that particular day. It's dreary and sad out there. In that sense Zierock's shots are very impressive. Aqueduct made the headlines recently with even worse 'news' because of the death of 11 horses in the first 20 days of racing during the track's winter meetings!

Re: Daily Racing Chat Thread Grade 1 Queen's Plate, Keniloworth - Replay from last Saturdays race. It's South Africa's Premier Mile race and was won by upcoming star Futura. The hot favourite Legislate (2/5) finished second last and was found to have a viral lung infection afterwards. Triple Crown champ Louis The King was a strong finishing runner-up.

Re: Daily Racing Chat Thread Some fantastic news from continental Europe's oldest racetrack Bad Doberan! After it looked likely that the track would have to stop racing this year due to financial difficulties, news emerged today that the track is saved - largely through a new bookies deal with German Racing, which enables Bad Doberan races to be made available for betting worldwide - including live stream! Before that it was only possible to bet into the local tote. Bad Doberan, that is a small little track on the Baltic coast in east Germany. It's my local track, since I am from that area, born and living there until moving to Ireland, but family is still there - and have been at the track as a child and through my teens basically every summer gambling away my pocket money. It was only a 25min bike ride from home. The track holds one annual "Ostsee Meeting" - a four day bonanza which attracts huge crowds of up to 10.000 on any given day during the week. It's a small track, with only a temporary stand, build always for the meeting. But now, there may build a permanent one, which would absolutely fantastic! My dream is to have one day a really good horse that wins a couple of Group 1's in Ireland and Europe and to bring the horse then over to Bad Doberan to contest in the main race of the meeting...

That's fantastic news. Like yourself I think, I'm a massive fan of big international meetings like the Arc weekend and the Breeders Cup which attract runners from abroad. It's always great to hear good news about racing around Europe.

Re: Daily Racing Chat Thread The buzzer thing in US racing is still as relevant as ever. Jockey Roman Chapa has been suspended after photos emerged of him carrying a device during a race. He is not a first time offender - in fact he was once banned for the same reason some years ago! http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/89694/jockey-chapa-suspended-pending-investigation To be honest, one has to do only the maths here. If someone is as cocky enough to keep on doing this sort of thing even after being banned once already, the question is if there are others out there using these electro buzzers during race, but rather how many? On the other hand, my feeling is that US racing authorities don't really care. Animal Welfare? Ah, that's this 'Peta thing, isn't it? The recent clearing of trainer Assmusen and associates says it all, really. And there are so many rumours circulating for such a long time that other big names are involved in 'questionable' training methods as well, that it can't be all just the random 'BS animal welfare talk'. Makes me sick.

Re: Daily Racing Chat Thread Made my belated racecourse visit yesterday, taking in the fixture at Ayr. Not the best card and some small fields but an enjoyable day and it was definitely an eye-opener. Watching these animals at close quarters and understanding just how brave the jockeys are. It's rather infectious I'd say, already looking for another opportunity at a different course. Perth for the April meeting looks a definite goer!

Re: Daily Racing Chat Thread

That was incredible by Un de Sceaux beating two quality horses by a mile. He could probably win the Champion Chase off that performance. A truly special talent.
Certainly, it was a taking performance, but at the price, he has to be a lay. No doubt he will encounter a bigger field, proberley the fastest ground he's ever encountered and will be taken on for the lead. but he does look the likeliest winner. Ps, does anyone know anything about his sire Denham Red? I've never heard of him.

I'd happily lay any horse under 6/4 at Cheltenham, agreed he is far too short and I will be looking to take him on with an each-way bet myself. You can't make money backing favourites at Cheltenham. This is a specialist track too, it's one thing winning a 3 horse race at Leopardstown wher you can dictate from the front, it's another thing doing it at the festival.

Re: Daily Racing Chat Thread Also keep in mind that Mullins has a 4% win strike rate in the UK over fences. It's his hurdlers that are the ones to back in general. It is very easy to get carried away with Mullins horses. I remember last year, Briar Hill, Felix Yonger, Annie Power, Shaneshill, Hurricane Fly and Champagne Fever were all hotpots and they all got turned over.

Re: Daily Racing Chat Thread Boy, what a performance by Able Friend in the Group 1 Stewards Cup in Hong Kong today! Cruising home, hard held on the bridle from well off the pace (which we know is such a difficult task there). Just shy of the course record. WOW! A performance like that is the beauty of horse racing for me personally. Followed up on his G1 HK Mile success with that. Best miler in the word at the moment, no doubt. Let's hope he's leaving Asia now to take on the world. Mind you, as good is he is, he was still a beaten runner-up by more than 4 lengths by Variety Club last season in the https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zh3b9zVRVPo, which shows what a monster the South African star was.

Re: Daily Racing Chat Thread Great performance by Ertijaal to win the Cape Derby yesterday - beating the 1/3 favourite Act Of War by more than four lengths! The Mike De Kock trained Hard Spun son made all from the front, ensuring a good pace to make the most of his stamina. This was only a fourth career start of Ertijaal, who had an injury troubled juvenile season, but progressed nicely through the last couple of weeks, landing a Listed contest and proving now with this Derby success that he is a very exciting prospect indeed. A nice big, scopy colt, he could be one who leads the field home in the Durban July in a couple of months time....

Re: Daily Racing Chat Thread Excellent performance by formerly Irish trained Designs On Rome to win the Centenary Vase as Sha Tin today, coming from well off the pace and having to make a move around the whole field. A nice prep for Hong Kong's horse of the year for next month' big Group 1, the Hong Kong Gold Cup (now an international G1 for the first time btw.). He's Dubai bound afterwards and should be a leading contender for the Sheema Classic. Since moving to Hong Kong, Designs On Rome - a winner of a Tipperary maiden as well as runner-up behind Dawn Approach in the G1 National Stakes at the Curragh as a juvenile - has been a revelation. He's won two big Group 1's and several other Stakes races. He's beaten local stars Able Friend and Military Attack on multiple occasions as well.

Re: Daily Racing Chat Thread Have we seen the Kentucky Derby winner at Santa Anita yesterday? Dortmund started into his classic season the same way as he ended the last year: with a gutsy performance when landing the Robert B. Lewis Stakes, which should be a stepping stone for this extremely good looking colt towards the Derby. I was already mightily impressed with his attitude, presence and long stride when getting up late in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity Stakes in December. A son of Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown, he should have the right pedigree and the way he races suggests the Derby trip will suit. He's currently trading as the 10/1 ante-post favourite....

Re: Daily Racing Chat Thread taken from else where: Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway could be without a race meeting for two years if the proposed city bypass cuts through the Ballybrit facility. The manager of Galway Racecourse says a bypass route through the racecourse would have a ‘drastic effect,’ and could see the 150th summer racing festival cancelled in 2019. Four of the six proposed bypass routes would affect the racecourse. John Moloney says the drainage system that operates at the facility would be disrupted if the new route was to cut into the course. He says Ballybrit could end up with a lake instead of a racecourse. ARUP consultants who are leading the project say any works at the racecourse would be completed within 9 months – but John Moloney says this wouldn’t leave enough time for the Ballybrit team to prepare the course for the summer festival. He says the surface in Galway is of a very high calibre and attracts international horses – and it may never be restored to its current state if it’s disrupted. The Galway races summer festival is worth 60 million euro to Galway city and county, is Ireland’s largest racing festival and the 4th largest in the world. John Moloney says the whole Irish racing industry is appalled that any disruption to Galway Racecourse would even be considered.

Re: Daily Racing Chat Thread Heard it on the radio this morning, beaker. I'm sure it's not going to happen. Galway Festival is too big, too important for the region to let this happen. They were talking about losing two Festivals in a row that would be missed if this is going ahead. By all means, that is extremely unlikely in my mind. Well, I hope so at least.....

Re: Daily Racing Chat Thread Newcastle Racecourse issues ban on picnics - http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-tyne-31488901

Picnics are to be banned at Newcastle Racecourse for supposed health and safety reasons. At all fixtures, apart from the Blaydon Races, people will be prevented from spreading out rugs or eating in chairs. The management team said picnickers' furniture created a "potential trip hazard".

Newcastle Racecourse issues ban on picnics - http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-tyne-31488901 :unsure
I think that's good. Went to Cartmel 2 years ago on a beautiful day, every single part of the railing the whole way around the track was blocked up with vans, cars, jeeps and picnics the whole way along the track. It was so bad I could barely see a horse the entire day.. The horse racing fans can't get to a rail to see the race, yet the people stuffing their faces with sandwiches and drinking wine, who don't even watch the races, are in the way.

Re: Daily Racing Chat Thread Hmmm interesting. To be honest, personally I've never seen any problems of that kind ever. But I can understand the frustration caused by those experiences which you guys described there. On the other hand, if there really is a problem with that kind of thing, then there is a pretty simple solution: have a designated picnic area, where you permit it, and outside this area you don't. They do it at Newmarkt's Rowley Mile. Works perfect. I believe to ban picnics completely does send out a wrong signal to the public. Families want to have a good day out at the track with the kids, having picnic, enjoying horses and sun. Not every one can afford the entrance fee and the expensive drink & food at tracks. It baffles me that racing often reacts in a very insensitive, almost clumsy manner if it comes to those things. Some courses apparently even search your bags for food, and if they find sandwiches or chocolate bars, they do confiscate them. That doesn't make for a good experience.

He was back with a bang on his seasonal reappearance at Gulfstream Park yesterday! Pretty impressive the way he finished off this race. Next stop: Dubai and the Sheema Classic.
