India vs South Africa T20 I Series

3pts South Africa to win the series at 6/4 with Stan James

Sachin Tendulkar has had his say as to who will cause the home team most trouble, and it’s a bowler. The great man has singled out South African leggie Imran Tahir and reinforced the need for Dhoni’s men to play him well if they want to win.

Tahir is an enigmatic character who could be seen as something of an enigma. He can go for plenty of runs, which has led to him being dropped a few times. However he does have the best googly in the business and is a genuine wicket taker on his day.

The googly is a particular threat in ODI cricket where batsmen look to give themselves room and free their arms. Tahir’s ability to bring the ball back sharper than he turns it away will challenge all India’s superstars.

Aside from Tahir there is also the small matter of Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel. They will have the pace to trouble some Indian batters who struggle when the ball gets over chest height. It’s likely that either side will need 300 to have a chance, and South Africa have the depth to restrict the home side. Providing they play Ravi Ashwin well, they will be able to spring a surprise here and fall back on the experience they have gained from the IPL.

4pts SA to beat India in the first T20 at 11/10 with Coral

The South African side that faces them is jam-packed with ability, many of whom have plenty of experience in India with the IPL. They also visit India on the back of an impressive ODI series win against World Cup finalists New Zealand.

Their skipper AB de Villiers is one of the outstanding players in the international game and leads by example across all formats. In fact he is probably the best in the business at adapting to different lengths of game.

Alongside him in the middle-order is David Miller who can hit the ball many a mile, while the exceptionally talented Rilee Rossouw is bound to make his mark on the international game sooner or later.

3pts South Africa to win at 21/20 with Boylesports

After winning a tight first game where they chased down 199 in the final over, South Africa completely annihilated India in Cuttack, dismissing them for their second lowest T20I score. Indeed a shower of debris thrown from the stands in displeasure at the humbling display, halted proceedings twice and threatened to end the game prematurely. To coin a phrase, ‘the natives are restless’.

Indian cricketers are put under greater pressure than any other national team, a fact Alastair Cook could do with remembering the next time he bleats about the weight of expectation his team faces. With the next T20 World Cup taking place in India next year, this series was seen as a key indicator of how the hosts would fare on home pitches against their nearest rivals for that trophy. It has not gone well.

There have been individual performances which are heartening for those concerned. Ravi Ashwin looks as hard to play as ever, and Rohit Sharma’s ton in the first game was truly majestic. But as a team, cracks have developed into gaping chasms under the relentless pressure inflicted by this South Africa side.

The South African bowling unit looks solid, with a little sprinkle of x-factor from Imran Tahir thrown in. The leg spinner produced a trademark googly in the last match to dismiss a bemused Harbhajan Singh first ball before sprinting around the outfield in celebration. On the flip side, India’s batsmen seem to lack purpose.
