Brazil Serie A Flamengo - Vasco da Gama

Vasco have had a nightmare season back in the top flight, but, after looking dead and buried, 10 points from four games have give them a survival lifeline and they could yet launch the great escape, masterminded by head coach Jorginho who took charge at the club last month. It took a couple of matches for him to get his ideas across, but players are in sync with the coach now and he as a former Flamengo coach and player, will know what this huge Rio derby means to club and supporters.  Flamengo are the only team in Brazil to have collected more points on the road and their home record of 6-4-5 in on a par with the teams battling the drop, the two rivals are meeting for the sixth time this season in all competitions and Vasco have only lost once and will be straining every sinew today to ensure that #2 doesn't come this evening at the Maracana. Flamengo have conceded six goals in losing their last two starts and have shipped the most goals of any team outside the bottom six and by some way and with Vasco having scored twice in each of their last three starts, there will surely be a goal or two in this for the visitor and one is often enough to claim a result in this most keenly fought derby fixtures, with none of the last ten Serie A meetings being decided by more than a goal .

Brazil Serie A Corinthians - Goias

A win for Atletico Mineiro last night saw them close to within two points of Corinthians at the top of the table and the leaders will want to extend that back up to five by following suit this evening. The top two will have clear priorities ahead of their meeting in Belo Horizonte in 17 days time, AMG will be looking to reduce the deficit to three or less, Corinthians will want to make the trip with as big an advantage as possible, but definitely 4 points +, which would take the pressure off that potentially title deciding game.

The hosts have been very solid against bottom ten teams, posting a 7-0-0 record at home with a 16-1 goal difference, winning five by 2+ goals, on the road they are 5-3-0 versus the same teams and remember how difficult it is to win away in Brazil, that means that they have collected 2.6 pts per game when playing any bottom ten side and are keeping a clean sheet in 67% of those meetings. Gois are in trouble, two points from safety, they are not yet a lost cause, as the four teams directly above them are all within three points,  they are going to have to up their game , but I doubt it will be in fixtures like this, or Sunday's trip to Santos which will ultimately decide their fate, but how they fare against the other strugglers and in all home starts from now on in. Corinthians have scored five goals in two of the last three h2h meetings in SP and whilst that might not be possible this evening, I do expect another two goal win . Since early June when Corinthians hit their stride, they are 8-1-0 next time out when coming off a draw or defeat , they get a couple of defenders back tonight who were not available for the 2-2 draw at Ponte Preta last time out and it is difficult to see Goias stopping another bounce back performance. Also returning from international duty and named as starters are Gil and Renato Augusto, they should have been three up at PP before some very sloppy and un-Corinthians like defending let the home side take the lead and we can expect a far more professional and disciplined showing this evening and with so many more options, a comfortable win.

Brazil Serie A : Santos - Goias

Goias lost 3-0 at leaders Corinthians and Santos were edged out 1-0 at Gremio, continuing their away day woes.

Not an awful lot to add really. Trips to Corinthians and Santos are tough for anyone, let alone back to back inside three days and should be too much for one of the poorer sides in the league, especially when they will be facing a home side desperate to claim back their hard earned top 4 ranking. Santos' road form leaves a lot to be desired, but they are 12-2-1 on home soil and have, incredibly, scored at least three goals in their last seven home starts and have averaged 2.47 per game in all league home games. The hosts are without a couple of suspended players, including 8 goal teenage striker Gabriel, but they still have massive offensive threat, not least through Serie A's top scorer Ricardo Oliveira (see below) and their absences mean that we get a decent quote today and with huge motivation, I cannot see Goias stalling the Copa Libertadores push from Santos, who have named a squad with only three points in mind..

Santos:Vanderlei , Vladimir, Daniel Guedes, Zeca , Chiquinho, Werley, Leonardo , Paulo Ricardo, Renato, Thiago Maia, Lucas Lima, Marquinhos Gabriel, Leandrinho, Serginho, Ledesma, Vitor Bueno , Léo Cittadini, Ricardo Oliveira, Geuvânio, Neto Berola, Leandro, Nilson, Marquinhos.

Brazil Serie A:  Santos - Palmeiras

Santos progressed to the final of the Copa do Brasil (beating Sao Paulo 3-1 in the semi final home leg, winning both legs by that scoreline actually), that now means that they have now scored an incredible three goals or more in NINE straight home games ! I guess that sequence will end soon, but I am not so sure it will be today, with Palmeiras having conceded eght in their last three road games and having played out a very tense Copa semi final of their own in midweek, seeing off Fluminense on penalties. Flu dominated that game after the break, pulled a goal back to level things on aggregate and had another disallowed and felt very hard done by, after creating three times as many attempts on goal as Palmeiras. So these two will meet in the cup final over two legs around the turn of this month, but that feels a long way off and this is far from a dress rehearsal with 4th place and a Copa Libertadores spot to play for. Palm need a win and nothing else to get back into contention for that, three points would see Santos back in pole position. I do not know what happens if Santos finish fourth, if Pameiras would get the "other" Copa place regardless, or would it go to 5th in the league, I tried to find out quickly this morning but ran out of time. If that was the case, then conspiracy theorists would argue that losing today would give them a better (double chance) of making the international competition. I will find out before writing again about these two, for now we can consider it a potential "bonus".

Readless of which, Santos seem irresistable on home soil right now and had a training run out in midweek, whilst Palmeiras had a battle ! Santos to record a seventh straight home win over the visitors.

Santos -0.75 ball 2.20 asian line/Sportmarket.

Bagzi....do you have something for tonight ?

According to whoscored.com-

  • Flamengo players are a bit light on the ground this week.
  • That's because five – Marcelo Cirino, Pará, Everton, Alan Patrick & Paulinho – have been suspended by the club.
  • Midfielder Jonas serves a ban after a red card.
  • The Rio club has suspended five senior players after some extra-curricular nocturnal activities came to light

Gremio are available @ 1.66 with bet365

Brazil Serie A Goias - Coritiba

Goias are only ahead of Coritiba on goal difference and the truth is that it is going to be very tough for either team to survive without winning this game and especially Goias who have two really difficult looking road games up next, but neither seems capable of keeping a clean sheet and they will have to step up offensively to earn the three points. Both teams have seen 5 of their last six starts produce at least three goals and neither has a kept a clean sheet in seven, the reverse fixture ended 1-1 and both to score is the minimum I can see from this, but they each need more. I am not overly concerned with team news at this time of the season, but Coritiba have named quite an adventurous looking squad and the got a major boost with the news that top scorer Henrique Almeida is now available to play, four of his last six goals have come on the road and I slightly favour his team to edge this , let's say 1-2, but I feel there is better value on goals.

Eight of the last nine h2h meetings here in Goiania have gone "over", the other ended 1-1 and Coritiba have scored in eight of those, twice in four. Goais have scored in in 10 of 11 h2h games home and away, notching two or more in seven.

Goias: Paulo Henrique , Renan, Everton, Gimenez , Rafael Forster,Alex Alves, Felipe Macedo , Fred, David, Juliano, Patrick , Ygor, Arthur, Felipe Menezes , William Kozlowski, Bruno Henrique, Carlos Eduardo, Erik, Ruan , Zé Love.

Coritiba: Vaná , Wilson,Carlinhos, Juan, Juninho, Leandro Silva, Luccas Claro, Rodrigo Ramos , Walisson Maia,Alan Santos, Cáceres, Esquerdinha, João Paulo, Lucio Flávio, Ruy, Thiago Galhardo , Thiago Lopes,Guilherme Parede, Henrique Almeida, Michel, Negueba , Rafhael Lucas.

Brazil Serie A: Internacional - Atletico Paranaense

Ahead of Inter's last home start I wrote ......

"I was/am interested in Internacional at home to Sport Recife in Brazil, the hosts are very strong at home, have not conceded in five Serie A starts and will definitely be looking for all three points after starting their home campaign with a scoreless draw against Chapecoense. They have won their next two home starts 3-0 after a 0-0 draw and given that they are already back on track with a subsequent 2-1 road win at Sao Paulo and face a tough trip to Santos at the weekend, it should be all about the win against a Sport team who have not won , or impressed in four league and cup starts, BUT odds seem on the money (-1 ball 1.98) and coming into this round of games, 10 of the 13 Serie A wins have been by just a single goal. Inter have not scored a goal inside 26 minutes in five home starts (four wins) and average time for their breakthrough goal is the 58th minute in that sequence, Sport held out for well over an hour here last season in a 2-1 loss and it is definitely an option to hold off and wait for a better quote if you are following this game "in running"."

They won that 1-0 via a goal just before the hour mark and followed up with a impressive win by the same scoreline at strong home side Santos at the weekend. They scored very late there, but it was fully deserved and probably one of the best road performances you will see in Brazil this season, they were very competitive, won virtually every 50/50, allowed Santos few chances and could have been three up before they took the lead. Inter are 8-2-0 at home to Atletico and three points this evening will take them top and put pressure on current joint-leader Gremio who face a tough trip to Palmeiras tomorrow.

AP's form tailed off after a strong start last season and they have won just 9 of their last 32 league starts and that is bottom 5-6 form , so their current position of 16th, even at this early stage, doesn't look particularly false. They host Santa Cruz this weekend and that match is far more win-able and they do not want to waste too much energy chasing a lost cause this evening , we can expect them to play with that game in mind and maybe even with some rotation, but they do have pretty much a fully fit squad to choose from. They lost 4-0 to Palmeiras on opening day, the only "top" team they have faced so far, they got very physical after falling behind and were fortunate to only get one man sent off, they were already three down at that stage and will need a lot to go their way this evening to get anything out of this.

Brazil Serie A: Atletico Mineiro - Ponte Preta

Easy to see goals here, last three h2h meetings have gone "over". Atletico have conceded 14 in their last six starts, including four at Sport Recife which we have discussed in the previews below and have not kept a clean sheet in eight, six of Ponte Preta's last seven starts have produced three or more goals. The hosts have the option of bringing back Cazares and Erazo into the squad after the pair returned from Copa America this week, but they will be a game time decision. AMG played at Internacional on Thursday night , using 12 of the 14 who played last weekend in a match where they were down to ten for 30 minutes and at one stage playing versus 9 and then 8 , so all would have been working extra hard and now are playing in the morning game, just some 61 hours later. Ponte Preta were at home on Wednesday and have not travelled for 14 days, so a freshness edge to them. This is the first of four matches in Belo Horizonte for AMG, three at home and the derby with America and a chance for last years runner up to begin their climb up the table, but it is hard to see how it will be achieved with a clean sheet today and another high scoring game is on the cards.

Brazil Serie A: Chapecoense - Cruzeiro

Chapecoense were very disorganized last round and lost 5-1 away at Sport Recife . They acted quickly afterwards to appoint a new coach, but he has had no real time to work with his players, they will be starting their third game with a different coach inside 8 days and they have clocked up a lot of air miles in the last 10 days and they need a free midweek ( which they will get next week) just to regroup.

Cruzeiro have just posted back to back and impressive wins, beating Ponte Preta 4-0 on the road and coming from behind to defeat leaders Palmeiras at the weekend, both were wide open contests and whilst there was a LOT to like about Cruz offensively in both and I loved the way they kept going forward, instead of sitting on their lead(s), they were suspect at the back and could easily have conceded four instead of one across the two games. They will be without central defender Bruno Rodrigo and left winger Alisson ( lost 6/23 when he plays. 12/26 when he is sidelined) tonight.

Despite their "issues", Chapecoense are very focused on the points tonight, they travel to Santos at the weekend and know that failure to win this evening is likely to leave them very close to the drop zone come Sunday night. They have reduced ticket prices and are expecting a big crowd and have a new coach to impress. Both team have been involved in several shoot outs recently and we might well see another.
