Weekly NAPS Competition: Sunday 17th May

Recommended Posts

3:15 Ripon - Love Island (6/1 Bet365) 1pt Win Put up a good performance on seasonal debut when chasing home Meshardal (who was a close second racing off a 6lbs higher mark today) at Doncaster, has been raised a couple of pounds for that effort but is still nicely weighted on the best of her historic form - such as when winning this race off a higher mark last season. The Whitaker horses often get underestimated in the market and I think that is the case again here as I had her in as a 7/2 shot. Was withdrawn due to the ground today and would not want any extremes of ground.

Re: Weekly NAPS Competition: Sunday 17th May Trainer Karl Burke sends out just the one runner to Ripon, the 2yr old gelding in making his debut so it wouldn't be a rent money bet, any drop in the market could give us a wee guide if he's fancied, he doesn't have any future entries ''for now'' it looks a poor looking race but the obvious danger looks to be the Richard Fahey runner. 2:45 Ripon - Parkes and Ride. 0.5 E/w Bet @ 5/1 with Bet365,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,''BOG''

Re: Weekly NAPS Competition: Sunday 17th May Ripon 2.45 - Racing venture - win at 12/1 bog bet365 2yo Seller Newcomers here from Burke, Easterby and Evans. Who knows if they're any good ?......generally horses that start off in sellers tend to be poor. There's a few that have run in one or two maidens, generally down the field and are now dropping in class. My selection ran last in a Pontefract maiden but has had a month to be trained some more and grow a bit. Pontefract is a tricky course for an inexperienced horse so maybe he's better than he showed there Quite expensive compared to the rest in this field and the trainers runner's usually come on for a run

Re: Weekly NAPS Competition: Sunday 17th May 3.25 Stratford - Carrigmorna King win @ 11/4 SkyBet Struggling to find anything today but I think this has a good chance. He was just beaten into third last time out by under a length and was beaten by a horse who was putting up a four timer. He is on the same mark today and should go well. I feel he will have to run slightly better today as this is a stronger race but he has held is own in a couple of grade one handicaps in the past placing 3rd and 4th so I have no worries about him in this company. He would probably want the ground to be slightly softer but he has won on good ground before so the conditions are fine. He is also a course winner. Baby Mix and One Term are the obvious dangers following good runs at Punchestown. I think this mark might be a bit too high for One Term and Baby Mix is up 6lbs for a 7 length 2nd. However Baby Mix was rated as high as 149 over hurdles and is only 7 so could improve on his last run.

Re: Weekly NAPS Competition: Sunday 17th May 3.50 - Ripon - Dubai Dynamo - 8/1 - SkyBet BOG Getting on a bit in years but proved he still has something to offer last time out at the end of April over C&D. Runs off same mark here. The winner that day was You're Fired Who was a very close second to Alfred Hutchinson at York last week so that form looks good. Selection won this race off 3lbs higher in 2012. Good luck all.

Re: Weekly NAPS Competition: Sunday 17th May 2.55 Stratford - 1pt win Impeccability @ 10/1 (Bet365) This is one of the worst races you could want to ever witness so you can't be confident on any runner. For that reason, it's worth chancing one who at least has some scope to improve in this sphere and has shown some form lately. Stays pretty well on the flat at a modest level, has shown some form in handicaps in the last few months and shaped reasonably on hurdling debut. Never had a chance with the winner - who is far better than any of these - and with that experience under the belt, with it being her first run in three months or so too, she might come on for that.

Re: Weekly NAPS Competition: Sunday 17th May 340 MR: Sky Khan 13/2 BetVic/Sky Backed this one last time out when a good runner up to Looking Well in a better race. Up 3lb for that which is a bit harsh but you get the feeling Lucinda Russell might have found the key to this one and could now improve on what he has shown with various other yards in the last couple of years. Not straight forward but this type of trip looks suitable and should get it on this course easily enough.

Re: Weekly NAPS Competition: Sunday 17th May 1.40 Kranji: Singapore International Cup (Group 1) Group 1 action in Singapore today - the International Cup shapes as a cracker with plenty of international contribution! It's easy to understand why as the winner takes home almost $2 million in prize money. Last years winner Dan Excel is here to defend his crown but has to overcome some serious opposition. Drawn wide, he'll need to use a bit of energy to get across and be up with the pace. That was a bit easier last year from a much better draw. He hasn't shown much since his International win, albeit mostly over shorter, and a recent third in the Champion Mile behind Able Friend indicates a return to form. Veteran Military Attack isn't getting any younger but is still mixing it with the best. Third in this race last year, he hasn't been in the same form lately and looks a rather dubious favourite at 2/1 here. Judged on his former best, he'll have every chance, but it's questionable if he's still up to the same level. Japanese contender Meiner Frost won his prep in last month and is clearly in form. It's hard to know what to expect from him and how his past form compares to international standard, though. My perception is the may be found out for speed over this 1m 2f trip as he has plenty of form over further and wasn't disgraced in last years Japanese Leger. Freddy Head knows what it takes to win the big races. He brings over Free Port Lux. A multiple Group winner in France, He had a decent prep when 3½ lengths behind Al Kazeem last month and should come on for the run. A big, strong, scopy individual, he looks like one who will do better as a four year old. His best forms came with cut in the ground so the likely quick conditions are a slight concern today. On the other hand his dam was a prolific fast ground performer, so it it may not be a problem after all. He has a good draw but is likely to be dropped in, so a bit of in-running luck may be required. It's hard to fancy anyone from the field. The local runners may not be good enough. Though French Free Port Lux makes plenty of appeal at 5/1. He could be the type to improve this year and his trainer wouldn't make the trip if he wouldn't believe in the chance of his mount. Free Port Lux @ 5/1 SJ

Re: Weekly NAPS Competition: Sunday 17th May 3.20 Navan - Booker 1pt win @ 16/1 Ladbrokes Think this horse could be interesting on his return to action if fully fit. He drops in trip here to the minimum, which looks an interesting move with the first to hood applied. He has shown plenty of ability on the few runs he has had and he has a low draw here and the services of Fran Berry. He might find everything happening a little too quickly for him in this but it wouldn't surprise me if he ran very well for a top yard.

Re: Weekly NAPS Competition: Sunday 17th May Ripon 3.15 Secrect Hint (9/4 skybet) If non runner Stratford 3.25 Carrigmorna King Secret Hint was beaten 1.5 lengths by Ridge Ranger last time out at Wetherby, but I’m going to forgive him that cause he didn’t get a clear run and that race was over 5f where as both his wins have come over the 6f he encounters today. Also the race previous to that he was successful in a class 2 at Newmarket.

Re: Weekly NAPS Competition: Sunday 17th May 2:15 Navan Toscanini is a strong favourite here and brings some top 2 year old form highlighted by a 1 and 1/2 length 2nd to Gleneagles although the Coolmore colt had a bit in hand and has obviously trained on a great deal. Mick Halford has yet to send out a winner this season though so Toscanini may just need this with bigger targets such as the Jersey at Royal Ascot making him a little short in the market at evens. The Qatar racing pair started their careers with 2 wins but haven't won since. They should find this easier but with dry weather forecasted overnight we'll probably have good ground which will probably be too quick for Beach Belle. Ainippe will come on for her reappearance given that Lyons likes to give his fillies time to find their feet and is a danger with 10lb claimer Oisin Orr on board. Aidan O'Brien must have been delighted with the way Father Frost won his maiden after a late surge won him the race from a terrible draw. He took his time to pick up but once the penny dropped he powered home over 7f looking to have a good bit left in the tank. He drops back a furlong here but Navan is a stiff course and it looked as if it was greeness rather than needing every yard and he's entered in some Group 1 sprints so connections obviously think he has some real pace. He was reportedly carrying a lot of condition so he's sure to come on a lot for the run as well as improve. Father Frost - 1pt Win @ 11/2 StanJames
